This week we are chatting with author, filmmaker, artist, adventurer, ultra runner, and a guy who is "semi rad" Brendan Leonard!!! Brendan has one of the most unique, creative, and oftentimes hilarious voices in the adventure community. He's the author of many GREAT books (which we do a quick recap of towards the end of the episode) including his newest release "Ultra-Something". This book is the story of what he's found through taking on ultra running, told in a way that only Brendan could tell- through lots of tangents on history, pop culture, psychology, viral videos, and much more. Brendan also is the artist behind "Semi-Rad" (one of my favorite websites) where he writes, draws, and creates. He is able to capture the essence of "why" people do big adventures- simultaneously for life affirming reasons and also for the simplicity of "cause it's fun and pointless and it's what makes me happy." In this episode we talk all about his books, his films "7 Summits of My Neighborhood" & "A Shed of One's Own" (which so beautifully captured the passing of life that it made me cry), making a quesadilla out of Jack's Frozen Pizzas, creativity, dadhood, his 15 second recipe book, and a lot more!! This was one of my favorite episodes! Huge thanks to Brendan for coming back on!! I highly recommend checking out his book and signing up for his weekly newsletter! This week we discuss recent polling that shows changes in the evangelical landscape in the U.S., including what a post-evangelical movement could mean. We look at Deir Yassin, the Palestinian experience of ongoing Nakba, and the importance of acknowledging and learning about the past. And we talk about Captain Kirk's trip to space and whether it has anything to do with peacemaking. We finish by asking you to take action! So much of peacemaking is about expanding our perspective. This can feel like a wishy-washy step, but it's a critical one. If we see the world differently, we see ourselves differently. And the way we see ourselves and understand our identity is a main driver of our behavior. What steps can you take this week to expand perspectives? Share with us on social media! Thanks be to God."Who do you turn to when you experience the pains and injustice of life?//Numbers 21:4-9From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; but the people became impatient on the way. The people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food.” Then the Lord sent poisonous serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord to take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live.” So Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live.//This episode was written and recorded by David Vaughn, a member of The Riverside Church. My Neighborhood, Love It Or Leave It. The fact is, when everything is going to Hell, you have to care about ONLY those people and causes you can really help (and really CAN help). The second is a rising wave of preserving YOUR neighborhood.  I predict a growing baby boom.  I predict some inward looking.  I predict we are going to be fine. Hear why.

“What our hearts yearn for, what our souls ache for is a God who walks with through the broken shards of our messy lives.”How do you know that God is with you, especially in times like this?//Exodus 17:1-7From the wilderness of Sin the whole congregation of the Israelites journeyed by stages, as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. The people quarreled with Moses, and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?” But the people thirsted there for water; and the people complained against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and livestock with thirst?” So Moses cried out to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.” The Lord said to Moses, “Go on ahead of the people, and take some of the elders of Israel with you; take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. I will be standing there in front of you on the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink.” Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. "Through the gift the world received more grace than the sum of her brokenness."When was a time you experienced grace like this?//Romans 5:12-19Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned— sin was indeed in the world before the law, but sin is not reckoned when there is no law. Yet death exercised dominion from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who is a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died through the one man’s trespass, much more surely have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for the many. And the free gift is not like the effect of the one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brings justification. If, because of the one man’s trespass, death exercised dominion through that one, much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness exercise dominion in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. Therefore just as one man’s trespass led to condemnation for all, so one man’s act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all. On this edition of Parallax Views, journalist, whistleblower, and former Anonymous associate Barrett Brown joins us to discuss misconduct by police and press in Brown's hometown of Dallas, Texas. Dallas police have come under heavy scrutiny since the shooting death of Botham Jean, in his own apartment, by police officer Amber Guyger. Guyger lived in the same building and says she mistakenly entered Jean's apartment thinking it was her own. According to Guyger she believed that Jean was an intruder and fatally shot the 26-year old Harding University alumnus and PricewaterhouseCoopers accountant. Guyger has since been convicted for Jean's murder and sentenced to a 10-yea prison sentence. Barrett Brown Brown, a recipient of the National Magazine Award during his time with The Intercept, covered the murder of Botham Jean for the local press outlet D Magazine. While covering Botham Jean's murder he has been critical not only of the Dallas Police Department, but also the city's local press. Since then a Facebook account going by the name "Wesley Taylor, Jr." made a bomb threat directed towards D Magazine for publishing Brown's columns. Moreover, this person has harassed Brown's girlfriends and made threats directed at U.S. Democratic Presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke. In the following conversation Brown discusses all of this and Dallas PD's response to the bomb threat. Trey Garrison aka alt right personality Spectre Additionally, Brown and I discuss how journalist Trey Garrison (real name: Norman Asa Garrison III) wrote for major city publications while living a double-life as the alt right personality "Spectre". Under this alias, Garrison became a notorious Twitter troll and host of the white nationalist podcast Third Rail. As Spectre, Garrison promoted #DayOftheBrick which encouraged harassment and physical violence against journalist. Under his Garrison byline, he wrote a column for the Dallas News entitled "Why I Don't Want Diversity in My Neighborhood" that was republished by the alt right outlet American Renaissance. Dallas Morning News Coverage of the Guyger Trial Brown argues that, all of these things, taken together display misconduct and lack of reflection on the part of both the Dallas police department and the city press. Moreover, he believes that these issues in Dallas represent a microcosm of a broader national issue that points towards an urgent need to reform media and police institutions in America. Barrett Brown and Julian Assange At the beginning of the show, Brown addresses his recent Twitter ban and the controversial comments he has made concerning Julian Assange. Barret and I have a frank discussion about his approach to criticizing Julian Assange and how his anger towards Assange has often manifested in admittedly outlandish statements on his part. The Problem of Human Trafficking and Slavery Human trafficking and slavery are not a problem of history. They are a modern day epidemic. Men, women and children are targets every day allover the world, even in your community, no matter where you live. This is your problem as well as mine. This is the fourth installment of our Predation Series.Although most people listening to this have a historical understanding or slavery, most don't realize its current state. In this episode we meet Elizabeth K. Elizabeth is an RN who dedicates her free time to educating herself and others on the epidemic of human trafficking and slavery. This interview takes us through an astonishing and subversive world of abuse and violence that leads to control, manipulation and slavery. Elizabeth shares her story to help others become educated and empowered. Human Trafficking and Slavery: In the Shadows First of all speaking with Elizabeth, she tells us of a conference she attended. The Second Annual Symposium Presented by the San Diego Commission on the Status of Women and Girls: Combating Domestic Violence, Homelessness, and Human Trafficking. As a result, the conference lit her passion to help those trapped in this destructive world. As a healthcare provider she was shocked to realize that possibly 50% or more of these victims encounter a health care worker at some point. Since the probability of encounter is high in health care, Elizabeth is taking action to help educate her peers. The process with human trafficking and slavery is all too familiar. Physical abuse which leads to Homelessness as the victim desires escape Bad choices of drugs and environment to transition to a better direction Control and deception by predators actively looking for someone is this predicament Manipulation and enslavement once they are under their control Not in My Neighborhood, Right? While many will shake their heads at the tragedy of these situation, too many think it can't happen to anyone they know. If this is you, you are wrong. These situations cross all income and demographic boundaries. Human trafficking and slavery have no favorites or boundaries. Abuse, control and runaways happen where you live. Also, technology, social media and the internet make this kind of control easier. So then, what can we do? Stay alert. Pay attention to the people in your life. Even the "adults" that may be out of the home already. How does this or that person sound? Has something changed in their demeanor? Will a normally open person change and become quiet? Has hiding things and whispering become a norm? Don't simply brush off these signs. Talk to them. Find out what is really going on. Let them know that there is help. Most of all, know that there are resources. Many agencies exist that deal with these situations. We have included some important links for you here.
