We were so thrilled to welcome one of our amazing Boston Marathoners, Lauren Hitchens, to the podcast.Lauren is an experienced marathon runner, having completed ten marathons since 2016, including all six Marathon Majors. She set her PR of 3:38:35 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon, qualifying her for the 2025 Boston Marathon, her first. In spring 2024, after successfully running the Tokyo Marathon, Lauren experienced pain in her foot that has taken her on a journey of seeking a path to healing that has required multiple expert opinions, an unconventional approach to training for Boston (including the use of tools like Lever and Fluid Running), and a reimagining of her goals for her first Boston. Lauren balances her training with her responsibilities as a mother and business executive at Google. We are so grateful to Lauren for sharing her inspiring story! This week's show brought to you by: MAS Iron Outside of training deficiencies, low iron is one of the most common reasons for poor results during workouts and races. Recent research indicates that almost 56% of male runners and 86% of female runners suffer from an iron deficiency that severely hampers performance. The problem with eating iron-rich foods or supplementing with traditional iron supplements is that iron is notoriously difficult for the body to absorb and utilize. In fact, only about 25% of dietary iron found in animal sources is absorbed while 17% or less of the iron from plant sources is absorbed. But MAS Iron has found a way to combat these absorption issues to ensure you can get the iron you need for health and performance. By combining the most efficiently absorbed form of elemental iron with clinically proven ingredients to aid in absorption, MAS Iron performs like no other iron product on the market. In fact, clinical research has shown the combination of ingredients in MAS Iron can quadruple absorption and increase bioavailability by 30%, all while reducing GI issues by 50%. Check out the research and the results for yourself at masedge.com/iron. Runnersconnect fans will automatically save 20% on any purchase. Let me give a couple of headlines from the past two years of today's I Could Never Do That guest, Emily Ballenger. @emilybatx Shock pains in her face, the Berlin Marathon, pregnancy, miscarriage, another pregnancy, the selling of a business, a brain tumor, a birth, massive brain surgery, the London marathon, and the completion of the Six World Marathon Majors. These events would throw anyone off balance (literally and figuratively), but Emily has used them to create a foundation of stability of what's important in her life. Marathon training truly is a metaphor for her last two years. Sometimes you don't get the run or the race you want, but you always walk away stronger and more accomplished. The growth comes from the lessons learned and not the time on a clock. Emily has no idea what the future holds for her health, but she lives boldly for her baby Beau and her family, proving that in those "I could never do that" moments of despair, a little forward motion is sometimes all you need.

Ep. 72 Leah Fitzgerald *Interview starts at 21:10* Marathon runner, mother of three and vegan athlete Leah Fitzgerald speaks on her journey into running and what it takes to achieve at 2.46 marathon! It's no surprise that the level of commitment to run at such a speed takes a huge amount of grit, consistency and determination, and Leah exemplifies all three. Leah got into running after having her first child as a way to get back into some general fitness and set a positive example as a mum. Overtime this snowballed into chasing the sub-3 hour marathon, followed by competing on the world stage at the Marathon Majors. Leah was hooked! Leah talks us through her highly structured training week, what an average session looks like, how she recovers and her nutrition plan. We learn about the difficulties of balancing work and being a mum, how she stays motivated, driving forces and what she thinks about during her training to stay strong. After the covid years Leah came returned to racing with fierce determination, achieving her PB of 2.46 in Berlin 2022. We hear about her prep for this race and how it all unfolded on the day. Leah is not stopping here and has lots on the cards for next year and beyond. Leah's love for running and desire for progression is infectious, if you're looking for training motivation than look no further than this ep! The narrative over the past week has been that we all can't wait to just flush 2020 down the metaphorical toilet and move on with our collective lives into 2021, which can't possibly be worse than what we just went through. This would suggest that in making a year-end wrap-up list of "winners and losers" that the latter category would be remarkably easy to assemble, while identifying those who "won 2020" a touch tricky. Certainly, we all lost in a sense in 2020 (don't worry, we cover that). But a number of people (and companies) thrived in these uncertain times. We unpack how and why certain runners and brands somehow "won the Pandemic," while others struggled (and one in particular downright failed its people). Joost De Raeymaeker, a native Belgian, currently resides in Luanda, Angola, and is arguably the best marathoner in the world in M50. He's on a mission to win his age group in all of the Marathon Majors. So far he's accomplished half his goal (Berlin, NYC and Tokyo) with a 2:26:10 PB in Berlin in 2019. He ran in primary school, but then thought it would be a lot cooler to play guitar in a rock band, only picking up running again in 2012. In this episode we discuss: -Living and running in Luanda -His athletic story -What his training looks like today -His perspective on running and sport -His shoe reviews of the Endorphin Pro, Vaporfly, Alpha Fly and Adidas Pro Producer: Andre Laboy Song: Breakadawn, by Mike Quinn
The 2020 London Marathon featured upsets, disappointments, sprint finishes, and even a shoe controversy (or two). The XC's John Lofranco and Michael Doyle each pick three big winners and losers from the elite-only event in St. James' Park.

What if there were a U.S. Marathon Majors? What 5 marathons would they be?
Its been 6 weeks, give or take, since we moved to this alternative reality we find ourselves in today. The running world continues to be rocked by the impact of the pandemic. As we publish EP 3 of the UnBalanced Podcast I’ve read that The Berlin Marathon is officially cancelled. What does this mean for the other fall Marathon Majors taking place before and right after the original September date for Berlin. The world of specialty run continues to face these challenges head on, ensuring that consumer needs are met as more and more people are opting to pick up their running shoes and kit to head outside for some solitude in the form of a run, hike, or walk. Many miles north in the great state of Alaska a running specialty store named Skinny Raven is providing the running community with everything they need to ensure they can enjoy this solitude. And this week we catch up with the owner of said store, Daniel Greenhalgh. Daniel is one of the great people. Someone you meet once but feel like you’ll know for a long time. He has worked at Skinny Raven since 1996 becoming President of the business and finally outright owner in September, 2017. Kevin and I sit down and talk to Danny about his background and how he went from employee to owner of this great institution. He gives us insight to what makes Skinny Raven what it is and how the Anchorage running scene is different than that of the lower 48. Long winters mean more trail running, and more studs in shoes. Danny talks about the community and how they are rallying around Skinny Raven, and how his staff have supported the closure, not complaining about hours being cut, rather, offering to work for free. We really enjoy talking to Danny and hopefully you get more insights on how these businesses are dealing with life during Covid-19. Peace Keith and Kevin.
It's taken 205 episodes but finally meet the Grandfather of The Bad Boy Running Podcast: Danny Coyle. Danny was the editor of Men's Running during the period when Jody and David wrote for the publication and was responsible for bringing them together at Sierra Leone. After leaving Men's Running, Danny went on to become head of digital and social media at Abbott World Marathon Majors, which has within its stable the world's most famous marathons including Boston, London and New York. Jody and David speak to Danny about working with the Marathon Majors. Danny also talks about his own race, London's only 24 hour race, The Spitfire Scramble and how that came about. Enjoy! As the first marathon of significance, Houston is the informal kick off of a new season. Two Canadian records were set—the women’s marathon and half— along with another crazy performance by Rory Linkletter on the men’s side. This should trigger one hell of a spring, as multiple runners will be vying for an Olympic spot. John Lofranco and Michael Doyle break it all down in the pod.

Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, New York og Tokyo.
