Episode SummaryIn this episode of the History Rage podcast, Calder Walton, author of "Spies: The Epic Intelligence War Between East and West," joins Paul to delve into the historical context of Russian election interference. Key Topics:1. Henry Wallace's Third-Party Bid: Wallace's failed third-party bid in the 1948 election, orchestrated with Stalin's input, reveals early attempts at election interference. Despite meticulous planning, Wallace's campaign imploded.2. KGB Operations in the 1984 Election: The KGB's attempts to influence the 1984 U.S. presidential election involved recruiting agents and organizing demonstrations outside the Democratic National Convention. The strategy echoed tactics seen in the 2016 election but lacked the amplification capabilities of today's social media.3. Soviet Exploitation of British Intelligence: The recruitment of the Cambridge spies, including Kim Philby, exposed a significant security failure in British intelligence. Soviet intelligence successfully targeted individuals from elite backgrounds who were least likely to be suspected as communist sympathizers.4. Oleg Gordievsky's Espionage Feat: Gordievsky's remarkable role as a double agent within the KGB and head of station in London allowed him to brief both sides during crucial diplomatic negotiations. His dramatic escape from Moscow adds a cinematic touch to the espionage narrative.5. Putin's KGB Mythology: The discussion dispels myths surrounding Vladimir Putin's KGB career, highlighting its mediocrity. Putin's attempts to project an image of deep cover illegals and elite intelligence involvement are debunked.6. Western Covert Action During the Cold War: Efforts to destabilize the Soviet bloc during the Cold War, often through covert actions, faced internal sabotage and operational shortcomings. The asymmetry between open democracies and authoritarian states affected the effectiveness of these operations.Recommendations and Resources:· Calder Walton's book: "Spies: The Epic Intelligence War Between East and West"· Texas National Security Review article by Calder Walton: "What's Old is New Again: Russian Disinformation and the 'Active Measures' Campaign"· Follow Calder Walton on Twitter: @calder_waltonYou can follow History Rage on Twitter @HistoryRage or Paul individually @PaulBavill and let us know what you wish people would just stop believing using the Hashtag #HistoryRage. The first of two episodes with Dr Calder Walton. This one looks at the development of the intelligence war between the West and the Soviet Union from 1917, follows the story through the fulcrum period of the Second World War and pushes on into the intense espionage games of the Cold War. Based at Harvard's Kennedy Business School, Calder Walton is one of the world's leading experts on intelligence and national security. We talk about Marx, the Great Illegals and the Cambridge Five. We talk about a US administration which was riddled with spies. How did intelligence affect the Cold War? How crucial was Oleg Gordievsky? Next time, we will be talking about espionage, Russia and the West, beyond the Cold War. The conversation is an insight into Calder's brilliant, bestselling book. Just out in paperback, SPIES: The epic intelligence war between East and West, is a masterful and comprehensive look at the incredible story of Soviet and Western espionage. The West, Calder argues, has a long term Russia problem. Christopher Andrew called it 'a masterpiece'. Buy Calder's book: https://amzn.eu/d/08N5KXb Learn more about your ad choices.

Oleg Gordievsky was the best asset that MI6 planted in the Soviet intelligence echelons, who risked his life providing key information to the West. Aldrich Ames is the CIA agent that "sold" Gordievsky to the Russians, in exchange for large sums of money. We move onto current spy stories and spycraft, questioning its current scope and players. What makes a Londoner, a Londoner?  What constitutes identity? These are two of the many essential questions that we continue to explore in this harrowing conclusion to our story about Oleg Gordievsky, a KGB colonel turned MI6 agent, the second episode in a three-part arc exploring espionage in and around Great Britain. We'll question what motivates Gordievsky to continue to spy for England rather than defect to London when his life is at stake, and examine how his choices greatly affected both his personal life and the world at-large.We will study:Gordievsky as a double agent working for MI6 within the Soviet Rezidentura, first in Copenhagen, then in London his contributions to Western securityhis purely ideological motivation MI6 and their plan to protect and exfiltrate their prized spy, if necessary the impact and aftermath of Oleg's decisions on his personal life and that of his familythe complicated relationships between allied intelligence agencies the despicable traitor who sacrificed Gordievsky for his own personal gainWhy does a man who has already given another country everything he has keep going when he knows his life is in mortal peril? You won't want to miss this incredible story of dedication, heroism, and ultimate betrayal. NOTE OF APOLOGY: While editing, Jen discovered a regrettable mistake of tongue, and she deeply regrets unintentionally referring to Ukraine as “The Ukraine” twice in this episode. This unfortunate error was the result of an old habit learned during Cold War era grade school social studies classes, and she is dedicated to removing that phrasing from her vernacular. She absolutely recognizes Ukraine as an independent nation and not as a region within Russia. As such, she would like to extend  a sincere apology for the error. YLT firmly supports Ukraine and its people!

What makes a Londoner, a Londoner? Is it exclusively by birth? Does one achieve the status after residing there a certain number of years? After working there for a period of time? After studying there or completing a course of study? It is hard to define; it is an identity, and it's problematic to dictate parameters of identity to anyone else, or to assign an identity to another person.  The issue of identity becomes especially murky when one takes a peak into the world of espionage and treachery. In this episode, the first of a three-part arc focusing on espionage and intrigue, we will meet Oleg Gordievsky, a KGB Colonel turned British spy. We'll learn about what motivated him to turn against the country of his birth, and explore the events that inspired the unique trajectory of his life. We'll view Gordievsky:·        as a young university student witnessing the rise of the Berlin Wall, ·        as a conflicted young adult appalled by the atrocities of the government of his homeland and of his employer, the KGB,·        as a lover and advocate of fine culture,·        as a KGB officer abroad exploring the capitalistic fruits of the West in Copenhagen,·        as a unique man who becomes a double agent for purely ideological reasons. How did a man born thousands of miles outside of the city become a true Londoner before ever breathing British air?   Let's dig more deeply into the intense and inspiring life of Oleg Gordievsky together. Martha Kearney reviews today's release of secret government files from the mid 1980s. The year long miners' strike came to an end in 1985, but social unrest continued with riots in London leaving a policeman dead in Tottenham. Football hooliganism burgeoned, resulting in horrific scenes at the European Cup Final in Heysel when 39 people died during violent riots before the Liverpool/Juventus match. Mikhail Gorbachev became Soviet leader and Oleg Gordievsky was one of a number of high profile Russian defectors to Britain. As nuclear arms talks between the Soviet Union and the United States made a tentative start, a catastrophic accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine released radioactive particles over much of the Western USSR. A row in Cabinet over the future of Westland helicopters resulted in Michael Heseltine's resignation as Defence Secretary in early 1986. A Cabinet Committee considered government policy on AIDS for the first time, and several Whitehall departments collaborated to develop what became the 'Poll Tax'. As the official Cabinet papers of the mid-80s are opened to the public for the first time, Martha Kearney discovers how these events were viewed in Government. With access to the Prime Minister's personal correspondence, minutes of top secret meetings and telephone calls, and confidential policy advice, UK Confidential offers fresh insights into history. Martha is joined in the studio by key political players from the time - Defence Secretary Lord (Michael) Heseltine, Shadow Chancellor Lord (Roy) Hattersley, Margaret Thatcher's private secretary Lord (Charles) Powell, and Channel 4 Political Correspondent Elinor Goodman. Kirsty Young's castaway this week is Oleg Gordievsky. He is the highest-ranking KGB officer ever to become a spy for the British. The insights he gave into the Soviet hierarchy and culture over the course of 10 years were so significant that, according to some, he did more than any other individual in the West to hasten the demise of the communist regime. A bright pupil with an aptitude for languages, he joined the KGB's diplomatic corps thinking it would allow him to travel and fulfil his interest in politics. But he was first enchanted by the liberty enjoyed in the West and then so horrified by the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia that he started to feed information to MI6.He risked his life for a decade, but in 1985 he was recalled to Moscow - his cover had been blown and he realised he had just weeks to live. An incredible escape plan was activated and, after shaking off the KGB surveillance teams that followed him everywhere, he escaped by tram, train and bus to the border with Finland - where British agents bundled him into the boot of a car and carried him to freedom. Now, his life is in Britain - he has married a British woman and his courage has been recognised through the honours system.
