Josephine Baran is currently the Director of Outward Bound Canada's Training Academy for Outdoor Professionals which is seeking to create access and training opportunities for groups that have been traditionally under-represented in the outdoor industry. She fell in love with Canada's natural spaces when she moved here as a teenager and firmly believes we are the best version of ourselves when we are outdoors. She led the National Community team for Mountain Equipment Co-op which had the largest series of races in Canada and is happiest when she is running the trails with her dogs, paddling at her cabin in Northern Ontario or snowboarding in the Rockies. About the Training Academy The Training Academy has two levels of fully funded programming, that we are able to offer at no cost to our participants; the Foundations and Essentials level. Foundations offers 6 days of workshops with a strong focus on growing outdoor technical skills and building comfort in the outdoors. There is a 5 day outdoor journey option also. It truly is about creating access for groups and communities that have been traditionally under-represented. The Essentials program offers 10 days of workshops that focuses on a broad range of topics like mental health first aid, trauma informed outdoor leadership and more. It also provides four days of technical training at a basecamp workshop and a ten day outdoor journey. This level readies participants to enter the outdoor industry with the skills to work with the diverse and evolving needs of our population. Ingrid Backstrom has been a professional skier for over twenty years and is a household name and someone widely considered a “legend” in the world of free skiing. She is also a mother, a filmmaker, and co-founder of S.A.F.E. A.S. backcountry clinics. In this conversation we discuss Ingrid's professional skiing career and her journey as a woman in a male-dominated sport. We also talk about her work to make skiing more fun and inclusive, how she has learned from mistakes along the way, and how you don't have to be a mom to “ski like a mother.” We first connected with Ingrid around “The Approach” film, a project she's been helping lead for the past three years. We talk about the joy of seeing others learn to love a new passion, learning to look a life from a different perspective and making mistakes along the way, how to interrupt an entrenched industry - even as an underdog, what she's learned in her 20 years of being a pro-skier and much more. Our "debrief" this episode is a conversation between host Faith Briggs Rose and her mother, Hope Briggs. Faith asks her mom about what it's been like to be a white woman navigating racial awareness, based on being in an interracial marriage for almost 40 years, especially coming from a sheltered background. It's a challenging, illuminating and raw conversation. Follow along and learn more about Ingrid on Instagram via https://www.instagram.com/ingridbackstrom/

It takes you to the source of our innately human relationship with water and weaves together history, science, and her own personal story to propel us on the journey. We wanted to start this Women and Water series with my conversation with Bonnie because she is truly an expert on why we gravitate to the ocean, lakes, and other waterways that provide us with so much. Bonnie shares more about Why We Swim, her own start to swimming, how swimming helps us feel free, and so much more. This is the first in a series of interviews with some incredible humans who are featured in Women and Water - a new book from the team behind She Explores. The Deem File Conference Championships Won at Miami: 17 All-Americans Coached at Miami: 193 National Champions Coached at Miami: 15 In her 32 seasons at the University of Miami, Amy Deem has shaped the Hurricanes into a national force that has produced an impressive roster of All-Americans, conference champions, national champions and Olympians. A native of Parkersburg, West Virginia and graduate of Ohio University, Deem first came to Miami in 1988 as an intern in the compliance department. During her internship, she served as a volunteer assistant coach with the track & field team. She hasn't left Coral Gables since. In the spring of 1990, Deem was named Miami's women's track & field coach. Before her hire, no Hurricane had ever recorded an NCAA qualifying mark. Entering the 2022-23 season, 92 student-athletes have earned 193 All-American marks. Deem was promoted to her current position as Miami's Director of Track & Field/Cross Country in 2008 and became, at the time, just the sixth woman to oversee both the men's and women's track & field and cross country programs at a Division I school. Since Deem's arrival, the Hurricanes have won a combined 17 conference championships in the Big East and Atlantic Coast Conference. The most recent came in 2022 when Miami's women's team – led by All-American thrower Debbie Ajagbe – won the ACC outdoor championship. It was the Hurricanes' fourth such title following wins in 2005, 2006 and 2018. Deem was named the ACC's Outdoor Women's Track & Field Coach of the Year after the 2022 season, earning the distinction for the fourth time in her illustrious career. It was her eighth overall ACC coaching honor. Under Deem's guidance, the Miami women have also won five ACC indoor championships (2005, 2006, 2016, 2017, 2019), six Big East outdoor championships (1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004), and two Big East indoor titles (2003, 2004). Deem has also coached 15 of Miami's 17 individual national champions, including hurdler Gillian Russell, who won five national titles between 1992 and 1995, and thrower Kimberli Barrett, who won two national championships in 2005. Miami's most recent national championship came in 2019 when Michelle Atherley won the indoor pentathlon title. While the Hurricanes have become a fixture at the NCAA Championships during Deem's tenure at Miami, her success isn't limited to the college arena. She has coached 10 Miami student-athletes who became Olympians, including Lauryn Williams, the first American woman to medal at both the Summer and Winter Games. Williams, a national champion hurdler for the Hurricanes, was a silver medalist in the 100-meters at the 2004 Athens Games and a gold medalist as part of the 4×100 relay team in London in 2012. Six months after retiring from track in 2013, Williams pursued a new sport: bobsledding. She went on to win a silver medal at the Sochi Winter Games, along with fellow American Elana Meyers-Taylor. Deem herself was a part of the U.S. Olympic Team in 2012, serving as the head coach for the women's national team at the London Games. The U.S. women won 14 medals in those Games and a year later, Deem again led Team USA at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow. She was also the head coach of the U.S. National Team at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, Japan, and served as President of the United States Track Coaches Association from 2003-2005. In 2002, Deem was honored as the United States Olympic Committee Developmental Coach of the Year for Track & Field and has been honored four times as the USTCA South District Coach of the Year. She also served as the Event Coordinator for Sprints and Hurdles for the USA Track & Field Coaches Education Program from 1998-2000 and in 2001, was the head coach of the USATF Junior National Team that competed in England and Scotland. In 2003, she served as the sprints and hurdles coach for the United States at the Pan American Games. Deem, who is a certified USA Track & Field Level III coach and instructor, was inducted into the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2017 and the UM Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. She has coached 19 ACC yearly award winners and 132 of her student-athletes have been recognized as All-ACC Academic Team selections. We all have something to give when it comes to making the outdoors more inclusive and accessible for all. But we don’t have to reinvent the wheel, we can reach out and support existing organizations. In this episode, created in partnership with Sierra Designs, learn about four incredible nonprofits doing the work to help create more opportunities in the outdoors for People of Color, LGBTQ+, disabled, and low income families. But more than simply learning about the work that others are doing, our hope is that this episode will help you think about how you can do to make “reaching out” a practice in your own outdoor lives. We love finding inspiration in the outdoors. Nothing gets us out of a creative rut like a change of scenery: it helps provide a new perspective, a fresh way of looking at the world. Amidst the stress of the pandemic, it’s been more challenging to carve out the headspace that gives flight to those seemingly easy ideas. So for the last episode of Navigating Through, we wanted to talk with three women about how this last year has helped and hindered their creative practices—as well as the ways in which exploring locally can shine new light on the familiar. Hear from photographers and artists Eunice Beck, Anna Brones, and Gritchelle Fallesgon.About the series: This special She Explores miniseries is made in collaboration with Subaru. The last year has been marked by loss and longing, but it hasn't dampened our sense of adventure or our tendency to dream: of far off places, of time in movement with loved ones. Oh my gosh, I had too much fun with this one...I can’t help it, when I meet someone who gets as fired up as I do to talk about OTHER cool women, and she tells great stories, and then you throw some snowmobiling into the mix, I basically lose my sh*t.My guest today is Debi Gould, the brains and energy and branding genius behind Outdoor Women.Debi seems hell-bent on avoiding the spotlight, but her own story is fascinating - she’s part of a long family legacy of guides, sporting camp owners, sportsmen AND women. And since 2019, she’s been the committed brand builder and creator of OutdoorWomen.online. Outdoor Women curates stories of - wait for it - outdoor women from across the country, and crafts creative collaborations with large national brands that directly benefit women wanting to get outdoors, while also supporting local, mostly rural small businesses. As we talk about in this interview, one of the inspirations for Debi when she was creating Outdoor Women was her mom, who enjoyed nothing more than bringing people together around the dining room table after a long day outdoors, to share stories and tall tales, and to pump each other up and create a supportive environment for everyone, from beginners and weekend warriors to professional guides. We do some goofing around about our 'Judy Camuso Fan Club', but what really links us is our shared awe and appreciation for women getting at it in the outdoors, and our desire to amplify those voices and promote those stories in any way we can.I hope you’ll join me in becoming a member of Outdoor Women if you can, and follow Outdoor Women on their website. Whether you decide to become a member or not, you can see all kinds of beautiful imagery and features from the OW staff and ambassadors on Instagram and Facebook as well. And who knows, maybe some of you wild guide types will decide to send in your own stories and pictures and be the next superstar outdoorswoman that Debi’s team features, and then I can look forward to meeting YOU when you’re leading the next 'Brap and Snap' or 'Power and Paddle'!A few more links from my conversation with Debi:Wilson Pond Cabins (Greenville, ME)Spencer Pond Camps (Moosehead Lake Region)DSG ApparelLeave No Trace Awareness Workshop with Nancy Zane (June 6th)And don't forget to RSVP today for our upcoming live Q & A event on Zoom - 'So You Think You Want to be a Guide?' - April 29th, 7pm Eastern - we've got a fantastic panel of new guides on the hook to spill the tea (sorry, mom of a middle schooler over here) about what it's like becoming a guide, taking a licensing exam, bringing your first group out onto the trail or  water... anything you're curious about is fair game during this live question and answer session! In the fourth episode of Where We Walk, we hear from Brittany and Laura, two women who share a longing and a love for the Appalachian Trail. Brittany fulfilled her goal of thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2019, despite facing the devastating loss of her husband a few years prior. Laura dreams of hiking the Trail, but forces outside of her control have kept her from doing it. There’s a lot of talk about the universal nature of the Appalachian Trail. And there are a lot of aspects of a thru hike that unites a trail community. But the individuals that hike the A.T. bring their full, unique, selves to the trail. Laura and Brittany are different: in upbringing, in background, in temperament. Laura’s Latina, she and her parents immigrated from Colombia to Georgia when she was six years old. Brittany’s white and grew up in North Dakota. But they have something in common that’s core to what attracts them to the Trail: a need, at a particular point in their lives, to do something entirely for themselves. This episode is for anyone who dreams of hiking the Trail, or who loves living vicariously through others’ thru-hiking stories. About the series: This story-forward six-part series, in partnership with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and made possible with support from REI, highlights the Appalachian Trail through both the women who helped to build it as well as those who continue to make it what it is today. Our goal is to tell a multi-dimensional story of the Trail through a range of voices from diverse backgrounds. Each episode will have a unique theme that helps tell the story of the way we shape the Trail, but more importantly — how the Trail shapes us. Featured in this episode: Laura Alarcon & Brittany CominsHosted by Gale Straub, with Laura BorichevksyA Production of Ravel MediaResources:Appalachian Trail ConservancyAppalachian Trail Conservancy: Thru-HikingThe interviewees:Brittany Comins: Instagram @FlickerTailonTrailLaura Alarcon: Laura isn't on social media, but if you listen to the episode and her story resonates, feel free to reach out via email - lau.a.arcon@gmail.comEpisodes of “Where We Walk” will air weekly on Mondays.Music by Josh Woodward & Monplaisir using a Creative Commons Attribution License

Leaning into the Unknown: Chris Fagan

Chris Fagan isn't a professional adventurer, but she’s spent a good deal of the leisure time in the last 30 years of her adult life seeing what she’s made of. Chris has skied unguided to the South Pole, run 100-mile ultras, sailed and paddled thought the Inside Passage, and cycled in Tanzania. Adventure is a big part of her alone time, but it’s also formed the foundation of her marriage and family life. Today, it's helping her lean into the unknown of her husband Marty's cancer diagnosis. Chris is also a really thoughtful mom. And though Mother’s Day is a holiday that many of us have our reasons for choosing to celebrate or choosing not to celebrate, what Chris says about caring for family really resonates, especially living during this global pandemic. We recommend listening to this conversation through a COVID-19 filter: what Chris says about small moments, resilience, and appreciating the people in your life feels especially poignant today.Featured in this episode: Chris FaganHosted by Gale StraubA production of Ravel MediaSponsored by Salomon and DeuterJoin the She Explores Podcast community on FacebookVisit She-Explores.com & Follow Us on InstagramResourcesChris Fagan: Website & InstagramChris's Book: The ExpeditionShe Explores Landing PageRavel MediaSponsors and Discount CodesSalomon: Learn more at Salomon.comDeuter: Learn more at Deuter.comFeatured in midroll: Nicole Brown, founder of @womenwhohikeEpisodes air weekly on Wednesdays-- subscribe wherever you listen so you never miss an episode.

As you may know, I reserve my solocasts for topics which have been nothing short of monumental in my journey as an outdoor founder. So this week, I'm talking with all of you about something that, having started two companies and been in the outdoor industries for fifteen years, I had never done up until a few weeks ago. What I'm talking about is . . . writing a pitch deck! In just a few weeks, I'll be presenting at the Outdoor Women's Industry Coalition Pitchfest. I'm super honored to have been selected to be one of this year's presenters, but it's a new and challenging experience for me. In preparing my own pitch deck for the event, I learned so much about building and rehearsing pitch decks and I'm excited to share this process with you. When I sat down to write my pitch, I had to really get to the nitty gritty and evaluate what my company needed, what I wanted to get from this experience. I had to know, specifically what my ask was. And then, I started reading about how to give an awesome pitch. In my solocast, I'm talking about the two most helpful resources to me in preparing this pitch deck, and the hard editing process I've been working through to get it just right. I'm also sharing some of the negative thoughts I'm refusing to believe about my pitch, and three steps for building an amazing pitch.   This pitch deck has been such a learning experience for me and for developing how I think about the needs of my company. I've never done one before, but I'm choosing to see this an asset, not a liability. If you don't know what can't be done, there's nothing to stop you. I hope you'll learn from my process and the resources I'm sharing. This episode is a must listen for anyone looking to pitch or promote their ideas!  Bravery in Business Quote “Well, the way I look at that is I've never done this before and that's actually my biggest advantage. Because what I don't know won't hurt me, right?” - Kristin Carpenter Ogden (Click to tweet) Cliff Notes Entrepreneurs should pitch a story, not just figures and facts. Struggled with two limiting ideas about writing this pitch. She refused to believe them, but they're still inside her head all the time. She didn't have enough time to write a good pitch deck. Only had six weeks from the time she found out she got in to the presentation. The pitch is only five minutes long. She is “incredibly verbose” so 5 minutes is a real challenge. Started telling herself that not having done this before was an advantage. Because she doesn't have the experience to know that it can't be done in 5 minutes, she's going for it. Rehearse your pitch in front of a variety of people to figure out what the different reactions are, and what engages each audience Edit out everything that isn't causing an emotional reaction. Even pitching financials, she tried to frame them in terms of a story, hot cognition. When giving the pitch, stay present because this will keep you confident. Confidence also comes from being well prepared.   3 Tips for Building a Pitch Deck        Focus on “hot cognition”, i.e. stories that will spark emotion (from Klaff).     Confidence creates flow. Be Confident.     Remember that you are just the vessel for the mission of the project. “I have two children in real life and I have two children in my business is I guess you'll love them both very much, not one over the other. They're very different.” (Click to tweet) Resources OIWC.org IntrepidEntrepreneur.net PitchAnything.com                                                                                     GetBacked.com Questions@IntrepidEntrepreneur.net   Show Notes: IntrepidEntrepreneur.net/pitchdeck
