This episode is sponsored by Lockton, click here to learn more MEMA, the Vehicle Suppliers Association, just concluded its 2024 Annual Conference, a premier gathering for automotive suppliers, thought leaders, and innovators committed to navigating the industry's toughest challenges and emerging trends. Inside MEMA, discussions tackled the industry's biggest question: how to adapt and thrive amidst escalating tariffs, China's rapid advancements, and the growing influence of artificial intelligence. Day one set a powerful tone as MEMA President Collin Shaw opened with a commitment to building high-performing, diverse teams—a pledge that resonated deeply with attendees. A spotlight session saw top leaders from Nissan, GM, and Toyota share how they're 'wargaming' future political and supply chain challenges. Their focus? Supporting suppliers and maintaining transparent communication. Then came a show-stopper: the BYD Seagull, a sleek EV priced under $10,000, which caught Jan's attention. Terry Woychowski from Caresoft explained that this low-cost model underscores China's competitive edge—its tight integration and simplicity. To stay competitive, he argued, the industry must embrace "quantum change," leaving incremental improvements behind.Day two continued with AI thought leader Noelle Russell, who urged companies to align AI innovations with core values and deploy them carefully. Her stance? AI isn't a job killer—it's a task killer, set to eliminate mundane tasks and boost workforce creativity. Then came Michael Dunne with a wake-up call about China's rising influence, urging the industry to pick up the pace before it's too late. The conference wrapped up with supplier CEOs Swamy Kotagiri and Ray Scott advocating a future based on aligned interests and transparency. September 24, 2024 ~ The Biden administration has proposed to ban Chinese software in vehicles, due to possible national security threats in the U.S. Guy, Lloyd, and Jamie talk with Michael Dunne, CEO of Dunne Insights and expert in the global EV market, about the challenges of enforcing the regulations, and how to compete with China in the future.
The 2020 United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) established barrier-free trade among the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Several Chinese private-sector companies have set up manufacturing companies in Mexico that sell to the United States, thereby hoping to work around U.S. tariffs on Chinese-made products. As Chinese companies move production lines to Mexico, the United States grows more concerned about Chinese dominance in the global market. One prominent case study is in the electric vehicle (EV) market: Chinese EV manufacturers, which originally faced high tariffs in the U.S. market, are building up their manufacturing capacity in Mexico. The growing presence of comparatively cheaper Chinese EV materials in the U.S. market could present a threat to the future of U.S. EV companies. In this interview recorded on September 3, 2024, join Meg Rithmire as she interviews Jorge Guajardo and Michael Dunne about the U.S.-China-Mexico economic relationship and its significance to the global electric vehicle market. Today Oliver interviews Michael Dunne, founder of Zozogo, former VP of JD Power in China, GM of General Motors Indonesia and host of the Winning in Asia podcast which covers the auto sector in China. Mike has a huge depth of experience in China, which is an area that the team haven't covered as much as we'd like on this show. The conversation gave rise to a lot of discussions about the lay of the land in the Chinese auto sector, the role of the Chinese auto sector in Micromobility and how micromobility will need to change to see adoption from those who are coming from poverty into wealth and are looking for highly performant and high status vehicles. It's a great discussion and one that we think you'll really enjoy. Specifically they dig into:- Mike's background and how a kid from Detroit ended up in China in the 1990s. - the Dynamics of the local Chinese car industry, including a breakdown of local vs joint ventures vs Tesla. - what (totally crazy!) excess capacity in the auto sector looks like and why that might matter for Micromobility - the top down vs bottom up nature of industry in China, and why the incentives matter. - infrastructure in China - roading vs existing Micromobility- the cultural enablers and disablers for Micromobility in China - and why Micromobility will struggle in the quest for statusIn the meantime. The next Micromobility America conference is now scheduled for the 23rd of September. It'll be at the Craneway in Richmond, across the bay from San Francisco and have more than 50 top speakers from the industry, more than 1000 global participants and 500+ startups and brands represented. If you love this space and want to find your tribe here, head to micromobility.io to find out more details.

Investment sentiment is swinging back to Southeast Asia, the darling of the 1990s, as the relationship between the U.S. and China continues to deteriorate. Tom's guest today is the acclaimed journalist and author, David Ignatius. For forty years, Ignatius has been a highly respected reporter on foreign affairs. He joined the staff of the Washington Post in 1986 and he began writing his twice-weekly column in 1998. Ignatius has also written 11 spy novels, the latest of which benefits mightily from his years of covering the CIA. It’s a contemporary novel that transpires between 2016-2018 in locales all over the world. Its protagonist, Michael Dunne, has a score to settle, and as we follow Dunne around the globe, we are brought into a world where technology is used to spread disinformation in ways one might not have ever imagined were possible. Reality is as scary as this novel is exciting. Cyber criminals continue to perfect a variety of ways to trick people into believing that which isn’t true, fundamentally destabilizing society and causing upheaval in markets and deep division in politics. As we witnessed in the 2016 Presidential election, the threat of technology being used by bad actors is real, which makes this book all the more resonant with what’s going on in the real world. The book is called The Paladin. David Ignatius joins us via Skype from his home in Washington...
@claudiacragg speaks with The Washington Post's David Ignatius @ignatiuspost about his new novel, The Paladin. He is a prize winning novelist who has been covering the Middle East and the CIA for nearly four decades. The story is this: when a daring, high-tech CIA operation goes wrong and is disavowed, the protagonist Michael Dunne sets out for revenge. A CIA operations officer Dunne is tasked with infiltrating an Italian news organization that smells like a front for an enemy intelligence service. Headed by an American journalist, the self-styled bandits run a cyber operation unlike anything the CIA has seen before. Fast, slick, and indiscriminate, the group steals secrets from everywhere and anyone, and exploits them in ways the CIA can neither understand nor stop. Dunne knows it’s illegal to run a covert op on an American citizen or journalist, but he has never refused an assignment and his boss has assured his protection. Soon after Dunne infiltrates the organization, however, his cover disintegrates. When news of the operation breaks and someone leaks that Dunne had an extramarital affair while on the job, the CIA leaves him to take the fall. Now a year later, fresh out of jail, Dunne sets out to hunt down and take vengeance on the people who destroyed his life. Reviewers have compared Ignatius's work to classic spy novels like those by . Ignatius's novels have also been praised for their realism; his first novel, Agents of Innocence, was at one point described by the CIA on its website as "a novel but not fiction." His 1999 novel, The Sun King, a reworking of set in late-20th-century Washington, is his only departure from the espionage genre. His 2007 novel, , was adapted into a film by director Ridley Scott. It starred and . and producer have acquired the rights to Ignatius's seventh novel, The Increment. The Quantum Spy, published in 2017, is an espionage thriller about the race between the United States and China to build the world's first hyper-fast . His most recent book is The Paladin: A Spy Novel (2020). He is a former adjunct lecturer at the at and currently Senior Fellow to the Future of Diplomacy Program. He has received numerous honors, including the from the , the Urbino World Press Award from the , and a lifetime achievement award from the International Committee for Foreign Journalism.

Clarets fans were gleefully posting their bingo cards on Saturday evening after their 1-0 victory over AFC Bournemouth at Dean Court, as Cherries fans echoed the (apparently) much used Burnley-isms such as anti-football, long ball, dirty tactics and many more - completing a full-house, with the Lancashire side going home happy after their (probably deserved) narrow victory. It was a poor game, and not a great advert for the Premier League, but it was a late Jay Rodriguez goal that separated the sides. Cherries were always up against it from the start with a well drilled and determined Burnley side who stuck to their guns and out-fought and out-thought - sometimes using physicality rather than footballing braun - but it was an effective technique which left Eddie Howe once against scratching his head in terms of how on earth he can ever get one over his former club. Martin Atkinson had a shocker with the whistle, but excuses aside, it was a poor performance from a shot-less Cherries side. This week, Michael Dunne joins Sam Davis to go over the game, and as well as taking in your thoughts and some raw match audio from the Vitality, we also go on to preview the forthcoming Boxing Day clash against Arsenal too! Back of the Net is an unofficial podcast dedicated to the highs and lows of AFC Bournemouth. We engage and entertain over 5,000 Cherries fans every week via our pod & Youtube.
