Today we're joined by composer and graphics artist Robert Vroemisse for Angelic Warrior DEVA, a modern indie game for the MSX2 released in 2020. Together we talk about the game, the development process, Team DEVA and gaming in the Dutch MSX scene. Angelic Warrior DEVA is a fast-paced, tough as nails action RPG for the MSX2 created by Team DEVA; made up of Robert Vroemisse (pronounced "Fru-miss-uh") on graphics and most music, John Hassink another MSX scene legend on additional music, and Bart van Velzen the mad lad behind the coding of the project. Robert Vroemisse who typically works on graphics is the main composer out of necessity but what a killer job he did. The soundtrack is absolutely jam packed with amazing music written for the combo of MSX-AUDIO (OPL1) and MSX-MUSIC (OPLL) and we couldn't be happier to talk with Robert about it. For more info about Robert check out his MSX.org profile. For the soundtrack to DEVA itself, you can listen to it on Robert's YouTube, on VGMRips, or for download on MSX.org. EM BUSCA DE UMA HISTÓRIA
UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF METAL GEAR IN MODERN VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY

EM BUSCA DE UMA HISTÓRIA

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 17, 2022 84:40

This almost two hour video, is my strange attempt at understanding how the 1998 video game, METAL GEAR SOLID, for PlayStation (and later for Microsoft Windows) managed to change the landscape on video game industry. Indeed all of the METAL GEAR series caused an impact on the medium, that we still feel to this day.. The video which I'm reacting at, explains this fundamental question... The METAL GEAR series is famous for being the first to enter the "stealth" category as well as its long cinematic scenes, complex plots and its exploration of the nature of politics, wars, censorship, genetic engineering, artificial intelligence, loyalty, reality, subjective vs. universal "truths" and many other philosophical themes, in addition to frequently breaking down the fourth wall. The first game in the Metal Gear series was released in 1987 for the MSX2, with an inferior conversion for the NES. In 1990, its sequel, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, was released. With the emergence of the fifth generation of consoles, Hideo Kojima managed to use the potential of the PlayStation to create Metal Gear Solid with exceptional 3D graphics (for the time) and voiceovers in all languages. After MGS came its sequels Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty for Playstation 2, Xbox and PC, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater for PlayStation 2. A PlayStation 3 version of the series was released in June 12, 2008, by Kojima Productions, called Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, a spin-off with Raiden, was developed for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Windows platforms. Its sequel Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was released on September 1, 2015, being the eighth canonical title in the Metal Gear series and the sixth within its fictional chronology. The game serves as a sequel to Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, but its story predates the events of the original Metal Gear game. It was one of the first games, if not the first, to emphasize progressing without being detected by enemies, avoiding as much as possible to confront them. Many of the things that would become hallmarks of the series already appear in Solid Snake's first mission, such as the radio codec for communication with superiors, to clarify doubts about the mission, or even the cardboard box . A version of this same game was made for the NES in 1988, however, with 69 lines of text less and some changes in the story. A sequel, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, was released in 1990 for MSX2 computers, but only on the Japanese market. Metal Gear 2 had important additions to the series, as well as a much more elaborate story full of revelations. After that, the Metal Gear series only returned in 1998, under the name of Metal Gear Solid, for the Sony PlayStation, adapting the gameplay of the first two games to a 3D environment. While the first two games were only relatively successful, Metal Gear Solid was a bestseller, with over 15 million copies worldwide. Several games tried to copy its formula, which made the Metal Gear brand one of the flagships of the Konami company. Metal Gear Solid had two sequels for the PlayStation 2: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty in 2001 and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater in 2004, each one further enhancing gameplay and telling more of the history of the Metal Gear universe. In March 2006, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence was released, with 2 discs, containing the same game as Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, but with a new camera, which allows full and free vision to the player. Also added more features and online mode, where a player can play against others over the Internet. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the fourth game in the "Solid" series --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/manuel-velez61/message

Moons of Darsalon de Dr. Kucho!. No faltéis ¡!!!!!!!!!!! Josua Ckultur + La Alegre Pandilla

Konami released the first Metal Gear game on July 13, 1987. Created by Hideo Kojima, the stealth game came out on the MSX2 computer and went on to spawn a successful and beloved franchise. The game's distinct use of stealth, rather than gunplay, quickly established it as an important and fun growing genre. Metal Gear for the NES and MSX2 was the first ever stealth game ever conceived. The idea of limited hardware breaking down what was going to be an action shooter and into one of the most iconic video game franchises is one of the more surprising stories in the industry.

We're taking some time off for Christmas, so this week we're rebroadcasting an old fan favourite, our episode on Japanese game director, producer, writer and designer Hideo Kojima. We talk about the games that inspired Kojima to become a game developer, his earliest work (ever heard of Penguin Adventure or Policenauts?) and how his most well known series of games, Metal Gear featuring Solid Snake, came about. Once again it's a story of how the limitations of the console's hardware forced the developers to think outside of the box, when the game was developed for the MSX2 and later the Nintendo NES.

WINNEN!
