The Song of the Grain Shemini Aseret

The Song of the Grain Shemini Aseret Welcome to our daily Perek Shira series. We're up to the Shaar Shibolim . It's not specifically the wheat or barley, but other general growth. They sing the song of Tehilim 65,14. שְׁאַר שִׁבּוֹלִים אוֹמְרִים. לָבְשׁוּ כָרִים הַצֹּאן וַעֲמָקִים יַעַטְפוּ בָר יִתְרוֹעֲעוּ אַף יָשִׁירוּ (תהלים סה יד) The meadows don sheep and the valleys cloak themselves with grain. They shout for joy, they even sing. In this chapter of Tehilim, David Hamelech talks all about the beauty of rain. The word Karim refers to beautifully luscious meadows , and he says it's as if the area is cloaked in sheep , meaning there are so many sheep because there is so much pasture, thanks to the rain. A previous pasuk says פָּ֤קַֽדְתָּ הָאָ֨רֶץ/ Hashem take heed of the earth and water her . So there's so much rain that there's an abundance of grazing area. If you were to look down at it, it would appear that the meadow is wearing a wool, sheepskin coat, because there are so many sheep there. So that's what it means לָבְשׁוּ כָרִים הַצֹּאן wearing a coat of sheep The Mabit, in his commentary on Perek Shira, says that the sheep are grazing from a certain type of food that is not necessarily fit for human beings, in the area we'll call the meadows. The human beings are eating from the valleys, which is where there is human- edible food. That's why two terms are used: יִתְרוֹעֲעוּ אַף יָשִׁירוּ/They shout for joy and they even sing. The shouting for joy is for the animal food and the singing is for the human food. So both the humans and animals are thrilled with the rain. The Midrash says that one of the benefits of rain is that it's for both humans and animals, so everyone is singing. As we said, the humans sing, because of course when there's rain and a famine ends, prosperity returns, and the people shout and sing for joy. But there's also a certain symbolism here. The Ibn Ezra says that when the the growth comes out, it looks like the the creation itself is singing and giving out its beautiful song. The Radak takes it even more literally and says, when the wind blows through the fully grown stalks of grain, there's a soft, pleasant hum, which sounds like a song of joy. This is also a mashal for Klal Yisrael, that when they return from Galut, they will also be rejuvenated and invigorated and sing out in sheer ecstasy. So this pasuk is the song that comes at the end of a negative spell, whether it's a physical famine, and the humans, the animals sing, or it's the Jewish people in exile. The Midrash Raba on Bereshit 13,4 brings down different qualities of rain. **And again, there are no coincidences. We are about to enter Shemini Aseret when it says our final request for rain, and human beings are judged for rain. During this holiday, we have seen a lot of the hand of God directing our Perek Shira class, without any planning on our end.** These qualities are called Givurot Geshamim/ the Powers of Rain. And we say Mashiv Haruach U'Morid HaGeshem in Atah Gibur, so rain is included in the Beracha of God's strength. It says that the power of rain is equal to creation. God says in Iyov, God does wonders, referring to creation, and the next word is rain. So rain is equated with creation. Additionally, Rabbi Chiya bar Abba says in Midrash Raba 13,6 that rain is as great as Techiyat HaMetim- just like the dead come back to life, trees and vegetation come back to life. That's why we put Mashiv Haruach with Mehayeh Metim;because it's like resurrecting the dead- there are no leaves, everything's dead, and then boom, the rain comes and everything comes back to life again. Furthermore, just like there's song by Techiyat Metim, where Yeshaya 42 says Those who were buried in the rocks will sing, and there is song when it rains, quoting our pasuk. Further in that same Midrash it says a certain goy asked Rav Yehoshua ben Korcha, "You have holidays and we have holidays. When you're happy, we're not happy and when we're happy you are not happy."And he listed some holidays that they had, that we have and they don't coincide. So when do we both have happiness? The answer was, when it rains. When it rains, They are going to sing a song. Who is singing the song? Not just the Jewish people, but everyone's singing the song. In the next chapter of Tehilim, 66,1 It says, הָרִ֥יעוּ לֵ֝אלֹהִ֗ים כׇּל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃ /The whole land is singing, referring to the rain. It's something that we don't really appreciate. We're not farmers, we don't sing. But the Gemara in Masechet Taanit 6B says that when rain comes down, there's a beracha to make. We are supposed to say Modim Anachnu Lach, Thank You Hashem for every drop that came from the heavens… and it continues to the entire Nishmat, that people say when they're saved from kind of some problem for some other segulot. But here we have a Gemara that says you're supposed to sing the Nishmat, so to say, when it rains, as a celebration. Here in America there's a nursery rhyme: Rain, Rain, go away, come again another day. If you look on Wikipedia, it dates back to the 1600s and quotes John Aubrey, an old philosopher who wrote in one of his books, "Little children have a custom, when it rains, to sing or charm away the rain. They all join in chorus and sing, 'Rain, rain, go away, come again another day.'" That's old, Western culture. But when I lived in Israel, my daughter went to nursery there and they had a song הרבה טיפות היו בתוך ענן טיפה אחת ירדה נפלה לתוך הגן גשם גשם והשמחה רבה להשם תודה ותהילה There were many drops in the cloud. One drop fell into the garden. Rain. Rain, the happiness is great. To God, there's thanks and praise.' That's the way they train children there. Rain is great. When it doesn't rain, there's not enough water in the Kineret, there's a drought and we don't have enough food Rain is a great thing. Rabbi Miller used to speak about this. He said you can train either your children from when they're young to say, "It's a nasty day," when it's raining outside, or you can tell them what a wonderful thing rain is. He would go on and on about rain. That's this Perek Shira/the Song of Creation-appreciating rain. And if you hear this before Shemini Aseret, you'll have an appreciation for it.

There has been growing tension within Israeli society over where to prioritize a hostage deal – at what cost (in terms of how many and which Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prisons should be part of the deal and the length of any temporary ceasefire). At the same time, the sense of urgency behind Israel's hostage cause in capitals around the world is…drifting. Not disappearing, but drifting. A turning point seemed to be when the UN Security Council passed a resolution – 14-0 (made possible by a US decision not to veto) – that, for the first time, did not call for a ceasefire that was conditioned on the return of the hostages. It's a sense we get from families of hostages, who are in regular contact with media, NGOs and governments around the world. It's against that backdrop, that we sat down in person with Maya Roman, who was in New York and Washington, DC. Maya Roman is an Israeli journalist from Tel Aviv. Two of Maya's cousins – Yarden Roman-Gat and Carmel Gat were visiting Carmel's mother, Kinneret, in Kibbutz Beeri on October 7th for the Simchat Torah holiday. Carmel and Yarden were taken hostage, Kineret was murdered. Yarden was released as part of the hostage deal last November. Carmel is still being held. Since 10/07, Maya has not stopped organizing or advocating for the release of her family. When we hear of the hostage families movement, Maya is the kind of person who has been in the middle of it. In our conversation, Maya talks about what they have learned from Yarden since her return from captivity, and where the hostage movement may go from here, at this crucial and very raw phase.

The True Doctor

Today we have more thoughts from Rav Yehezkiel Abramsky on the concept of being healed by a doctor. There is a Halacha in Shulchan Aruch that says that when a person takes medicine, he's supposed to say, “ May it be your will that this medicine should be a refuah for me.” We must realize that while we are taking an aspirin, ultimately it is Hash e m that will get rid of the headache. Rav Abramsky added the following mashal : Sometimes we go to a doctor and sometimes we go to a PA, a physicians assistant. The PA hasn't gone through medical school and therefore, is not as qualified as the doctor, but it's good enough for a lot of issues. And it's becoming very popular today to go to a PA rather than to a doctor. Sometimes people will go to a Hatzala member, with the understanding that they have some knowledge on the matter. But if the Hatzala member or the PA get stuck because it's a little too complicated, they'll say that we should really ask the doctor. Rav Abramsky says that in every medical matter, all the doctors are only PAs. The real doctor is Hashem. That has to be our attitude as we walk into the doctor 's office. He is only the PA. He is not the doctor. We have to think, “ God heals me, and I will be healed.“ The reason we say th is Yehi Ratzon is because we are talking to the real D octor. After we speak to the PA , we want to get the opinion of the real D octor. And when the real D octor says it will be OK, it will be OK. That's why in the Amida we say, “ You are our praise. ” We don't say that in any other B eracha, b ecause medicine is an area where it is very easy to be confused and think, “ W ow. The doctor did it. What a great surgeon! What a great diagnostician. He gave me the shot and boom, I got better. Unbelievable. Look how fast it worked. Look how smart he is! ” We give a direct connection to the doctor , and that is why in the Beracha of Refaenu , we say, “ You are our prayers.“ Don't make the mistake of thinking that it is anyone else but Hashem that is healing us. Rav Abramsky was once walking in the street with a student when he met his doctor. He started to ask a doctor about some medication that he was taking. Then, as they said th eir goodbyes, the student asked R av Abramsky , “ Was that your doctor? “ And R av Abramsky answered, “ No . That is not my doctor. He is just the messenger. My doctor is Hash e m.“ Rav Wolbe discusses this concept in his sefer Alei Shur, where he calls it, “ A living relationship with God. ” It's not enough to just liv e our lives and ask God when we need something. Rav Abramsky spoke in a way that showed that he constantly had Hashem on his lips. A student from America once came to hi m when his wife was in labor. R av Ab romsk y said, “ D on't worry, she is in good hands.” The student assumed that his R av knew who the doctor was. But what he meant was that the key to childbirth was in the hands of Hashem. Another example of how he lived with Hashem occurred when he went to Kineret at a time when the Arabs were just above the Golan Heights, and it was Syrian domain. A student told him, “ Do you see the air above the mountain? That is under Syrian control and at any moment they can just bomb us, has v'halila. Rav Abramsky replied, “ Absolutely, but He doesn't let them. ” Whenever he said the word He without any additional title , it referred to Hashem. That was his lexicon. Because he lived with Hashem. When someone asked whether he would be going to Bnei Brak his answer was, “ If He lets me.“ When he was going to get a sefer off the shelf, or when he was looking for a page, he would say , “If He helps me find it, I will find it.“ That is living with Hashem, and realizing that in anything I do, there is a bigger He that is there. And the real doctor is Hash e m. Have a wonderful day .

Is the city Reket mentioned in Joshua 19:35 referring to Tiberias or is Chamat? Perhaps Rakat is Tzipori? What about Kineret? Rabbi Yochanan and Rava disagree about the identification of these cities. Zeira said that Kitron is Tzipori. However, since Kitron is in Zevulun’s land and Zevulun complained that they were not given good land, how could this be? Or is it just that the grass is always greener on the other side? Ekron is the city of Caesaria. It was a Roman stronghold. It is not possible for the Romans and the Jews to both be well established at the same time or both be destroyed at the same time – two different verses are brought to prove this. Drashot are brought on verses explaining conversations between Yitzchak and Yaakov with God about Esau, which is the father of Edom, from who the Romans are descended. If one says one is successful without hard work or works hard but is not successful, do not believe them. However, if one says one worked hard and was successful, that is to be believed. Is this only regarding Torah and only some type of Torah learning? Why? Can one provoke evildoers? Or should one stay away? On what does it depend? If there are two months of Adar, when do we read the Megillah – in the first month or the second? If one holds the second month and one reads it in the first and only after that, it was decided to add another month, does one need to read it again? What about other mitzvot like the four parshiot?

Gonen Segev trial begins today The trial of the Former Israeli Minister accused of spying for Iran begins today. Gonen Segev who served as Israel's Minister of Energy and Infrastructure for two years under Yitzhak Rabin and then Shimon Peres has already been convicted for a myriad of crimes including drug smuggling, forgery, and credit card fraud, but this latest charge of carrying out espionage for Iran certainly tops them all. Netanyahu slams E.U. on Iran Prime Minister Netanyahu has just delivered some sharp words for European leaders hoping to keep the JCPOA Iran ‘nuclear deal' alive. According to Netanyahu, leaders need to look no further than the events of the past few days which saw an Iranian diplomat arrested in Europe for allegedly planning a bombing attack in Paris. This attack reportedly targeted an Iranian exile group but Iran denies any such plan. Bedouin village to be demolished A flash of violence has just erupted in a small village in the West Bank. Knan Al-Ahmar is home to about 180 Bedouin residents but last May Israel's high court announced that the village had not been approved for construction and ordered it to be completely demolished. Well police, protesters and residents have just clashed violently at the site where eleven people have already been arrested. Changing the discourse Gregg Roman, Director of The Middle East Forum speaking at ILTV Studio about the Israeli Palestinian conflict that continues to rage on, seemingly without end and that the war is only over when the losing side admits defeat. Germany reportedly mediating prisoner swap We've just learned that Germany is reportedly acting as a mediator between Israel and Hamas to negotiate a long sought-after prisoner swap. For many years now, Israel has been pushing for Hamas to release the bodies of two fallen I-D-F soldiers killed in the 2014 Gaza war. Well now, we may finally be seeing the first real indicator that a deal can indeed be made. A slap on the wrist? It's difficult to forget the gruesome incident in 2015 in which an African Asylum Seeker was mistaken for a terrorist in a Be'er Sheva bus station following a terror attack. The man was shot by a security guard and then lynched by a small mob, despite only being an innocent bystander. Well an Israeli court has just delivered a sentence on one of the men involved in that lynching with some saying that it doesn't even qualify as a slap on the wrist. Jewish cemetery in India is literal dump   A historic Jewish heritage site in India has decayed into a literal garbage dump. Making that news all the more upsetting is the fact that this unique site is actually a 143 year-old Jewish cemetery. Unfortunately the entire area is currently overrun with waste and trash, much has been forgotten about this unique site over the years and clearly, it's been terribly neglected as well. Israeli students find Microsoft oversight Two Israeli's might've just saved Microsoft a massive and potentially dangerous headache through a school project. The duo are students at Israel's Technion Institute of Technology and they managed to find an oversight in Microsoft's ‘Cortana' voice assistant feature which allows potential hackers the power to seize complete control of other people's computers – and with relative ease. Hassle-free regulations Melissa Koch, Founder & CEO of Infront Compliance speaking at ILTV Studio about the Israeli company that helps businesses navigate the ever changing rules. Galilee to become new Israeli food hub When you think of the Galilee, the first thing that comes into your mind probably isn't food. Maybe it's the history of the area or the beautiful Kineret, but food? Not so much. Well, that's changing thanks to a new Israeli initiative calling for food-tech companies to literally take a hike and move up North to become a new food hub. Europe loves to hate ‘the chutzpah' Israelis traveling abroad don't always make the best impressions but Israeli pro wrestler Leeor Brooks takes being the stereotypical rude and “ugly Israeli” to a new level with his in-ring alterego, ‘the chutzpah.' and trust me, no one has as much chutzpah as “the chutzpah.” Hebrew word Of The Day: D'MUT | דמות = CHARACTER/LIKENESS Learn a New Hebrew word every day.
