Are the Meindl Glockner GTX boots the perfect choice for alpine hunters — or just too much boot for most terrain? After 100+ days in the field, I put these boots through their paces across goat hunts, creek crossings, and even a glacier with fully automatic crampons. This is a real-world, no-BS review for serious hunters who want gear that performs when it matters.
In this video, I break down the most important lessons I learned during my first full year as an outfitter across Alberta and British Columbia. From scaling my business to guiding 12 clients across three different territories, this year taught me more than I ever expected—about hunting, decision-making, pressure, and staying focused under stress. Whether you're a new guide, an aspiring outfitter, or just a dedicated hunter looking to level up, this video offers real-world insight, hard-earned advice, and a deep dive into the psychology behind better hunting decisions.
After testing half a dozen knives this season, the North Arm Knives Lynx rose to the top. With its wide sweeping belly, full-size G10 handle, and tough Magnacut blade, this fixed blade knife proved itself in the field during multiple big game breakdowns. In this review, I walk through what makes this knife exceptional, what it's not ideal for, and why it's earned a spot in my kill kit. Whether you're a backpack hunter or a guided client looking for reliable gear, this review cuts through the noise and delivers real-world insight.
Longtime Rokslide writer, film host, and friend of the show, Tony Trietch, joins the Rokcast to talk about what it really takes to consistently find success out West. From giant mule deer and desert bulls to decoying rut-crazed whitetails, Tony breaks down the lessons he's learned after decades of hunting the West as a nonresident. Tony dives into how western hunting has changed over the years, why time in a unit still beats any shortcut, and how he's adapted his approach as tags get harder to draw and mule deer populations continue to shift. The guys also get into scouting strategies, learning new country, physical preparation, archery gear setups, and the mindset required to stay patient on mature animals. The conversation also covers hunting more efficiently with limited tags, why repeat experience in a unit matters, rangefinding binoculars vs. handheld rangefinders, and so much more. If you're a DIY western hunter trying to become more efficient, patient, and adaptable in the mountains or plains, this episode is packed with hard-earned lessons from one of the most experienced and successful nonresident hunters in the game. Is this the ultimate tripod head for hunters? The Wiser Precision Ridge Warden might be the most practical hybrid tripod head on the market — lightweight, strong, and uniquely capable of both glassing and shooting with its pan, tilt, and cant functionality. In this in-depth review, I test it with a Kowa 88 spotter and my rifle setup to see if it really replaces the need for separate glassing and shooting heads. We break down what works, what doesn't, and who this product is really for.
In today's episode, I sit down with Landon Huey of Social Distance Outdoors. Landon talks us through how hunting hard has changed his hunting success year after year. Welcome back to the Mindful Hunter Podcast! In this episode, Jay gives a raw update from the middle of a wild spring bear guiding season — six bears down, two clients still in the field, and some honest reflection on wounding and misses that's worth hearing if you're planning a guided hunt. Then we get into the real reason this episode exists: the official launch of the Forged Base Series Socks. Jay breaks down exactly why he spent a year designing a backcountry hunting sock from scratch — and why, after nearly a decade of using merino-based socks, he came to the conclusion that merino fails in more ways than it succeeds. The three core problems: it doesn't evacuate moisture fast enough, it isn't durable enough for hard daily use, and it loses its shape within a couple of days of a backcountry hunt. He also calls out the lifetime warranty model used by most hunting sock companies, explaining why it's a business strategy built on the assumption that most customers are too lazy to actually claim it — and why he chose to put every dollar into the design instead. You'll get a full breakdown of the six-fabric construction — CoolMax, Reprieve XS cross-sectional polyester, a wool/acrylic blend, polyamide, and spandex — and why each one was placed exactly where it is. Plus, Jay shares the story of iteration number six, the one that was almost perfect before a single seam flaw sent him back to the drawing board days after placing the final production order.
In this episode Brian Barney sits down with Matt Tilotson. Matt is a mule deer killing machine. Year after year he puts down great bucks with all different weapon types. Last year was no different; he took three great bucks. The guys chat about some of his tactics and thoughts on mule deer while breaking down his hunts. One of the bucks he took in Wyoming was an absolute giant. He took it in the backcountry, with his bow, while sharing the hunt with his dad. It's an awesome hunting story. Cody Schroeder with a Nevada Mule Deer Buck Nevada might be one of the most interesting mule deer states in the West, and in this episode, Nevada's Cody Schroeder joins the Rokcast to explain what's happening on the ground with Silver State mule deer. From drought cycles and winterkill to buck ratios, tag allocations, and feral horses, this conversation digs deep into the trade-offs shaping modern mule deer management. We break down why Nevada manages for some of the highest buck-to-doe ratios in the West, why hunters continue pushing for even older age class deer, and what that means for opportunity moving forward. Cody also explains Nevada's unique season structures, bonus point system, mandatory harvest reporting, and why some of the hardest tags in the state can still be brutally difficult hunts despite producing old bucks. The conversation also dives into the realities of managing mule deer in an arid state. We cover spring and fall fawn surveys, migration corridor work, wildlife crossings, drought concerns heading into 2026, and the massive challenge Nevada faces with feral horse populations on the landscape. If you've ever wondered how weather, predators, habitat, and hunting pressure all collide to shape deer hunting in Nevada, this episode gives you a candid look behind the curtain. Along the way, Cody shares stories from his own Nevada sheep hunt, thoughts on why hunters should still swing for the fences in the draw, and a reminder that hunting memories with family matter a whole lot more than waiting for “perfect” conditions. On this episode of Wild & Uncut, Kristy Titus is sitting down with DeeAndra Rohr. DeeAndra was raised around hunting, but it wasn't until she met her husband that she discovered a deep love for the outdoors. Over the next 25 years, DeeAndra hunted a number of what she calls “respectable” animals, but says her husband always came home with the bigger one. When he brought home a particularly large mule deer from the famous Arizona Strip, she set a personal goal to harvest a bigger buck than his. In 2024, DeeAndra applied to draw a hunting tag for mule deer in that same area. The Strip is a very remote, rugged unit renowned for producing some of the largest free-ranging mule deer in the country. Some hunters apply for 20 years or more, hoping to randomly draw a tag from the annual lottery with Arizona Fish & Game. DeeAndra received a tag on her first try. DeeAndra's mule deer buck has been listed as the new world record free-range mule deer in the SCI Record Book. We hope you enjoy this episode, as much as we appreciate your support! Beau Martonik sits down with Dioni Amuchastegui, one of the most respected public land mule deer hunters in the country, to break down what it actually takes to consistently find and kill giant bucks in the West. They cover how Dioni approaches scouting from the macro level down, why most hunters are picking spots before they understand the area, how to efficiently cover country to find where deer actually are, and what changes in buck behavior through the season that most hunters misread. Dioni also explains why deer seem to disappear after velvet drop — and why it has less to do with hormones than most people assume. He tells the full story of his buck from last year — finding him on the last day of his last scouting trip, waiting for the exact right weather window, making the stock, missing twice, and putting him down on the third shot. Dioni also breaks down Deadfall Design, his company making a bino harness holster attachment built for backcountry hunters who carry a sidearm. Scouting Mule Deer with Henry Furguson | Finding Bucks, Reading Terrain, and Lessons That Transfer Show Notes Welcome back to the Days in the Wild Big Game Hunting Podcast, brought to you by Phoenix Shooting Bags. In this episode, I sit down once again with P.J. Reilly — one of the first guests I ever had on the podcast — to talk about mule deer, scouting, patterning bucks, and the lessons hunting teaches that carry over into every part of the game. We get into why scouting can be just as rewarding as the hunt itself, how to shorten the learning curve in brand-new country, and what it really takes to find and stay on mature bucks. P.J. breaks down how he approaches unfamiliar units, what terrain features consistently hold deer, and why looking at a buck from more than one angle can be the difference between killing him and losing him. We also talk about Arizona desert mule deer, OTC pressure, closures, hunting competition, and how increased pressure changes hunter behavior in the field. This episode is loaded with practical takeaways for anyone who wants to become a better scout, a better hunter, and a more disciplined thinker in the outdoors. In This Episode We Cover Why I stepped back from the podcast for a while Why not every passion needs to become a business The difference between going through the motions and creating meaningful content Why scouting is one of the most rewarding parts of hunting The satisfaction that comes from finding the animal before the hunt ever begins Hunting velvet bucks and why they are often more patternable The difference between scouting bucks in velvet, hard horn, and during the rut Why rut hunting mature mule deer can feel like finding a needle in a haystack How Arizona OTC closures are changing hunter pressure and competition Why quota-style closures may be creating more crowding and conflict How P.J. approaches scouting brand-new country Why elevation and glassing are still the foundation of his system Adjusting strategy when every high point is crowded with hunters Using alternative glassing angles to uncover what other hunters are missing Why it is important to understand not just where a buck is, but why he is there How to identify terrain features that consistently attract and hold deer How lessons learned in one unit or state can transfer to another The similarities between archery, rifle shooting, and hunting discipline Key Takeaways Scouting is more than finding animals — it's solving a puzzle. The real reward comes from learning how an animal uses the terrain, what brings it there, and how to use that knowledge later. If you want to consistently find deer, learn what makes a place attractive to deer. Escape routes, feed, security, and terrain that limits pressure all matter. One vantage point only tells part of the story. If you lose a buck, it may be because you only understood him from one angle. Multiple glassing angles reveal the bigger picture. Pressure changes everything. When hunters flood the obvious spots, success often comes from finding overlooked country that is just off the beaten path. The lessons transfer. Whether it's scouting deer, shooting a bow, or settling behind a rifle, success comes from learning a repeatable process and executing it consistently.

Welcome to Glenn Robison's Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can't not tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and '30s. I didn’t have time to make the correction on this week’s show, but on last week’s show I completely left out the details on the first record in the segment about cake, “Cut Yourself A Piece Of Cake (And Make Yourself At Home.)” It was Joseph Samuels’ Orchestra with the vocal by Arthur Hall on Grey Gull 1172 recorded in June of 1923. It was also issued on the Banner, Regal, Broadway and Triangle labels. On this week’s show, as you might guess from the photo above, we’ll play some records about Odocoileus hemionus, the scientific name for the Mule Deer. There’s a huge controversy taking place on Catalina Island over the approximately 2,000 deer on the island, first introduced for hunting in the 1930s and you’ll find out a little bit about it. In other segments, Johnny Dunn, Jack Jackson and Victor Vorzanger all have birthday segments. And we’ll take a musical trip to Harlem. There's lots of great music and interesting information so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and prepare to be transported back to a different–and we think better–musical era. In this episode, Larry Weishuhn sits down in the wilds of West Texas with Jeff Johnston of the NRA and American Hunter. Recorded on a sprawling 40,000-acre cattle ranch near the Mexican border, the two discuss the unique challenges of hunting the "fan-tailed" Carmen Mountain Whitetail in the high desert. Larry and Jeff swap stories about the rugged terrain, the necessity of quality optics, and the diverse wildlife of the Chihuahuan Desert. The conversation then turns to a passionate discussion about the vital importance of the Second Amendment, the role of the NRA, and why unity among gun owners is critical for the future of the United States. [00:00] Intro & Sponsors: Larry introduces the show from the high-elevation desert of West Texas. [02:00] The Landscape: Discussing the "spine-filled" vegetation and diverse wildlife of the Chihuahuan Desert (Javelina, Mule Deer, Elk, Black Bear, and Quail). [04:15] The Carmen Mountain Whitetail: Larry explains the biology of this unique subspecies—smaller than a Coues deer but with a tail the size of a standard whitetail. [06:30] Hunting Stories: Jeff recounts his successful hunt and Larry jokes about "double drop tines." Mentions of Fred Eichler's success in camp. [09:45] Tactics & Gear: The importance of "glassing" in vast country. Discussion on optics (Stealth Vision), rifles, and the necessity of flat-shooting calibers (.270, 7x57, 6.5) and accurate ammo (Hornady). [14:20] The Second Amendment: A serious pivot to the state of gun rights. Larry emphasizes why the 2nd Amendment is the backbone of American freedom. [16:00] The NRA's Role: Why the NRA remains the strongest lobbying organization due to its membership base, not just money. [18:30] Call to Action: Larry urges listeners to write handwritten letters to legislators and maintain membership in gun rights organizations. [21:00] What's Next: Larry discusses his upcoming hunts in Oklahoma and Texas. "Everything here, for the most part, has got spines, stickers... if you look at our hands, you can probably see all the scratches." — Larry Weishuhn "To me, anything that scores 85 or better is one heck of a deer." — Larry Weishuhn on the Carmen Mountain Whitetail "Without the Second Amendment and our ability to own guns, this country will not exist in a relatively short period of time." — Larry Weishuhn This episode is brought to you by: DSC (Dallas Safari Club): Conservation, Education, and Advocacy. Hornady: Accurate, Deadly, Dependable. Taurus: Award-winning revolvers and pistols. Stealth Vision: High-tech, precision-driven eyewear and optics for the modern hunter. Jaryd Bernstein from RPM FLG joins the Out of State Hunter Podcast for a fast-paced “Stories From the Season” recap covering an Arizona archery elk and Kaibab mule deer hunt. After nearly a week of dead elk activity, things flipped fast, Jaryd blew a five-yard encounter when a crow spooked a bull, then regrouped and killed the same bull later that day with a 48 yard shot in the rain. The Kaibab deer hunt felt tougher than past years, likely impacted by fire and pressure, but he eventually killed a nice heavy buck that appeared with almost no warning. Jaryd also shares a frustrating late-rifle elk assist where off-road ATV pressure blew a great bull out of the area. The episode wraps with lessons on staying positive during slow hunts and updates on RPM's growth and upcoming products.
