Interview by Kris PetersThe world lost a true legend earlier this year, when vocalist/guitarist John Sykes - Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy, Tygers Of Pan Tang - lost his battle with cancer. While his legacy endures thanks to the music he created, the world has still lost a musical innovator and pioneer with a gift for writing timeless music.Around eight years ago, Sykes entered into a contract with then-fledgling music label Golden Robot Records, agreeing to terms for a new album to be released through the company. But over the ensuing few years and as life and circumstances got in the way, all that was honoured by Sykes in that contract was four songs, written by him with a view to completing a full album down the track, that have until now remained locked away from the world in their original demo state.Since Sykes' passing, the label has gone to the vault and dusted off the cobwebs and had them professionally remixed and remastered by Aussie legendary producer Paul Gommersall (Paul Weller, George Michael, GNR).Paying respect to the music and legacy of John Sykes, Golden Robot decided to allow the music world at least six months to grieve the loss of Sykes before announcing their intentions to release the four songs - the first new music from Sykes in a quarter of a century - as a four-track EP.It was a decision taken with much respect to the situation, the man, and his music, but ultimately one which Golden Robot Records believes serves the best interests of fans and enables them to release material which was to form the nucleus of a full body of work.Golden Robot Global Entertainment's Mark Alexander-Erber sat down with HEAVY to talk us through the release and the history behind four tracks, which could well be the final recording the world hears from a man who has shaped so much of its history."John was introduced to me during the formative days of Golden Robot Records' journey in Los Angeles," Mark explained. "The label officially launched around 2015, and by 2017 we had entered into an agreement with John for a full-length studio album. The original contract was straightforward — John was to deliver a minimum of ten tracks for a complete album.""As per the terms of the agreement, we made an initial payment to John, and everything was progressing well. John preferred to work at his own creative pace, which we respected. The understanding was that upon delivery of additional material, a second tranche of payment would be made. However, as time went on, it became clear that what we had originally paid for and what was ultimately being delivered were two very different things.""That said, we approached the situation the way we always have at Golden Robot — through open communication and a commitment to the relationship. Like many bands we worked with in those early years, it was never just about rigid contractual enforcement; it was about navigating challenges together in good faith.""In the end, what we received were four absolutely outstanding demos — powerful, compelling tracks that truly reflect John's immense talent and artistic voice. While it wasn't the full album we initially set out to produce, those recordings have tremendous value, and we're proud to be the ones bringing them to the world."In the full interview, Mark provided detailed insights into his professional relationship with John Sykes, which commenced in 2017. He acknowledged that while not all contractual obligations were fulfilled to the letter, all parties involved reached mutual compromises in good faith. Mark expressed sincere appreciation for their personal and professional relationship, noting the importance of approaching sensitive matters with discretion and respect.The discussion also included specifics regarding the forthcoming 4-track EP, which will feature two previously unreleased songs along with remastered versions of two existing tracks. Mark confirmed that the estate of the late artist will receive the royalties as stipulated under the terms of the agreement.He conveyed confidence in the artistic and technical quality of the recordings, stating that the work pays a respectful and authentic tribute to John's legacy. "It basically started because my son was on Australia's Got Talent - he was about nine at the time, he's 21 now - and he nearly won the show. We were signing some great bands in the States and Europe. (but) this is a different year for us. We've had the hits and misses over the years. We've had some things that have gone to number one. We've had some things that have been a disaster, but that's the business. The good thing about being an Aussie and working in the global world is if you make a mistake, you can apologise and fix it and get on with it. If you're doing something well, we'll celebrate it with you. It served its purpose, and it served us well, and we've worked with some great bands. We've got global distribution through physical and digital - and we've just changed recently to an even better set up - great PR, great marketing people. My team today is the best it's ever been. We've had a few changes over the last six months, and I've got a really good team that just gets on with it. We're just in it for the music and to get the word out about Aussie music across the world. The collaboration is expected to generate half a million euro (500,000) for Data Edge in additional revenue over the next two years. Atelier in een treinwagon Op zoek naar een atelier vond zilversmid Mark Alexander (1989) een oud treinstel, waarin hij een echte werkplaats bouwde. Het is niet groot, maar hij heeft alles bij de hand. En anders zet hij een boomstronk met een aambeeld buiten neer en smeed hij daar verder. Mark richtte zijn atelier in met gereedschappen die hij vond of zelf maakte. Een belangrijk onderdeel zijn de hamers en staken die hij kreeg van zilversmid Jan van Nouhuys, toen die stopte met smeden. Dankzij de masterclasses van Van Nouhuys ging Mark verder in het vak. Jan verwees Hester Wandel naar Mark, beiden kregen les van hem. Ze bezoekt Mark in de treinwagon op een terrein tussen twee sporen. Daar ziet ze zelfs gereedschap dat ze nog kent uit de Zaanstreek: een bankschroef van de Artillerie Inrichtingen. Die waren van zo'n goede makelij, dat ze nog altijd worden gebruikt. Maar ze is vooral onder de indruk van het prachtige werk dat Mark van zilver weet te maken. Dat harde materiaal lijkt wel papier, zo verfijnd als het is. In September 1997, 40-year-old Mark Alexander was scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder, but the anesthesiologist left him in the hands of an inexperienced nurse anesthetist, who failed to provide Mark with adequate ventilation during the surgery and neglected to record Mark's heart rate for 17 minutes. This episode is about the use of boarding education to support vulnerable children.  Buttle UK have been funding grants to support children from disadvantaged backgrounds to attend boarding school for nearly 70 years. The idea might seem counter intuitive, particularly to those who have a particular image of what a boarding school is like. However, the outcomes for children are impressive.  The GCSE results of the children Buttle UK supports are consistently above the national average, never mind those for comparative cohorts of vulnerable young people.So, how and why does it work? And, as we emerge from the pandemic, is there anything it can teach us about how to address the  growing education gap between disadvantaged children and their more affluent peers?Joining writer, journalist and radio broadcaster Stig Abell is Julien Andre and Mark Alexander, previous students supported by Buttle UK, and Adam Williams, Head at Lord Wandsworth College, who have a long history of supporting these sort of bursary places.

It was there he met people who got him interested in investing in more properties.  Having experienced the recession in the 90s, Mark doesn't want it to happen again, particularly to landlords. His experience shows that 2/3rds of business struggled to get finance, and the remaining 1/3rd managed to thrive with high cash reserves.  Mark was able to grow his property portfolio by choosing to find the right properties in the goldmine area. Mark became the lead claimant in the UK's largest ever direct Class Action case which was won and created two pieces of Case Law and the Courts of Appeal. He does not believe that the eradication of Section 21 evictions was well-thought out as there were no alternatives presented to the landlords. As a tax expert, Mark, on behalf of 6,200 landlords, led a legal team responsible for recovering £27million of unlawfully charged mortgage interest from West Bromwich Building Society in 2016. In association with Property 118, he has been the guiding light behind robust strategies to allow rental businesses to incorporate without re-financing. Over a hundred businesses have successfully done so to date, thanks to Mark. In this special interview, Mark shares his advice for success, as well as his insights into the future of property investment, his opinions on how Brexit will influence the market, and how he began in the business. Tax Avoidance is a way of paying minimal to no tax using as many methods as possible to pay as little as possible. Tax Evasion is the non-payment of tax and is a criminal offence. Mark is often surprised at the lack of knowledge among property investors regarding tax laws and regulations that can be helpful or detrimental to their income. He puts this down to the commonly held belief that many coming into the property investment industry seem to feel that they are not actually running a business. Ideally, Mark would like to see this attitude to be corrected. Section 24 was designed to level the playing field between property investors and first-time buyers trying to get onto the property ladder. It only applies to people who pay self-assessment income tax on their property income. Mark has seen many paradigms shift during his thirty-four years in the industry. There was a reasonable amount of money around, and the “hobbyist” attitude toward property investment meant that there was not much in the way of regulation. When the credit crunch came, the investment market was taken a lot more seriously. If you enter into property investment with the view that you are the CEO of a significant business, that is the way that you will achieve success. When it comes to consulting a tax expert, Mark advises speaking to one as soon as possible once a decision has been made to enter the industry. Not only will it help you to understand the many regulations you need to adhere to, but it can also save you money and time. There may be a raft of measures your expert can help you with from the start. Property investment is hard work, and you are entitled to run it in the best and most efficient way possible so as to reap the maximum rewards from it. This is why it's definitely worth seeking professional help so as to best structure your tax plan. Mark does not advocate shady methods of avoiding tax but does suggest that there may be many legal avenues through which less tax can be paid, thereby increasing your benefits. On the back on Mark's famous case against the West Bromwich Building Society in 2016, he began to work with Property 118 in order to see to it that over two hundred businesses have been able to be incorporated, as well as advising on trust structures and partnership structures. So far, Mark's only experience of the “Brexit Effect” in terms of property has been a tailing off of interest from EU citizens wishing to invest, or even rent in Britain, which is completely understandable. Until the full terms and effects of Brexit are known, no definite plans or stability in the market can be assured. Mark's top tips for those interested, or for those already involved in property investment would be to plan properly. Make sure you have taken the time to get educated about what you're doing. Forums are a great place to learn from each other. Remember that you are the CEO of a significant business; be more robust in speaking to the paid professionals who work for you and tell them what you want to achieve. Always take the best advice that you can.
