My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Mark Steven Porro, author of the book A Cup of Tea on the Commode. Mark Steven Porro, a New Jersey native (Exit 163), earned an Industrial Design degree from The Ohio State University. After years of agency work, his love of acting led him to Hollywood, where he appeared in dozens of television, film, and stage productions. Mark also spent his twenty-eight years in Tinseltown, entrepreneuring. He started five non-profit companies. But hold the applause, none were intended to be. He now lives in the South of France. But hold your pity. He of sound mind and body chose to suffer in the heart of wine country where the locals insist his French isn't so bad—at least that's what he thinks they're saying.   Mark is an award-winning designer, writer, director, and now a best-selling, award-winning author. He has written lots of jokes, several screenplays, and one award-winning short film. A Cup of Tea on the Commode—a sad, sweet, and funny debut memoir—chronicles his multitasking adventures of filling his mother's last years with love, laughter, and joy. Though not always successful, he came pretty damn close.   In my book review, I stated A Cup of Tea on the Commode is a memoir about his time as a caregiver for his ailing mother. Porro takes readers on a real-life journey complete with personal childhood memories, funny anecdotes, and poignant details about his time as a caregiver.   What I loved most is Porro's honesty. Being a caregiver is difficult. As a caregiver, he did his best but sometimes, his best and his family's best, led to not-so-great outcomes. Yet, overall, caring for his mom was something he wouldn't have wanted to miss because it gave him precious time with someone he loved dearly.   As a caregiver, I related completely. However, this book will touch more than caregivers. It will resonate with anyone who has a relationship with a parent - good or difficult - and provide the reader with new ways to look at aging.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Mark Steven Porro Website: https://acupofteaonthecommode.org FB: @teaonthe IG: @ a_cup_of_tea_on_the_commode X: @ teaonthe LinkedIn: @Mark Porro   Purchase A Cup of Tea on the Commode on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/4e3TwJt Ebook: https://amzn.to/3A5kEdm   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   #markstevenporro #acupofteaonthecommode #memoir #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

When Life Takes an Unexpected Turn: Embracing the Role of Caregiver   Imagine receiving a call that would turn your world upside down. For Mark Steven Porro, a carefree bachelor living in Los Angeles, that call came from his brother in New Jersey. Their mother was on her deathbed. Dropping everything, Mark flew home, not knowing that this trip would change his life forever. In the latest episode of ‘Bump in the Road,' we hear Mark's incredible story of transformation from an actor and entrepreneur to a devoted son and caregiver. His mother, once in a semi-comatose state, miraculously recovered after a rogue hospice nurse broke protocol, leading to Mark's decision to move back into his childhood home and assume full-time care for his mother. Care often came down to the little things:   “One of the first things I did…She had these old drab day dresses and stuff like that. And I said, I don't want my mom looking like an old lady. So I bought her a new wardrobe. And that cheered her up immensely.”   Mark's narrative is not just a story of caregiving; it's a journey of personal growth, humor, and empathy. He shares the challenges of changing diapers, learning to provide medical care, and even renovating the family home to make it more comfortable for his mother. Through it all, Mark maintains a sense of humor and a deep love for his mother, which he expresses in poignant, often hilarious anecdotes. The episode is a heartfelt exploration of what it means to care for someone at the end of their life. Mark's story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the profound impact we can have on each other's lives. It's a narrative that will make you laugh, cry, and reflect on the power of love and family.     What they're saying:   “This is a beautiful book about life, its imperfections, its challenges, and its joys. It is a book of hope and wisdom for all of us facing a bump in the road.” –Pragito Dove   “Pat has woven together beautiful stories of life setbacks that have been transformed into spiritual growth. Now he's celebrating the release of his book "A Cup of Tea on the Commode," his journey of ups and downs and learning the details of caring 24/7 for his adoring mother. The book is full of hysterical stories of the six siblings growing up on a cult-de-sac in the suburban town of Ridgewood, NJ.Becoming a first time parent as his mother's caregiver, Mark had many ups and downs but he knew that the most important thing was that his mother was taken care of with respect and love. He had to make sure that his mother trusted him and that she understood that he would always be respectful and have her best interests at heart.  A Cup of Tea on the Commode Social Media links:https://acupofteaonthecommode.orghttps://www.facebook.com/teaonthehttps://twitter.com/teaonthehttps://www.instagram.com/a_cup_of_tea_on_the_commodehttps://www.youtube.com/@acupofteaonthecommodehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/markporrohttps://www.tumblr.com/acupofteaonthecommodehttps://www.pinterest.fr/acupofteaonthecommodehttps://www.tiktok.com/@markstevenporro

We all go about our lives knowing that time will catch up with us, but it never ceases to surprise when we get the call that an aging loved one suddenly needs more help than they can afford. What can you do? What's should you do? Let's learn one option right now. Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts. My guest today is Mark Steven Porro. Mark comes from an interesting background of acting and business management, but what he brings to the show today is actually his experience being a caregiver, and why he believes it's something everyone should do when the opportunity arises in your own family. His is both a fun and sad story about the many struggles of an aging loved one, and the time he got to spend with his mother, even when she couldn't remember his name. If you enjoy the documentary style, at the dining table type of story; you'll probably love this. Also, thank you for everyone who tuned in to the last episode and celebrated the two year milestone with me. I hope you enjoyed the look back, as well as a look forward to all the things still to come! Let's give a hand! It was a very different style than we usually do for the show, but I like to shake things up sometimes so you all don't get totally bored of me. We're now into October, and here's the rankings so far: 1. The United States, led by Washington, Arizona, and Pennsylvania. Odd three states to be in the lead, but I like it! 2. The United Kingdom, with England just barely beating Northern Ireland. 3. Bulgaria. Welcome to the top 3! I fear I don't know enough about Bulgaria to pull off an inside reference. Share some things with me! 4. Canada, with an unusual tie between Alberta and British Columbia. Glad to see a different name up here for the first time in a long time. 5. Nepal. Welcome to the top 5! I'd be fascinated to hear how you found the show! That's it for this week! Have a great weekend I'll see you all back here for the next episode! Until the next episode, please do all the things to help the show: rate, review, like, and subscribe.  Reach out to DumbEnoughPodcast@Gmail.Com or on any social media if you want to reach me personally. A Cup of Tea on the Commode: My Multi-Tasking Adventures of Caring for Mom. And How I Survived to Tell the Tale by Mark Steven Porro https://amzn.to/3RgU1rN Mark enjoyed his carefree bachelor's life in Los Angeles. He had no steady girlfriend, no children, few responsibilities outside of work. But that all changed when “The Call” came. Genevieve, his eighty-nine-year-old mother, was on her deathbed. He rushed back to New Jersey to be by her side. Hours became days, days became weeks, then she woke up. So, he moved back into his childhood home and took over her care. His first task was to remove all hazards, which included the current caregivers. After, Mark asked his mother, “Do you trust me?” She whispered, “Yes.” “Do you understand I will do everything in my power to keep you healthy and safe?” She smiled and nodded. “That means I'm in charge, and that means now you must obey me.” Her mood shifted in an instant. She looked him dead in the eye, then puckered up her lips. He wasn't sure if this was a sign of surrender or one wishing him luck. He kissed her and hoped for the best. The parent/child role reversal may not have been unique to Mark, but how he dealt with it was. One day, hoping to make Genevieve's time on the commode a tad more pleasant, he offered her a cup of her favorite beverage. It was a hit, and a cup of tea on the commode became a staple on the morning menu, and the clear choice for the title of this intimate, funny, and heartwarming memoir of how eldercare can be done. A Cup of Tea on the Commode chronicles Mark's multitasking adventures of filling his mother's last years with love, laughter, and joy. Though not always successful, he came pretty damn close.About the Author “This author weaves his stories together, employing a wickedly humorous skill not unlike that of David Sedaris and Augusten Burroughs” Mark Steven Porro, a New Jersey native (Exit 163), holds an Industrial Design degree from The Ohio State University. After years of agency work, his love of acting led him to Hollywood, where he appeared in dozens of television, film, and theatre productions. Mark also spent his twenty-eight years in Hollywood, entrepreneuring. He started five non-profit companies. But hold the applause, none were intended to be. He now lives in the South of France. But hold your pity. He of sound mind and body chose to suffer in the heart of wine country where the locals insist his French isn't so bad—at least that's what he thinks they're saying. Mark is an award-winning designer, writer, and director. He has written lots of jokes, several screenplays, and one award-winning short film. A Cup of Tea on the Commode—a sad, sweet, and funny memoir—chronicles his adventures of filling his mother's last years with love, laughter, and joy. Though not always successful, he came pretty damn close. And he survived to tell the tale.

Adam David Morton, Professor of Political Economy in the Discipline of Political Economy at the University of Sydney, talks with Mark Steven about his new book, Class War: A Literary History. This book is a thrilling and vivid work of history, Class War weaves together literature and politics to chart the making and unmaking of social class through revolutionary combat. In a narrative that spans the globe and more than two centuries of history, Mark Steven traces the history of class war from the Haitian Revolution to Black Lives Matter. Surveying the literature of revolution, from the poetry of Shelley and Byron to the novels of Émile Zola and Jack London, exploring the writings of Frantz Fanon, Che Guevara, and Assata Shakur, Class War reveals the interplay between military action and the politics of class, showing how solidarity flourishes in times of conflict. Written with verve and ranging across diverse historical settings, Class War traverses industrial battles, guerrilla insurgencies, and anticolonial resistance, as well as large-scale combat operations waged against capitalism's regimes and its interstate system. In our age of economic crisis, ecological catastrophe, and planetary unrest, Steven tells the stories of those whose actions will help guide future militants toward a revolutionary horizon. Mark Steven is Senior Lecturer in Twentieth- and Twenty-first Century Literature at the University of Exeter, UK. He is the author of Red Modernism: American Poetry and the Spirit of Communism (2017) and Splatter Capital (2017). This interview is a part of the 2023 Festival of Urbanism Book Club Podcast series

The life of an artist, the importance of craft, the need to find a way to support their passion and the delicate balance of making a living and staying true to one's artistic integrity.
