Send us a textStep into the shadowy world of "Pathfinder," Marcus Nispel's forgotten 2007 action film that stands as a fascinating study in missed opportunities. Released in the same week as Zack Snyder's "300" with a comparable budget, this Karl Urban-starring vehicle attempted similar visual flair but stumbled where "300" soared. The premise holds genuine intrigue: a Viking child, abandoned and raised by Native Americans in 800 AD North America, must later defend his adoptive people when his bloodthirsty biological culture returns to pillage and destroy. It's a setup ripe with potential for exploring identity, belonging, and choosing one's own path—yet "Pathfinder" reduces these rich themes to a straightforward revenge tale drowning in murky cinematography.Throughout our discussion, we unpack the film's fundamental flaws: characters without names or development, confusing action sequences where you can barely distinguish one Viking from another, and logical inconsistencies that break immersion. The Viking villains pursue destruction for destruction's sake, forgoing more historically accurate and compelling motivations like resource acquisition or taking slaves. Even the special edition's reportedly excised sex scene becomes a curious footnote in a film already struggling with basic storytelling coherence. What makes "Pathfinder" particularly fascinating is comparing it to Nispel's later work on "Conan the Barbarian," revealing a director who seemed to learn some lessons while repeating others. For fans of Karl Urban, we recommend skipping this misfire and heading straight to "Dredd" for a masterclass in how to use the actor's talents effectively. Whether you're a student of film looking to understand what makes a movie work (by examining one that doesn't) or simply curious about this forgotten chapter in action cinema history, our deep dive into "Pathfinder" offers both entertainment and insight into how even promising concepts can lose their way in execution.Written lovingly by AIBe our friend!Dan: @shakybaconTony: @tonydczechAnd follow the podcast on IG: @hatewatchingDAT

(Touchstone Pictures DVD Cover)Am 31. Dezember 1999 drehte die ganze Welt am Rad! Was sollte das neue Jahrtausend bringen: Sturmfluten?

Learn more about your ad choices. Reinhard Denke, a native of Texas and graduate of USC Film School, got his start in 2009 with his spec script Sex, #Greed, Money, Murder and Chicken Fried Steak about the Cullen Davis murders in Fort Worth, Texas. Reinhard also co-wrote Mizmoon, about the Patty Hearst kidnapping, for director David Brown and Clear Horizon. The Hollywood Time Travel Series is a compendium of novels that revolve around a young time traveler named Evan West. Evan lives in present-day Hollywood, California, a typical millennial working in the entertainment industry as a #filmtrailer editor, a job he does not particularly relish. Evan dreams of one day becoming a successful screenwriter and Hollywood film director, climbing to the top of the very slippery pole called success. He has the typical problems in his life – never can find a girlfriend who appreciates him and always at odds financially. But he lives, breathes and exists for everything film, his heart beats at 24 frames per second. He's an expert in film #history as well and a stickler for detail. "The trailer is what I wanted this movie to be." This week, the Brides head back to Texas for a recap of the most aggressively "meh" film in our podcast's short history: the 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This is one of the most toothless, gutless, boring entries in the early 2000s American remake-a-palooza (this is the one that started it all, so....you're welcome?). It's even more aggravating because the original film is so wildly unsettling and transgressive, and there's nothing unsettling or transgressive about this thing. Along the way, the Brides discuss the two or three things that make this movie kind of palatable, namely OG TCM cinematographer Daniel Pearl's return and his GORGEOUS use of light - seriously, this movie looks spectacular. We also marvel at how long Eric Balfour played a teenager on film, Alysa shares her era-appropriate crush on Mike Vogel, and how every single person in this movie is definitely trying their hardest, but to what end? TO WHAT END?! If you want a 2003 movie with gross chainsaw content, definitely go for Alejandre Aja's Haute Tension instead of this slog. Also, we ponder the effectiveness of curing human meat like a nice prosciutto. And seriously, go watch the trailer for this movie. It's one of the best trailers ever made, which makes the actual film's soullessness all the more annoying. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. 2003. Directed by Marcus Nispel. Written by Scott Kosar. Starring Jessica Biel, Mike Vogel, Eric Balfour, Erika Leerhsen, Jonathan Tucker, and R. Lee Ermey.

This week on Total Movie Recall, we find a new zest for life in 2001's Amelie. Steve gets wistful recalling his time working in a porn shop, and Ryan reveals his ignorance about Paris. But is it ignorance? Don't we kind of all know what Paris is really like? Smelly and smoky and rude? Not according to Amelie. Paris is a place of magical realism, true love, and tastefully decorated porn shops. Amelie (2001) d.
