Episode 237: Flee, Follow & FightIn this episode of the Mavericks & Misfits Podcast, Jeff Lyle challenges us to examine our approach to faith and controversy within the Christian community. Drawing from 1 Timothy 6:11-12, we are given three crucial directives: Flee, Follow, and Fight. Scripture calls believers to flee from unhealthy controversy and pointless debates that often plague online Christian discourse. Instead, Jesus-followers are called to follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness. This pursuit of Christ-like character is presented as far more valuable than winning arguments. The final directive, to 'fight the good fight of faith,' reminds us that our true battle is not against fellow believers, but against spiritual forces of evil. This episode compels us to reflect on how we spend our time and energy as Christians. Are we building up the body of Christ or tearing it down through needless quarrels? It challenges us to prioritize spiritual growth, discipleship, and the advancement of God's kingdom over the temporary satisfaction of proving ourselves right in debates.
Episode 236: The Hour of Trouble & TrialIn our darkest hours, we often find the brightest opportunities for spiritual growth. This episode of the Mavericks & Misfits Podcast explores the Apostle Paul's imprisonment, as described in Philippians 1:12-18, revealing how even our most challenging trials can advance God's Kingdom. Paul's unwavering faith in the face of adversity teaches us that our struggles aren't just personal battles, but powerful platforms for God's glory. When we adopt a Kingdom perspective, we begin to see our trials not as setbacks, but as setups for God's greater purpose. This shift in mindset allows us to find joy amidst suffering, knowing that our endurance can inspire others and further the gospel. As we navigate our own valleys of trouble, let's remember that our response to hardship can be a powerful testimony, emboldening fellow believers and reaching those who might never hear the gospel otherwise.

It has been claimed that true belonging only happens when we present our authentic and imperfect selves to the world. Our sense of belonging can never be greater than our level of self-acceptance. As social creatures, we have a fundamental need to belong and to feel connected to others. Belongingness can come from various sources, such as family, friends, community, or shared interests. Consequently, it is essential to note that true belongingness requires us to be vulnerable and authentic. Hence, to fully belong, we must be willing to be ourselves, accept our imperfections, and establish a deep and genuine connection with others. Unfortunately, vulnerability is often seen as a weakness, something to be avoided at all costs. However, we must recognize that vulnerability can be a powerful tool for building connections and serving others effectively. When we are open and honest about our limitations and struggles, we show others that we are human and willing to ask for help when needed. In this way, we create a sense of trust and mutual respect with others, which can be essential for effective service. Remember that when we are trusted, we are more likely to be given opportunities to help and serve others. Consequently, people feel confident when we act in their best interests. Therefore, we must approach service with empathy and compassion to be effective in our efforts to help others. Dr. Rebecca W. Lauderdale is a speaker, southerner, and physician at Hattiesburg Clinic Comprehensive Care, providing care for patients with complex medical conditions. Dr. Rebecca is a board-certified internist practicing in south Mississippi since 2007 with Hattiesburg Clinic, a 300+ physician multispecialty professional association that is physician owned. She started in hospital medicine, but in 2016 launched a new adventure in the outpatient setting focused on care for medically complex Medicare patients in their ACO. She's also an inspiring podcaster at Belonging in the South: A Guide for Misfits. In this special episode, Dr. Rebecca Lauderdale will share her personal experience of being an outcast in her line of work and how she took a vulnerable step in sharing herself with the community she wants to fit in. Be encouraged by how she surmounts the struggles and demands of being a physician, which enables her to establish a strong perception of her ability and self-worth. Key Takeaways: "There's this concept of the South being a high context society that there are contextual rules that you have to follow. And if you haven't grown up with these contextual rules about the certain ways that you have to do things and the certain ways that you have to say things, then you get ostracized." – Dr. Rebecca Lauderdale "I have become so fascinated with hearing the stories of people who have found that transition between feeling out of place and feeling separate and letting that define them. And then transition into being willing to be who you are regardless of what the people around you think, which then leads to a sense of belonging that you didn't expect." – Dr. Rebecca Lauderdale "Many times people can't identify with the minority because they can't relate to that." – Dr. Derrick Burgess "Being in positions where I was the only woman in the room and realizing how that worked against me in ways, even when I didn't want to, I had an internalized misogyny." – Dr. Rebecca Lauderdale "The dynamic range is narrow and small, and it's not working for everybody. And it's not because there's necessarily anybody that's purposefully acting against people who are different from them." – Dr. Rebecca Lauderdale "I always try to remember that somebody in the room may feel the same way that I am. And I want to see how we can work together to amplify our voices." – Dr. Rebecca Lauderdale "There's a lot of ways that we can fit in and be willing to share who we are within safe places. It just benefits all of us." – Dr. Rebecca Lauderdale "If you can be comfortable with who you are, the world needs you in the state that you are. They need you as a unique individual, not you trying to fit in." – Dr. Derrick Burgess "You could belong and fit in at the same time, but in a lot of situations, we choose to fit in because we don't belong." – Dr. Rebecca Lauderdale "If you don't ever take the step to share who you truly are with somebody and take a vulnerable step, then you won't belong anywhere, and you will feel lonely." – Dr. Rebecca Lauderdale "Burnout happens because we don't have resources. When we have too much work to do and too little time and not enough appreciation and connection with the people we work with." – Dr. Rebecca Lauderdale "There are a whole lot of social norms and cultural aspects to medicine and medical training that don't allow us to be vulnerable." – Dr. Rebecca Lauderdale "No matter what you're doing, somebody else is probably experiencing something similar to what you're going through. And it's important to try to identify that community or that tribe to grow together." – Dr. Derrick Burgess "I didn't know how to be a good friend until I was 40." – Dr. Rebecca Lauderdale "You can only love other people as much as you can love yourself." – Dr. Rebecca Lauderdale "If we're happy in our skin, we're not judging anybody else's. But if we're unhappy in our skin, we tend to judge other people for the same things that we feel ashamed about and feel that we fall short in." – Dr. Rebecca Lauderdale "We need other people to tell us when we can't tell ourselves." – Dr. Rebecca Lauderdale "If you're slowly draining your tank and you don't recuperate physically, mentally, spiritually regularly, then you can't give that back to your patients, you just can't." – Dr. Rebecca Lauderdale "You're not a bad person. You're also not a quitter if you decide that you've got to do something differently." – Dr. Rebecca Lauderdale "Talk to somebody who is an unbiased party who you can just say all this stuff too, that may be a therapist, pastor, or a close friend, somebody who's just gonna listen to you because sometimes getting it out and saying it helps clarify some things." – Dr. Rebecca Lauderdale "Sometimes places are not gonna change for you, and getting out it's the only thing you can do, but sometimes you can change things from the inside." – Dr. Rebecca Lauderdale Connect with Dr. Rebecca Lauderdale: Website: https://www.belonginginthesouth.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr.lauderdale/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rebecca.lauderdale/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@dr.lauderdale LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebecca-lauderdale-md-facp-65771393/ Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4gzINV5jkDIKCVLqRxGECS?si=48e689af9d37455b Connect with Dr. Derrick Burgess: Website: https://www.drderrickthesportsdr.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drderrickthesportsdr/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TimeOut.SportsDr LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/derrick-burgess-72047b246/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHGDu1zT4K_X6PnYELu8weg Email: thesportsdoctr@gmail.com This episode of TimeOut with the SportsDr. is produced by Podcast VAs Philippines - the team that helps podcasters effectively launch and manage their podcasts, so we don't have to. This week on the Girls 4 Greatness podcast I am sharing another guest appearance I recently had on another podcast, the Mothers Of Misfits Podcast with Emily Melious. I don’t do this often, but when I feel that the topic discussed is as relevant as this one is, I am a huge fan of repurposing the content. Emily has taken it upon herself to create a podcast in which she leads weekly conversations about how to advocate for your child in a one-size-fits all world, and she has invited me to talk about how to overcome the confidence crisis in teenage girls. Emily and I also discuss how to better relate to our children through the use of media, the importance of making our children feel seen and heard, as well as how we can best improve our kids self-esteem. Emily and I also chat about my 5 Daily Habits To Ignite Your Inner Greatness, a download that I launched about a year and a half ago. Emily asks me to walk her listeners through the 5 habits, but we also discuss how they can apply to our children as well. Please be sure to find out more info on Emily, as well as all the info on how to listen to and subscribe to her podcast by heading to www.mothersofmisfits.com. You can also find the Mothers of Misfits podcast on all the podcasting platforms you are likely listening in from. And, if you are wanting to check out my 5 Daily Habits To Ignite Your Inner Greatness then please head to www.bit.ly/girls4greatness.

Right now we are all dealing with new routines, virtual schools, our jobs and unexpected change, all at the SAME time. Our routines have been disrupted, our support systems as we know them have been taken away, and everyone from kindergarten to retirement is trying to navigate this new normal. One important thing to recognize, and understand, is that we all process and deal with these changes differently. There isn't a 'One Size Fits All' solution to adapting to the strange environment we find ourselves in.Today we are joined by Emily Melious, the Founder and CEO of Launch Consulting LLC and she works with individuals of all ages as they transition through change. The excellent insights provided by Emily help us to see that we don't have to do things how we used to do them, it's ok that we all have different needs, and we can absolutely get through this change with the right insights and mindset. You can find Emily here:Mothers of Misfits Podcast: https://mothersofmisfits.comhttps://www.launchconsulting.ioLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/emilymeliousYou can find us here:Subscribe to our weekly newsletter: http://ed.gr/cnc9z Insider Membership Area: https://www.patreon.com/bareslateincWatch the Ask More. In this episode I start out by reading the new mission statement for my podcast, and then look back over the podcast since its inception by reading the list of past episode titles and more importantly commenting on and giving my thoughts about each episode, what was significant about them, what they meant to me, and any updates I have on the topics they covered. If you have not listened to the back catalog of episodes this is a great way for you to find out which ones you missed that you might be interested in. Then you can queue them up to listen to in your favorite podcast app. Since the Thanksgiving holiday is approaching I thought it would also be appropriate to give thanks and talk about all of the people that I am thankful for regarding the sport of motorcycling that you and I love so much. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it. Happy Thanksgiving!!! In this episode I have a down-to-earth chat with Jae, who is the newest co-host on the Creative Riding Motorcycle Podcast. On a recent episode of Creative Riding, Jae talked about the motorcycle accident she had and how she is now temporarily out of work with a broken leg. As she is also an artist, she wants to use her artwork to help support herself and pay her medical bills while she is on the mend. So I reached out to her to join me on the show and tell her story. I also talk briefly about my riding in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland this past weekend, and the special guest I interviewed last night for the my next episode. Hint...this guest wrote the book "A Twist of the Wrist." In this episode Gina and I interview Hayley Bell, the founder and the main driving force behind the Women Riders World Relay (WRWR), a worldwide pursuit "to ignite a global sisterhood of inspirational women to promote courage, adventure, unity and passion for biking from all corners of the world and do something that’s never been done before to this scale." I also share what I have learned so far from Keith Code's "A Twist of the Wrist" books and DVDs, discuss a new part I installed on my Z900RS, talk about a new Dainese jacket that could really help protect you in a crash, and give some details about a non-motorcycle podcast that I appeared on as a guest to help promote motorcycling to people that don't ride motorcycles. In this episode, John Gardiner IV (G4) joins me to give us a full update on how he likes his 2019 Yamaha Tracer 900 GT, and how he is progressing on his riding skills development and working on his Motojitsu belts. We find out how it was that John actually came to the conclusion that it was time to become a motorcyclist and buy his first motorcycle. We talk a little about negotiating when buying a new motorcycle from a dealer. John also talks about how his grandmother helped him out so that he was able to get all the gear and protection he wanted for himself and his motorcycle without having to wait several months as he originally had planned. We also talk about making minor motorcycle modifications...John installing crash bars on his Tracer, and Gina and I installing highway bars on her Indian Scout Sixty. John gives us details on the program he put together for himself to help him expand out on his riding activities as he gets more comfortable on his bike, and how repetition, practice and always having an abort plan in mind helps him feel safer and more at ease when riding. We also discuss working up to doing higher speeds and also dealing with wind and having improved reaction times the faster you ride your bike. We talk about the importance of developing good habits and routines...kind of like having a "preflight checklist" as is used by aircraft pilots...for your motorcycling activites. And we consider the benefit of look backing and learning from mistakes and goofs. Finally we weigh out the value of mixing training courses with practice, practice, practice. And we share our experiences working on our Motojitsu White Belts and how that is helping us obtain better control of our motorcycles and become more skilled riders. We also learn what made John decide to adopt the model name "Tracer" as the actual nickname for his bike. I also mention a little about DanDanTheFireman and how his mission dovetails with what Fast Eddie is doing with Motojitsu. It's WATP vs. YouTube! Well, not really. It's just us talking about six guys who play video games better than average. Kaya from the Official Podcast joins us to talk about Apex Legends, Fortnite, and whatever. We also get into The Dick Show ripping us off, Opie's Yelp reviews, Cringe of the Week, and voicemails. Wait, did I just promote voicemails? That's a typo. Support Deep Discount: http://bit.ly/DD-WATP
In this episode I have two special guests. My girlfriend, Gina Bratkowsky, joins me as my co-host and helps me interview Sarah Worthylake from the Women Riders World Relay (WRWR). Sarah is the Global Relay Moderator and the U.S. Ripple Relay Coordinator for WRWR. She started riding about 3 years ago, and her first and current bike is a Honda CBR600RR sport bike. Her fiancé got her interested in riding and she learned how to ride in the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's (MSF) Basic Riders Course (BRC). He rides a Honda CBR1000RR. We discuss how WRWR got started, its purpose and where the relay started and how far the baton has gotten so far. We also talk about the Ripple Relays that were created to help women participate if scheduling and other logistics do not allow them to join the main worldwide relay. I talked to the beautiful Aesha Kennedy of Brilliant Misfits Podcast about how I have never felt as if I fitted in (even as a child) BUT how I’ve turned that into a gift. You know I really believe that the world needs (and deserves) us to really “bring” and “share” our unique gifts and talents, not be just what others expect us to be, not to hide our light or to make ourselves smaller. When we love ourselves for who we really are and feel good about ourselves we make better choices – for ourselves, those we love and for the world around us. In life you may plan to head in one direction, but you have to trust your intuition and allow the universe to guide you. Something that Aesha said really resonated. She said “We live in a creative universe. If we can trust in that & not try to control it, it won’t lead you astray, everything is divinely perfect.” I love that. That so much resonates for how I live my life. Some of the highlights from our chat: - Investigating unconscious beliefs - What does an embodied practice mean? - Tips and tools to care and connect, first with yourself and with others. - Unpacking taboos around being a sexual being - embracing who you truly are Take a listen. And I hope my story inspires you to connect with your true self and to confidently be the best version of your own “Brilliant Misfit” that you can be. Aesha Kennedy is a Certified Life Coach, a teacher and practitioner of Yoga and Mindfulness and a Visual Arts Practitioner. Her podcast Brilliant Misfits is about women who didn’t fit in and explores how this has helped them create amazing lives and businesses by courageously following their heart and doing it their own way. You can find out more about Aesha on her website, her facebook page or check her out on Insta. And to read more about my daily practices, check out my website.

On this motorcycle podcast: What we did today, Andy reports on the Basket Case Chopper Show where one of our own Misfit takes 3rd place in a freestyle Chopper build off. Listener emails gets interesting when a tipsy Misfit attempts to read one. With: Bagel, Emma, Kat, Faith, Nak, Naked Jim, Mycah, Charley and a bunch of random people that showed up and didn't say anything.
BrotoGP coming at you a little late this week, but we made it. Ev & Dennis are missing so Nak from the Motos and Misfits Podcast joins us to make this a good one. Marquez won at Sachsenring again, but not in the normal convincing fashion - and the pressure came from a very surprising racer. We hit up how HRC development is going, then start talking about the title. Is Marquez the real title leader or is it just #fakenews? After covering all the variability and errors this year, we jump over to Yamaha wondering if they are in trouble. Using something resembling the better performing 2016 frame isn't a good look for them. Rob finally gets his way as the Zarco hype train starts to derail and we jump on the Folger train. We close this one out with Silly Season talks and a bit of shenanigans as always. Enjoy.
