The Lost Lagoonby Emily Pauline Johnson (1861-1913)It is dusk on the Lost Lagoon,And we two dreaming the dusk away,Beneath the drift of a twilight grey—Beneath the drowse of an ending dayAnd the curve of a golden moon.It is dark on the Lost Lagoon,And gone are the depths of haunting blue,The grouping gulls, and the old canoe,The singing firs, and the dusk and—you,And gone is the golden moon.O lure of the Lost Lagoon—I dream to-night that my paddle blursThe purple shade where the seaweed stirs—I hear the call of the singing firsIn the hush of the golden moon. It is time for a vacation! I mean who does not love getting away from it all, going to a land of sun and surf, beautiful women, hunky men, and a catatonic mother! Ahhhh, who am I kidding, Maggie does not appear in this book. The kids have no time to worry about their mom. They have lifeguards to ogle and women to annoy. And let's not forget about diving deep....and we mean DEEP...into Fantastic Four lore! What? You do not know about the Creature from the Lost Lagoon, Mowfus from the Planet Quon? How can you call yourself a Marvel fan if you do not know who this character is? Can I fill this paragraph with any more question marks? We are talking high-jinx on the high seas, with a high amount of high-larity. This story is .....something. It deals with things that occur to characters in a manner that unfolds in a story. This all occurred. Boats....this story had many boats. Much of the action was on or near water so they needed boats to be on the water while the action occurred. Some of those boats broke. Others were damaged. But there definitely were boats. And....other stuff.....ok....look. Let us level with you all. This was not very good. This is a story that was put out in an anthology book of stories from dead books. There are some definite rewrites that happened, and it just falls apart. If you want our advise, just head out and find a nice bar and have a drink. Who knows, maybe you will see a human looking horse.   To view the art from this issue, check out our website:https://jeffandrickpresent.wordpress.com/2021/05/23/marvel-super-heroes-6-natives-in-a-strange-land/ Don’t forget to support us on Patreon, https://www.patreon.com/JeffandRickPresent.  We have started to release monthly episodes for our Energizer and greater tiers. John Tabb wrote:   "A flash of harmless lightning, A mist of rainbow dyes, The burnished sunbeams brightening From flower to flower he flies."   He’s talking of course about the hummingbird.     Gardeners are enthralled by hummingbirds and will do next to anything to attract them to their garden.     One of my happiest memories is being in my garden, working away, when I suddenly felt a little displacement of air on my cheek and I turned and found myself staring right at a hummingbird. Pure magic.   Hummingbirds find food entirely by sight. If they see red, they zoom in for a closer look. This is why all the hummingbird feeder‘s have that "McDonald’s cherry red" as a prominent feature of the feeder.   On the other hand, the liquid it does not need to be red. Remember that.   You can make your own simple nectar by combining one part sugar to four parts water in a sauce pan and then make a simple syrup by boiling it for two minutes. Allow the mixture to cool before before you fill your feeders and replace it every couple of days.   And whatever you do, don't add anything else to your syrup. Do not add red dye and do not add honey; both are harmful two hummingbirds.     And yes, you may not see them. Hummingbirds are notoriously sneaky. They can feed every 15 minutes without you even knowing, unless you’re sitting right there or you happen to have your nest cam trained on your feeder.     Finally, hummingbirds love some plants more than others. They are especially fond of honeysuckle. Their favorite flowers have to meet to their color criteria – red, red orange or pink blossoms.   John Audubon called them "glittering fragments of the rainbow".         Brevities #OTD   Today is the day that the botanist Carl Peter Thunberg died in 1828.   Thunberg has been called by many names – the father of South African botany      Thunberg had actually been taught by Carl Linnaeus and Linnaeus encouraged him to continue his work in Paris and Amsterdam. In Amsterdam, Thunberg met the Burmans, a father and a son, and both botanical experts.   From there, Thunberg joined the Dutch East India Company and he botanized in South Africa for three years. After South Africa, he traveled to Japan where he stayed for a little over a year.     Before he went to Japan, Thunberg needed to learn Dutch. The Japanese were not about to convert to Christianity and so they had closed the country off to all European nations except for Holland in order to learn more about medicinal plants.   When Thunberg went to Japan he was posing as a Dutchman instead of a Swede.     In fact, during the 18th century, Thunberg was Japan's only European visitor and his Flora japonica published in 1784 was a revelation to botanists around the world.    During his time in Japan, Thunberg discovered the Easter Lily growing near the city of Nagasaki. He also discovered Forsythia in Japan and he named it to honor William Forsyth.       #OTD  Today is the birthday of the Canadian botanist Julia Wilmotte Henshaw who was born on this day in 1869. Remembered as one of British Columbia‘s leading botanists, Henshaw studied for a bit with the botanist Charles Schaefer and his wife Mary Schaefer Warren. The two were surprised when Henshaw published Mountain Flowers of America in 1906. Rumor had it that the Schaefers may have felt Henshaw had co-opted their work, but another perspective would be that Henshaw was simply more driven and she was definitely an experienced author. In either case, the work needed to be published and by that time Henshaw had already written a few books so she was not slow to publish.  In any case, she went on to publish two additional volumes on Canadian wildflowers.     Henshaw was a founding member of the Canadian Alpine Club.   Henshaw had a regular column called The Note Book that was featured in the Vancouver Sun newspaper where she was known as gentle Julia by her fellow journalists.   Her weekly column is a delight to read even today.     In April of 1937, she wrote:   "If one were to tabulate all the proposals put forward as to what is to be done with that monstrosity called a fountain, in the centre of Lost Lagoon, I think it would occupy a whole column in the newspaper! Some want it to continue to work as a fountain, illuminated or not; others propose to turn it into a rockery."     The last one she wrote talked about was a continuation of the previous weeks discussion of the destruction of forest areas. Henshaw always wrote with conviction and in that last column she aimed to rouse awareness:   "I refer to the practice which has increased with each passing year of shipping enormous quantities of young Douglas firs by the carload to the United States for use as Christmas Trees. Surely this is a matter which should be promptly and peremptorily stopped."      And here’s a lovely excerpt from her post for this day August 8, 1935   "When one stops for an instant in the whirligig of daily life to think of "All things bright and beautiful," three words spring into prominence, namely music, children and gardens, each bringing a separate form of loveliness before our eyes, yet all three correlated in color, fragrance, and form."       #OTD   It’s the anniversary of the death of the landscape painter John Henry Twachtman who died on this day in 1902.   Twachtman was an impressionist painter known as one of "The Ten" a group of American Impressionists. It was said, they were gardening with a paintbrush.     By the middle of the 1880s, American impressionists were returning home from France where they had learned to paint out-of-doors. At home in America, the gardening movement was well underway. So, when they were looking for things to paint, outside gardens became one of the foremost subjects.     Following in the footsteps of Monet, the painters would gather their things and go out in search of flowers. This is a period of time, clearly drew the two great arts of painting and horticulture together.   During this period, the painters or their spouses or their families often started gardens of their own. In the case of Twachtman, he lived in Greenwich, Connecticut and he turned his suburban yard into a place of beauty.  In fact, Twachtman is known for featuring flowers from his own garden as well as painting his family casually living their life and enjoying the outdoors.   Twachtman's painting called, In the Greenhouse, was exhibited by the National Gallery in 1902.     And here’s a funny story  about John Twachtman that was shared in the El Paso Herald in 1902:   A man who had once bought one of his landscape paintings, wanted Twachtman to weigh in on the hanging of the picture.  Twachtman expressed his approval of the background, the height at which the canvas was hung, and the light.   He said, "Indeed, there is only one change to make." "What is that?" inquired his host solicitously. Twachtman replied "You should hang it the other side up. I always have."       Unearthed Words "A break in the heat away from the front no thunder, no lightning, just rain, warm rain falling near dusk falling on eager ground steaming blacktop hungry plants thirsty turning toward the clouds cooling, soothing rain splashing in sudden puddles catching in open screens that certain smell of summer rain." -  Raymond A. Foss, Summer Rain       Today's book recommendation: Herbs: Delicious Recipes and Growing Tips to Transform Your Food by Judith Hann    Today’s book is one of my favorites - Judith Hahn offers delicious recipes and growing tips to transform your food.    And, I love the way Judith starts out talking about herbs in the forward of her book she writes,   "Herbs have taken over my life. They have been catalysts in the kitchen, liberating my cooking by encouraging me to be more creative. And they have also helped me to become a more serious plantswoman, using the different shades of green, the texture and shape of the leaves, their intoxicating aroma and their glorious flowers to transform the look of my garden."   And did I mention that this book is absolutely beautiful? Because it is- and the photography inspires creativity like crazy. My favorite part of the book is all the anecdotes along with Hahn’s advice on how to make the most of the herbs in your garden.         Today's Garden Chore    Today is the day to put the word peonies on your calendar. And you should put peonies on your calendar every day between now and the end of September to remind you that now is the time to transplant or divide your peonies if they need it.   Peonies are best propagated through division. And when you plant a peony it’s important not to bury their eyes. Experienced gardeners will tell you to plant your Peony high; with the crown no more than an inch or so beneath the soil surface. And remember: peonies no longer have to look like your grandma‘s did back in the 1920s. Now, peonies have an entirely new range of looks.        Something Sweet  Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart   Here’s a charming story I ran across about Thunberg's time in Japan.     During his visit, Thunberg was confined to a small artificial island in Nagasaki harbor. Ever the clever end-rounder, Thunberg came up with a strategy to obtain botanical samples.   Thunberg bought a goat. Then, he asked his Japanese assistants to collect plants to feed the goats.   Thunberg knew that goats are picky eaters and it was through the plant material collected for the goats that Thunberg ended up receiving five different species of hydrangea previously unknown to the West. These hydrangeas would have been the lace caps – the ones that produce the beautiful UFO ring of blooms around the flowerhead of small florets and Japan was very private about them. Can you imagine his excitement?   The entire time Thunberg was away, which amounted to an incredible nine-year journey from his native Sweden, Thunberg sent plants and letters to Linnaeus who in turn said that he had never had, "more delight and comfort from any other botanist".   #FavoriteStudent #TeachersPet       Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

This is a series with some history, beginning back in 2006 with the five-issues run, "Three Days Dead," and then the three-issue miniseries from 2008, "Prodigal Sons." Soon after that, Cullen and Brian began The Sixth Gun, but now that that long-running series is behind them, they decided to revisit and revitalize their first creative project together. Over the course of their conversation, Cullen and Brian talk about their efforts to reprint the original comics in color -- and with the help of the new series' colorist, Bill Crabtree -- the impetus behind the new on-going series, their work together on The Sixth Gun, and their process of collaboration on The Damned. Andy and Derek also ask them about some of their other projects, including Cullen's Harrow County (with Tyler Crook) and Brian's Poppy! and the Lost Lagoon (with Matt Kindt).

Studios, his two current ongoing series from Dark Horse Comics, Dept. H and Ether, and his voluminous work for Valiant Comics. The guys have been wanting to get Matt on the show for years, so this interview is a long time in coming. And the conversation is quite substantive. Among other topics, they discuss the geneses of these recent series; Matt's strategies for juggling multiple storylines at once; his collaborations with Tyler Jenkins (on Grass Kings), David Rubín (Ether), and Brian Hurtt (Poppy! and the Lost Lagoon); the many titles he has written for Valiant Comics; his love of genre storytelling; the unique way he "signs" certain books at cons; and his creative direction after the groundbreaking Mind MGMT. This has to be one of the most prolific creators the guys have ever had on The Comics Alternative, and they come nowhere near covering all of the topics they wanted to discuss with Matt. But this is all the more reason to have him back on the show in the not-too-distant future.

Young Readers: Reviews of Musnet, Bird Boy Vol. 1, and Poppy! and the Lost Lagoon

This month, Gwen and Andy take listeners on a worldwide tour featuring adventures of various cultures in three books: Musnet: The Mouse of Monet by Kickliy (Uncivilized Books/Odod), Anne Szabla's Bird Boy Volume 1: The Sword of Mali Mahi (Dark Horse Books), and Poppy! and the Lost Lagoon by Matt Kindt and Brian Hurtt (Dark Horse Books). Before they get to the books, Andy and Gwen both regret not being able to attend HeroesCon, but Gwen gives a brief (and very interesting) report from her recent experience at the Children's Literature Association Conference in Columbus, Ohio. Who knows? Maybe the Two People with PhDs Talking about Comics for Young Readers will both be there next year? Gwen and Andy are always excited to see more comics translated into English, and Kickliy's Musnet: The Mouse of Monet is now available in French and English editions. Both enjoyed the leisurely storytelling and the wonderful use of color in this story of a mouse named Mus who longs to paint like a master artist. This first volume of a projected four-volume series introduces us to Mus's world in Giverny, France, his teacher, his new friend Mya, and the world of painting. This book will appeal especially to young readers (ages 8 and up) who show an interest not just in painting, but in any of the arts. The look and pace of the book may take some getting used to for young readers, especially if this is their first venture into European comics, but the venture is certainly worth taking. Next, Gwen and Andy discuss Bird Boy Volume 1: The Sword of Mali Mahi, which began (and continues) as a webcomic by Anne Szabla. This book (suggested for ages 8-12) contains familiar elements of quest/adventure stories, yet it has the feel of something both fresh and ancient. Szabla combines elements of myth and legend from a great many sources -- Mayan, Norse, Northwest Native American, etc. -- to tell the story of Bali, a 10-year-old boy desperate to prove his worth to his tribe despite being small in stature. Although considered too little to participate in an important coming-of-age ceremony, Bali takes matters into his own hands and discovers a dangerous secret that's been kept hidden for ages. Gwen and Andy love the story and can't say enough about the fabulous art and use of color, yet they wish that the creator and publisher had given readers some information about the cultural influences reflected in the book. (Perhaps they will in the second volume, which comes out later this summer.) Still, Bird Boy is an exciting, unique new series that the two look forward to exploring further. Finally, Gwen and Andy could not stop singing the praises of Poppy! and the Lost Lagoon by Matt Kindt and Brian Hurtt. Although suggested for ages 8-12, this is a book that can be enjoyed and appreciated by much older readers...even those with PhDs! Ten-year-old Poppy Pepperton and her legal guardian Colt Winchester are explorers working for a 4,000-year-old Egyptian pharaoh with the body of an eight-year-old boy. The pharaoh sends Poppy and Colt on an adventure that would make Indiana Jones think twice, a story filled with danger, mystery, riddles, puzzles, a flying carpet, a mummy head that talks, a creature called a gigantipus, and more! Poppy! is truly a book of wonder, reflected not only in characters we quickly come to love and care about, but also in its fantastic art and glorious use of watercolor. And although Poppy! is an enormously entertaining book filled with humor, it also speaks to issues of the environment and the preservation of natural habitats without getting preachy or didactic. It's pretty safe to say this is one of Gwen and Andy's favorite books so far in 2016.

Penicillin Hello, and welcome to episode 147 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. It's the end of another era for the Fantastic Four, as Fantastic Four #125 marks the final work by Stan Lee as regular writer of the book. Concluding the return of the Monster from the Lost Lagoon, this final issue features unlikely concussions, melodramatic melodrama, quick-change costuming, and deep, meaningful morals. Well, three out of four ain't bad... We also stop and take a moment to assess Stan's return to the Fantastic Four, how it compares to his return to Amazing Spider-Man, and whether the Gibbon is better than the Monster. It's a bittersweet moment for the show, twinged with sadness but filled with the knowledge that an extended run from Roy Thomas is just around the corner... In The Kingdom Of The Mute, The Phlegmatic Man Is King Hello, and welcome to episode 111 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. It's the final episode of 2014, and taking advantage of the wintery season, Steve and Andy are taking a look at Fantastic Four #97, featuring a summer holiday, a trip to a marine mammal park, and a magical, size-changing submarine. Sensible plotting has been put on hold, as the motivations (and, indeed, the vocal properties) of the antagonist seem to change from page to page. As an extra seasonal treat, we're also taking a look at Silver Surfer #15, featuring a pitched battle between the Surfer and the Human Torch.
