Recently, the country's top cyclocross riders took on a slick, muddy course in Lévis, Que., site of the 2024 national cyclocross championships. Just past the finish line, Canadian Cycling Magazine was there to capture the reactions of six new champions.Regular contributor Jake Williams was at the event, not only racing in the relay and the championships themselves, but taking in the action. In this episode, he shares his interviews and stories from Lévis with editors Matthew Pioro and Matt Hansen.Emilien Belzile grabbed his first championship win in the junior men's category. He faced a tough race and even went down on the course. In the end, he had to sprint hard against Evan Moore for the finish line. In early November, Belzile was third in the junior race at the Pan Am championships. This past June, the Fédération québécoise des sports cyclistes named him mountain bike athlete of the month for his podium placings in Canada and Quebec Cup events.Nineteen-year-old Mika Comaniuk is no stranger to CX nationals or racing in Lévis. In 2023, he won the C2-level Cyclocross de Lévis. Back in 2022, he was second in the junior race at CX nationals in Victoria. This past weekend, he got a gap on his fellow racers in the under-23 men's group that he was able to maintain until the end.Marin Lowe took a break from her studies at the University of Victoria to jet across the country, borrow a bike and win the under-23 women's race. Lowe already has a maple-leaf jersey in her collection: she is the 2023 junior cross country champ. Also that year, at the cross country world championships, she crossed the line in second place, behind her then-teammate Isabella Holmgren. In this episode, Lowe reveals the unique indicator she has that tells her when she's really ready to race.Like Comaniuk, Rafaelle Carrier won in Lévis in 2023. Actually, Carrier has won in a whole bunch of places the past two years, including Gullegem in Belgium and in Missoula, Mont., at the 2023 Pan Am championships. This year, Carrier was second in the junior category at the cross country world championships. In a way, it's no surprise she defended her 2023 national junior CX title. Still, her competition was top-notch. In second was USCX overall winner Nico Knoll. Third was Aislin Hallahan, a regular on recent USCX podiums. While Isabella Holmgren's elite win wasn't much of a surprise either, she also faced some serious competition, too, like multiple CX champ Maghalie Rochette and current Pan Am champ Sidney McGill. Ian Ackert continued his relatively compact but successful 'cross season by snagging his first elite title. You'll learn how he celebrated that win and how those festivities didn't really seem to hinder him on his next race day at the C2 event.Throughout this episode, Jake, Matthew and Matt bring their analysis to the event, mixed with their signature humour.
Tyler Cloutier and Bill recap the Kings CX weekend with analysis and interviews with the top three finishers in the elite women's and men's events. 21:18 Maghalie Rochette 26:46 Katie Clouse 32:21 Lauren Zoerner 40:36 Lizzy Gunsalus 50:02 Curtis White 53:48 Eric Brunner 57:19 Tyler Clark 1:04:37 Ian Ackert 1:09:22 Curtis White Help the U.S. athletes we talk about in this episode race against the best in the world. When Devon Clarke lined up for the national gravel championship race this past April, most riders and fans didn't really know how fast she was. Sure, she'd won the provincial road race the previous summer, but still, she wasn't as well known as her competitors Maghalie Rochette and Ruby West. At the end of the 108-km event in Ancaster, Ont., Clarke became the country's first national gravel champion, a year after she started racing bikes seriously. Since then, she's won the Blue Mountains Gravel Fondo—which qualifies her for the gravel world championships in Italy this October—and the Reggie Ramble. She now has her sights set on bigger gravel events. Find out more about this rider from Collingwood, Ont.
Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by Rapha I've got something a bit different for you on the pod this week, but it's a fascinating topic and one that has really gained traction in women's sport over the past few years. I'm chatting to Maghalie Rochette - she's a Canadian cyclo cross rider and mountain biker, she came to the sport from a background in running and triathlon, and she also has her own successful podcast called Fever Talk. But what sets Maghalie apart is that she is known for talking openly about racing as a female and all the struggles that come along with that. On her pod she launched a super successful series where she goes into depth about the challenges for women racing during their menstrual cycle, and in doing so she has created a whole platform where people feel comfortable talking about this topic that was previously something of a taboo. It's so refreshing to hear how open she is about it, and fascinating to hear how she has used the science to figure out that not only is it something that does not have to hold you back, but it's something that can actually make you stronger. We are so aware of the difference between men and women in the professional sense – the prize money, the racing, the equality and the wage gap, but it's interesting to hear about the physiological differences. And it's refreshing to hear Maghalie's take, that racing as a female doesn't necessarily mean it is harder – it just means it's important to understand your body so that you can turn it into an advantage. It brings up some interesting questions that are relevant to both male and female athletes on how we can use science to understand our bodies better, and in the process learn how to get the most out of ourselves during training and racing, to learn to listen to your body, and how to find the balance between performance and wellbeing. I hope you enjoy the listen! Cheers, Mitch

This week we talk with professional bike racer, Maghalie Rochette, from Quebec, Canada. She is good. Really good. Maghalie came in 2nd in the Canadian National Championships, September, 2021; Is three-times Canadian Cyclocross Champion, three-times Pan American Cyclocross Champion and a Cyclocross World Cup winner. She has her sights set on greater goals this season! But what, you may be asking, does this have to do with beekeeping? Good question! We all know we beekeepers are a generally thought of as being a bit odd to most other people. Admittedly, most people think anyone who willingly puts their bare hands into a box of thousands of stinging insects, is, let's say, eccentric. That distinction is something we also wear as a badge of distinction and honor. We we see the beauty in the honey bee and the hive. So Kim and Jeff thought, let's turn this back on itself. Who are the beekeepers who you would never guess are beekeepers? Recently, they talked with the NYPD Official Beekeepers, Darren Mays. He wears a badge and pistol along with his smoker and hive tool. Today's guest, Maghalie is paid to ride bikes fast and she wears lycra to work. Not your typical beekeeper. Listen to today's episode to learn how beekeeping and bike racing are actually quite complementary. Anyone can be a beekeeper! We hope you enjoy the episode. Maghalie Rochette is a three-time Canadian Cyclocross Champion, three-time Pan American Cyclocross Champion and Cyclocross World Cup winner. After racing for the Clif Pro team for six years, she decided to strike out on her own as a privateer in 2018. In this interview, she and Payson talk about what prompted her decision to leave her position on such a legendary team, how she learned the hard way to negotiate sponsorship contracts and advocate for herself, and where she hopes to expand her career outside of racing. They also talk about the exhaustion that comes with running your own program and why she makes sure to set aside time to do nothing. She talks about the difficulties of racing in Europe that go beyond jet lag and the language barrier, how she wants to bring cyclocross into the mainstream in Canada, and why she's grateful to be racing as a woman at this point in cycling.

Maghalie Rochette, the Canadian and Pan Am cyclocross champion, has been in Europe for more than a month racing. In the past two weeks, things have gotten tougher for her. Cases of Covid-19 are growing in Europe. Countries have entered lockdowns. Some races are getting cancelled. But, oddly, others are forging ahead. On the Monday following Koppenberg Cross, which Rochette had raced, she was in her camper van that carries her entire support crew: David Gagnon, Rochette’s partner, coach, mechanic and it’s probably fair to say general manager of Team Rochette, and their dog Mia. It’s a small, nimble operation, but they are wrestling with some big questions. They had come to Europe to race for months, which is a challenge for North American riders in the best of times. Now they are wondering how safe it will be for them if they continue on. What if one of them should fall ill? How long will the racing continue? From a distance, it might be easy to say, “Well, if you don’t feel comfortable, you should just leave Europe.” But, cyclocross is Rochette’s job. Now, there’s not enough high-level racing on this side of the globe. If racing continues in Europe, and if she doesn’t participate, it will have a negative effect on the next season. Rochette gets into these and other dilemmas.Rochette also talks about racing at the mountain bike world championships in early October, her creative projects and even board games.

The Vuelta a España came to a thrilling conclusion last week with a series of exciting stages across central Spain. On this week's episode of The VeloNews Show, Fred and Andy deliver their final thoughts on this Vuelta, and go inside the two stages that nearly upended the race. Stage 17 saw brutal crosswinds decimate the main field, as Deceuninck-Quick Step and Movistar looked to take control of the race. Andy takes us inside the chaotic crosswinds stage at the race, and explains why many riders said it was the hardest day of the Vuelta. Then, Movistar drew criticism after it pushed the pace following a nasty pileup on stage 19. The entire ordeal penned another chapter in cycling's 'wait or race' debate, which erupts every few years. Was Movistar right to keep racing after the crash, or did they push the competition beyond the line? The grand tour season may be over, but the cyclocross season is just getting started. And this week we hear from Maghalie Rochette, who just won the World Cup opener in Iowa City, Iowa. Maghalie is a longtime racer on the North American mountain bike and cyclocross circuit. Last year she left Team Clif Bar and struck out on her own, with her own self-made team. We talk with Maghalie about the lessons she learned as a privateer racer, and why her World Cup win was so special.

Recently, the Pan Am cyclocross championships came to Midland, Ont. Many of Canada’s top CXers were there vying for the intercontinental honours. For more on the Pan Am CX champs, check out video from within the elite men’s race.
