In 1985, the city of Philadelphia dropped a bomb on the radical, Black-led environmental organization MOVE, it was just one of the three historical instances in which the U.S. government dropped a bomb on its citizens. May 13, 2025 marks 40 years since that instance of state-sanctioned terror perpetuated by the city's first Black mayor, Wilson Goode, with the support of the Philadelphia Police Department, and residents indifferent to Black life. Once again on the show, Mike Africa Jr. joins to reflect on what acknowledgement of that horrific event nearly half a century later even means. The observance of 40 years will be held at the site of the bombing on Osage Avenue, May 13th at 5pm.Also on the show, Kensington's opioid crisis continues with outrage over the latest of the city's efforts to contain the issue. Once you hear the story of the Black civil liberties group MOVE, it's almost impossible to believe you never learned about it before. Dubbed by some as a cult and by others as revolutionaries in the mold of The Black Panther Party, MOVE members railed against racial injustice and inequality in Philadelphia during the 1970s and early 80s, frequently clashing with police. A number of MOVE's members were either jailed or killed as a result, leaving its younger generation to make sense of the legacy of MOVE and how the group's actions shaped their lives. On this episode of Paternal, MOVE member Mike Africa, Jr. discusses his parents' imprisonment for the murder of a police officer, and how he made peace with the knowledge that he was born in a Philadelphia jail cell. He also discusses meeting his father for the first time in prison, the experience of watching his father walk free after 40 years inside, and the challenges of raising his own kids in the shadow of MOVE. Africa is the author of the memoir On A Move, Philadelphia's Notorious Bombing And A Native Son's Lifelong Battle For Justice, which is available now wherever you buy books. On a Move: Philadelphia's Notorious Bombing and a Native Son's Lifelong Battle for Justice by Mike Africa Jr. https://amzn.to/4cs15Zw The incredible story of MOVE, the revolutionary Black civil liberties group that Philadelphia police bombed in 1985, killing 11 civilians—by one of the few people born into the organization, raised during the bombing's tumultuous aftermath, and entrusted with repairing what was left of his family. "As necessary and powerful as it is captivating." – Michael Harriot, New York Times bestselling author of Black AF History "Searing and urgent." – Bakari Sellers, New York Times bestselling author of My Vanishing Country and The Moment Before police dropped a bomb on a residential neighborhood on May 13, 1985, few people outside Philadelphia were aware that a Black-led civil liberties organization had taken root there. Founded in 1972 by a charismatic ideologue called John Africa, MOVE's mission was to protect all forms of life from systemic oppression. They drew their ideology from the Black Panther Party and pre-dated animal and environmental rights groups like PETA and Earth First. MOVE emerged in an era when Black Philadelphians suffered under devastating policies brought by the long, doomed war in Vietnam, Mayor Frank Rizzo's overtly racist police surveillance, and, eventually, President Ronald Reagan's War on Drugs. MOVE members lived together in a collection of West Philadelphia row houses and took the surname Africa out of admiration for the group's founder. But in MOVE's lifestyle, city officials saw threats to their status quo. Their bombing of MOVE homes shocked the nation and made international news. Eleven people were killed, including five children. And the City of Brotherly Love became known as the City That Bombed Itself. Among the children most affected by the bombing was Mike Africa Jr. Born in jail following a police attack on MOVE that led to his parents' decades-long incarcerations, Mike was six years old and living with his grandmother when MOVE was bombed. In the ensuing years, Mike sought purpose in the ashes left behind. He began learning about the law as a teenager and became adept at speaking and inspiring public support with the help of other MOVE members. In 2018, at age 40, he finally succeeded in getting his parents released from prison. On a Move is one of the most unimaginable stories of injustice and resilience in recent American history. But it is not only one of tragedy. It is about coming-of-age for a young activist, the strong ties of family, and, against all odds, learning how to take indignities on the chin and to work within the very system that created them. At once a harrowing personal account and an impassioned examination of racism and police violence, On a Move testifies to the power of love and hope, in the face of astonishing wrongdoing.

40 Years a PrisonerThis doc, directed by Tommy Oliver and available now on HBO Max.It posts a celeb lineup of producers, including The Roots, Common, and John Legend.40 Years a prisoner tells the sorry of the 1978 police raid on a peaceful group of hippies, mostly young, mostly African American, living in a house in the Powellton Village neighborhood of Philadelphia. In 1978, Philadelphia's mayor and former police commissioner Frank Rizzo ran the city.He tried to starve the group out of its home, preventing food and water from getting into the house using barricades.  He sent in more than 600 cops armed with automatic rifles, armored vehicles, and bulldozers when that failed. Still, the MOVE members refused to "move." They hid in their basement. In response, Rizzo and the PPD pumped 250,000 gallons of water and teargas into the Move house's basement. Ultimately bullets started flying, resulting in the death of police officer James Ramp.Nine adult Move members were dragged out of the house– five men and four women. One, Delbert Africa was savagely beaten by a group of police, his jaw broken by the butt of a rifle. All nine were convicted and sentenced to 30 years to life.Rizzo quotes:“The police will be in there to drag them out by the backs of their necks. They are going to go either the easy or hard way, either standing up or lying down.” “Get the death penalty back, put them in the electric chair, and I'll pull the switch.”But this doc isn't so much about Rizzo or the cops or what happened in 1978 (and the rest of the MOVE story.) This is the story of Mike Africa Jr and his parents Debbie and Mike Sr who were members of The Move Nine who were arrested during that raid on trumped-up charges and convicted before he was born.Mike Jr was born in a jail cell and ow in his early 40's has never spent a moment with his parents outside of prison walls. Also, on HBOMax, Let Them All Talk was not what we were expecting!  We feared it was going to be yet another movie about people of a "certain age," starring some of the greatest actors of their generation reduced to cute or quirky old folks on one last adventure. We were pleasantly surprised by this story by directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by Deborah Eisenberg. It boasts a top-notch cast led by Meryl Streep, Dianne Wiest, and Candice Bergen with a stand out performance by Lucas Hedges. The film also features one of our fav actors from Humans, Gemma Chan.Listen to the show to hear more about this unique, quirky movie and how it was made.

On this edition of Parallax Views, Mike Africa, Jr. was born in prison. His parents, Debbie and Mike Africa, were one of 9 members of the Philadelphia-based radical liberation organization MOVE after a year long stand-off with police that ended in the death of an officer. MOVE stands by their claim that the police attacked them and that, in fact, they did not shoot the officer in question. Instead the officer was shot by his own colleagues in the chaos. Eyewitness accounts at the time as well as other evidence have since led credence to MOVE's claims in regards to this infamous 1978 stand-off. Nonetheless, the MOVE 9 were sent to prison and in 1985 the non-incarcerated members of MOVE had a bomb dropped on their home at the direction of Philadelphia Mayor Wilson Osgood. In prison Debbie and Mike gave birth to their son Mike Africa, Jr. who has continued to spread the liberationist message of MOVE while living by his inspirational motto "Never Give Up". For years, Mike Africa, Jr. campaigned for the release of the MOVE 9 and since that time all the members have been released. Unfortunately, one of the MOVE 9, Delbert Africa, recently passed away. As such Parallax Views thought it would be worthwhile to remember MOVE w/ Mike Africa, Jr. Mike Africa, Jr. joins us to discuss the story of MOVE as well as to elucidate for us what the MOVE organization believes. Life, Mike says, is at the center of MOVE founder John Africa's philosophy, or, as some have argued, religion. Mike also discusses how he was able to get through the difficult years in his youth separated from his imprisoned parents thanks to the support of his community. Additionally, Mike tells us a bit about the experience of being reunited with his parents Debbie and Mike Africa after they were released from prison. Moreover, we discuss the current protests in response to the police killing of George Floyd and the possibility that they are an "awakening point", the prison without bars that many gladly accept being trapped in, the need to take justice rather than expecting it to be given, what it takes for change to occur, "The System" as a mentality that has created global oppression, the caged animal (such as a tiger in the zoo or circus) as a metaphor for the oppression of humans, MOVE founder John Africa's adage that "the people are as sick as their government", the plight of children whose parents are incarcerated, and more. This is a segment of episode #252 of Last Born In The Wilderness “Pressure: MOVE, Police Terror, & The Unyielding Demand For Liberation w/ Mike Africa, Jr.” Listen to the full episode: https://bit.ly/LBWafrica Learn more about Mike Africa, Jr. and his work: https://mikeafricajr.com Mike Africa, Jr. is a second generation member of the MOVE Organization and founder of The Seeds of Wisdom, a sister chapter of the MOVE Organization. In the full interview, Mike provides background information on the philosophy and aims of the MOVE Organization since its formation in the 1970s, and the role he and his parents have played in the organization up to the present day. From there, he provides a background to the most dramatic confrontations between the members of MOVE and the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD): the 1978 confrontation between MOVE and Philadelphia police officers (leading to the death of one officer, the brutal public police beating of Delbert Africa, and the wrongful conviction of nine members of MOVE), and the 1985 bombing of the MOVE headquarters on Osage Avenue, Philadelphia by the PPD — the fires of which killed eleven members of MOVE (including five children) and decimated 65 houses in that neighborhood. (https://youtu.be/6RFW9KuL-nk) I also ask Mike about case of world-famous political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal — including how the police framed him in 1981 for the murder of a Philadelphia police officer, to which he is still serving time for. (https://bit.ly/3e0xqsY) Mike explains how the tactics he and his legal team have employed in the cases of the MOVE 9 continue to apply in the ongoing legal battle to release Abu-Jamal from his decades-long imprisonment. And finally, I ask Mike to connect the decades-long struggle of MOVE and the Black Liberation movement at large with the unprecedented uprisings currently being waged in dozens of cities around the United States and around the world since the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25th. Mike Africa, Jr. is the son of Debbie Africa and Michael Africa, Sr. of the MOVE 9, released from prison nearly two years ago after they were wrongfully convicted for the death of a Philadelphia police officer in 1978 during an armed confrontation between MOVE and the PPD. “[Mike Africa,Jr.] was born to a mother accused and later convicted of third-degree murder in one of the most dramatic confrontations with law enforcement of the 1970s black liberation struggle. Not only was Debbie Africa sentenced to 30 years to life for the death of a police officer, so too was her husband, Mike Africa Sr, father to Mike Jr, who was caught up in the same confrontation and given the same punishment.” (https://bit.ly/2XONNUc) WEBSITE: https://www.lastborninthewilderness.com PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/lastborninthewilderness DONATE: https://www.paypal.me/lastbornpodcast DROP ME A LINE: Call (208) 918-2837 or http://bit.ly/LBWfiledrop EVERYTHING ELSE: https://linktr.ee/patterns.of.behavior

In this episode we talk to Robert Saleem Holbrook and Megan Malachi. Megan is an educator and an organizer for Philly for REAL Justice, a grassroots police abolitionist organization that has been organizing in the city for years. One of their keys projects has been pushing direct action towards the removal of the statue of Frank Rizzo, and a multitude of other direct actions around racial injustice, police violence and political prisoners around the city. Robert Saleem Holbrook is the Abolitionist Law Center’s Director of Community Organizing in addition to a number of other roles in social and racial justice work, particularly related to mass incarceration. He was released from prison in 2018 after spending over two decades incarcerated for an offense he was convicted of as a child offender. They both join us today to talk about “We Want Freedom” End the War Against Black Philadelphians NOW! from the Black Philly Radical Collective, which was drafted and signed by Philly for Real Justice, Black Lives Matter Philly, The Black Alliance for Peace, Abolitionist Law Center, Human Rights Coalition, and Mike Africa Jr of MOVE, Mobilization for Mumia, International Family and Friends of Mumia Abu Jamal and the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement. It is a set of demands specific to the conditions of policing in Philadelphia that hopefully can be achieved here in Philly, but also provides a framework for discussion around the country. We talk to them about the role of the FOP and police unions, we talk to them about abolition, and defunding police. We discuss the importance of political prisoners in this moment and centering calls for economic justice in the form of reparations. As well as the importance of staying active to turn this moment into a lasting movement for real racial justice for Black and Brown people in Philadelphia and around the country.

On today's episode of Loud & Clear, Brian Becker and John Kiriakou are joined by Aaron Maté, a journalist for The Nation and a former host and producer at Democracy Now and The Real News.Special Counsel Robert Mueller said in a rare press conference yesterday that his investigation is over and that his written report speaks for itself. He added that he would not answer any questions, even from Congress, beyond what is already in the report. But one thing the mainstream media is overlooking is that careful language Mueller used. What did he really say about the DNC hack, Russia, and collusion? Israelis will go to the polls again in September after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to form a governing coalition by yesterday’s deadline. Netanyahu was unable to pull in enough support amid a dispute with former ally Avigdor Lieberman of the ultranationalist Israel Our Home over the conscription of ultra-orthodox Jewish seminary students. Netanyahu will remain in office until the election and, in July, will become the longest serving Israeli prime minister in history. Sputnik news analysts and producers of Loud & Clear Walter Smolarek and Nicole Roussell join the show. Janet Africa and Janine Africa, two members of the Philadelphia-based Black liberation group MOVE, became the third and fourth members to be released from prison last week after serving 40 years. The women were arrested in 1978 after a confrontation with police that left one policeman dead. However, it was proven during trial that no member of MOVE had fired a single shot. Nonetheless, nine MOVE members were convicted. Walter and John speak with Mike Africa Jr., a member of the MOVE organization and son of two of the members of the MOVE 9. Veterans for Peace is Thursday’s regular segment about the contemporary issues of war and peace that affect veterans, their families, and the country as a whole. Gerry Condon, a Vietnam-era veteran and war resister who has been a peace and solidarity activist for almost 50 years, currently as national president of Veterans for Peace, joins the show. Mexico’s Attorney General today charged Emilio Lozoya, the politically-connected former CEO of the state oil company Pemex, with corruption. His arrest warrant is part of an anti-corruption campaign waged by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Dr. John Ackerman, professor of Constitutional Law at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), researcher at the Legal Research Institute of UNAM, and editorial director of the Mexican Law Review, joins Brian and John. Thursday’s weekly series “Criminal Injustice” is about the most egregious conduct of our courts and prosecutors and how justice is denied to so many people in this country. Paul Wright, the founder and executive director of the Human Rights Defense Center and editor of Prison Legal News (PLN), and Kevin Gosztola, a writer for Shadowproof.com and co-host of the podcast Unauthorized Disclosure, join the show. A regular Thursday segment deals with the ongoing militarization of space. As the US continues to withdraw from international arms treaties, will the weaponization and militarization of space bring the world closer to catastrophe? Walter and John speak with Bruce Gagnon, coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space and a contributor to Foreign Policy In Focus.

Philly’s DA shows the limits of being a “progressive prosecutor” by appealing Mumia Abu Jamal’s latest challenge of his conviction. The move saw Krasner disinvited from an activist conference at Yale Law School. To discuss this news, we had a conversation with Mike Africa Jr., a Philadelphia organizer, a member of the Move Organization, and the President of the Seed of Wisdom Foundation. Africa is also the son of two political prisoners, also from MOVE. He was born in prison, and Krasner actually helped both his parents get released from jail. We discussed all of this yesterday, when Africa joined us for an interview.
