On Episode 130 of The Film ‘89 Podcast, Neil & Skye will be grabbing their glow-rods and avoiding physical contact greetings as they jump forward in time from a crime ridden Los Angeles of 1996, to a seemingly harmonious, but borderline fascist utopian 2032 San Angles as they discuss the 1993 action-science-fiction cult classic, Demolition Man, from producer Joel Silver and then first time director, Marco Brambilla. It stars Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes and Sandra Bullock in her breakout role. The guys discuss how this seemingly by-the-numbers ‘90s action film has transcended its roots due to it having layers of subtly clever social commentary and a level of mind boggling prescience that has helped it continue to age like a fine wine with each passing decade.

Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! Today, we're diving into the action-packed and satirically sharp world of Demolition Man. Released in 1993, this film directed by Marco Brambilla stars Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes in roles that perfectly blend intense action with comedic timing.Demolition Man takes us to a future where violence is nearly obsolete, and the society of San Angeles is governed by a pacifist regime that has sanitized nearly every aspect of life. The film kicks off in 1996, with LAPD Sergeant John Spartan (Stallone), who is wrongly convicted of a crime during his pursuit of the psychopathic crime lord Simon Phoenix (Snipes). Both are cryogenically frozen as part of their sentence, with their release set for a time when their brand of violence is supposed to be outdated.Fast forward to 2032, Phoenix is accidentally thawed during a parole hearing and finds himself in a future ill-equipped to handle his brand of chaos. With no one able to match his violence, the pacified police force is helpless, leading to the decision to thaw Spartan, hoping his old-school ways can stop Phoenix once more. The film brilliantly juxtaposes Spartan's brute force and archaic methods with the gentle, almost comedic society of the future.Demolition Man explores the perennial debate of freedom versus safety. The film questions whether a society can become so obsessed with peace and order that it loses essential freedoms, and whether those like Spartan, who are deemed necessary evils, can ever truly fit in or retire in such a world. Why It's a Must-Watch For fans of classic action films and dystopian futures, Demolition Man offers a unique take that's both entertaining and insightful. It's a film that invites you not just to enjoy the explosive confrontations but also to ponder deeper questions about our future societal choices. So, buckle up as we revisit the thrilling, icy-cold showdowns of Demolition Man, exploring what happens when a society's desire for peace faces the ultimate test against unbridled chaos. Whether you're in it for the action or the social commentary, there's plenty to uncover in this Stallone-Snipes classic.

It stars Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock, Benjamin Bratt, Denis Leary, Bill Cobbs, and Nigel Hawthorne. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the 1993 cyberpunk action/comedy film, Demolition Man – directed by Marco Brambilla, written by Peter Lenkov, Robert Reneau, and Daniel Waters; and starring Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock and Denis Leary. A police officer is brought out of suspended animation in prison to pursue an old ultra-violent nemesis who is loose in a non-violent future society. This movie is so much goddamn fun as it pairs two of the biggest stars of the era, Stallone and Snipes, as they battle each other across time. This the most 90-iest bombastic cyberpunk film of that period that is pure 100-percent running on adrenaline and creatine! You could hear the neck-veins pop out of Stallone chiseled body, and Snipes just unleashes his inner cartoon villain. And did I mention it's also really fucking funny? Just over thirty years ago, we saw the unheralded release of this latest futuristic action thriller directed by Marco Brambilla starring Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes....only it was actually more of a comedy. :o And Stallone was actually being INTENTIONALLY funny for a change.....and here was Snipes at the peak of his stardom playing a Joker-like homicidal villain....and playing a prominent supporting role was a younger up-and-coming actress named Sandra Bullock who kind of steals the movie? Yup this movie ended up surprising audiences and critics alike, not only becoming a solid box office hit but building a legacy of being one of the more quotable and meme-able comedies of its era. It takes place in the not-too-distant future of 2030 in the utopian (?) metropolis of San Angeles where there is no crime, no profanity, and no place to eat out besides Taco Bell! :) A master criminal Simon Phoenix (Snipes) has been released into this environment and they are clearly NOT ready for him....so what better way to take on a maniac than sending in ANOTHER maniac from the past who would be the notorious cop John Spartan (Stallone)? It's STALLONE vs. SNIPES! Directed by Marco Brambilla, Demolition Man is the science fiction action film starring Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes. Luke and Jae return to 1993 to review and celebrate the 30th anniversary of this futuristic flick which had a four-part limited-series comic adaption published by DC Comics, written by Gary Cohn. With innocent victims caught in the crossfire in Los Angeles' intensifying war on crime, both cop John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone) and violent thug Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes) are sentenced to a state of frozen incarceration known as "CryoPrison." When Spartan is finally thawed 36 years later, it's 2032, and Los Angeles is now a pacifist utopia called San Angeles. But with Phoenix again on the loose, Spartan must team up with future cop Lenina (Sandra Bullock) to apprehend the killer.
Frozen in a block of ice this man of action and mystery unthaws to a future they could not have expected. Austin Powers.......sorry John Spartan is an action cop dedicated to the freedoms of the late 80s and blowing stuff up. A hero to the future, and the best spokesman for Taco Bell. It's Die Hard in a future shock satire! For this week's episode, Phil and Liam are joined by special guest Nick De Semlyen, editor of Empire magazine and author of the excellent book THE LAST ACTION HEROES. Together they unfreeze DEMOLITION MAN – a deceptively sophisticated sci-fi movie that explores, deconstructs and satirizes action movie archetypes. In a dystopian LA, renegade cop John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone) apprehends his psychotic arch nemesis Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes) during a chaotic assault, but Spartan is wrongly blamed for a large number of civilian deaths, and both men are placed in a new cryogenic-penitentiary. When they are awakened 36 years later, Spartan and Phoenix find themselves in a peaceful and seemingly utopian future society, where they quickly resume their violent feud…exposing the sinister truth about this brave new world in the process. Stallone is one of the central figures in Nick's book, and together the guys analyze the disparity between Sly's screen persona and who he is in real life – something that Nick can speak to from personal experience. Nick also discusses the insights gained when he interviewed the film's director, the mercurial Marco Brambilla, a wildly talented artist who seems to have an interest in exploring weighty philosophical themes, and there's some beefy discussions about the rest of the film's eclectic cast, that includes Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock, Nigel Hawthorne, Denis Leary and Jack Black, who appears briefly as ‘Wasteland Scrap #2'! The boys grab a quick Taco Bell before heading over to ‘Die Hard Oscars' in their futuristic tuxedos, and Liam and Nick collaborate to great effect in the ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz! So alleviate your boggles, enhance your calm and listen now! “I'm wearing more kimonos now than I was in 1993” The panel of peril have convened once again to discuss the dystopian sci fi, action film Demolition Man (1993). We then try to improve upon the villain's diabolical plan for the honour of choosing next week's film and hosting the pod. Directed by Marco Brambilla and starring Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock and Sir Nigel Hawthorne (!), they certainly don't make them like this anymore. See the trailer here! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0B5v6QZ5R3g ********PLOT SPOILER ALERT******** Obsessive San Angeles mayor Dr Raymond Cocteau thaws out history's most dangerous cryogenically frozen super-criminal and brainwashes him into hunting the charismatic leader of an underground group of outlawed nonconformists. Only one man can possibly stop him: the also cryogenically frozen John Spartan. But will he succeed in his mission to demolish them? Just what did the panel make of this one? How on Earth can they improve upon the villain's dastardly scheme? And who the devil will be victorious in this week's competition?
This week the group carries on with "these are a few of our favorite things" with Sarcastro's pick 1993's action extravaganza from Director, Marco Brambilla, Demolition Man. A movie with so many poor choices you can't believe any of it actually made for a movie people would love, but apparently so many did. Starring Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock, the late Glenn Shadix, Denis Leary and an uncredited cameo by Rob Schneider that everyone thought he was in the opening credits. Also Fatty reminds everyone of the toys released for the movie that weren't at all an afterthought.

Hello! Welcome to the ninth episode of Pints, Camera... Action! It's the end of round 2 and back to Mark for his second pick, we stick in 1993 for the endless action movie Demolition Man. A directorial debut to remember for Marco Brambilla sees Hollywood megastar Sylvester Stallone become Los Angeles cop John Spartan, AKA the Demolition Man. Spartan is controversially cryogenically frozen because of his over ambitious efforts to bring criminal mastermind Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes) to justice. Phoenix escapes from the Cryo-Prison in the distant future and wreaks havok meaning only one man can save the day. Assisted by the frustrated and nostalgic cop Lenina Huxley (Sandra Bullock), Spartan discovers that in the future not everything is as perfect as it first seems. Away from the action the boys discuss the usual plethora of hidden gems from the dark recesses of the cutting room floor. Get the beers in folks, it's time for Pints, Camera... Action!

Climb out of the deep freeze because it’s time for another B-movie bonus episode! This time around, Steven and Sean are hunting down the baddest mo-fo with bleached blond hair of all time in the Marco Brambilla film, Demolition Man. What a tour de force ‘90s action film! Could there be a more perfect movie for trying times or any time? We think not! I mean, c’mon, we’ve got an ultra-violent bad guy and the police officer who’s sworn to track down and stop him both waking up in a non-violent future after being frozen for killing people in the past. A future that’s also completely filled with Taco Bells! If that doesn’t make you want to turn this one on and watch all of it right this second, we don’t know what will. We think this is a B-movie at its finest. It’s got strangely compelling characters that you want to root for and against, it’s got more explosions than a fireworks display gone terribly wrong, and it’s got seashells to clean yourself after using the bathroom. (As a quick aside, what the heck were those all about? Steven has his theories, but they’re still a possibly horrifying mystery.) We don’t want to totally give away our final verdict about this film here in the show notes, but we do want to say how thrilled we were to see a mid-‘90s movie that still holds up on the sound design and cinematography fronts. This may be one of the more ridiculous (in the best way) films we’ve seen, but that doesn’t mean the production wasn’t excellent. In fact, it was top notch! To close this out, as always, be well. In 1993 Marco Brambilla brought us a story of utopia, a story of dystopia, and a story of an imaginary wonderland where Taco Bell doesn’t send you to abdominal distress, Demolition Man. Demolition Man is the tale of two men; John Spartan and the epically psychotic Simon Phoenix played by Sly Stallone and Wesley Snipes respectively. In 1996, Phoenix cuts his nose off to spite his face and creates a scenario to entrap Spartan for the death of 40 hostages while also imprisoning himself. They are both sentenced to a cryo-facility and 36 years later, Phoenix is thawed to assist with dispatching a terrorist threat. Spartan is then thawed to dispatch Phoenix when he goes on a crazy killing spree, which no one ever saw as a possibility... Demolition Man also stars the gorgeous Sandra Bullock, Benjamin Bratt, and even a little snippet of Jack Black if you look close enough. It was made for $57 million and brought in a massive box office of $159 million, but does it hold up? Listen in as Jon, Colin, and Brent debate bad planning, what that towel was for, and try to determine if this flick holds up or if it should just be demolished, man.

The government has revealed the very simple model driving their public policy response to COVID-19. With focus placed on macro modelling general claims, the government must narrow its attention to micro measures and a timeline for society's recovery (1:26-23:44) On the weekend the IPA called for a safe and responsible roll back of social restrictions, and now the debate's started on removing petty restrictions and starting economic recovery. (23:44-36:13) Parliament has decided to sit for the last time until August, just when social and economic policy decisions need more scrutiny than ever (36:13-54:56) Your hosts Scott Hargreaves and Dr Chris Berg are joined by the IPA's Andrew Bushnell as they answer these questions as well as share their isolation culture picks. This week's picks include the computer game Surviving Mars, Sarah Bakewell's How to Live / A Life of Montaigne, and Demolition Man by Marco Brambilla. 035 - It's our first Stallone movie, AND our first Snipes movie. It's criminal that it's taken us this long, but what a great entry point for a chat about these two lat pack stalwarts. This picture is a bit of an oddball: part sci-fi, part satire, part full-blown lat pack action, this didn't open to great reviews back in the day, but is that really fair? looking at it's sci-fi merits, there are a number of future-predictions that this film made that are relatively on-point (seashells aside). Also, Dennis Leary. Remember Dennis Leary? He's in this, being all 'Dennis Leary' and stuff.
This week we look back at October 8th, 1993. That's when Yo La Tengo released their album, Painful, and Marco Brambilla released the movie, Demolition Man. Painful Demolition Man Runaway Train article
1993's Demolition Man is one of my top films! The commentary is worth listening to. A police officer is brought out of suspended animation in prison to pursue an old ultra-violent nemesis who is loose in a non-violent future society. Directed by Marco Brambilla, the same guy that directed Kanye West's Power! Filmmaker Commentary Hosted by Reginald Titus Jr. Co-hosted by Casey G. Smith
NEW JACK CITY (1991) raised the stakes for gangster films and put a spotlight on the rise of crack in inner cities. Cutting edge and concise, this film is a fast-paced crime thriller that is still relevant almost 30 years after its release. ▶️ (02:07) When a high-time crime lord rises to power and introduces crack to the surrounding city, a few rouge cops vow to take down the gangster-led drug ring destroying their community. Discussions include: The real-life inspiration behind NEW JACK CITY, how a first-time director, authentic actors and crisp storytelling came together for a truly larger-than-life movie, the film’s strong attitude towards drugs and gang life, resulting in an awareness of a powerful moral voice. Breakout roles for the cast will be discussed, as well as a NEW JACK CITY comparison to SCARFACE (1983) — breaking down the main characters, drug usage and the music in both films. *Starring Wesley Snipes, Allen Payne, Ice-T, Chris Rock, Mario Van Peebles, Judd Nelson, Bill Cobbs. Directed by Mario Van Peebles.* ▶️ (37:20) **PICKS OF THE WEEK** Lindsay’s Pick — DEMOLITION MAN (1993): After being cryogenically frozen in 1996, a 20th century criminal mastermind and risk-taking cop are reanimated only to find a very controlled society within a crime-free world and inept police force in this satirical, dystopian popcorn flick. *Starring Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock, Benjamin Bratt, Denis Leary, Bill Cobbs. Directed by Marco Brambilla.* Justin’s Pick — BAADASSSSS! (2003): In this behind-the-scenes, unapologetic, brash docudrama, Mario Van Peebles portrays his father, Melvin Van Peebles, during the fascinating and challenging production of his father’s film, SWEET SWEETBACK’S BAADASSSSS SONG (1971). *Starring: Mario Van Peebles, David Alan Grier Nia Long, Rainn Wilson, Terry Crews. Directed by: Mario Van Peebles.* ▶️ (53:12) MURRAYMOMENT: One difficult period in Billy’s life was the death of his friend, John Belushi. In this MurrayMoment, we’ll dive into Billy’s feelings about John’s drug addiction and how he was able to forever eulogize him in THE RAZOR’S EDGE (1984). ▶️ NEXT UP: RE-ANIMATOR (1985)!! On this week's episode, the gang celebrates another year on the air by talking about the totally great, Demolition Man! How did this whole society forget how life was a mere thirty years prior? What's with Ventura getting almost entirely cut out of the film? And did they really swap Taco Bell for Pizza Hut overseas? PLUS: George W. Bush loves Mountain Dew! Demolition Man stars Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock, Benjamin Bratt, and Denis Leary; directed by Marco Brambilla.

The film tells the story of two men: an evil crime lord and a risk-taking police officer. Cryogenically frozen in 1996, they are restored to life in the year 2032 to find mainstream society changed and all crime seemingly eliminated. Some aspects of the film allude to Aldous Huxley's dystopian novel, Brave New World. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
