This week, MJ is bringing back one of her favourite conversations with the upcoming Academy awards in LA anf the annual Elton John Academy Awards viewing party raising money for AIDS (as funding is being slashed everywhere by the current administration). This conversation also brings hope and collective care during a truly divisive time. David Furnish and MJ met over 40 years ago as teenagers, relegated to the back court of their local tennis club because they just weren't cool enough for prime time. Connecting as the ultimate outsiders, they went on to change the club's culture, embracing their trailblazing spirit and finding the confidence and conviction that only a soul connecting friendship provides. Fully embracing their 14-year old selves, listen as they talk about loving the rebel within, David's entrepreneurial skills from launching the pool snack bar to a much larger business, Rocket Entertainment. Let's not forget the game changing work he has been doing for over 30 years with the Elton John AIDS Foundation, the global charity he runs so passionately with his much adored husband, Elton John. Today is Tuesday, January 16th and Happy 43rd Birthday to MLB future HOF Albert Pujols. *** 01.16.24 – BIRTHDAY – ALBERT PUJOLS*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Elton John auctioning art from Atlanta home via Christie's starting Feb. 21 Education Department error could lower U.S. students' financial aid amounts Metro Atlanta will get up to 400 new electric vehicle charging ports All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Elton John auctioning art from Atlanta home via Christie's Elton John is set to auction part of his extensive art collection from his recently sold Atlanta home. The auction, beginning on February 21 at Christie's, is expected to generate at least $10 million. John, who recently retired from performing, sold his Buckhead condo last fall for $7,225,000. The items for auction include a custom Damien Hirst, an 18th-century costume by Sandy Powell, and silver leather boots with E and J embossed. The decision to sell is emotional for John, who, along with husband David Furnish, is culling the collection. The auctions will be held both live and online, showcasing different aspects of John's life and collection. A public exhibition in New York City will precede the auctions from February 9 to 21, featuring a pop-up gift shop with John's merchandise. STORY 2: Education Department error could lower U.S. students' financial aid amounts An error by the U.S. Education Department in calculating financial aid could result in lower subsidies for students. The mistake involves not updating a key part of its aid calculation index for inflation, which has risen approximately 20% since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. This affects the amount of a family's income that is "protected" in the adjusted gross income calculation, which determines a student's financial aid need. Unless this is corrected, families may appear to have more resources than they do, leading to less financial aid for students. The issue was first reported in late 2021 and the department is currently determining how to address it. STORY 3: Metro Atlanta will get up to 400 new electric vehicle charging ports The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) has received a $6.1 million federal grant to install 300 to 400 electric vehicle (EV) charging ports across 20 counties in metro Atlanta, particularly in areas where such infrastructure is currently limited. The move comes as part of efforts to prepare for the upcoming EV revolution and ensure equitable access to charging facilities. Charging at these new stations will be free. The grant is part of a wider $622.6 million fund allocated by the U.S. Department of Transportation under the bipartisan infrastructure law for nationwide charger installations. The first chargers under this program are expected to be operational in 12 to 18 months. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: ESOG – GCPS STORY 4: Shipping containers will soon house struggling Atlantans A new affordable housing complex in downtown Atlanta, constructed from repurposed shipping containers, is nearing completion at 184 Forsyth Street. Donated by the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Department, these containers were initially used as patient overflow facilities during the COVID-19 surge in Macon. The 40-unit community, built in just 60 days at a cost of $125,000 per unit, aims to address homelessness and connect vulnerable populations with resources. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens praised the project as an innovative solution for rapid-affordable housing. The Forsyth Street site will offer permanent housing and wrap-around services, with residents expected to move in next month. The mayor plans to expand similar shipping container communities across the city to combat homelessness. STORY 5: Estate of now-infamous Murdaugh family goes up for action The South Carolina estate of the notorious Murdaugh family, known as the Moselle Estate, is going up for auction with a minimum bid of $1.1 million. Alex Murdaugh, the former resident, was convicted of murdering his wife and son in 2021 and is currently appealing his sentence. The property has changed hands several times since the crime. Proceeds from the initial sale went toward legal fees, the surviving son, a local bank, and victims of a 2019 boat crash linked to the family. The estate, which features a mix of classic charm and modern amenities, includes a 5,300-square-foot home on 21 acres. The auction will take place on February 15. We'll be back in a moment. Break: DRAKE – INGLES 3 STORY 6: This half-eaten sandwich is up for sale for $1.3M on Facebook On Facebook Marketplace, a half-eaten sandwich is making waves with a staggering $1.3 million price tag. Listed as "new" by a cheeky seller from Leicester, England, the grilled sandwich, described as "very crispy," is up for sale because the vendor couldn't finish it. This quirky listing follows a trend of bizarre food items being sold on the platform, such as a man offering "the saddest lunch ever" – a baked potato drowning in baked beans, eaten off a glass microwave plate. The eccentricity of these listings has sparked amusement and commentary on social media. STORY 7: Michigan coronation is most-watched title game in four years The Michigan-Washington College Football Playoff National Championship game marked a four-year high in ratings and viewership. Averaging a 12.3 rating and 25.05 million viewers across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and ESPN Deportes, the game saw a 41% increase in ratings and a 45% increase in viewership compared to the previous year. Michigan's victory delivered the second-largest audience of the college football season and ranked fourth in viewership among all non-NFL sportscasts since 2018. The full College Football Playoff averaged 23.6 million viewers, up 15% from the previous year, and marked the highest average since the 2017-18 season. The entire 43-game bowl season averaged a 2.3 rating and 4.48 million viewers, showcasing a 5% increase in viewership over the previous year. The estate, which features a mix of classic charm and modern amenities, includes a 5,300-square-foot home on 21 acres. The auction will take place on February 15. We'll be back in a moment. Break 3: ESOG – INGLES 5 STORY 6: This half-eaten sandwich is up for sale for $1.3M on Facebook On Facebook Marketplace, a half-eaten sandwich is making waves with a staggering $1.3 million price tag. We'll have final thoughts after this. CTL Script/ Top Stories of January 16th Publish Date: January 15th Henssler :15 From the Ingles Studio Welcome to the Award-Winning Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast Today is Tuesday, January 16th and Happy 43rd Birthday to future MLB HOF Albert Pujols. ***01.16.24 – BIRTHDAY – ALBERT PUJOLS*** I'm Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cherokee is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Elton John auctioning art from Atlanta home via Christie's starting Feb. 21 Education Department error could lower U.S. students' financial aid amounts Metro Atlanta will get up to 400 new electric vehicle charging ports Plus, Bruce Jenkins sits down with Leah McGrath to discuss veganism for weight loss. We'll have all this and more coming up on the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger Podcast, and if you're looking for Community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! Commercial: CU of GA STORY 1: Elton John auctioning art from Atlanta home via Christie's Elton John is set to auction part of his extensive art collection from his recently sold Atlanta home. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. Dennis is joined via Zoom by Mark S. King for Part 2 of their conversation about Mark's new book My Fabulous Disease as well as his previous memoir A Place Like This. In Part 2, Mark talks about building massive box kites with his father, how his father encouraged risk-taking in life and how surviving the AIDS crisis prepared him to deal with his father's passing. Mark also talks about one of his most widely-read columns; about the popular 2004 bareback porn film Dawson's 20-Load Weekend and what it said about gay culture at that time. He also talks about the column where he imagined going shopping for socks with the legendarily confrontational writer and activist Larry Kramer and then hearing from Kramer himself. Other topics include: meeting and marrying his husband Michael, being settled, monogamous and 'right-sized,' the strangest place he's ever been recognized and the thrill of having Elton John and David Furnish sing him Happy Birthday...in harmony, no less. www.myfabulousdisease.com

David Furnish and MJ met over 40 years as teenagers, relegated to the back court of their local tennis club because they just weren't cool enough for prime time. Connecting as the ultimate outsiders they went on to change the club's culture, embracing their trailblazing spirit and finding the confidence and conviction that only a soul connecting friendship can provide. Fully embracing their 14 year old selves, listen as they talk about loving the rebel within, David's entrepreneurial skills prior to running Rocket Entertainment ( he killed it with the pool snack bar ), and the game changing work he has been doing for over 30 years with the Elton John AIDS Foundation, the global charity he runs so passionately with his much adored husband, Elton John.
Sky News' political editor Beth Rigby analyses the week's big stories - including the pressure piling on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to get inflation under control. And speaks to filmmaker and chair of the Elton John AIDS foundation, David Furnish, about the work the foundation is doing in Ukraine, and the irony of Russian President, Vladimir Putin being an Elton John fan. Email Beth Rigby with your thoughts on the week's stories at bethrigbypodcast@sky.uk.
This week I go on a sartorial journey with Canadian film maker David Furnish. David is CEO of Rocket Entertainment Group and Chairman of the Elton John AIDS Foundation which has raised a staggering $600 million to dateto support programs in 55 countries around the globe through prevention and education, elimination of prejudice and discrimination, and providing services to people living with the disease. Of course we talk about shopping …and how he and Elton sometimes use the process as a reward for hard work, not to mention the benefit of how beautiful things are mood altering and make you feel good about yourself. We chat about how cathartic it is to have a good clear-out in the spirit of both circularity and fund raising for a great cause…in the process giving someone else the opportunity to enjoy those pieces – bravo to that – I have been doing the same myself and it is so rewarding to see something gorgeous head off to a new home to make new memories and be valued all over again. David is wonderfully generous about sharing insights into the glamorous life he shares with his husband Elton… His “Pretty Woman” moment in Paris…dressing up for legendary parties from Elton's 50th to White Tie and Tiaras and so much more… He clearly loves fashion and appreciates the passion and creativity that his designer friends put into their work … he is undoubtedly a super stylish man.
Eric McCormack Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson Will and Vicki. The virgin Walden/Abelson voyage. If you're gonna break the almost 3 yrs to the day pandemic Zoom streak, and do a first Live in person from the new digs, how better than with handsome, charming, fabulous, Emmy, SAG, and GLAAD Award Winning, Eric McCormack? Couldn't be done. If you're gonna look into a set of eyeballs, share rarefied air, lotsa laughs, and some snacks, well…it doesn't get better than this. Thank you, Loren Gold for putting up with my incessant begging and pleading and making this happen. Exceeding all expectations, Eric was easy, expressive, talented (he did accents, impressions, and sang a teeny bit), and crazy fun. Stories, stories, and more stories, one better than the last. When we wrapped and Eric's fab assistant, Michelle Loparo, said some of said stories were new to her, well, score! From his early days in Toronto, school plays with David Furnish, no, really! Day jobs at Baskin Robbins, and a gas station, his father's secret revealed, childhood heroes and how one blew Eric's adult mind, five years doing Shakespeare in rep, breaking into TV, Lonesome Dove, meeting his unlikely perfect partner, manifesting his highest dream––auditioning for James Burrows, landing the part that would change his life, Will and Grace fun, bringing childhood imagings to life… Freddy Mercury, Barry Manilow, Elton John, starring on Broadway in The Music Man, turning serious… Travelers (Netflix- 3 seasons to binge), the upcoming, Departure (Peacock), Slasher (AMC), The Other Black Girl (Hulu) the acclaimed Drinkwater (Canadian Prime, soon here), plus another Broadway turn, The Cottage, directed by his great friend, Game Changers alum, Jason Alexander, coming this summer, and, as if that t'weren't enough, two podcasts soon to drop, one, Eating Out, with his pal, Steven Weber, a Women Who Write alum, and Just Jack and Will with his great friend Sean Hayes. I'm exhausted typing it, let alone this indefatigable man living it all, no doubt, brilliantly. There are more stories, unmentioned. Tasty treats reenacted to delight. I'm still basking in the glow, wondering how I'll ever Zoom again. Eric McCormack has ruined me for pandemic worry. What a way to break free. Whee! This week, I speak to singer and star, Tallia Storm, on the realities of navigating fame as a woman in her 20's.Tallia was just 13 years old when she handed her demo CD to Sir Elton's partner David Furnish in a hotel restaurant. Sir Elton called her 24 hours later and invited her to open his UK concert to 17,000 people to great critical acclaim. She now lives in an Instagram world that has enabled her to do what she wants and deliver the kind of music she wants. She has been featured on multiple TV shows and has a huge social media following. What struck me about Tallia was her genuine modesty. This conversation paints a portrait of exactly what it looks like to get famous by simply believing you can do it and saying "yes" when the opportunities come your way.Listen as we discuss:How Tallia got her big break at age 13 thanks to Elton John. The advantage of having 10 years of experience by age 23.When even famous artists can't afford to pay their rent.Taking the tube to the Brit Awards. The big break in the USA that almost was.The culture of bullying she encountered in Scotland. Her first heartbreak and the joy of being able to cry.A sit down I had with my mom at age 40.Dating, love, the usual. The "Year of Yes" and how she ended up writing with Nile Rodgers.Tallia's secret to happiness? Introduction: Minutes 0 to 3:30 We'll be off next week and back on October 29th. My dog got kicked out of puppy kindergarten. Here's a link to the Twitter thread about that I mentioned. Royals: Minutes 3:30 to 21:30 We've been hearing for some time that the palace is worried about the upcoming fifth season of The Crown. The Windsors were pleased with it up until last season when Diana was introduced. We're hearing that the palace wants a fiction warning added. By freaking out about The Crown, Charles is bringing more attention to it. Prince Philip and his mistress Penny Knatchbull's relationship will be shown this season. Prince Charles' coronation will supposedly only be an hour but it will likely have other events that last the whole day. They're saying it won't be as opulent as Queen Elizabeth's coronation. There's a controversy over the crown that Camilla will wear as it has the Koh-i-noor diamond stolen from Indian. The coronation date is on May 6th, which will be Archie's fourth birthday. Chandra doesn't think this was even a factor in the planning. It's not known yet whether the Sussexes are invited, the royals are probably waiting to see what's in Harry's memoir. We're also hearing that Harry's memoir and their Netflix docuseries will be out in December. Prince Harry is suing Associated Newspapers, the parent company of The Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday, along with Elton John and David Furnish, Elizabeth Hurley, Sadie Frost, and Baroness Doreen Lawrence, whose son Stephen Lawrence was murdered in a racist hate crime in 1993. It's over spying and surveillance. Omid Scobie reported in his column this week that Harry would take the stand if it came to that. Will and Kate are covering People Magazine this week. They're one of two covers along with Christopher Meloni. The coverage claims Will is going to step up running the Duchy of Cornwall and that they're supposedly embracing a heavier workload and their increased visibility. The Cambridges did a radio program for World Mental Health Day. The segment they released to their social media was so bad. Will just talked about a “toolbox” without giving examples. They should phase this issue out of their charity portfolio as they're lightweights. William is said to have spent last weekend at Balmoral alone without his wife and kids. I play a segment from Zoom where we talk about an humanitarian award the Sussexes are getting in December. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie: Minutes 21:30 to 29:45 In January, 2021, Angelina sent an email to Brad offering to sell him her half of the Miraval wine business. This was released as part of her defense in Pitt's lawsuit against her for selling to Stoli. We also heard a statement from Angelina's lawyer that Brad hasn't denied his abuse of her and the kids. Brad had been cutting Angelina out of the business and was spending money in ways she hadn't approved. He doesn't seem to care about this at all and is on the current cover of Billboard Magazine to show off the renovated music studio in Miraval. We are also hearing that he wants to sell his production company, Plan B. Chandra thinks Pitt has been bleeding money from that business and that he's cash poor. I play a segment from Zoom where we talk about Brad and Angelina. Comments of the week: Minutes 29:45 to end My Comments of the week are from Janey and MrsFonzieFace on Peridot's post about Jonathan Majors covering Men's Health and getting in incredible shape. Chandra's comment of the week is from Coco on the post about Brad Pitt trying to sell Plan B. Thanks for listening bitches!
The Daily Mail Group - Associated Newspapers - has been accused of 'abhorrent criminal activity' by Doreen Lawrence - mother of the murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence. She's lodged a claim in the High Court along with Prince Harry, Elton John, David Furnish, Elizabeth Hurley, Sadie Frost and former Lib Dem MP Simon Hughes. They allege the papers engaged in unlawful acts - including the hiring of private detectives to hide listening devices inside people's cars and homes. On today's episode of The News Agents we take our listeners into the 'dark arts' of journalism from the people who actually exploited others to get their stories. One is a private investigator who hacked Meghan Markle's data. One was a reporter for the News of the World who was convicted of phone hacking, blew the whistle on his bosses, and now campaigns for better press regulation. We ask what has happened in the decade since the Leveson enquiry threw a spotlight onto the unscrupulous and illegal way that so many tabloid stories were obtained. The government has lost its appetite for any further press regulation. But has the public? And how likely is it that further allegations will emerge of as a result of this new case? Iggy Pop a repris " You Want it Darker " de Leonard Cohen, nouvel extrait de cet album complet, ‘'Here It Is : A Tribute To Leonard Cohen'', qui sortira le 14 octobre comme Norah Jones, James Taylor, Nathaniel Rateliff, Peter Gabriel, Mavis Staples et d'autres. Elton John began his career as a talented pianist in the London suburbs where he created his debut album, “Empty Sky”, which began the course for Elton's 7 consecutive #1 albums. The rock ‘n roll legend's rush of superstardom soared in the 70s with money and fame, however he also struggled with burnout, drug use, and personal crises. While navigating tabloids and scandals in the 80s, Elton reached sobriety and supported his loved ones during the AIDS epidemic. With new music and a newfound outlook in the 90s, Elton was inducted into the Rock' N Roll Hall of Fame, won an Academy Award, and found love with his husband, David Furnish. Now, Elton continues to build his legacy with musical collaborations and another world tour. Although he's had a great ride in the last 30 years, Elton knows he'll keep on rockin'. It has been quiet in terms of Meghan and Harry and their charitable work. The pair had made it known that they intended to take an undisclosed amount of time off, after the birth of Lili, as parental leave allowing them to adapt to being a family of 4. The gossip mill hasn't stopped. As Meghan once said she can be nowhere yet everywhere. We heard this past week that Meghan and Harry took another step in fulfilling their business contract with Netflix, with news that Meghan will Executively Produce, alongside Sir Elton John's husband David Furnish, an aminated series about a 12-year-old girl, who, as she faces life's daily challenges, is inspired by a variety of influential women from history. A very Meghan theme that will she her continuing to advocate for girl power and gender equity. We also got to hear this past week that Meghan and Harry and their Archewell foundation took their first step in fulfilling their commitment made back in May of this year, to support in a practical way the Los Angeles based mother and baby charity Harvest Home. This past May, Archewell Foundation announced that as part of Meghan and Harry's mission to build a more equitable and just future for women, that in partnership with Procter & Gamble, Meghan and Harry would be working with organizations such as Girls Inc. and the National Women's Law Center. And in honour of Mother's Day, they made a commitment to purchase supplies for the second residence for Harvest Home LA, the homeless shelter specifically for expectant mothers.Procter & Gamble both through their community support program as well as in collaboration with other non-profits like Archewell are keen to be seen as a company that gives back. For their part Meghan and Harry whilst no longer working Royals, will want to ensure that the companies that they work with have high ethical standards. Rightly or wrongly, Meghan and Harry will be held accountable in the media if they chose to work with dodgy people or organizations. Regardless of the amount of control that Meghan and Harry have over the actions of other people, in the eyes of the world's highly judgmental media, the blame for any unsavoury activities will be laid at the feet of Meghan and Harry. Meghan and Harry appear to have found a relatively safe partner in P & GP & G say they want to lead the charge in doing the right thing and use every opportunity, no matter how small, to set change in motion. To be a force for good and a force for growth. They have set up various campaigns around doing good deeds or Acts of Love as they call them to support parents and children around the world. P & G have also set themselves up as a company that is inclusive and one that supports gender equality. Per the P & G 2020 Citizenship report P & G in the US has turned their attention to addressing systemic racism and inequality. In was in this context that as part of their on-going collaboration and fulfilling their Mother's Day promise to support Harvest Home in practical ways, that this past week pallet loads of diapers were dropped off on behalf of P & G, Meghan and Harry, and Archewell. Harvest Home were extremely thankful for the 'pallets and pallets of diapers' and posted as much on their social media accounts. For the paper's Diary Editor Richard Eden, Pearl sounds like an extension of Meghan's persona. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

‘my brother and his friends' battle with HIV motivated me to want to help' – Anne Aslett joins Purposely Podcast to share her story Anne Aslett is the Chief Executive Officer of the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF). She has been with the Foundation for almost 20 years having joined from the commercial sector. Initially Anne joined as a volunteer and she is now their Global CEO and responsible for disbursing over $60 million in grants. Anne talks about her brothers fight with HIV and misdiagnosed brain tumour that would eventually take his young life. How his experience along with that of his close friends led her to want to help others going through the same thing. She initially joined HIV charity Terrence Higgins Trust (UK) as a volunteer moving on to help Elton John set up a supporter database for his own AIDS Foundation. You will hear how a bold suggestion to Elton and his manager, interrupting a conversation they were having in the office, led to a popup shop selling Elton's used clothing and raised significant funds to help their early work. Anne shares the story of the Elton John AIDS Foundation and their mission to end discrimination, HIV infections and AIDS deaths. No matter who or where you are in the world. More specifically Anne talks about the incredible success they have had with a project in South London whereby they switched to automatic HIV testing rather than the traditional opt in test. Anne also talks about working what it is like to work Elton John as well Elton's husband David Furnish who is the Chairman of the Foundation. How she travelled with the charity's celebrity Patron Victoria Beckham to a project affecting girls at risk of HIV and she was up close and personal when President Macron awarded Elton with the Legion d'Honneur and they jointly launched their most successful partnership. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mark-longbottom2/message
Today I am joined by the fabulous David Furnish for an extra special episode to mark World Aid's Day. David is a tireless campaigner and a leading voice in the worldwide fight against HIV and AIDS. David serves as the chairman of the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF), a non-profit organisation established by the musician in 1992 to help fund frontline partners to prevent infections, fight stigma and provide treatment to the most vulnerable groups affected by HIV around the world. What makes a marriage last? We can talk about the research, but in the end, it's where the rubber meets the road that matters most. For today's show, we have a special episode with some very special guests. They recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary by talking to 40 famous couples who all have long-standing marriages. So that we not only get a glimpse into the private lives of well-known people, which is interesting in and of itself, but we also get a sense of the special sauce that has helped them, each of them, stay together and connected over many, many years. There's also a moment in this interview that was perhaps, one of my most challenging as a host, when I asked the tough question that I was afraid might have actually taken my guest down for the count. Fortunately, as you'll hear, he's okay and his wife stepped in with a masterful answer to an important question. Neil Sattin: Their names are Marlo Thomas and Phil Donahue, and as I mentioned, they have now been married for more than 40 years. He's also been inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame and is a recipient of a George Foster Peabody Award. Together, they are the authors of the best-selling book, What Makes a Marriage Last, where as I mentioned, they have interviewed 40 celebrated couples about their relationships and the specific things that help them stay connected through the good times and the challenging times. Neil Sattin: It's a series of fascinating interviews with people like President Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, LL Cool J and Simone Smith, Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Elton John and David Furnish, Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan, Sting and Trudie Styler, Deepak and Rita Chopra, Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner. Russell and Robert chat to music legend & flamboyant superstar Sir Elton John CBE from lockdown at his home in Los Angeles. We discuss art collecting, a lifelong obsession that began by collecting dinky toys and vinyl records during childhood, buying Man Ray posters at Athena when he first started songwriting with Bernie Taupin, why he started his photography collection in the early 1990s, what it was like to be photographed by Irving Penn, why he just missed out on getting his portrait taken by Robert Mapplethorpe, his friendships with contemporary artists such as Nathaniel Mary Quinn and Catherine Opie, his admiration for David Hockney, and why he & John Lennon once refused to answer the door to Andy Warhol!!! We discuss his love of glass, a preference for all-things analogue, his love of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, staging the groundbreaking exhibition 'The Radical Eye' at Tate Modern (that included photographs from the 1920s to the 1950s) and his hopes to stage further exhibitions at the V&A (where a gallery was recently named after Elton and husband David Furnish). We also discover his lockdown passion for jigsaw puzzles, playing Snakes & Ladders with his kids, and joyful binge-watching TV shows such as Fleabag and Pose!Follow @EltonJohn on Instagram, Elton's website is: https://www.eltonjohn.comPlease visit @EJAF for the Elton John AIDS Foundation and website: http://ejaf.orgFor all images discussed in today’s episode visit @TalkArt and we are also on Twitter @TalkArtPodcast. Here we go! ///// > ///// BRANDI: “Today’s movie is ROCKETMAN (2019), the biographical musical film directed by Dexter Fletcher, and written for the screen by Lee Hall. It features a star-studded cast with the likes of Taron Egerton, Bryce Dallas Howard, Gemma Jones and so many others. Its executive produced by Sir Elton John and his husband David Furnish also has a producer credit.” SUNNI: “This movie chronicles how Elton John went from a child piano prodigy to his skyrocketing rise to stardom and his struggle to overcome the vices we hear so many rock stars battle with. It also delights us with the vocal stylings of Taron Egerton as the leading man of the movie Elton Hercules John.” No spoilers. BRANDI: “My first impression of the film is its similarity to ACROSS THE UNIVERSE in the way that the songs tell the story of a particular scene or scene transitions and situations. I always enjoy a musical, especially when people who I had no idea could sing bust out their vocal chops. We get to hear Taron Egerton, who sang “I'm Still Standing” in 2016's animated musical SING, take the reins and we even get a taste of Bryce Dallas Howard, Gemma Jones, and Jamie Bell's musical abilities as well.” SUNNI: “Taron Egerton and Sir Elton John worked together previously, in KINGSMEN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE. I wonder if they talked about his vocal abilities at that time? Fun fact: Elton John had Justin Timberlake in mind to play him when he and David Furnish began working on the film. Tom Hardy was originally signed on to play the role of Elton John, and they were going to have him lip sync on a vocal track. He said in an interview that he's not a singer and in his words, "It's hard to open my mouth that way." BRANDI: “If you're a fan of Elton John's music, or if you only know one or two songs like ‘Benny and the Jets’ or ‘Tiny Dancer’, you'll probably enjoy the movie. If you're not a fan of musicals, then you probably won't.” SUNNI: “ROCKETMAN (2019) is a fantastical biopic full of vivid colors, outrageously spectacular costumes, and brilliantly performed music. If you're curious about either, then you should invest two hours. At least it'll put a tune in your head.” Rotten Tomatoes: 89% (CERTIFIED FRESH) Metacritic: 69 One Movie Punch: 8.0/10 ROCKETMAN (2019) is rated R and is currently available to rent or own on Amazon Prime, Vudu, YouTube, Apple TV, and Redbox!
This week, Catherine Raynes reviews two new exciting books for you to read.Gotta Get Theroux This - Louis TherouxIn 1994 fledgling journalist Louis Theroux was given a one-off gig on Michael Moore’s TV Nation, presenting a segment on apocalyptic religious sects. Gawky, socially awkward and totally unqualified, his first reaction to this exciting opportunity was panic. But he’d always been drawn to off-beat characters, so maybe his enthusiasm would carry the day. Or, you know, maybe it wouldn’t . . .In Gotta Get Theroux This, Louis takes the reader on a joyous journey from his anxiety-prone childhood to his unexpectedly successful career. Nervously accepting the BBC’s offer of his own series, he went on to create an award-winning documentary style that has seen him immersed in the weird worlds of paranoid US militias and secretive pro-wrestlers, get under the skin of celebrities like Max Clifford and Chris Eubank and tackle gang culture in San Quentin prison, all the time wondering whether the same qualities that make him good at documentaries might also make him bad at life.As Louis woos his beautiful wife Nancy and learns how to be a father, he also dares to take on the powerful Church of Scientology. Just as challenging is the revelation that one of his old subjects, Jimmy Savile, was a secret sexual predator, prompting him to question our understanding of how evil takes place. Filled with wry observation and self-deprecating humour, this is Louis at his most insightful and honest best.Me - Elton JohnIn his first and only official autobiography, music icon Elton John reveals the truth about his extraordinary life, from his rollercoaster lifestyle as shown in the film Rocketman, to becoming a living legend.Christened Reginald Dwight, he was a shy boy with Buddy Holly glasses who grew up in the London suburb of Pinner and dreamed of becoming a pop star. By the age of twenty-three he was performing his first gig in America, facing an astonished audience in his bright yellow dungarees, a star-spangled T-shirt, and boots with wings. Elton John had arrived and the music world would never be the same again. His life has been full of drama, from the early rejection of his work with song-writing partner Bernie Taupin to spinning out of control as a chart-topping superstar; from half-heartedly trying to drown himself in his LA swimming pool to disco-dancing with Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth; from friendships with John Lennon, Freddie Mercury, and George Michael to setting up his AIDS Foundation to conquering Broadway with Aida, The Lion King, and Billy Elliot the Musical. All the while Elton was hiding a drug addiction that would grip him for over a decade. In Me, Elton also writes powerfully about getting clean and changing his life, about finding love with David Furnish and becoming a father. In a voice that is warm, humble, and open, this is Elton on his music and his relationships, his passions and his mistakes. This is a story that will stay with you by a living legend.LISTEN TO AUDIO ABOVE
Me by Elton John – his memoir, in his own words and I just loved it. He takes a really wry look back at his life – the childhood, the talent, meeting Bernie, the clothes, tours, money, men, Bernie Reid, the drugs, the tantrums, other celebrities, and of course David Furnish and the kids. It's really great. The Guardians by John Grisham. A young white lawyer is murdered in mysterious circumstances and a black guy (of course) put away for a murder he did not commit. Enter the Innocence Project – or a version of it, in this book called The Guardians – who work to get the poor guy freed but there are powerful forces at work who don't want him exonerated and all sorts of dodgy stuff to cover up.

It wasn’t easy for Elton John to get producers to keep all the scenes in his new fantasy-biopic, “Rocketman.” He was determined that the Paramount film not gloss over his sexuality or past drug use. Despite his efforts, Russia’s version appears to be missing about five minutes-worth of footage. . Also, we meet the American singer who teaches Italian kids how to sing like Beyoncé; plus the story of how Lucia Lucas became the first transgender person to sing a lead part in a standard operatic work in the US; why Lincoln, Nebraska is a great place to hear traditional Yazidi music; and Filipina-American musician Ruby Ibarra tells her family story with rap. They are all examples of something that failed to find success upon release but have developed an audience in years since. They are examples of what we call "cult classics". Posh Spice, Victoria Beckhams, Vicky Adams... today we take a quote from her former music school principal: If Victoria hadn't had the lucky breaks she had and the people having faithin her to make her what she is, she probably would have been singing anddancing on a cruise liner. Do we think this is true? Lets Stop – slow down – take a deep breath and respect the solo career of VictoriaCaroline Beckham._________________________________Shes one half of the most photographed couple in Britain, queen of the wags, inventor of the POB.Can't discuss her without her husband David Beckham. The Beckhams suffered extreme mocking from Alistair McGowan as they imitated the two.One thing we can say about Victoria: She was not afraid of a trend. In fact, I don’t think she met oneshe didn’t like. Dramatically launched her music career in August 2000. Duet, she didn’t want to step outalone so she Truesteppered out with the garage tinged “Out of your mind” featuring DaneBowers. There was a real trend for the reply song – so we had Damons FuckYou, followed by Frankie Fuck you right back. Mario, I don’t wanna know. Followed by SholaAma, You already knew. And then this, a follow up to Truesteppers top 10 record “Bugging”. Replies were soooooo noughties but so were epic chart battles. This week on StoryWeb: Elton John and Bernie Taupin’s album Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. When I was fifteen years old, my favorite album was Elton John’s Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. Even then, I knew it was something special, a truly unique album. Recently, I listened to the album again – for the first time in over thirty years. Wow! It still holds together. Elton John himself – among numerous other musicians, producers, and critics – believes Captain Fantastic is his best album. The ninth formal studio release album for Elton John, Captain Fantastic was the first album to debut at number one on the US Billboard 200. Rolling Stone ranks it at number 158 on its list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” The album was recorded at Caribou Ranch outside of Nederland, Colorado – just a hop and a skip from our home in Boulder. Taken in its totality, the album tells the powerful story of the growing relationship – both musically and personally – between Captain Fantastic (Elton John) and the Brown Dirt Cowboy (Bernie Taupin). The album follows their beginnings as a songwriting duo churning out songs in the late 1960s for a pop hits mill in London. Their managers have no thought in the least that they’re working with a lyricist and composer who have the potential to hit it big themselves. For this reason, Bernie Taupin (who wrote the lyrics to the songs) and Elton John (who wrote the music) say that they were writing with “bitter fingers” (the title of the third song on the album). Also chronicled is Elton John’s narrow escape from what would have been a disastrous marriage to Linda Woodrow, who did not see the value of his music. “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” also tells of Elton John’s failed 1969 suicide attempt in response to the engagement. This song was, of course, the big hit from the album, but I think it’s important to put it next to “We All Fall in Love Sometimes,” which appears near the end of the album. Even as a fifteen-year-old, I thought – and still think – the song tells of Elton John and Bernie Taupin’s deepening personal relationship. Elton John said in later years, “Captain Fantastic was written from start to finish in running order, as a kind of story about coming to terms with failure – or trying desperately not to be one. We lived that story." Accounts of the recording sessions indicate that the album was also recorded from start to finish, including the last two songs – “We All Fall in Love Sometimes” and “Curtains” – which were recorded in one continuous take. Music critics laud the songwriting accomplishments of Elton John and Bernie Taupin, with one calling them “the most successful writing duo since Lennon and McCartney.” Unfortunately, the two men had a falling out starting in 1977 and didn’t resume working together again full-time until 1983’s Too Low for Zero album. Even though the two men patched things up and began writing together again, they seem to have lost their mojo and have never quite gotten it back. Elton John and Bernie Taupin were at their best in the early years – from their first album, Empty Sky (an album that has never gotten nearly as much attention as it deserves), their follow-up classics, Madman Across the Water, Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road, and Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only the Piano Player, and finally Caribou (also recorded in Colorado) and Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. Of course, in the decades since Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy came out in 1975, Elton John has gone from being a mega-hits pop star (Captain Fantastic) to being a beloved friend of Princess Diana, from marrying his long-time partner, David Furnish, to being knighted by Queen Elizabeth. Though the music he has written and recorded since the 1970s doesn’t come close to his early output, Sir Elton has come a very long way. For more on Elton John and Bernie Taupin, read “From the End of the World to Your Town: The Decline and Fall of Captain Fantastic” or watch the 1991 film documentary Two Rooms: Celebrating the Songs of Elton John and Bernie Taupin. For insights into this particular album, visit Elton John’s official website and read “10 Things You Need to Know about Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy.” And to learn more about the legendary Elton John’s life and career, pick up a copy of the recently published Captain Fantastic: The Definitive Biography of Elton John in the ‘70s. Rock music – especially rock music of the 1970s – has seen many concept albums, but this one is very much worth returning to. Give it a listen again . . . after all these years. Visit thestoryweb.com/john for links to all these resources and to watch a clip of Elton John singing “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” in a 1976 concert. You can also watch the original television commercial for Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy and listen to the title song, which opens the album.
