Last week, we received a comment from a listener saying we were too negative and that maybe we should stop coming to Belgium. This comment sparked an interesting conversation between Maghalie and David about keeping it real, and showing all sides of a quest for performance. Maghalie and David open up about the many things they actually do love about racing in Belgium, and they talk about why it has been important to them to talk about the more "negative" and difficult parts of the journey. I'm chatting to Maghalie Rochette - she's a Canadian cyclo cross rider and mountain biker, she came to the sport from a background in running and triathlon, and she also has her own successful podcast called Fever Talk. But what sets Maghalie apart is that she is known for talking openly about racing as a female and all the struggles that come along with that. On her pod she launched a super successful series where she goes into depth about the challenges for women racing during their menstrual cycle, and in doing so she has created a whole platform where people feel comfortable talking about this topic that was previously something of a taboo. It's so refreshing to hear how open she is about it, and fascinating to hear how she has used the science to figure out that not only is it something that does not have to hold you back, but it's something that can actually make you stronger. We are so aware of the difference between men and women in the professional sense – the prize money, the racing, the equality and the wage gap, but it's interesting to hear about the physiological differences. And it's refreshing to hear Maghalie's take, that racing as a female doesn't necessarily mean it is harder – it just means it's important to understand your body so that you can turn it into an advantage.  It brings up some interesting questions that are relevant to both male and female athletes on how we can use science to understand our bodies better, and in the process learn how to get the most out of ourselves during training and racing, to learn to listen to your body, and how to find the balance between performance and wellbeing. Rebecca McConnell is an Australian mountain biker. She has always been strong on the World Cup circuit, banking multiple podium spots, but somehow, was always overlooked. Bec doesn't care about the attention, so it never bothered her. But this year, she stormed into the Mountain Bike World season winning the first 3 World Cups! Bec has always been one of my favorite rider to watch because of her honesty and relatability. In her career she has gone through hard moments and she's not afraid to say it when things are hard...yet, she always finds a way to overcome her challenges. This is a casual conversation between two athletes, where Maghalie and Bec exchange about managing stress & pressure, and growing older and more mature into a sport. On April 21st, Lael Wilcox became the fastest person on earth to complete the Arizona Trail. It took her 9days, 8hours and 23minutes to ride the 827mile trail from Mexico to Utah. Meanwhile, her wife, photojournalist Rugile Kaladyte documented the ride, to be able to share this incredible story. Maghalie Rochette is a three-time Canadian Cyclocross Champion, three-time Pan American Cyclocross Champion and Cyclocross World Cup winner. After racing for the Clif Pro team for six years, she decided to strike out on her own as a privateer in 2018. In this interview, she and Payson talk about what prompted her decision to leave her position on such a legendary team, how she learned the hard way to negotiate sponsorship contracts and advocate for herself, and where she hopes to expand her career outside of racing. They also talk about the exhaustion that comes with running your own program and why she makes sure to set aside time to do nothing. She talks about the difficulties of racing in Europe that go beyond jet lag and the language barrier, how she wants to bring cyclocross into the mainstream in Canada, and why she's grateful to be racing as a woman at this point in cycling.
