From age 12, Elle Steele knew she wanted to become a Paralympian. Even better, she knew she wanted to become a Paralympic Gold medallist. At just 17 years old she achieved that dream, representing Australia at the Sydney 2000 Games, and breaking the 400 metres freestyle record on the way. After retiring from swimming, she made the switch to Wheelchair Rugby and became the first female to represent Victoria in the sport. But when injury stopped her competing from sport altogether, neurolinguistics gave her a new lease on life. Elle quickly learnt the power that language can have on one's perception of disability, but also one's sense of self. Now she works as the aptly titled ‘Self Belief Agent', helping others to unlock their potential. This chat demonstrates the power of positivity and self belief and we hope you enjoy it. "The most pivotal moment of my life was when my doctor sat me down as kind of an exit interview from the hospital… He said, ‘Nate, you're never going to walk without a limp, competitive sports are not in your future, and you're not going to graduate high school. I still get a tingling sensation all over my body just saying it. For me, I could take this one road that's pretty flat and I won't fail a lot and I'll just listen to him. Or I could take this winding road and I could fail a whole lot. A lot of tears were shed, for sure, but I could end up on top of the podium at the Paralympic Games, or I could achieve something that I'd always dreamed of. I was always a really big dreamer, so I decided to take that route. I got out of the hospital on Sunday and went to school on Monday. It was almost like a new life." Nate Riech won gold in the T38 category for the 1500m at his first Paralympic Games in Tokyo and is now back to defend his title. He is also an Asics-sponsored pro athlete and won the gold medal at last year's World Para Athletics Championships in Paris. In this episode, he shares his career story including the story of when he was 10 years old and an accident on a golf course changed the trajectory of his life. He was diagnosed with a brain injury that affected the right side of his body. He comes from a super athletic family that includes NHL players and Olympians, which only motivated him even more to set out and write his own legacy in the Paralympic movement. He also shares his hopes for carrying the momentum from the Olympic Games to the Paralympics. In this episode of the Connected Leadership podcast Olympic mini-series, Andy Lopata welcomes Aaron Phipps, MBE. Aaron is a Great Britain wheelchair rugby athlete and Paralympic gold medalist. After losing his legs and most of his fingers to meningitis at age 15, Aaron began his athletic journey with a 10-kilometre fundraising wheelchair race. He competed in two London Marathons, finishing fourth in 2009. Joining the GB Wheelchair Rugby squad, he scored over half of his team's points at the 2012 London Paralympics. In 2016, Aaron climbed Mount Kilimanjaro using a specially adapted off-road wheelchair to raise funds for the Meningitis Research Foundation and the Shaw Trust. Aaron shares his experiences with the Paralympic Games, describing the intense anticipation leading up to the event and the feeling of reality setting in as the games begin. He compares the build-up to a giant island looming on the horizon, with athletes approaching it in their "little boats." Aaron explains how athletes reach peak fitness and then focus on rest and recovery in the weeks leading up to the games. He highlights the importance of managing energy levels and avoiding injuries during this crucial time. Aaron recounts his life-changing experience with meningococcal septicaemia at the age of 15, detailing the rapid progression of the illness and the resulting amputations. He emphasises the importance of resilience and the critical role played by medical professionals in his recovery. Recovering from the amputations and a year in hospital, Aaron acknowledges the challenges of feeling self-conscious and navigating social interactions. But he emphasises the support of his parents and friends in helping him adapt and live a normal life. His illness had a great impact on his outlook on life. He acknowledges that nearly dying gave him a profound perspective on mortality and made him more appreciative of the simple things in life. He highlights the importance of gratitude and positivity in overcoming challenges. Andy and Aaron discuss his journey into wheelchair rugby, which he describes as a "real leveller" and a transformative experience. He recounts how seeing other athletes with even more severe disabilities inspired him to push his own limits and embrace his potential. Aaron emphasises the importance of giving back to others and using his platform to inspire those facing similar challenges. He shares stories about mentoring young athletes and connecting with people who have been impacted by life-changing illnesses. Aaron credits the London 2012 Paralympics with shifting public perceptions of disability. He highlights the impact of Channel 4's "Superhumans" campaign and the satirical comedy show "The Last Leg" on normalising disability and promoting inclusivity. Aaron concludes by encouraging listeners to step outside their comfort zones and embrace new challenges. He emphasises the importance of living life to the fullest and creating lasting memories. Nuala McGovern is joined by two women who were there at the time – Lisa McKenzie and Heather Wood – to share their experiences. Violence and abuse against shop workers rose to 1,300 incidents a day last year. That's according to new figures from the British Retail Consortium. Nuala hears from Michele Whitehead, a workplace rep for the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers, on what it's like for her. Four years ago, Avon and Somerset Police offered Channel 4 unprecedented access to its Counter Corruption Unit, the people who police the police. Erin is the Paralympic gold champion, two time world champion, three time European champion and world cup winner and she is the first Cox to ever hold these 4 titles at any one time. Four days after her cancer diagnosis she won a gold medal at the World Cup and then a few months later she coxed the crew to victory in the 2022 European Championships – part way through chemotherapy. David Kiley, aka DK, began his love affair with basketball straight out of the womb. Raised in Costa Mesa in SoCal, DK played the sport from morning to evening on the hoop his dad hung from the garage roof or on any outdoor court that he could walk or ride his bike to. Playing and practicing solo and alone was a habit he enjoyed and while dreaming of the time he'd possibly be playing at UCLA or being a pro with the Lakers. However, spinal cord injury rocked his world at this time while he was inner tubing in Southern California mountains at Big Bear. Devastated, DK entered rehabilitation at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital, in Downey, CA. What would follow over the years would be playing for the USA in four different decades winning 9 Paralympic Gold Medals, 2 Silvers and 2 Bronze in three different sports i.e. Basketball, Track and Alpine Skiing. 8 NWBA National Championships and 6 MVPs (the most won by a player) World Championships and much more that will be left unsaid. David Kiley was also the first wheelchair athlete to appear in Sports Illustrated and to his joy, he was pictured with his two children Justin and Danielle. Married to a loving and supportive wife, Sandy, DK is now a grandfather, a role he embraces like no other and feels "life couldn't get any better."
James Brown is an athlete, inventor, social entrepreneur, multi-Paralympian gold medal winner - and climate activist. There was a time when James was known most for his astonishing achievements across many sports. Between 1980 and 2015, he took part in no less than five Paralympic Games (winter and summer) as well as eighteen World Championship events. His range of disciplines was extraordinary: they included track running, cross-country skiing, triathlon, swimming, road/track cycling and guide-running. He has several Paralympic Gold medals, was holder of the 800m World Record for eight years and has three other World Firsts to his name, including being the first registered blind person to compete in a World Track Masters cycling event at the velodrome in Manchester. In 2018, everything changed for James when his daughter - then at university - broke down in front of him in a cafe in Exeter and explained all she had been reading about the climate and ecological emergency. James wept with her, but she offered hope in the shape of the newly formed Extinction Rebellion, and the possibility that non-violent direct action might help foment change. James committed to being at her side in whatever actions she took and within weeks, they were walking arm in arm to the blocking of the five bridges that were the first London Extinction Rebellion action. Since then, James has been arrested 13 times for his non-violent actions (once for spraying chalk paint on the road outside DEFRA in Bristol where it was raining so hard the chalk was washing off as they sprayed it one and was gone long before the arrest process was complete). Most recently, he spent two and a half months in Wandsworth prison for the action that propelled him to climate-activist super-stardom - when he climbed onto a plane at City Airport and superglued himself to the top. The Facebook Live video that he recorded at the time has gone viral and James received thousands of letters and emails while he was in prison, from people who felt desperate about the climate emergency and wanted to know how to find the same courage. So this is what we explore in today's episode - courage and agency and activism in an age of total transformation. What can we do, and how can we find the courage to take the action we know the world needs? James Brown Website: https://jamesbrownparalympian.co.uk
“Opportunity is a Matter of Perspective” (ft. Zion Clark, Speaker, Athlete & Author of Zion Unmatched)Multiplying your potential when life tries to subtract your possibilitiesOPENING QUOTE:“Part of growing is accepting what life is in that moment, and still pushing forward anyway. I accepted that my life was crappy, shitty, just not very desirable at all. But at the same time I was like, 'Well, whatever happens happens. I'm just going to keep trying my best every day.'”- Zion ClarkGUEST BIO:Zion Clark was born with a rare birth defect called Caudal Regression Syndrome, causing him to be born without legs. He was given up by his mother at birth, and Zion spent 17 years in foster care moving between nine different homes that saw him experience everything from lack of support to all-out abuse. Six months before aging out of the foster system, he was adopted by his now-mother who changed his life forever. He went on to become an elite wheelchair racer and star of a Netflix documentary on his way to Paralympic Gold.Show Links:WebsiteInstagramTikTokFacebookYouTubeCORE TOPICS + DETAILS:[5:40] - Survival Before SuccessRedefining what it means to “succeed”Before Zion could even dream of success or achievement, his life was a matter of survival. It's a fact of life that many children in the foster care system and otherwise don't have the same opportunities that others do. This is something Zion is working to change, and it's up to all of us to recognize that success looks different depending on where you are and where you started.[17:18] - 10 Years of Ass KickingLessons from a decade of struggleIf there's one thing Zion Clark knows how to do, it's endure. He didn't give up after a year of wrestling struggles, or five years, or ten years. Then, when he found the right coaches, it was like rocket fuel in his engine. He would go on to win match after match, and never looked back.[27:25] - Smiling with Bloody TeethIs it possible to enjoy being hit in the face?Zion speaks gleefully about his love for physical pain— “even if you hit me, I'm still smiling.” This comfort with discomfort, even at the physical level, is something we all can learn from in both our careers and our everyday struggles in life.[38:57] - Inspire Your WayFrom stage to fieldPaul does his inspiring on keynote stages. Zion does his at meets, wrestling matches, and in weight rooms. To inspire means to breathe life into something or someone. Curtis McGrath OAM has served in the Australian Army as a combat engineer for 6 years where he served with honour in East Timor, Indonesia and Afghanistan. On the 23rd August 2012 Curtis was on a patrol where he stepped right on an improvised explosive device (IED) which detonated beneath him taking both his legs. Only 20min after the explosion, Curtis famously said that “you will see me in the Paralympics”. Since losing his legs Curtis has not looked back 18 months after this fateful day Curtis was crowned World Champion at the World Sprint Canoe Championships in Moscow, Russia. This had started his path to the Paralympics. In 2016, just over 4 years after losing his legs, Curtis true to his word, not only made it to the Paralympics but made history in becoming the first Australian to win a Paralympic Gold medal in the Paracanoe event at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Although the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games were postponed, the goal remained the same. Curtis went into his events as the favourite and did not let the pressure get to him. He defended his Rio Gold medal and added another Gold to his tally in the 200m V1 canoe. Tokyo, although different Curtis maintained his Gold medal winning ways, now with three Paralympic Gold medals next to his name. Curtis has used sport to help him recover and go on to become Paralympic champion. This is the reason he is an advocate for sport and its ability to bring communities and people together to live a healthy active lifestyle, as well as bridging gaps that society has throughout the globe. He has truly lived the Invictus life. Kurt Fearnley is Australia's pre-eminent Good Strong Bloke (GSB). Over a 25-year career, he's amassed three Paralympic Gold medals, two Olympic silver medals and seven world titles. He's also crawled the Kokoda Trail, crewed the winning yacht in the Sydney to Hobart, and jagged an OAM. We hear what it's like to be an 18-year-old competing in front of 118,000 people at Sydney 2000, to winning Gold in Athens 2004 (despite busting a tyre 5km from the finish line). We discuss the pressure of perfection at the elite level - including Simone Biles' exit from Tokyo 2020 - and the 'feast or famine' nature of life after sport for many Olympians. We also get the low down on which Australians to look out for in the upcoming Paralympics, which kick off August 24.Audio production thanks to Tim 'T-Dog' Eldridge, with graphic design by Julia Edwards.Any questions/comments/grievances, hit us up at haveagopodcast@gmail.com.
