Episode 273."Rocketman"Composer.Matthew Margeson.Matthew Margeson is a composer of film, television, and video game music best known for his diverse action and adventure film work that bridges orchestral and electronic music. He got his start as an assistant to composers on video games and film shorts, and worked as a technical score advisor, arranger, and synth programmer, among other roles, for Hans Zimmer's Remote Control Productions. His first main composer credits in film arrived in 2010 with Lunatics, Lovers & Poets and Burning Palms. A year later, Margeson scored the animated TV series Transformers Prime and the video game Carnival Island. In the meantime, his additional music for other composers could be heard in blockbusters such as X-Men: First Class and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. In 2013, Margeson co-wrote the score for the franchise sequel Kick-Ass 2 with Henry Jackman. It incorporated rock elements into a symphonic base. That led to more action films, such as 2014's Kingsman: The Secret Service, also with Jackman. His work in other genres around that time included the 2016 biopic Eddie the Eagle and Tim Burton's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (with Michael Higham). He and Jackman teamed up again for 2017's Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and Margeson received sole credit for his music to the 2018 horror film Truth or Dare. The King's Man score is co-composed by Matthew Margerson and Dominic Lewis and can be heard in theaters now! Please Welcome, Matthew Margeson.Instagram: Monday Morning Critic Podcast.Facebook: Monday Morning Critic Podcast.Twitter:  @mdmcriticwww.mmcpodcast.comMondaymorningcritic@gmail.com

Matthew Margeson And Dominic Lewis are taking their friendship to the next level and are working side by side to co-compose The King's Man from director Matthew Vaughn. You've seen them on All Access before, but now we're diving into their latest collaboration together. Matt and Dom discuss how they met working for composer Henry Jackman early in their careers at Remote Control Productions. We talk about late night coffee chats at 3am, and how the two always wanted to co-compose a film together. Matt and Dom then take us into the world of Matthew Vaughn's Kingsmen films, and how the two of them came onboard together to work on The King's Man. Hear about the approach of how this new film gave them the opportunity to really start fresh and not feel obligated to reference the other two films given that it's not connected by timeline or characters. We end the interview by playing a little "Newlyweds" Co-Composer Edition! Matt and Dom are put to the test and see how much do they truly know about each other! My guest today is Jason Soudah a Composer/Singer-Songwriter/Producer/Mix Engineer from the UK, and has been based in Los Angeles since 2009, when he was invited to intern at Hans Zimmer’s studio complex.  Jason was quickly recruited by composer Matthew Margeson (Rocketman, Kingsman: The Secret Service & The Golden Circle, Rings), and they have been collaborating ever since.   In this “additional music” capacity, Jason has also worked with composers Henry Jackman, Dominic Lewis, Heitor Pereira, Jim Dooley, Al Clay, Daniel Heath, Benjamin Wallfisch, and Ryan Taubert, among many.  As a composer Jason recently won the Best Music Award at the 2019 Boston Film Festival for his score to the movie "Whaling," as well as scoring the multi-award winning Horror Feature "FOLLOWED", and the Emmy-Awarded Documentary Feature “Paradise Reef: The World Is Watching.”   Jason has had songs featured on MTV (The Real World, Teen Mom…). He wrote “A Sporting Chance” for the movie “Eddie The Eagle,” “Ladyphones” for the movie “GI-JOE: Retaliation,” and co-wrote “Handy Candy” for the movie “Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children” with composers Matthew Margeson and Mike Higham.  Right now, Jason is writing music for multiple film projects, mixing scores (most recently for BAFTA-supported composer Emily Rice), and collaborating with other songwriters and artists (as a co-writer and/or producer) with a view to creating songs for synch licenses, for the artist/s themselves, or to be cut by other artists.  Jason also produces backing tracks for KIDZ BOP, collaborating with Gary Philips. Composer Matthew Margeson has been behind some of the most stylistic and bold scores in recent memory. His work on films such as Kick-Ass 2, the Kingsman franchise, Eddie The Eagle, Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, and now Rocketman has showcased his versatility across many genres. Matt joins us for his second All Access, this time to dive into the amazing world of the Elton John biopic, Rocketman. Matt reunites with Eddie The Eagle director, Dexter Fletcher for this wondrous yet dramatically heavy exploration of the highs and lows of Elton John’s life as he exploded into one of the biggest musical artists of all time. Learn how Matt worked alongside renowned producer Giles Martin (son of George Martin) to help blur the lines between song and score. While Giles Martin and his team were responsible for reimagining Elton John’s classic songs, Matt worked alongside to write a score that created a seamless musical narrative. Matt also shares how he worked closely with director Dexter Fletcher to find the right tone and approach for Rocketman and how to support the creative vision of the film. We explore other topics such as what Matt learned early in his career working for composers such as Henry Jackman and Hans Zimmer, and what fuels his inspiration for writing music today. [Watch the video interview on our YouTube Channel] On this All Access, we sit down with the wonderfully talented Matthew Margeson. We discuss Matthew's background and how a series of events including his love for musical theater led him to pursue music as a career. After college he finally made the leap to become a film composer by moving to Los Angeles with nothing but $500 in his pocket. Hear Matthew talk about his early days of being an assistant to Klaus Badelt and doing additional music for composers like James Dooley and Henry Jackman. Hear about all the mistakes he made on Skyline, one of his big first solo credits, and how he learned from those mistakes. Matthew talks about all the fundamentals he learned in his early days that he then applied to his own work as a composer whether it was on solo projects like Eddie The Eagle or co-composed projects like Kick-Ass 2, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and the Kingsman films. We discuss working with different directors such as Matthew Vaughn and Tim Burton, and how each director works with composers. We also delve into Matthew's process as he shares how he approaches projects from the start. Whether it's scoring a wacky TV comedy like Wrecked, following in Hans Zimmer's footsteps for Rings, or arranging Stephen Sondheim's classic music for Disney's adaptation of Into The Woods, we cover it all. Matthew has accomplished some amazing feats very early on in his career and it was a great pleasure to have him as a guest on this All Access!
