The Drum of Dumb has spoken, and we discussed one of the most quoted films of all time. Is it so clever that its dumb? You be the judge! Content Warning: we discuss outdated themes in the film that would not be acceptable by today's standards. Old Tomato Face and Mr. Monopoly co-host Bad For Me. If you have a favorite dumb film, let us know at hourofthunder@gmail.com and it could be entered into a future Drum of Dumb. October will be all Simpsons Tree House of Horror episodes, starting with 5 (Season 6).
Arguably the funniest movie of all time comes to the club. It's "Airplane" from the Abrams and Zucker Brothers team in 1980. Comic Simon Seline joins host and Comedian Steve Mazan to discuss all the laughs. IS this the funniest movie ever? Who shines brightest in the serious cast? What was it aping? Did it create a genre? Who was considered for the lead? What's the funniest gag? All these questions and more get answered on this week's Mazan Movie Club Podcast. Come back in time with us and celebrate the movies that honor World War II. Dramas, comedies, and even sci-fi and horror, there is no end to the stories that can be told and lessons that can be learned from this historical, international conflict. For more than 80 years Hollywood has been making movies to tell the dramatic stories of World War II. As impressionable youth, Jay and Shua ate them up and still do. Let's look at some memorable ones. News Mark Hamill visits the White House Riddick will return in the 4th film in the franchise Cobra Kai 3 part event premiering July 18 Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Shua was pleasantly surprised to find that The Fall Guy is a well made, action extravaganza. Ryan Gosling continues his winning streak of fun movies and Emily Blunt shows yet another side of her talent. Shua recommends! Jay was on the edge of his Imperial-made seat while enjoying the series finale of The Bad Batch. Dave Filoni kept us guessing as to the fate of our heroes, and by the end Jay thought it was a satisfying conclusion. Sci-Fi Saturdays This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay is pulling all the strings of the live action version of Thunderbirds (2004) with Bill Paxton. It may have not achieved the success and popularity of the bizarre 1960s marionette TV show, but it was a campy homage with some action and interesting interpretations. Check it out today! Make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU. Enjoy Movies! There have been countless tales of World War II over the years. These stories recount bravery, determination, and heroism in a way unlike any other period of human history. Growing up, Jay and Shua gravitated towards a few classics such as The Great Escape, The Big Red One, and The Dirty Dozen. Plus, believe it or not, there can sometimes be humor in tragedy. Comedies like Steven Spielberg's 1941, Mel Brooks's To Be or Not to Be, and The Zucker Brothers' Top Secret. There are always lessons to be learned and tragedy is often a great reminder to not repeat mistakes. So let's all remember that, shall we? Are you a fan of WWII movies? Which heroes are your favorite? First person that emails me with the subject line, “War is Hell” will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. The story so far: After getting trapped in a well in the middle of the woods without cell service, the boys try tunneling their way out, only to stumble on a secret underground bunker labeled "Moleman's Movie Hole" decorated and stocked like an 80s VHS rental store. After dealing with a bee attack and fixing their food shortage, they discover a magic box with a button that, when pressed, kills a random person somewhere in the world but materializes whatever item you're thinking about into the bunker...A week after discovering the magic box things in the movie hole are getting out of hand. While the guys wrestle with their new hoarding problem, they discuss 1989's dark drama Sonny Boy and, to lighten things back up a bit, revisit 1984's satire classic Top Secret! Also Greg has a green army man problem, Eric tells Boy Scouts stories, and Dan's surprised how ripped people could be in the 80's.Leave us a 30 second voicemail and if we like it we'll play it on the show: (949) 4-STABBY (949-478-2229)Next movie announced every Wednesday. Are you consistent in your life? Are you consistent in your approach to card collecting? And, if you recognize a contradiction in your approach, do you seek to reconcile it? I noticed one in my personal collection: Because Nick Bosa is my favorite player, playing my favorite position, on my favorite team, and because of their relative affordability, my Bosa PC had grown to 20 cards. Most of them are Golds /10. With the 49ers in the Super Bowl, I decided right now was the time to sell 14 of them off. Plus, lots of love for Reggie Jackson (even though I confuse his 1973 and 1974 cards!), especially late-career Angel Reggie. We also give love to The Naked Gun and Zucker Brothers muse, Leslie Nielson.

Or, the Death of Cinema podcast Nicole Veneto joins from Boston to discuss Alex Winter and Tom Stern's irreverent, gag-filled 1993 monster comedy 'Freaked'. The film is a genuine cult classic that was greelit, following the success of the Bill & Ted films and Winter and Stern's short-lived MTV program 'Idiot Box', with an impressive $12 million budget and then quickly killed by 20th Century Fox after a change in management. We discuss the film's unique cacophony of styles, taking inspiration from a number of cultural objects including Zucker Brothers comedies, punk rock legends Butthole Surfers, classic beach party films, and The Evil Dead movies. Then we praise the legendary team of practical special effects and makeup artists (including veterans of John Carpenter films like 'Big Trouble in Little China' and Chuck Russell's classic 1988 remake of 'The Blob') who brought the hilarious cast of freaks to life. Finally, we detail the executive decisions that very nearly railroaded 'Freaked' out of existence, and eulogize the brief moment in time when big studio money was willing to gamble on spectacular, impractical filmmaking and craft. BENNETT YELLIN Born and raised in Los Angeles, Bennett received his B.A. in fiction from U.C.L.A. Still not ready to enter the real world, he enrolled at UMass in Amherst for an M.F.A. in fiction. It was there — on the first day of school — that he met and befriended Peter Farrelly. On a lark, they tried writing a comedy together and this spec script ultimately got into the hands of Eddie Murphy and the Zucker Brothers, creators of Airplane and The Naked Gun. Both Murphy and the Zuckers asked the duo to write movies for them, and their career was off and running. Yellin wrote exclusively with Peter for years until they asked his brother Bobby to join them. The three went on to write a number of unproduced features together until they created Dumb and Dumber in 1994 and reunited in 2014 to co-write the official sequel chronicling the further idiotic adventures of Harry and Lloyd, Dumb and Dumber To. In 2007, the Farrelly Brothers branched out on their own and Yellin partnered with James Robert Johnson to create a professional writing duo that has endured for sixteen years. Among the plethora of projects they've tackled during their career — some produced, others not — the two have co-written Let's Scare Jessica to Death for Paramount Pictures, the Fox situation comedy Unhitched, the direct-to-DVD thriller Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead, Paramount Pictures' Hotel For Dogs 2, the Anchor Bay action-thriller In the Blood with Gina Carano, the 20th Century Fox family film, Santa's Little Helper, and the Warner Brothers re-boot of the Police Academy series, Police Academy: Takin' it to the Streets. More recently, Yellin and Johnston have co-written a live action family stage show adaptation of the hugely popular Angry Birds IP, and the two are currently at work creating an original pilot for a new animated show.Bennett's Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bennett.yellinPhoto: Copyright Wilkinson/2023Opening and closing music courtesy the very talented Zakhar Valaha via Pixabay. To contact Wilkinson- email him at BecomingWilkinson@gmail.com

We're still steeped in 2000s nostalgia here at the podcast as we kick off our seven week retrospective on comedy in the aughts. An era that began with an overflow of post-"There's Something About Mary" gross-out comedy before transitioning into frat-bro antics in the wake of movies like "Old School" and "Wedding Crashers," before the reign of Apatow exploded in the latter half of the decade with "bromance" comedies like "Knocked Up" and "Superbad." We're kicking off the miniseries with a pair of Wayans Brothers satires that skewered two of the most ubiquitous pop culture phenomenons of the era: the teen slasher movie and the tabloid obsession with hard-partying heiresses. We'll be starting off with the 2000 revival of the Zucker Brothers style spoof movie, "Scary Movie" featuring the debut performance of Anna Faris, before jumping to the middle of the decade for the disturbing pop culture artifact, "White Chicks." Actress and designer Mariko Enkoji-Busch joins us this week to discuss the cancellable offenses of 2000s comedy, the decade-obsession with gay panic humor, the enduring relevancy of "White Chicks" and how "Scary Movie" might have informed Max's obsession with cum. "Scary Movie" is streaming on PlutoTV and "White Chicks" is streaming on HBOMax.

Right here, right now, there is no other place you want to be...but listening to internet audio pop culture comedy gold forever and ever, amen. In this episode, the gang recounts the 1984 Zucker Brothers classic "Top Secret" starring Val Kilmer. Why reminisce about a film from the 80s? Because it was great dammit, and, of course, to mock Eric who hadn't seen it – even though he grew up in the 80s. Also, the gang compares "Top Secret" to its contemporaries like "Naked Gun" and "Airplane", but not, of course, "Police Academy" as that series was terrible (except the cartoon. The Give Me Five Podcast is now on Patreon! Take a look at the different levels of support here: https://www.patreon.com/Givemefivepodcast Things get sillier than usual this week as we take on the Zucker Brothers classic parody film Top Secret, and if you know a little German, maybe invite him to listen with you. We also take a look at 2 very similar shows/movies that debuted on Netflix last week, Warrior Nun (based on a comic of the same name) and The Old Guard (uh.. also based on a comic). Both of them feature ancient powers in modern times, are they worth spending time with? Plenty of action and acting to discuss. Of course, our Patron suggested question of the week: What 5 "made up" foods from TV and Movies do you want to try? The answers varied wildly here, and it was a ton of fun to discuss. Today we talk the hilarious David Zucker and Jerry Zucker. With a small side of Jim Abrahams.
This week Brett and Dylan are joined by one of their all time favorite people, Ashley Badostain (Brett's best gal), to talk about the historical romance drama, A Walk In The Clouds. Produced by THE ZUCKER BROTHERS (what?!), and starring an amazing cast, this movie didn't really make much of an impression in 1995, but will Brett, Dylan, and Ashley find anything to fall in love with? Does movie stomp on the grapes of their hearts? Or does it not know any other way to love? Or is it all just a walk... in... the clouds? Kentucky Fried Movie is a flick that not only launched the career of the Zucker Brothers but also film director John Landis. The movie was made in 1977 right before their comedies, Animal House and Airplane, became international sensations. We dive into the origins of Kentucky Fried Movie, what it took to get made, and it’s place in comedy history. Learn more about your ad choices. When it comes to making a title that is indicative of the plot, well this one nails it. Take 33% LA noir detective business, 33% chainsaw murders and 33 1/3% dancing topless hookers and you've got one of Fred Olen Ray's masterpieces. Hard to not love this blast o' laughs. HCH (to save time) is hilarious...and quite intentionally. It's the opinion of this writer that Fred Olen Ray could have easily linked up with the Zucker Brothers and Jim Abrahams. If only he had been involved during Jane Austen's Mafia. It may have not been the turd that it was. There's plenty of slapstick and parody that keep the viewer focused on the jokes more than the huge boobs (which is quite the achievement). Then there's the cast. Wowie. Its a cavalcade of silly performances mixed with killer comedic timing that really take this movie about boobs from a late-night wankfest into a 90% on Rottentomatoes.com. Linnea Quigley, John H. Richardson, Michelle Bauer, and Dukey Flyswatter (Michael Sonye) kill in front of the camera and put on a clinic of how to make a low-budget movie one heck of of a great time. It should also be noted that friend of the program, Christopher Olen Ray, appears as Kid at Bar, who gives the lead quite the snark while enjoying a fancy martini in a dingy "get stabbed" strip joint. Standing ovation. HCH cannot be missed by any fan of the genre and shouldn't be missed by the majority of film fans. It's up there with Hell Comes to Frogtown in low budget and exceptional pieces of art. Bravo Fred.
Yes, indeed, I remain Marc Hershon, your humble host and all-beef luncheon meat for Epi145, the post-Christmas, mid-Hanukah, pre-New Year's installment of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. I hope your holidays are being grand and we appreciate you taking us along during through this winter wonderland. Unless you’re in Australia, like our friends Dean Haglund from the Chillpak Hollywood Hour or Jabs from the DHead Factor, because its summer down under. Is there anything more festive than passing the Succotash for the holidays? I think not. This is an installment of Succotash Clips, where we feature snippets from comedy soundcasts from around the internet. The lion’s share of this epi’s clippage comes from our Associate Producer Tyson Saner. I snagged a couple of 'em, but no one sent any clips in this time. You’re always welcome to, BTW, and it’s so easy – just click on over to http://hightail.com/u/Succotash and you can directly upload your 3-5 minute MP3 or WAV soundcast clips to us. Coming up this show we’ll be featuring samples from the aforementioned Chillpak Hollywood Hour, Just In Time, Obsessed with Joseph Scrimshaw, Office Hours Live with Tim Heidecker, Pepper In The Salt Shaker, Talk It Out, and Tokyo Hotel. In addition we have a double dose of our Burst O’ Durst segment with our resident political comedian and social commentator Will Durst. And this episode, as are they all have been since we started, is Henderson’s Pants, which is bringing back their Auld Lang Slacks just in time for the New Year. CATCH ME/US LIVE IN 2017 A couple of places that I’ll be appearing live coming up in the New Year are both connected to the 16th Annual San Francisco Sketchfest, which takes place every January in the city. Over 400 shows and hundreds of venues across town – it’s a great time to be alive and a fan of comedy. Sunday, January 15th, I’ll be moderating a discussion just before the 40th Anniversary screening of Kentucky Fried Movie. That’ll be live, onstage, at the Castro Theatre with director John Landis, and the producers – the Zucker Brothers and Jim Abraham. A week later, on Sunday, January 22nd, we’ll be doing a live episode of Succotash, on stage at Piano Fight in the Tenderloin. Our booth announcer Bill Heywatt will be there, as well as some comedy soundcasts and comedians as well, for 90 minutes of fun-filled…fun. You can find out all the information including ticket prices and locations by visiting http://SFSketchfest.com. NO ONLINE REVIEWS THIS WEEK Because of the holidays, I have no soundcast reviews on either Splitsider.com or Huffington Post this week. Instead, Splitsider asked me to write up a little piece on my “Best Medicine” to chase away the holiday blues – and that’s the movie Time Bandits! Terry Gilliam, the director, just had the whole thing remastered so it looks great and you can catch it streaming online now. A FEW EXTRA SOUNDCASTS OUT THIS WEEK I appear on a trio of soundcasts that dropped this week, so I thought I would provide you with links here. I am the Narrator for the Casa Mirth Christmas Spectacular, featuring a pile of soundcasters from all over the world. I talk about It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World on the Movies Made Me soundcast with Cheryl Jones. And I talk about trademarks and branding with John Klymshyn on his Your StartUp Advisors soundcast as well. Check 'em out! THE CLIPS Chillpak Hollywood HourOne of the drivers for me starting Succotash in the first place, nigh on 6 years ago, was listening to Chillpak Hollywood Hour, helmed then as it is now by those paragons of soundcast royalty, Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness. They are in the midst of their 10th year and just a couple of weeks ago dropped their 500th episode. To commemorate the event, or maybe it was just to do something different, Dean and Phil took a field trip to the historic Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale – a cemetery of legendary proportions. Here’s a little bit of their meanderings. Just In TimeOur Associate Producer Tyson Saner clipped us off a hunk of the Just In Time soundcast and it’s interesting to note that this is one of those shows that is defined a bit by the fact there isn’t a whole lot of information about the hosts, the show itself of anything else that ‘s available to read online. You definitely have to be a listener to know what’s going on with Just In Time. Tyson could glean that one host is named Rookie or sometimes just “Rook”, and another is DJ. Plus there might be a third voice. It seems there may have even been a fourth host at one time. From SoundCloud Tyson got this description: “Small town comedy podcast. Three broke stoners with a hint of geek discuss everything from movies, comics, sports, random everyday life, and embarrassing personal stories. New Episode every Tuesday.” This clip is from Epi54 this past November 15th, and the episode is entitled “Legal Butt Bush In The Middle of the Bio Dome.” Talk It OutAnother Yuletide harvest from Tyson is from Talk It Out, which proclaims itself to be a “Millennial-focused podcast that is entertaining, educational and, at the same time, controversial.” The hosts are Gabby, KT, Joy, and Tuesday, and our clip is from their episode entitled, “Don’t Save Us; We Don’t Wanna Be Saved” You have to just love how Millennials tend to think they’ve pretty much got a lock on everything…and maybe they do. Obsessed with Joseph ScrimshawI’ve reviewed the soundcast Obsessed with Joseph Scrimshaw several times for Splitsider and I may have featured it here on the show once before. The premise is pretty simple - Joseph basically brings on people to talk about a topic that they tend to obsess over. It’s a little like Jackie Kashian’s Dork Forest in that regard. In one of his most recent drops, Joseph and his guests get into the Beatles and Beck, which gets pretty down into the weeds as his guests are already prone to obsessing over minutiae — they’re Pete the Retailer and Alex Robinson, the hosts of the Star Wars Minute soundcast, where each episode is devoted a single minute of the Star Wars films. Pepper In The Salt ShakerTyson snipped us off a piece of a show that’s only been around since October, called Pepper In The Salt Shaker. I’m used to hearing soundcasts from people who don’t want people they work for or their parents knowing what they’re talking about so only go be first names or nicknames. The two hosts of P in the SS, who describe themselves in show notes on SoundCloud as "two new Hoosier millennial dads” go only by their initial D and AP. They refer to their show as a “hastily edited grab-bag of stories, rants and general dick-headery that will make you laugh, cry, and could quite possible make you shit yourself.” Okay. Talk order. See if this chunk has you scrambling for the Wet Wipes… Office Hours Live with Tim HeideckerIf you’re unfamiliar with Tim Heidecker, you realistically have no one to blame by yourself. He’s a comedian, writer, director, actor and a musician. He’s one half of the comedy team of Tim & Eric, with Eric Wareheim. He’s put together a fistful of TV shows and has been in some movies so, naturally, its time to branch into the bastard world of soundcasting. Office Hours Live with Tim Heidecker is pretty fresh. He just takes Skype calls for an hour and a half from anyone who wants to call and asks him questions about pretty much everything. Tokyo HotelInterview shows and yackfests between three or more people are just find as far as soundcasting goes, but I’ve made no secret of the fact that I really can get onboard with some of the great narrative series that have been cropping up during the past couple of years. Something with structure and stories, y’know? SO I am all over this new soundcast called Tokyo Hotel from the Australian Broadcasting Company. It’s 8 episodes that take place at this rundown but formerly grand Los Angeles hotel. Rather than just pull out a scene, we just let the show’s opening intro set it up for you. Yes, ‘tis I. Marc Hershon — your humble host and seasonal perennial for Epi144 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. This is an installment of Succotash Chats, where we pin down some unlucky wretch from the world of soundcasting and interview the bejeezus out of them. Our Special Guest this episode is Ben Tippett, host of the Titanium Physicists Podcast. I'm only calling it a podcast instead of a soundcast because that’s in the official title of the show. Plus Dr. Tippett insists on the term “podcast”. He’s not a fan of the soundcast moniker. Ben's show is NOT a comedy soundcast in the classic meaning of the term. He is neither a comedian nor is the content overtly intended to be humorous. But, as you will see, he IS funny and the show itself leans heavily that way as well. ALSO ON THE SHOW In addition to our Special Guest Ben Tippet, we have a double dose of our Burst O’ Durst with political comedian and social commentator Will Durst and a dip into the Tweetsack. Plus we have what may be the last song by our old pal Abner Serd for a while — I tell you why towards the end of the show. And, of course, this installment of Succotash Chats is brought to you by our friends at Henderson’s Pants, exclusive makers of Santa Pants. SHAMELESS PLUG If you are going to be in the San Francisco area during January, chances are you will be in shouting distance of the 16th Annual S.F. Sketchfest. And I will be appearing not once but twice during this hallowed affair. On Sunday, January 15th, I will be moderating a panel before the 40th anniversary screening of Kentucky Fried Movie. I was just graduating high school when KFM came out and it was amazing. Bizarre, hilarious, and just great fun with a crazy cast, directed by John Landis, written and produced by the Zucker Brothers and Jim Abraham — the same guys who later brought us the Airplane! movies, the Police Squad TV series, which led directly to the Naked Gun movies. That will be at the Castro Theater in San Francisco. And then a week later, on Sunday, January 22nd, I’ll be bringing Succotash to Sketchfest at 4 PM at Piano Fight in the Tenderloin. We’ll have a live 90-minute show and a great lineup of podcasters and comics. So for both or either of those shows, visit http://SFSketchfest.com to get tickets and further details. JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS If you’re going to be doing any shopping for the holidays by way of Amazon, please do use the Amazon banner at the top of the http://SuccotashShow.com homesite – when you access their site through our site, we get a tasty little morsel of a kickback, and that money helps to cover the production costs of this show. If you’re not in a buying mood, visit out homesite anyway and just click the Donate button. Every penny you donate goes to offset the production costs and upkeep for this soundcast. And that, my friend, is that. Succotash Chats Epi144 is just another piece of soundcast history now. Hopefully we’ll have another installment dropping before Christmas but, just in case we don’t, have a very merry one and don’t forget to pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
On this week's episode of The Arena, its a battle of the spoof film as Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles tries to out-wit, out-joke, and out-funny Jim Abraham and the Zucker Brothers' classic, Airplane! Which film will be crowned the prince of parody? Surely, we'll find out out soon enough. And don't call me Shirley! Hosted by MIko Reyes, Leigh Stiepel, and critically acclaimed human being, David Scherker.
Actor and singer Craig Bierko has appeared in movies ("Cinderella Man," "The Long Kiss Goodnight"), hit TV series ("Damages," "Boston Legal") and Tony-nominated musicals ("The Music Man," "Guys and Dolls") and worked alongside comedy icons like Larry David, Bob Newhart and the Zucker Brothers. Craig stopped by Gilbert's apartment to present Gilbert with a birthday gift, to take a few personal phone calls and to regale Gilbert and Frank with stories and anecdotes featuring everyone from Norman Mailer to Bishop Fulton Sheen. Also, Craig goes toe-to-toe with Russell Crowe, turns down the role of Chandler Bing (!) and takes a bath with John Malkovich. PLUS: Wilford Brimley! David (or Bill) Huddleston! George Harrison sings "Oh! My Pa-Pa"! And the strange death of Parkyakarkus! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Dian Bachar is an actor best known for comedies BASEketball, Cannibal: The Musical and Orgazmo! But now he's on Geekscape to talk about his upcoming project My Neighborhood, for which he is writer, director, lead actor and producer! We talk about trying to make it in Hollywood and working with the legendary Zucker Brothers and Trey Parker and Matt Stone! Kenny schools us on Call of Duty: Advance Warfare, we love Big Hero 6 and lose our minds at the possibility of Ash VS The Evil Dead on TV!
This week we discuss the films of the Zucker brothers, makers of some of the funniest movies of our childhood. I would write more, but I just learned of Robin Williams' death and don't really feel like writing about this. So, here is the video I discussed on the show and my normal wrap up.
