Listening to the Bible: Why Scripture Was Meant to Be Heard (Dru Johnson) Ep. #188

The Biblical Mind

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 20, 2025 17:38

Most of us read the Bible with our eyes—but what if we're missing something essential by not listening to it? In this episode, Dr. Dru Johnson challenges the modern tendency to engage Scripture primarily as a written text, arguing that the Bible was designed to be heard. From the Torah readings of Moses to the public proclamation of Paul's letters, Scripture has always been an aural experience—one meant to be absorbed in community rather than private, silent reading. Dr. Johnson explains why listening changes how we understand Scripture, uncovering literary structures like repetition, parallelism, and chiasms that are far easier to hear than to see. He also explores the cognitive science behind reading vs. listening, showing why oral engagement helps us retain and interpret biblical texts more deeply. Could reclaiming the practice of hearing Scripture together revolutionize the way we experience the Bible? This episode dives into why the church should return to communal listening, what ancient Jewish and Christian traditions teach us, and how modern worship services might be reshaped by putting Scripture at the center—not just as a text to analyze, but as a living word to hear. Ben Bressler, founder and president of Natural Habitat Adventures (NHA), joins the podcast. Ben had the epiphany for what would become NHA as a teacher during a ski trip. Soonafter, he launched the responsible nature travel company in 1985 with a core idea: create life-enhancing travel experiences by taking people to some of the world's most remote places– while also getting as close as possible to the wildlife. Fueled by a passion for travel, nature, and the outdoors, Ben and Natural Habitat Adventures are still finding new ways to enhance their adventures and impact on the environment 38 years later. NHA, the conservation travel partner of the World Wildlife Fund, was the first 100% carbon-neutral travel company. But who better to tell the full story than Ben himself?Whether it's a close-up encounter with polar bears, talking about the restorative power of nature, or how to launch and lead a company for almost 4 decades (and still going), this episode has something for everyone. The Backyard Naturalists

The Backyard Naturalist is a podcast about anything and everything related to nature. This week, Debbie and Laurie have a conversation around some of the weird and off the wall myths about birds they've heard lately. Some of which include, is the phrase “bird brain” really an insult? How about does touching a baby bird really cause the mother to abandon it and, are birds monogamous?   We'd like to give a shout out to one of our loyal listeners, Craig. He offered the idea for this week's show and even performed a little of the research. To thank Craig, we're giving hi a free Squirrel Buster Bird Feeder from Brome. If you have an idea for an upcoming episode, hit us up on our Facebook page or leave a comment at thebackyardnaturalists.com.   During the show, you hear Debbie mention a wonderful read, The Genius of Birds by Jennifer Ackerman.   Connect with the Backyard Naturalists on the Web, Facebook and Instagram.   Please visit and support our presenting sponsor, Backyard Birds at http://www.thebirdfoodstore.com/. A mecca for bird lovers and bird watchers, Backyard Birds is an independent family-owned business located in Matthews, NC (next to Dairy Queen), just southeast of Charlotte.   Thanks for listening to The Backyard Naturalists.  We hope you have a day filled with the wonders of nature. Get outside and take a walk on the wild side! We live in a world where most people believe in some form of a God, but more often than not, people do not view God as personal or in a relationship with us. This sermon explores why it is logical to say both that God exists and is personal, and then it examines the importance of cultivating this personal interaction with God.

Someone Dies In This Elevator

Someone Dies In This Elevator is now crowdfunding season two! If you've been enjoying it show, it would mean the world to me if you can spare a few bucks to help us make it. As thanks for supporting the show, you can get a bunch of cool perks, including early episode access, show stickers, and my personal favorite - a two page ttrpg game about dying in elevators! Go to bit.ly/sdite to help pay our cast and crew. The voice of the narrator was Josh Rubino. This sketch was written and produced by Tal Minear. Transcript: Elevators. One of the deadliest creatures known to man, notable in part for their 100% fatality rate on hit podcast Someone Dies In This Elevator. Today we're taking a closer look at them. [BEAT] But not that close. Elevators are remarkable contraptions intended for raising and lowering things to different floors or levels. But as you and both I know, they hunger for violence, lying in wait for unsuspecting passengers that soon will become their victims.  Little is known about how these elevators hunt, save for the fact that no two seem to kill in the same way. Scientists speculate that this may be an intentional tactic to prevent their prey from forming defensive measures. Should you encounter an elevator in the wild, your best option is to remove yourself from the situation. Do not attempt to fight the elevator.  Here we see an elevator in its natural habitat. A passenger approaches. Oh. Oh no. What are you doing? Get away from there. No, come on, don't do that. I- I can't watch this. Turn it off. Turn it off! The Memory Palace is a member of Radiotopia from PRX. This episode was originally released in July of 2016. It's being re-released today because Nate's on book leave for the summer and because it's a total banger. Notes and Reading: * I came to this story the old fashioned way (for me): I saw Su Lin at the Field Museum and needed to know more. That led me inevitably to Vicki Croke's The Lady and the Panda from 2006. It's a terrific read. If you have any interest at all in learning more about Ruth Harkness, that's the place to go. I've got a few quibbles here and there, but, for real, it's delightful. * Quentin Young's (slightly strange and contested) version of events is told in Chasing the Panda by Michael Kiefer. * If you've got a few hundred bucks (or a library with more liberal lending policies with old books than mine), why not read Ruth's own book, The Baby Giant Panda? * If you're interested in zoos writ large, I'm a fan of Animal Attractions: Nature on Display in American Zoos by Elizabeth Hansen. Music: * We start with Hush-Maker by Moon Ate the Dark. * Roll on with Freudian Slippers by Chilly Gonzales. * Hear Bibio's Cherry Blossom Road a couple of times. * Hit up Nice Dream by radio.string.quartet.vienna * Hear Don Redman and his Orchestra play Blue Eyed Baby from Memphis. * The centerpiece of the middle section is Snow Again by Lambert. * We hear a couple of pieces by Dan Romer: An Old Fashioned Man and End of the World. * We finish up on Lullatone's Falling Asleep With a Book on Your Chest.

In April of 2022, the design-forward home scenting company, vitruvi, made a bold move that shocked their followers; they archived their entire Instagram feed, leaving up only a 3-grid with the phrase, “change is in the air.” Their followers guessed new packaging or the introduction of a brand color, but vitruvi took it a few steps further with an entire rebrand, launched in one day. The rebrand was impossible to ignore on social media, with posts from their 250+ affiliates sporting their new signature “Homebody” sweatshirt going live on the feed. A move that had been two years in the making, vitruvi saw a 50% increase in social media engagement following the launch. For episode 53, we're sitting down with vitruvi's Senior Brand Marketing Manager, Scout Shmygol, to dive deeper into the rebrand.
