It's an interesting study to look at all the names of people in the New Testament. Some of them appear over and over, and are well known. But there are others who only show up once, and no details about their lives are given. Today, Pastor Dan talks about one of his favorites: a man named Tertius*. He was the scribe who wrote the entire book of Romans as Paul dictated. Your job may be to write a sermon. Or, it may be simply to type it up for the pastor. No matter, God acknowledges all labor for Him.

Caleb Drahosh In Paul's final greeting to the Romans, we learn that the letter was recorded by Tertius. Gaius hosted Paul, likely in Corinth. We learn of Erastus, the city treasurer, and Quartus as well. These men were of varying statuses, but all served Christ where they were stationed. Pen and ink, civic service, and hospitality are some of the simple, yet profound, tools used in the upbuilding of the church and the advancement of Christ's Kingdom on earth.

This Sunday, Pastor Bob led us through Romans 16 with the message, "He Knows My Name," showing how even an often-overlooked chapter reveals God's heart for His people. During the War of 1812, the superior British Navy blockaded Long Island Sound, causing huge financial losses for Connecticut merchants. Sailors and civilian boaters alike were trying to win government rewards for blowing up British ships in The Sound with underwater bombs. The British responded by devastating the village of Essex on the Connecticut River, destroying its 27 ships. Four months later, they attacked the tiny village of Stonington and outnumbered the town 1,300 to 30 in manpower – but the Battle of Stonington had a very different outcome. The story is told by Tertius de Kay, author of the acclaimed narrative on the battle.

Reconstructive surgeon Tertius Venter tells Life & Faith how his life changed forever when he saw how much he could impact the lives of desperate people.Dr Venter is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon who spends 8 months of every year volunteering his time to two charities helping the poorest people on the planet get surgery they'd have no hope of getting were it not for people like him.Over 20 years ago Tertius went on a mission to The Gambia in West Africa where a hospital ship was providing medical care to extremely poor people. His surgical skills were needed and completely altered the prospects of those coming for help.He returned home a different person, so animated by both the incredible need that he saw, but also the difference he was able to make in people's lives.Since then his life has been dedicated to providing relief to suffering and poor people whose lives are very often completely changed by what Tertius and his team are able to offer them. Tuesday, 6 August 2024 So they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet: Matthew 2:5 “And they said to him, ‘In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus has it been written through the prophet'” (CG). In the previous verse, Herod inquired of the chief priests and scribes concerning where the Messiah would be born. With that, Matthew now continues, “And they said to him, ‘In Bethlehem of Judea.'” The name Bethlehem comes from the Hebrew words beith, house, and lekhem, bread. Thus, it means House of Bread. However, it has a secondary meaning which is derived from the Hebrew lakham, to fight or do battle. Thus, it can mean House of War. The connection between the two is that the word lakham figuratively means to consume. Just as man consumes bread, war consumes soldiers engaged in battle. Judea is derived from Judah, Praise. This is where the term Jew is derived. This same sentiment concerning the birthplace of the Messiah was held by the common people as well. This is evidenced many years later in John 7 – “Therefore many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, ‘Truly this is the Prophet.' 41 Others said, ‘This is the Christ.' But some said, ‘Will the Christ come out of Galilee? 42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?'” John 7:40-42 As such, it was commonly understood by the people, whether they knew the source of this information or not, but it seems likely they would have. As for that source, the men before Herod next say, “for thus has it been written.” The verb is in the perfect tense. As such, the words that were written describe a completed action producing results that were still in effect. It had been written and what the word said remained true. In other words, it reveals the unchanging nature of the word that was given “through the prophet.” Many translations read “by the prophet.” The word is dia. It signifies through (think of diameter: through a circle). The word “by” can have that connotation, such as “His words were written by a scribe, Jeremiah,” but it can also mean that a person did the writing on his own, “This was thought of, written by, and paid for by Jeremiah.” In the case of Scripture, it is the word of the Lord written through Jeremiah. Saying “by” could lead one to a wrong impression unless he understood the doctrine of inspiration – “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16, 17 & “...knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” 2 Peter 1:20, 21 Life application: One could ask if inspiration means that the word of God is solely derived from Him without any input from the prophet. In some cases, this may be the case when the Lord speaks out exactly what He wants written down. However, at other times, the personality of an individual shines forth along with the clear understanding that it is the word of God that is being conveyed. Luke's style in the Gospel of Luke and Acts is quite noticeable. And yet, the structure and patterns clearly reveal a divine inspiration that Luke probably didn't even know existed. In fact, many patterns in his writings, some of which fit in harmony with other books of the Bible, have only been found in recent years. New patterns continue to be found as well. Paul used a scribe, Tertius, to pen the book of Romans (Romans 16:22). Anyone who knew Tertius' handwriting would say, “This was written by Tertius.” And yet, the letter was dictated by Paul. Anyone who was (or is) familiar with Paul's thoughts as expressed in his epistles would say, “Paul said these things.” And so, there is harmony between the two, even though the traits of both are evident. And yet, anyone who is familiar with the Bible will know that it perfectly expresses the thoughts of God. They are consistent with what is seen from Him throughout Scripture. And more, innumerable patterns between the typology presented in the Old Testament and the fulfillment of those types is expressed in Romans, demonstrating that God was completely involved in the process of inspiring Romans. Likewise, studies have been conducted on the words used by Paul in all of his epistles. For example, rich and certain numerical patterns are to be found within the number of uses of various words, far too many to be by random chance. Take time to consider the doctrine of inspiration and how it then forms an integral part of what God is presenting through the people He has selected to give us His word. With this divine/human touch, the word of God becomes an intimate love letter to those who will receive it. Also, as you read it, pray for wisdom in what it is telling you. Ask Him to make you a part of the divine inspiration of Scripture by disclosing to you its hidden secrets. If you find a pattern that no one has ever seen there before, it is because God has chosen that particular moment in time to uncover it. And more, He has chosen you to be a part of the unfolding of that pattern in this marvelous tapestry that reveals His goodness to the people of the world. Glorious Lord God, what a treasure Your word is. It has been read, contemplated, studied, explored, and analyzed for thousands of years. And yet, You are still revealing its hidden mysteries to Your people. How can we not stand in awe of You? And how can we not tremble at Your word as we contemplate what it is telling us? Praises to You, O God, for Your wonderful word. Amen.

When Antiochus Epiphanes forcibly Hellenized Judah, it resulted in the Maccabean Revolution under Mattathias and his sons. After they won their independence, the Hasmonean Dynasty ruled up until 63bc when Pompey annexed Judea into the Roman Empire. Herod the Great and his descendants ruled over the region for many years, though in Judea the Romans directly ruled through governors. During Jesus' ministry Herod Antipas ruled in Galilee and Pontius Pilate governed Judea and Samaria. Sadducees partnered with the Roman government and controlled the temple. The Pharisees focused on obedience to Torah, according to the traditions of the elders. The Sanhedrin was a council in Jerusalem made of Sadducees and Pharisees that controlled a police force and ruled on legal issues. Scribes copied scripture and had expert knowledge of the Law of Moses. Jesus lived in a time of fragile peace when Roman provocations threatened to light the match of Jewish revolution at any moment.
Romans 16:23 Gaius, host to me and to the whole church, greets you. Erastus, the city treasurer greets you, and Quartus, the brother. I've just spent the last three weeks on a ministry trip to South Africa. I had amazing hosts who freely offered their homes, cars, time, energy, money, and food to me. Besides giving me a place to sleep, they opened their homes for meetings and meals of the believers in their house churches. So perhaps you have also experienced such God-glorifying love and hospitality as Paul and Tertius experienced from Gaius. Paul's commendation of Gaius for his hospitality reminds us first of what Paul wrote in Romans 12:10-13. “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality.” Perhaps when Paul wrote that, he was looking at Gaius, his host. Secondly, Hebrews 13:2 describes in a figure of speech what Gaius was doing. “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.” The word angel literally refers to God's messenger. Like my friends and brothers and sisters in Christ, Gaius, hosted Paul and Tertius, angels of the Lord. As we live to love with Jesus, may we be encouraged to open our homes and our resources to our brothers and sisters in Christ. It's how Jesus loves His body. When we practice hospitality, we are loving Jesus' body. From the Scriptures I just read, we learn this is both commanded and commended.
Romans 16:22 I, Tertius, who write this letter, greet you in the Lord. The Romans learn from this verse who has been Paul's amanuensis, his secretary, so to speak, who put Paul's words into print. Tertius felt that this was the place to add his own personal greeting with the rest of Paul's fellow workers, so he did. In essence, Tertius wanted to express the love of Christ to them which is why he said he greeted them “in the Lord.” All of us who are “in the Lord” have a very real union with every single believer in Christ. We have a shared love experience with Jesus. As I meet people in one city or nation after another, from various ethnic groups and nationalities, I find that “in the Lord” we already know each other. It's like meeting extended family who I didn't know before. But we have a common ancestor, so we have an affection for each other due to that relationship. That's how it is with everyone who is a member of Jesus' body. We have affection and love for each other because we have a love bond through Jesus Christ. I, Norm, who writes and records this podcast greets you today “in the Lord.” This greeting comes out of the love of Jesus that abides in me for you. If He loves you, I love you, therefore I greet you with His love. Let us all be amazed at Jesus, in and with whom we share unfathomable riches.

When Antiochus Epiphanes forcibly Hellenized Judah, it resulted in the Maccabean Revolution under Mattathias and his sons. After they won their independence, the Hasmonean Dynasty ruled up until 63bc when Pompey annexed Judea into the Roman Empire. Herod the Great and his descendants ruled over the region for many years, though in Judea the Romans directly ruled through governors. During Jesus’ ministry Herod Antipas ruled in Galilee and Pontius Pilate governed Judea and Samaria. Sadducees partnered with the Roman government and controlled the temple. The Pharisees focused on obedience to Torah, according to the traditions of the elders. The Sanhedrin was a council in Jerusalem made of Sadducees and Pharisees that controlled a police force and ruled on legal issues. Scribes copied scripture and had expert knowledge of the Law of Moses. Jesus lived in a time of fragile peace when Roman provocations threatened to light the match of Jewish revolution at any moment. In the first reading (not included within this audio) of St. Paul we hear the name the name Tertius. St. Paul used secretaries to write his letters as he dictated them. At times, St. Peter and St. John also used secretaries. The Homily briefly dives into this further. Why a secretary? St. Paul did not have a great penmanship. The Lord was please to give a gift of something that is small that has a great value. Something as simple as Tertius' penmanship was greater to the world than a dozen miracles. His skill enables St. Paul to leave behind legacy of great teachings. . . . that is Valued Greatly by God God values small things in everyday life. We often relate greatness to big events and actions. God values everyday small things just as much. Note what that says for every day and ordinary faithfulness! It is the willingness to offer ourselves in our everyday lives that has a great value. It is not the pausing and waiting to do something big. Because, as we know, that moment often doesn't come. Tuesday, 5 September 2023 And Sopater of Berea accompanied him to Asia—also Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians, and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia. Acts 20:4 The verse more exactingly reads: “And there accompanied him as far as Asia Sopater, a Berean; and Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius a Derbite and Timothy; and Asians, Tychicus and Trophimus” (CG). In the previous verse, a plot against Paul by the Jews caused him to cancel his sailing trip to Syria. Instead, he returned through Macedonia. Along with Paul, seven other people are mentioned as going to Asia with him. These would have been the people selected to go with him to Jerusalem to present the gift to the church. They would then have all been in Corinth with him, intending to travel by ship when he went. Instead, they have all taken the longer trip with him. The naming of these individuals begins with, “And there accompanied him as far as Asia Sopater, a Berean.” Rather than “of Berea,” as some translations state, the designation is an adjective, “a Berean.” Some think that Sopater is the same as Sosipater, who is mentioned along with Timothy and others in Romans 16:21. The name occurs on an arch in the area of Thessalonica. If he is the same person, he may have been one of the politarchs of Thessalonica. He is identified here, however, as a Berean. Next, it says, “and Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus.” Aristarchus worked with Paul at Ephesus and had been in the riot there (Acts 19:29). Secundus isn't mentioned elsewhere, but if it is aligned with Tertius of Romans 16:22 and Quartus in Romans 16:23, then he may have been their brother. Secundus means Second, Tertius means Third, and Quartus means Fourth. They may have been either the sons of one man who chose to name his sons this way, or they could have been born slaves and named according to their birth in that way. The only name missing is Primus, which would be the First, and it was not an unknown name at the time. The verse continues with, “and Gaius a Derbite and Timothy.” Gaius may be the same Gaius in Acts 19:29 (but there he is referred to as a traveling partner from Macedonia) and 1 Corinthians 1:14. The term used to describe him is also an adjective, not a noun. Hence, he is a Derbite. Timothy is Paul's faithful friend and companion first mentioned in Acts 16:1 and who is mentioned many times in Acts and Paul's epistles. The verse ends with, “and Asians, Tychicus and Trophimus.” Tychicus means Fortunate or Fortuitous. It is the Greek equivalent of Felix. It was a common name of the time. He is mentioned five times in the New Testament – Here in Acts, Ephesians 6:21, Colossians 4:7, 2 Timothy 4:12, and Titus 3:12. He is well spoken of. Trophimus comes from trophé, meaning food or nourishment. Thus, according to Strong's, the name means something like Nutritive. However, others think it signifies something like Nursling or Foster Child. He is found again in Acts 21 and then in 2 Timothy 4:20 in a classic verse concerning health in relation to New Testament teachings on the misused doctrine of faith healing. That there were seven with Paul may be a subtle connection to the seven deacons found in Acts 6. Life application: As noted, Trophimus is mentioned later in 2 Timothy 4:20. There, it says – “Erastus stayed in Corinth, but Trophimus I have left in Miletus sick.” Paul was an apostle who had been granted special powers. At times, his influence alone was able to heal without him even being present. Each time that he was able to heal, it was for a set purpose. At other times, he was unable to heal. Such instances are recorded for us to understand, in advance, that the claims of “faith healers” are false. There is no such thing recorded in Scripture, and there is no guidance for its practice. Rather, the Bible asks us to pray for the healing of others and to allow God to respond according to His wisdom. Hence, we can say that faith healing is possible, but faith healers are false. Such people who make claims like this should not be listened to. Rather, read the Bible, and accept that people get sick, and some will die. We are to accept God's providential care for us, praying for His hand of healing or for His hand of comfort in our afflictions or loss. In all things, let us not lose heart but be people of faith as we continue on life's path. Heavenly Father, we know that You can and will heal if it is according to Your will. You can do all things, but sometimes it is not in Your plan to do so. Help us to remain faithful when times of trial and testing come about. May we understand that Your plan is far greater than our temporary health or happiness. We bow to You and will follow, even through the valleys that may test us. Amen.
