Clif Bar & Company has been a vocal advocate for women and women athletes since its founding days in the mid-1990s. At the headquarters office, the company provides many benefits to support women and parents including a robust parental leave policy, extensive health and wellness programs including an onsite gym, subsidized onsite daycare, a lactation room with hospital grade pumps, and the choice to work a reduced work schedule upon returning from maternity leave. When LUNA Bar was created in 1999 as the first nutrition bar for women, the brand naturally focused on supporting causes that women care about, like equal pay and women in film. In 2019, LUNA Bar closed the World Cup roster bonus gender pay gap for the 23 women on the US Women's National Soccer Team, paying each of them $31,250 to ensure their equal pay for equal work. Clif Bar is adding to this legacy of supporting women by highlighting these six athletes and their contributions to their sports. In this episode, hear Brooke Donberg - a long time Clif Bar team member and advocate for women's sports - tell the story behind how & why women athletes ended up on your Clif Bars back in 2020.

Liam and Will discuss their recent trip to @thewave England's artificial Wave park.  They have to eat their own words about surfing like no one is watching, as the usual photo service misses the very day that boys visit. Leaving them to only experience how it felt, rather than how it all looked.  There is talk of expectation, ego, having spectators and other surfers watching every wave you miss, make or wipe out.  They discuss how the controlled environment helped Liam deal with the steeper take offs on the Expert setting and look at how much progress can be made by surfers at these 'surf-gyms' that provide the same canvas to practice on over and over again.  The boys discuss the importance of choosing the right board, especially for fresh water and also how looking like a surfer does not a surfer make!  Liam is stoked with his new (second hand) Luke Short twinny and how a connection with a board can improve your surfing and your experience of it.  Try things, make mistakes, stay curious and move on.  Will is blown away by a recent Lakey Peterson @lakeypeterson clip where despite all her success she is still as stoked as ever living the attitude of gratitude.

We dive into the inclusiveness of the surfing community, being an intentional female role model, and overcoming fear.  Highlights from the Podcast: The book Lakey brings with to every competition  How to keep the balance of enjoying surfing and competing  What Lakey does to focus and stay in the moment Using keywords written on her hand to stay in the right mindset The story of how Lakey got into surfing Winning the junior nationals at 14 and qualifying for the WSL at 16 Learning to get better from losing Training the mental and physical for peak performance  Being an intentional role model for young girls Defining and overcoming fear  The use of meditation to increase performance  Building trust between coach and athlete  Taking responsibility of wins and losses Financial compensation equality in the WSL You can find more about Lakey at: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LakeyPeterson/ Instagram: https://instagram.com/lakeypeterson Twitter: www.twitter.com/LakeyPeterson World Surf League Profile: https://www.worldsurfleague.com/athletes/2156/lakey-peterson Lakey Peterson grew up in California’s right-point-rich playground of Santa Barbara. She learned to surf at the age of five during a year-long trip around the world with her family, but when she got back to California the unapologetic tomboy was too busy terrorizing soccer fields and tennis courts to bother much with the beach. Showing the same competitive drive that made her mother a national champion swimmer, Lakey was dominating the boys her age on the playground, as her fellow CT counterpart Conner Coffin (an old schoolmate) can attest. But by age 12 she grew tired of driving for hours to tennis tournaments, and being she’d already racked up a national surfing title, going full throttle down the surfing path seemed much more alluring. At 14, she was the first woman to pull an aerial maneuver in competition. At 16, surfing as a wildcard in her first-ever Championship Tour event, she finished runner up at the US Open of Surfing. She qualified that same year and came back to win the US Open in 2012 on her way to claiming rookie of the year. A future World Title run seemed all but certain in the eyes of pundits and fans, but she’s been winless in her five seasons since 2012, finishing consistently just below a revolving list of World Title contenders. That all changed in 2018 when Lakey claimed victories on the Gold Coast and at Keramas to battle Stephanie Gilmore for the World Title. Lakey’s prospects for her first Title were high, but she was eventually defeated by Alana Blanchard in Round 2 of the Beachwaver Pro Maui, ending the season in the No. 2 position. Sadly the pattern followed in 2019 when a defeat to Stephanie Gilmore in Maui yet again ended her World Title dreams. In a double-blow, her early exit also meant that she missed out on selection for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Lakey’s fast-driving style and whip turns make her especially vicious in down the line pointbreaks like the ones she spent her formative years in. That explains her solid results at Snapper Rocks, Keramas and Jeffrey’s Bay, the recent additions to the women’s Championship Tour. Lakey’s positivity, consistency, and talent mean she is a perennial threat. More importantly, she remains more determined than ever to claim her first World Title.   Help Support the Podcast! Pourquoi ? Quelles sont les solutions ? Eric’s Wild Idea: To create a program that helps people optimize performance and alleviate pain.  As an athlete and human, it’s important to be able to move to the best of your ability. Injuries and pain that have kept me from running, surfing, or other adventuring have always been challenging.  Today’s guest, Dr. Eric Goodman, has been recommended to me by many guests of this show. As the founder of the movement-based Foundation Training program, Dr. Goodman has helped thousands of athletes and every-day people alleviate pain and increase performance. Some of the people he’s worked with include athletes like surfers Lakey Peterson and Brad Gerlach, the late climber Dean Potter, as well as actors Rob Lowe, Chris Hemsworth, Jeff Bridges, and Matthew McConaughey. Both my partner Johnny and I have been using Foundation Training for the last six months to help us alleviate a nagging back injury and IT band pain, and both of us have experienced positive results.  I wanted to have Dr. Goodman on the show because he has a great story. His wild idea to become a health practitioner and create a program to help people move and feel better is something I think a lot of people can relate to.  A former water polo player, Dr. Goodman developed back pain that doctors told him he would need surgery to fix while he was in chiropractic school. Instead of going under the knife, he developed a series of exercises that helped him heal and became the origins of Foundation Training. Early in his career, he was also hired to train the U.S. Olympic Men’s Water Polo team, and used his methods to help them the year they took the silver medal. Today, Dr. Goodman has published two books, and there are Foundation Training trainers in over thirty countries around the world.  Since many of you are getting ready to make New Year’s Resolutions, I wanted to get Dr. Goodman’s  advice on how to avoid injuries and train the right amount. We also dive into why healing emotional pain is as important as healing physical pain, how he got the wild idea to create a new movement practice, and what other methods he uses and thinks you might want to check out.  Listen to this episode if:  You struggle with injuries or chronic pain. You want to strengthen your body. You are interested in helping others heal. You are curious about movement-based training programs. This week’s conversation is with Peter Park, founder of the Platinum brand and co-owner of the Platinum Fitness Summerland facility in Santa Barbara, California. He brings to this conversation a history rich of stories from the frontier. A blend of his own limit pushing achievements and 23 years of experience training elite athletes, big-screen celebrities, top touring musicians, and recreation folks that are serious about their fitness, mobility, and longevity.Peter has trained the best of the best -- Lance Armstrong, Kelly Slater (11x World Champion surfer), Lakey Peterson (currently #1 in the world right now for professional surfing), 2017 Major League Baseball MVP Giancarlo Stanton, and motocross game changers Chad Reed and Ken Roczen are among the athletes that Peter has nurtured through various stages of their careers.Peter recently authored a book called “Rebound” on Foundation Training, which lengthens and strengthens the back body, equaling out one’s total body strength, posture, flexibility, and overall body awareness. In this conversation we discuss what he’s learned from training the best in the world, why Peter struggles with the idea of balance, and what cancer has taught him about embracing every moment.I hope you can appreciate Peter’s humility and as a friend of Peter's, I hope you get a sense of the man he his, far more than the craft he's mastering…. see if you can dig into what he's searching for, how he goes about it, and why it matters so much to him. This episode is brought to you by WHOOP and Athletic Greens.WHOOP: Starting today you can join WHOOP for $30 a month, six month minimum to begin.
