Interview by Kris PetersGolden Robot Global Entertainment is a worldwide brand that prides itself on being home to some of the most legendary bands and up-and-coming artists in the world. Starting with just one band in 2015, the company has expanded quickly to meet demand and spans a multitude of genres and styles. They are a truly global network, with bands such as Filter, Orgy, The Answer, Shepherd's Reign, Rose Tattoo and countless more on their successful roster. But there is much more to Golden Robot Records than meets the eye, with Mark Alexander, Golden Robot Global Entertainment Manager, joining HEAVY to tell us about some exciting new developments that will benefit musicians and artists of all levels of experience and stature."Golden Robot Records started nearly ten years ago now," he began. "It basically started because my son was on Australia's Got Talent - he was about nine at the time, he's 21 now - and he nearly won the show. Coming out of the show, we thought, we don't want him to be a novelty. We want him to have some sort of legacy. So we put him together with a couple of great guys and fantastic musicians - Steve Balbi was one of them - and they made this great album. They called it Orbiter and the band was called Moon. When I shopped that around, nobody was interested, nobody gave a shit. So I thought, you know what? I'm gonna do this myself. I'd given everybody a little present to thank them, a little golden robot, and when it was time to name the company we named it Golden Robot Records. We started off hard. We were signing some great bands in the States and Europe. I was working with Derek Shulman, who was the ex-president of Roadrunner Records, and him and I went along and got involved in quite a lot of things from about 2015, and we just kept growing. (but) this is a different year for us. We've had the hits and misses over the years. We've had some things that have gone to number one. We've had some things that have been a disaster, but that's the business. The good thing about being an Aussie and working in the global world is if you make a mistake, you can apologise and fix it and get on with it. If you're doing something well, we'll celebrate it with you. It served its purpose, and it served us well, and we've worked with some great bands. We've got global distribution through physical and digital - and we've just changed recently to an even better set up - great PR, great marketing people. My team today is the best it's ever been. We've had a few changes over the last six months, and I've got a really good team that just gets on with it. We're just in it for the music and to get the word out about Aussie music across the world. It's exciting."In the full interview, Mark tells us about the new developments at Golden Robot Records including Robot Distro, how to best get your music out there for mass consumption, what sorts of things a band should have done as a unit before seeking representation, how to successfully negotiate the music industry, how this all helps Australian bands and music, their new singing with rock band ORGY, future developments and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Lulie and David are joined by guest Mark Alexander, the Producer of Art of Accomplishment's Great Decisions course, to do a deeper dive into how decisions are made. They discuss having competing wants, Popperian problem-solving, the difference between 'shoulds' and a non-coercive (fun!) version of morality, emotion, and the participation of different subconscious processes in decision making. Mark asks "What are 'hangups'?", and David discusses mental blocks and how to get back to a creatively problem-solving state of mind. Lulie shares a problem she has with getting back to that creative place, namely: when do you go into your resisted feelings, and when do you analyse the problem? 00:00 Introducing: Lulie, David and Mark! 00:33 Competing wants vs 'shoulds' 02:23 Morality: coercive vs non-coercive 04:35 Why would we need the word 'should'? 05:55 Wants rest on morality! 06:51 Needle phobia example (of conflicting wants) 09:05

This week we're replaying a classic episode where your hosts Steve Lowry and Yvonne Godfrey interview Jim M. Perdue, Sr. and Jim M. Perdue, Jr of Perdue and Kidd (https://www.perdueandkidd.com/). Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here to Rate and Review Episode Details: Texas trial lawyers Jim M. Perdue, Sr. and Jim M. Perdue, Jr. -- Perdue & Kidd's father-and-son trial team -- take a look back at the first case they ever tried together. Listen as this accomplished trial team explains how they secured justice for the wrongful death of a patient who died as a result of the negligence of a nurse anesthetist during routine orthopedic surgery. In September 1997, 40-year-old Mark Alexander was scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder, but the anesthesiologist left him in the hands of an inexperienced nurse anesthetist, who failed to provide Mark with adequate ventilation during the surgery and neglected to record Mark's heart rate for 17 minutes. As a result, Mark was deprived of adequate blood flow to the brain for 10 to 14 minutes and remained in a coma for two weeks before passing away on October 3, 1997. Involved in the case while Mark was still in a coma, Jim M. Perdue, Sr. was able to collect powerful pieces of evidence he presented at trial: phone recordings and messages from Mark's family. In spite of the defense's attempts to cast blame on the other anesthesiologists and professional associations named in the lawsuit or to distance themselves from having any role in Mark's medical care, the father-and-son legal team was able to hold the doctors accountable for their contribution to Mark's substandard care and proximate cause of death. Jim M. Perdue, Sr. and Jim M. Perdue, Jr. strategically engaged the jury's senses with impressive storytelling and by sharing a visual timeline of the tragic events, a video of Mark languishing in a coma and the hard data comparison of the anesthetist's records versus the medical equipment records. In October 1999, a Harris County, Texas jury unanimously found the four defendants negligent and awarded $3.6 million in damages to Mark's wife and surviving parents. Trippet varede i flere måneder.

This show is dedicated to Mark and Nancy Alexander of School Bell Farms. Long time supporters of the show and our LFTN Community. After a long battle with cancer, Mark passed away last Tuesday at home. We will miss his sarcastic wit, new business ideas, and passion for life and he will love in our memories and every time someone pulls a good practical joke at events. Today, I will share thoughts on victimhood and ways to opt out of the mindset so that you can make the best of what is happening around you. We also celebrate the life of long-time show supporter and friend Mark Alexander of School Bell Farms. Event Highlights LFTN Christmas Reception: https://www.livingfreeintennessee.com/2021/11/17/2021-christmas-reception/ Self Reliance Festival: https://www.livingfreeintennessee.com/selfreliancefestival/ Tales from the Prepper Pantry Thanksgiving Feast as a Daily Thing Tonight's Casserole Recipe Firing up the freeze Dryer to finish the rest of the summer bounty currently stored in the freezer Making way for venison and beef Illness treatment from the pantry: mullein, elderberry syrup, herbal teas from Angie's Gardens Operation Independence Coaching from a friend on increasing cashflow Purging all the Extras (Flour mill, tractor, cars, etc) Main topic of the Show: Episode 507: Opt Out of Victimhood Thoughts on Victimhood and how our personal reaction to problems furthers the cycle. Feeling defeated/helpless vs acting defeated/helpless Predatory people Self worth and perspective Signs that you are in a victim mindset Seeking reassurance, validation and sympathy for things that happen in your life Thinking or saying “I can't” Feeling like the world is against you and you can do nothing about it Taking things personally that are not that at all Listing reasons why offered solutions will never work Just because you change your mindset, does not mean that bad things will not happen, but you can draw more bad things to yourself based on reactions to current trauma - often through self-sabotage, pushing good people away through blame, etc. What you can do: Identify the self-sabotaging behaviors and decide to change what you can (Your reaction to trauma) Leave or change situations that cause harm to you Learn to find what you can do or take responsibility for when bad things “happen to you” Seek outside help to build emotional intelligence Spend time with empowerers and people who are like what you wish to become and cut out the energy vampires - even if they are blood relatives Prioritize yourself Talk about Mark Alexander and why this topic today: 2 year battle with cancer Never stopped pushing for his dream, to support those around him Gave 110% to every day - even days before his last day Making the most of your dash Could have given up but he lived every second he had Wanna honor Mark's memory? This episode is about the use of boarding education to support vulnerable children. Buttle UK have been funding grants to support children from disadvantaged backgrounds to attend boarding school for nearly 70 years. The idea might seem counter intuitive, particularly to those who have a particular image of what a boarding school is like. However, the outcomes for children are impressive. The GCSE results of the children Buttle UK supports are consistently above the national average, never mind those for comparative cohorts of vulnerable young people. So, how and why does it work? And, as we emerge from the pandemic, is there anything it can teach us about how to address the growing education gap between disadvantaged children and their more affluent peers?Joining writer, journalist and radio broadcaster Stig Abell is Julien Andre and Mark Alexander, previous students supported by Buttle UK, and Adam Williams, Head at Lord Wandsworth College, who have a long history of supporting these sort of bursary places.

I know very well what propaganda is; I know what thought control is and how to avoid it from having been taught in schools in the military. What we're seeing right now in the US during the COVID-19 pandemic is text-book thought control. The first thing you want to do to break someone down or control them is no. 1 create confusion and no. 2 instill fear...What do we have going on right now? Confusion; wear a mask, don't wear a mask...wear a mask, don't wear a mask. They don't know. Social distancing? We don't know; is it 6 feet, 12 feet, 18 feet? Ask anyone on the street right now; what does the CDC say about face masks? Nobody knows. Then they instill fear by putting people in unusual circumstances; what is more unusual than social distancing and mask-wearing? It is textbook mind control. Step back and ask, Is this about health? Or is somebody trying to control me?" - Keith Norris Get 15% off your CURED Nutrition order with the code WELLNESSFORCE ---> Get The Morning 21 System: A simple and powerful 21 minute system designed to give you more energy to let go of old weight and live life well. Why he decided to leave corporate America because of the bread and circuses it's creating to launch Paleo f(x) with his wife, Michelle Norris. His transition from the military to work for the corporate pharmaceutical industry with the mission to help people. The miserable emotions he and his wife were feeling living the "American Dream" to the point that they wondered if this dream was actually a lie. George Carlin on "the American Dream" The hunger he has always had inside to search for the truth in everything. Why we should pause, observe, and question whether or not what we're reading in the mass media news is true or false. Unpacking the reality we experience first hand and how we project that onto other people. [19:00] The War Inside Our Collective Consciousness Exploring the consciousness here in the 3D and where we actually are now in human history. The huge spike of people getting interested in plant medicine and psychedelics for deep-dive self-exploration and contemplation. His and Michelle's belief that the reason why everyone is all of a sudden interested in plant medicine is that the Universe is trying to wake up as many people as possible. The importance of getting curious and questioning what is happening around you especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. 353 Dr. Ben Lynch 345 Dr. Zach Bush The old paradigm that is dying as we begin to figure out what we want to create together and what we want to be rebirthed through Mother Earth. Breaking down the Bread and Circuses that we're experiencing today: A diet of entertainment or political policies on which the masses are fed to keep them happy and docile. Questioning whether the government lockdowns, CDC guidelines, and face masks are about health or if someone is trying to control us. [27:00] Taking Back Our Power From The 1% Why cutting our connection to Mother Earth and the further we go is actually disconnecting us from both ourselves and our brothers and sisters. The power of decentralization to ensure that fewer and fewer people with a motive are able to control our leaders. Why it's so important to talk to people in real life about what's going on instead of allowing the mass media to hijack your thoughts. The forced division of racism that is being driven in society to control people's thoughts, beliefs, and emotions. How racism was handled during his military career and the fact that you were out of the organization if you displayed any behavior of it. Why courage is grown over time and we need to begin to reach deep for the courage to question our own motives, what lense we are seeing things through, and our beliefs. How plant medicine and psychedelics help to put people in a situation where they feel safe and they can disassociate enough from a story to question it objectively. Why it is so hard for us to erase some things from the hard drive we developed between the time we were born and age 7. 213 Bonnie Kelly [38:00] The Monumental Changes To Come in 2020 Shawn Stevenson - The Model Health Show The fact that there are 60 million people just in the USA who don't have a job or are in massive financial stress due to COVID-19. Why thresholds of pain like what COVID-19 has brought us can actually lead to something beautiful even if we cannot see it now. The financial struggles Keith and Michelle faced in 2008 with the recession and housing crisis. Important choices they had to make moving forwards including whether they should go back to work for corporate America or hold true to the course they set for themselves in 2006 which eventually led to Paleo f(x). Other great entrepreneurial ventures that came from 2008 besides Paleo f(x) such as Airbnb. How humans are designed to be resilient and push forward to create great change for their lives in the face of adversity. What monumental changes he predicts will happen after 2020 that makes 2008 look like child's play. 086 Mark Divine Why the shared suffering we collectively experience will actually bring us closer to one another. [46:00] The Courage To Speak Your Truth Why the phrase, 'new normal,' has been hijacked by those in power as propaganda to control us. How to not get caught in the idea that 'Zoom' is now the only way to communicate and face masks are now a part of daily life as the 'new normal.' The criteria that the government has put out for large events such as Paleo f(x) and how they're planning to work around it including hosting mini-events all over the USA. Why collaboration is key because no one is going to make it out of the mess that COVID-19 has caused alone. How entrepreneurs are reaching out to one another to help during this difficult time. The fact that we don't grow just by sitting back and being comfortable; we grow when we are thrown into the fire and are challenged to change. Why those who are in control don't care how you react as long as you do react while they're playing not just one side of the story but all of the sides. [55:00] How To Know When To Fight Or Let Go The message he has received from plant medicine about when to know if it's time to fight for or to let go of something. How to listen to your intuition and innate intelligence to know where the truth and love are by sitting back, taking a breath, and not get caught up in the whirlwind around you. Why the emotion, anger (not irrational anger), can be a source of love if it's coming from a grounded, conscious, and centered place. The stage fright Keith has faced and how he has worked to overcome it on his own and with people such as Bo Eason to switch that sensation from fear to excitement. Bo Eason 275 Paul Chek How Keith and Michelle are moving forward with Paleo f(x) and the Wellness Tribe they've created from 2008. Why Paleo f(x) means so much more to them now than the house, cars, and their children's schools during their "American Dream" era. The fact that materialistic things just don't mean anything anymore compared to having loved ones in your life once you realize that you don't need a lot to be comfortable and happy. BREATHE M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Power Quotes From The Show The Universe Wants Us To Wake Up "About three or four years ago, Michelle and I noticed this exponential growth in people who wanted to find out about plant medicines and psychedelics. Not psychedelics for party use but for deep-dive self-exploration and contemplation. We truly believe that the universe is trying, right now, to wake up as many people as possible. It doesn't a whole lot of nudging to get people to get to the point of questioning and that is the biggest hurdle. Do I sit back and accept what I'm being told or do I question it? Does it make sense? Do I feel like I'm being played or lied to? Is there a narrative of control, who would want to control me, and why? Don't stop asking, 'Why?'" - Keith Norris Tuning Into Our Innate Intelligence "How do I know when to fight or to let things be? You will know from your own innate intelligence where truth and love are. Trust your innate intelligence but the only way you can do that is if you stand back, take a breath, and don't get caught up in the whirlwind around you. You have to be quiet and in a calm place to be able to listen eternally. If you get caught up in the fanfare of the bread and circuses, it's not going to happen." - Keith Norris How We Can Win Against Mind Control "Those who are looking to control you are looking for you to react. You are being spun and spun up to create a diversion and profit for someone else. Truly those in control don't care if you react in favor of one thing or the other because really they're playing both sides and all sides; they're going to win either way. The only way they don't win is if there is calm and no reaction. We have to step back and see what is actually happening with the face masks, COVID-19 lockdowns, and social distancing regulations." - Keith Norris Links From Today's Show 167 Michelle Norris Theory To Practice ID Life ARX Fit Efficient Exercise George Carlin on "the American Dream" 353 Dr. Ben Lynch 345 Dr. Zach Bush 213 Bonnie Kelly Shawn Stevenson - The Model Health Show 086 Mark Divine Bo Eason 275 Paul Chek Leave Wellness Force a review on iTunes BREATHE M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Keith Norris Facebook Instagram Twitter Paleo f(x) Facebook Instagram Twitter About Keith Norris Keith Norris is one of those few lucky souls who has been able to completely transition out of corporate America and dive headlong into his passion for bettering lives by teaching the art and science of physical culture. When assessing the long-term potential for trendy product concepts, Mark Alexander, the CEO of fast-growing skyr brand Icelandic Provisions, uses a “warm” analogy. “Paper fire burns really bright, and then it’s out before you know it,” Alexander said in an interview included in this episode. “A wood fire is going to last and burn for a while. That’s how we look at things: is this [trend] a paper fire or a wood fire?” Following a nearly 30-year career at the Campbell Soup Company, Alexander joined Icelandic Provisions in February 2019. A brand of traditional Icelandic skyr, Icelandic Provisions launched in 2016 and has tapped into growing demand for high-protein, low sugar cultured dairy. The company’s products, known for rich flavor and velvety texture, are sold in over 10,000 locations nationwide, including Whole Foods, Wegmans and ShopRite. As part of our conversation, Alexander spoke about his transition from Campbell to Icelandic Provisions, lessons and takeaways from working at a CPG conglomerate that he’s incorporated into his current role and how the skyr company navigates consumer demand for premium and affordable offerings. Show notes: 1:05: Elevators In Studios, Major Raises & Vegan Pork Rinds -- The episode’s hosts opened the show with a chat about BevNET’s Elevator Talk Livestream, which gave brand founders and CEOs and opportunity to be interviewed live via remote video and discuss new products and brand updates that they would have been featuring at Expo West 2020. They also spoke about recently completed funding rounds for sparkling water brand Spindrift and non-alcoholic beer company Athletic Brewing and munched on a new line of vegan pork rinds. 8:40: Mark Alexander, CEO, Icelandic Provisions -- In a call with Taste Radio editor Ray Latif, Alexander discussed his ambition to become the CEO of a company, the most rewarding and challenging aspects of working at a food conglomerate and what drew him to Icelandic Provisions. He also spoke about the steepest part of the learning curve in leading an entrepreneurial brand, why the industry is seeing greater numbers of big company CPG executives migrating to entrepreneurial brands, how hype affects emerging trends and how Icelandic Provisions responds to consumer backlash to added sugar. Brands in this episode: Icelandic Provisions, TeaRiot, Bobo’s, Sol-ti, Ayoba-Yo, Greenbelt Craft Kombucha, The Good Bean, Spindrift, Athletic Brewing Co., Beanfield’s, Snacklins, Clif Bar, Pepsi, Campbell’s

MultimediaLIVE — Bafana Bafana crashed the party in Egypt. Not only did they cause mass depression for the Africa Cup of Nations hosts but they created a storm in the Egyptian FA, which led to the resignation of their president Hany Abo Rida. Rida didn't go down alone. He fired the team's Mexican head coach Javier Aguirre and the rest of the Egypt technical staff, in an unprecedented mass sweep. There was heavy criticism for the reigning African Player-of-the-Year Mo Salah as well, in the aftermath. Some say it's all an P.R. and publicity stunt and that Rida will slot straight back to his position when the heat on him and the team has cooled. We don't know for sure. South Africa's 1-0 defeat of Egypt in the last 16 of Afcon was one of the shocks of this tournament – which has already seen an audacious Madagascar beat Nigeria in the pool stages and going on to knockout the DRC – but can it be billed as Bafana Bafana's greatest performance if coach Stuart Baxter's tenure? There was so much to unpack from one of the most glorious days in South African football history: from Baxter's tactics, to Bongani Zungu's role and "Mr Tucked In", Lebo Mothiba playing the most underrated role in the success of the team. And what's Baxter to do now that Themba Zwane is back to reclaim his place from the Bafana saviour, Thembinkosi Lorch? There's so much to go through. Was the abolishment of Section 21 evictions reasonable for both the landlords and the tenants? In today's episode of The Property Nomads, Rob meets with Mark Alexander, founder of ‘Property 118', to discuss the effects of preventing the use of Section 21 evictions on the future of the landlord's situation. Discover why Mark believes that the recent decision only favours the tenants and ignores the real reason why landlords use it. Mark discussed why economic circumstances should be considered when beginning to grow your property portfolio. With over 25 years' experience in the property industry, Mark has plenty of knowledge to share, covering the effect that recessions have on the market, Section 21, his opinion on recent issues in the property field and shares some great tips for entrepreneurs. Make sure you don't miss out by tuning in! Sign Up For MSOPI Here: https://bit.ly/msopi-nomad KEY TAKEAWAYS Before Mark Alexander entered property world, he was building his career in the fields of insurance and finance. It was there he met people who got him interested in investing in more properties. Having experienced the recession in the 90s, Mark doesn't want it to happen again, particularly to landlords. His experience shows that 2/3rds of business struggled to get finance, and the remaining 1/3rd managed to thrive with high cash reserves. Mark was able to grow his property portfolio by choosing to find the right properties in the goldmine area. Mark became the lead claimant in the UK's largest ever direct Class Action case which was won and created two pieces of Case Law and the Courts of Appeal. He does not believe that the eradication of Section 21 evictions was well-thought out as there were no alternatives presented to the landlords. If they're going to be less rental properties, where do the other people, who need it more, need to rent? Where will they live if there are no available properties? BEST MOMENTS "Successful investors are the ones that look at it as a business and look at it more of a marathon than a sprint, build their property portfolio and property business gradually, and learn the business from within it.” “There are two ways to learn. You can either learn from your own experiences, or you can learn from other people's experiences.” “If they had known (about the recession), they would've sold all their properties and sorted their market same as the other billionaires that did that.” “Plan for the worst and hope for the best is the best you can do in such uncharted territory.” “I think it's a stupid decision. You can't make a decision to do something without deciding what you're going to replace it with.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Property118 ABOUT THE GUEST Mark Alexander has been resident in Malta since Feb 2016 and have second homes in Russia and Florida. Continuing on with our miniseries of interviews with successful individuals within the property industry, Rob talks to Mark Smith, a barrister based at Cotswold Barristers, Cheltenham. As a tax expert, Mark, on behalf of 6,200 landlords, led a legal team responsible for recovering £27million of unlawfully charged mortgage interest from West Bromwich Building Society in 2016. In association with Property 118, he has been the guiding light behind robust strategies to allow rental businesses to incorporate without re-financing. Over a hundred businesses have successfully done so to date, thanks to Mark. In this special interview, Mark shares his advice for success, as well as his insights into the future of property investment, his opinions on how Brexit will influence the market, and how he began in the business. Sign Up For MSOPI Here: https://bit.ly/msopi-nomad KEY TAKEAWAYS Tax Planning, Tax Avoidance and Tax Evasion are different things: Tax Planning involves structuring a business in compliance with the law and HMRC practices. Tax Avoidance is a way of paying minimal to no tax using as many methods as possible to pay as little as possible. Tax Evasion is the non-payment of tax and is a criminal offence. Mark is often surprised at the lack of knowledge among property investors regarding tax laws and regulations that can be helpful or detrimental to their income. He puts this down to the commonly held belief that many coming into the property investment industry seem to feel that they are not actually running a business. Ideally, Mark would like to see this attitude to be corrected. Section 24 was designed to level the playing field between property investors and first-time buyers trying to get onto the property ladder. It only applies to people who pay self-assessment income tax on their property income. Mark has seen many paradigms shift during his thirty-four years in the industry. There was a reasonable amount of money around, and the “hobbyist” attitude toward property investment meant that there was not much in the way of regulation. When the credit crunch came, the investment market was taken a lot more seriously. If you enter into property investment with the view that you are the CEO of a significant business, that is the way that you will achieve success. When it comes to consulting a tax expert, Mark advises speaking to one as soon as possible once a decision has been made to enter the industry. Not only will it help you to understand the many regulations you need to adhere to, but it can also save you money and time. There may be a raft of measures your expert can help you with from the start. Property investment is hard work, and you are entitled to run it in the best and most efficient way possible so as to reap the maximum rewards from it. This is why it's definitely worth seeking professional help so as to best structure your tax plan. Mark does not advocate shady methods of avoiding tax but does suggest that there may be many legal avenues through which less tax can be paid, thereby increasing your benefits. On the back on Mark's famous case against the West Bromwich Building Society in 2016, he began to work with Property 118 in order to see to it that over two hundred businesses have been able to be incorporated, as well as advising on trust structures and partnership structures. So far, Mark's only experience of the “Brexit Effect” in terms of property has been a tailing off of interest from EU citizens wishing to invest, or even rent in Britain, which is completely understandable. Until the full terms and effects of Brexit are known, no definite plans or stability in the market can be assured. Mark's top tips for those interested, or for those already involved in property investment would be to plan properly. Make sure you have taken the time to get educated about what you're doing. Forums are a great place to learn from each other. Remember that you are the CEO of a significant business; be more robust in speaking to the paid professionals who work for you and tell them what you want to achieve. Always take the best advice that you can. You don't need to take a lot of advice, just take the best. BEST MOMENTS ‘I still love doing things that make a difference to somebody' ‘If you have five or six properties, you're suddenly at the head of a million-pound business. Property investors are seen as an easy target by the government' ‘If you take it seriously and organise yourself properly, then property investment can provide you with living expenses and a retirement plan as well' ‘You've got to think big and make your business scalable from day one' ‘A home is a basic thing that everybody aspires to, and if you don't own your own, then you want the next best thing' ‘Have confidence in what you're doing' VALUABLE RESOURCES Property 118 The Property Nomads Podcast mark@cotswoldbarristers.co.uk ABOUT THE GUEST Mark Smith is a well-known barrister within the private rented sector. The artist Humphrey Ocean is Professor of Perspective at the Royal Academy of Arts, and his portraits of Paul McCartney, Philip Larkin, Tony Benn and Lord Whitelaw are in the National Portrait Gallery. Dury was an important influence on Humphrey Ocean's student work, and they remained friends until Dury's death in 2000. For Only Artists, he meets the painter Mark Alexander. Mark attended art school as a mature student: before that, he had trained as a silversmith, before finding better paid work in factories, where he moved from job to job, becoming a charge hand and then a quality inspector in the aerospace industry. As a painter, his works include versions of Van Gogh's Dr Gachet, rendered entirely in shades of black, and portraits of Beethoven, following a residency at Beethoven's house in Bonn. This episode is brought to you by Bill DeSimone. Bill has appeared on the podcast twice and is one of my favourite personal trainers. Bill runs Optimal Exercise, a personal training studio based in central NJ, USA. Bill is incredibly knowledgeable about exercise, strength training, and in particular biomechanics and rehabilitation, and is the go-to guy for a lot of top HIT trainers like Dr Doug McGuff. Bill is the author of Congruent exercise: How To Make Weight Training Easier On Your Joints. I loved this book and finished it in a few days. I learnt how to select safe and effective exercises and gained a better understanding of how to construct productive workouts. It gave me much more insight into exactly how the joints and muscle operate specific exercises, and does so in a very elegant manner. To pick up your copy of Congruent Exercise, head on over to Amazon.com, where you can buy a copy in print or on Kindle. The Kindle version contains links to various videos where Bill demonstrates the exercises, which being a visual learner, I found this particularly helpful. Watch out for Bill’s next book: Joint-Friendly Fitness: Your Guide to the Optimal Exercise Program. Having seen a draft, I am very excited about this book and looking forward to talking to Bill to learn all about it. On today's episode, we pick the brain of IT band expert, Mark Alexander. Mark is the founder of BakPhysio, a Sports Physiotherapist with a background treating the Australian Olympic and Commonwealth Games Triathlon Teams, and a former lecturer/manager on the La Trobe University post-graduate Master of Sports Physiotherapy program. In this episode, we tackle: -Common misconceptions surrounding the IT band -Possible causal theories of IT Band Friction Syndrome and does the cause effect treatment -Intrinsic anatomical considerations and extrinsic effects on lateral knee pain -Mark's treatment approaches to lateral knee pain and "treat what you find" philosophy -And much more! We cover so much in this podcast and Mark helps dispels quite a few myths. The IT band is continuous with the entire circumferential fascia and it is not something you can target and lengthen. As Mark says, "you can have an impact on the myofascial attachments, but you're not releasing the IT band. If a scalpel can't do it, you can't do it." We also learn some new effective ways to evaluate and treat patients with lateral knee pain. Mark recommends finding the extrinsic cause through the patient history. Mark’s key question and realization: “Ask them what their activity level has been over the preceding 3-6 months. What? How long? Intensity? Think about a graph with force or load on the y axis and x axis is just time and plot over time what the load has been like. In 80-90% of patients there is a spike! 3 weeks earlier they started to really ramp it up…Their IT band cannot handle that spike and load.” Remember, every patient in front of you is unique! Understand the load and volume being put on their IT band and as ardently put by Mark, "treat what you find, challenge your assumptions, and compare to the other side." And for some guiding treatment principles, Mark suggests to, “Start with pyramidal foundation of stability and work up to strength.” Thank you for listening to the podcast! Mark Alexander became an accidental landlord in 1989, when interest rates were at 15% and everyone around him was going bust. Mark studied the people and businesses who thrived in those tough times, developed his own strategy by modelling them, and has now been a successful landlord for nearly 25 years. Oh, and he did it all while building up one of the UK's fastest growing businesses. Now, Mark runs Property118.com, which has 200,00 landlords and property professionals signed up to its mailing list. I found out Mark's story, and asked him from the main lessons he'd drawn from his own experiences and those of all the landlords he speaks to every day.
