Content warning for suicide starting at 15:45 and 26:23.Well, here we are again at another season finale. Sometimes I find it hard to accept that Ostium has had six seasons, but then I think about how much more story there is to tell and I just get so excited about what's to come. And for reference, we're at the halfway point in the Ostium narrative right now. At least for this series, but that's all I'm going to say about that. I know it took a long time to get this whole season out to the world and I would like to thank everyone for their patience in that. There's a lot going on in the world right now, both in the public space and in our private lives, and sometimes there are delays we can't avoid. So thanks again for sticking around. I would also like to thank the incredible people I have working for me in Team Ostium. Thank you to Chris, Georgia and Emily. I'm very excited to see where our story goes next. Thank you to Mike Nye, a true magician when it comes to sound design. You turn words and dialogue into magical stories that come to life. Couldn't do it without you, mate! This season took a lot of work, but I think the result was one of our best seasons of the show. And season seven is currently being written and is taking the show in some interesting directions. I'd like to say it'll be out some time in 2024, but I think it's more likely to be January 2025. We'll just have to wait and see. For now this is Alex C. Telander, putting Ostium Season Six to bed and signing off for now. This episode was written, edited, and produced by Alex C. Telander. The part of Jake is performed by Chris Fletcher. February is the month most associated with love. Maybe it's to ward off the winter chills, or perhaps it's because Valentine's Day lands mid-month. Whatever the reason, we decided that love was the perfect theme for this month's show. And the perfect way to express love is always with a poem. In this episode we feature six Boomer poets reading their original poems. Starting on July 1st, 2023, marijuana will officially become legalized for recreational use in Maryland for adults 21 and up. This also includes a new law that bans police stops and searches based on the alleged smell of marijuana. But is that enough for Maryland to become a model for marijuana and racial justice? On this episode you'll hear from Michele Hall, who is an assistant public defender at the Maryland Office of the Public Defender, Lawrence Grandpre, the director of research for Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle, and Yanet Amanuel, the director of public policy at the ACLU of Maryland. Many of us remember our childhoods with fondness. Those were the days when we rode our bikes with a gang of friends, caught frogs and built forts and didn't come home until the street lights came on. It was a time of innocence and freedom that our children and grandchildren can hardly imagine. Bill Moore, a journalist for over 40 years, has just published his second book of short stories that take us back to those halcyon days with hilarious images of a mischievous boyhood that will have you laughing until you cry. John Uttley, born just as WWII was ending, calls himself as the last Victorian and the first boomer. In this episode, John shares some fascinating insights into what growing up in postwar Britain was like as well as a hilarious story of the trials and tribulations of owning your first car. Once a year - or so the tradition goes - it's socially acceptable to play a practical joke on someone. When I invited my sometime co-host Tommy Transit onto the show, he should have known better! Tom is exceedingly proud of the book he wrote, so host Michele Hall (also his wife) decided that he might actually believe that his book 'Bus Tales: How to Change the World from 9 to 5' was being optioned to be a film by some big Hollywood producers. It doesn't matter how old you are, it doesn't matter how young you are, there's one constant that is always hiding in the background of our lives. That constant presence is Death. The thing we dare not even think about, let alone speak about. But in this episode we do just that. Host Michele Hall speaks with Death Coach and Death Educator Stephen Garrett whose made it his mission to change the conversation about Death from fear and denial to one of openness and inspiration. And believe it or not...it makes for a fascinating and fun conversation. Remember the back-to-the-land movement? It might have looked pretty ideal to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city to live as one with nature. But what was it really like? You better not forget anything when it's a 6 hour drive to the nearest town. And what kind of work was available when you had a family to support? And most of all, keep a look over your shoulder...because there's bears in them thar woods. In 1967, Arlo Guthrie came out with a hysterically funny antiwar song called Alice's Restaurant . His hilarious retelling of how he was turned down for active service in the US army is so wildly, improbably and baroquely messed up that the results are almost impossible to believe. In The Good Lord Willing Boomer guest, Robert Norris, shares a similarly crazy and convoluted tale of becoming a conscientious objector during the draft days of the Vietnam war. This woman didn't understand as a child she was low income. Everyone she saw had the basics covered so to her they were doing just fine. In spite of little extra money, her mom constantly told her she could be anything we dreamed of. And she was encouraged to read a lot and going to college was never up for negotiation. As an adult, she thought she would be lawyer, but instead she graduated with a communications and advertising degree. As she explored what life might hold for her, she had an opportunity to volunteer at a non-profit focused on helping children and their families cope in difficult medical situations. And she loved the whole experience of giving of herself. Today she is the president and CEO of a non-profit and is walking a path to greatness as she leads the organization to the forefront of state-of-the-art programming in pediatric healthcare. It is my pleasure to introduce you to Michele Hall-Duncan.

Nicole Walker’s Interview Commentary I really enjoyed this interview with Michele and I hope you did as well. I agree with Michele’s stance on women having a higher standard and expectation of excellence for ourselves and other women. As Michele mentioned, “women judge women differently than men”. I am wondering if this comes from a place of “I had to work hard for mine so you are going to work hard for yours”. There is no denying that women have to work harder than men to be recognized, which in turns causes us to have higher expectations of others. I will be happy to see the day when we don’t treat each other this way, it’s old, outdated, and not beneficial. A quote by Michele Hall-Duncan reads, “women empowering women is one of the most important things that we can do for each other”. I admire Michele’s understanding and appreciation of the different leadership styles people possess. As Michele stated, everyone doesn’t lead the same and everyone doesn’t want to be led the same. Respecting individuality and taking the time to get to know those around us is crucial to being a successful leader. A quote by Linda Thompson reads, “Our uniqueness, our individuality, and our life experiences molds us into fascinating beings. I pray we all challenge ourselves to delve into the deepest resources of our hearts to cultivate an atmosphere of understanding, acceptance, tolerance, and compassion. We are all in this life together”. I can relate Michele’s passion to passion for women empowerment, as I have the same. Uplifting and inspiring others sets my soul on fire! Successful leaders beget successful leaders. Our life experiences either leave us bitter or BETTER. We have the choice to help others learn from our experiences in either a positive or a negative way. Effecting positive change is a choice! Being able to help others avoid your negative experiences and pitfalls is a gift! As with Michele, I love helping people breathe life into themselves and find their purpose. Nicole Walker’s Takeaway of the Week Michele mentioned the importance of being authentic, as opposed to being overly arrogant or shrinking. When we choose to present ourselves in the way that we are most comfortable with, we are embracing and walking in our authentic selves. According to Michele, being a Woman of Color is of great value to everyone around because of the experiences that we bring with us. We are is super important! I am a very transparent person, yet I struggle with being vulnerable. Complete authenticity is a setup for vulnerability, yet I know the freedom associated with it is priceless. Allowing ourselves to be fully seen and unapologetically authentic takes an immense amount of courage and strength. I will make it my business to find ways to come out of my shell and present myself fully in both personal and business settings, as I know it will help me to grow and thrive. A quote by Katelyn S. Irons reads, “Shine with all you have. When someone tries to blow you out, just take their oxygen and burn brighter”. Nicole Walker’s Leadership Challenge My leadership challenge for you would be to think about the one thing you can take away from this episode and adopt into your life. I know it’s hard to absorb too much information at one time and it’s even harder to try and implement too many changes at once. When I attend a training or listen to podcasts I aim to walk away with a least one thing that stuck out to me and one way that I can change as a result. I challenge you to do the same! This video earned 1st Place, underwater video category in the 3rd Annual International Underwater Photography & Video Competition, organized by DivePhotoGuide.com and Wetpixel.com in association with Our World Underwater. Mike Boom says of "Komodo Beneath the Waves": In the summer of 2007, my wife and I went to Indonesia for a couple of weeks of diving from the Seven Seas live-aboard dive boat in Komodo National Park. We were very lucky to be there with Howard and Michele Hall, who were scouting locations with Peter Kragh for the Halls' upcoming 3D IMAX movie, a sequel to their very successful Deep Sea 3D. It's always a thorough education to watch Howard shoot, and the Halls are a lot of fun to hang out with. Komodo surprised us completely: it wasn't the dripping green rain-forested islands crawling with Komodo dragons that I had in my mind's eye, but dry islands that remind me a lot of the Channel Islands off southern California. (Although there were Komodo dragons crawling around.) The sea life was amazing: Lynn and I were completely overwhelmed with the sheer number and variety of fish, the rich invertebrate life, and the overwhelming beauty of the coral. This video is an attempt to shoehorn at least some of that into a three-minute video.
