Welcome to the Pursuing Private Practice Podcast! Join Jennifer and fellow CEO & friend Julie Duffy Dillion as they discuss the importance of timing, embracing change, and building your personal brand. Being open to change and adapting your offers can lead to better outcomes; in life & business. Join us as we dive into Julie's story and discover that it's perfectly okay to adjust your path while pursuing your goals and dreams. Join the conversation as they discuss: Timing and Season: Recognize the right timing for pursuing your goals. Giving yourself permission to wait for the right season can lead to better outcomes. Adaptability: From 1:1 practice to group programs, online courses, and eventually a podcast and book, offers change and that's ok. Being open to change and new opportunities can lead to growth and success. Flexibility and willingness to adapt are essential for personal and professional growth. Building a Brand: Online content can play a significant role in building your brand and attracting publishers' attention. Consistency and branding are powerful tools for achieving recognition and opportunities. Financial Considerations: Pursuing your passion, like writing a book, may not always bring immediate financial rewards. Sometimes you need to acknowledge that you may not make much money in a particular season because you believe in the value of your book and the opportunities it could create. Community and Accountability: Find support and accountability through your audience and community. By thinking outside the box (live sessions & coworking with others) you can engage with your audience which helps you stay on track with your writing goals. Remember that success often involves waiting for the right season and being open to change and new opportunities. After sobbing in her boss's office 20 years ago, Julie Duffy Dillon taught her last diet. Once she saw the anti-fat bias and diet harm, she couldn't unsee it. She is a seasoned dietitian trained as a mental health counselor and podcast host of Find Your Food Voice®. Featured on TLC's My Big Fat Fabulous Life, Julie helps people with a complicated relationship with food better access non diet tools like Intuitive Eating and strategize how to remove the shame and blame dumped on them from diet culture. Today we are going to be talking about Confimation Bias for weight loss. The term confirmation bias refers to the tendency to search for or interpret new information that confirms your beliefs, while avoiding information or interpretations that conflict with our beliefs. So if you think losing weight is hard, you will find evidence that it’s hard. STOP doing that! I don’t know if you ever watch My Big Fat Fabulous Life, but my daughter and I love the show. Whitney, was engaged and all of a sudden, her x-fiance, Chase, cheated on her, and got another woman pregnant and their engagement was called off. This situation would leave anyone miserable. Whitney is obviously depressed and upset and even though she’s always been pro all shapes and body sizes, she started to question her body and began looking into weight loss surgery. She went from being engaged to thinking that no one will ever lover her again because of her weight. She blamed her size for her current situation, which had nothing to do with why she’s depressed. How often are you guilty of doing this too? Using confirmation bias to look for evidence why you won't lose weight, find love, or have a more joyful life. Our brains are always looking for evidence to prove our thoughts and beliefs true. So whatever you believe or think, you reinforce over and over. You have an interpretation of what happened in the past and then you filter it through our own thoughts and beliefs. Let me share with you all things confirmation bias and weight loss. Just a reminder, the 30 Day Challenge is in full swing. It’s been really special to see new faces and recognizable faces begin their 30-Day journey. We are 3 days in so if you want to join, you better hurry up because I’m gonna start the waitlist back up for the next 30-Day Challenge that will start sometime in March or April. Also, inside of the Inner Circle – which are for those of you, who, after completing one of my programs to give you the foundational non-diet work, want to do more advanced mind work – we are going to be focusing on self love. I’ve always said that I can 100% help you lose weight – but if you lose weight and you don’t like yourself very much, I don’t feel like I’ve helped you fully. So this month in Febuary we are doing all things -self and body love focused. Some of you who are in the Inner Circle are nervous about this – don’t be. This work that I have planned for you is AWESOME and life changing so I can’t wait. I begin this episode by reading my essay, Self-Care for #MeToo Feminists. It charts my progress from being a wife of 25 years to coming out as a lesbian and trekking west to begin to meet my own needs. This is for you if you’ve been feeling stuck in your life, beholden to others first, or you wonder about the question ‘Do I still have to clean up before dinner parties?’ I’ve often felt like I was either a complete slacker with my diet – or that I was overly rigid. Somehow it’s always been tricky for me, even though I’ve always been at a healthy weight. The trouble existed in my mind … and my guest, Julie Duffy Dillon, is here to put us all back together again. I don’t know about you, but I found this episode very healing! More importantly, I’ve changed some of my crazy thinking about food. Hope this is a support to you as needed. On this show, I learned: What our culture has to say about our bodies Julie’s interesting view on diets Does the entire world have an eating disorder? How to let your body make peace with food … and heal again How to make a healthy decision about, say, donuts How to ramp up your own innate body wisdom Where body shame kicks in with our eating Perfectionism’s cost when it comes to food The illusion about our aging bodies and food Hope you find this useful! Fat-positive dietitian Julie Duffy Dillon joins us to discuss common misconceptions about managing polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), how weight stigma harms people with PCOS, why you shouldn’t believe the hype about certain foods causing inflammation, the connection between PCOS and binge eating, the importance of considering that PCOS occurs in people of all genders, and so much more! Plus, Christy answers a listener question about a particular multi-level-marketing diet and the concept of “accountability.” Julie Duffy Dillon is a Fat Positive Dietitian, Eating Disorder Specialist, and Food Behavior Expert who partners with people along their Food Peace journey. Julie began specializing in treating Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome in 2005 after noticing the connection with weight bias and eating disorders. She sought training on the physiology and endocrinology from pioneering experts willing to not focus on weight loss and diets to treat the complicated condition. This insight has provided people with PCOS to advocate for their physical and emotional health without torturing themselves with diets. Julie hosts the weekly podcast Love Food. It is a Dear Abby show for those with eating concerns hoping to rewrite their fate. Listeners pen a letter to food outlining their complicated relationship. Julie and sometimes a guest discuss solutions before Food writes back. She speaks around the country about anti-diet approaches to PCOS while running a group practice in Greensboro North Carolina. Episode's Key Points: Did you miss the first Love, Food PCOS Bonus episode? Check it out now! You're not a failure! You've been given the WRONG tools to help manage your health with PCOS. Most people with PCOS are given a pamphlet that gives a one-size-fits-all solution... but this doesn't work with PCOS! PCOS affects EVERY cell in your body, which means that a holistic approach to management is crucial. It can affect your mental health, hormone levels, and SO much more! It's complicated!! There's really a lack of research around PCOS out there, and most healthcare providers have NO CLUE how complicated PCOS can be. That means you need to be your best advocate! Solutions to your health shouldn't be agonizing! They shouldn't hurt!! That's why I don't recommend dieting, and I promise you that my solutions will NOT make you feel miserable. I didn't always know that diets don't work. It took me working in the field and digging in the research for YEARS before I really got it. Diets predict weight GAIN, not weight loss, and people with PCOS are even MORE likely to experience that weight regain (this has to do with insulin levels, testosterone, and inflammation... listen to the show to get the details on the science!). Pursuing weight loss should NOT be the primary treatment for PCOS! I've learned so much over the years working with women with PCOS (including Whitney Way Thore of My Big Fat Fabulous Life), and I have the training to help people manage the condition WITHOUT diets. My top 5 tips to take charge of your health with PCOS: Stop being a slave to the scale. Put diets on the back-burner. The diets just increase inflammation and make you feel AWFUL! It's time to put them down. Don't ignore your cravings, mood changes, or weight gain (AKA the symptoms of PCOS)! Say hello to them, and consider that they're trying to tell you something important. You are the expert of your body! Explore self-compassion. Get rid of the should's and rewrite them to support you! Do you have a long history of coping with your emotions via food and now want to find other ways to survive?? There is a way for you to heal your relationship with food AND find health. Listen now for insight. Subscribe and leave a review here in just seconds. Key Points: Hoarding, bingeing, and other related behaviors are the most common experiences from childhood dieting/restriction. I am sorry on behalf of all health and medical professionals for the oppression. You don't have to choose health OR healing. Working on healing your relationship with food will help you promote health long term. Healing is not passive or giving up or weakness. Healing is an active process never passive. Fat on the body didn't CAUSE the problems. Eating sugar didn't CAUSE the problems. Being shamed in your body and not teaching you how to tolerate feelings caused the problems.  Healing from Binge Eating Disorder (BED) takes on average 7 to 14 years. Restricting nutrients or calories may show favorable outcomes in short term yet worse in the long term especially if affected by BED. Keep the data! You need proof that you're bingeing less as time goes on. Diabetes is a chronic progressive disease. It is always changing and slowly getting worse even if you do everything you can.
