PREVIEW OF TODAY'S PARROT TALK. FOR THE FULL EPISODE SUBSCRIBE ON ITUNES. The hospitalization of the Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin was the best kept secret in Washington D.C. The Pentagon waited three days to tell the White House that Austin was in the ICU at Walter Reed Hospital. Austin instructed his staff to tell people the defense secretary was working at home. Among those not told was the Regime Leader. To be fair the Regime Leader doesn't know where he is at most of the time. Mike Parrott says this behavior is not acceptable, but since the Austin is not qualified to be the Secretary of Defense, this doesn't surprise Mike Parrott. Mike served under Austin in Iraq. He witnessed how inept the Secretary was. Mike exposes why this is a big deal, and how its an even bigger deal that the clueless Regime Leader didn't know his top military advisor was in the ICU. Learn more about this on today's episode of Parrott Talk.

It's Friday, April 28th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. By Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com) Russia "weaponizing religion" and persecuting churches in Ukraine A new report by the Institute for the Study of War claims that Russian forces are persecuting and repressing the church in areas under their control. The report states that “Russia continues to weaponize religion. … Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian soldiers or occupation authorities, have reportedly committed at least 76 acts of religious persecution in Ukraine.” Russian forces have closed down or taken over 76 places of worship, looted, desecrated or destroyed 13, and have killed or seized 29 religious leaders in occupied Ukraine. Researchers describe the religious repression as “part of a deliberate campaign to systematically eradicate ‘undesirable religious organizations in Ukraine and promote the Patriarch of the Russian Church.” Walter Reed Hospital cancelled Catholic pastoral care Officials with Walter Reed National Military Medical Center have not explained their controversial decision to end a longstanding contract for Catholic pastoral care services at the beginning of Holy Week, reports Baptist News. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese for Military Services strongly criticized the nation's most well-known military hospital for issuing a “cease and desist order” to Holy Name College, a community of Franciscan Catholic priests and brothers who have provided pastoral care to Catholic service members and veterans at Walter Reed for two decades. Oddly enough, the U.S. military has awarded the new contract for Catholic pastoral care to a for-profit, secular company that the archdiocese believes cannot provide adequate care. Archbishop Timothy Broglio said the unnamed firm awarded the contract “is incapable of providing priestly care. It's like hiring a brain surgeon who didn't go to med school.” Whatever the origin and reasoning for the change — Walter Reed officials have been silent. Republican Congressmen put the blame on President Joe Biden who is, ironically, a Catholic. Was Tucker Carlson fired because he urged prayer for America? Despite the fact that “Tucker Carlson Tonight” was the highest-rated show in all cable news with an average of 3.39 million viewers, Fox News fired him recently. Some have wondered whether it was, in any way, related to a powerful extemporaneous speech that he gave to the Heritage Foundation on Friday night, April 21st, shortly after his last show, reports The Washington Stand. The 28-minute speech, available on YouTube, has already been viewed by 3.9 million people. Carlson addressed the transgender movement. CARLSON: “If you have people who are saying, ‘I have an idea. Let's castrate the next generation. Let's sexually mutilate children.' I'm sorry. That's not a political debate. What? That has nothing to do with politics. What's the outcome we're desiring here? An androgynous population? Is that really … Are were arguing for that? I don't think anyone could defend that as a positive outcome. But the weight of the government, and a lot of corporate interests, are behind that. Well, what is that? Well, it's irrational.” He talked about the modern-day abortion movement. CARLSON: “If you're telling me that abortion is a positive good, what are you saying? Well, you're arguing for child sacrifice, obviously. But when the Treasury Secretary stands up and says, ‘You know what you can do to help the economy? Get an abortion!' That's like an Aztec principle actually.” “What's the point of child sacrifice? Well, there's no policy goal entwined with that. No, that's a theological phenomenon. And that's kind of the point I'm making. None of this makes sense in conventional political terms.” Carlson called out the motivating factor of today's federal government. CARLSON: “When the federal government decides that the goal is to destroy things -- destruction for its own sake. ‘Hey, let's tear it down,” what you're watching is not a political movement. It's evil!” The former Fox News Host concluded his speech by advocating for daily prayer for America. CARLSON: “Maybe we should all take just like 10 minutes a day to say a prayer about it. (applause) I'm serious, like, why not? And I'm saying that to you, not as some kind of evangelist. I'm literally saying that to you as an Episcopalian, the Samaritans of our time. I'm coming to you from the most humble and lowly theological position you can. And even I have concluded it might be worth taking just 10 minutes out of your busy schedule to say a prayer for the future. And I hope you will.” Proverbs 14:34 says, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people.” Ron Hamilton, known as “Patch the Pirate,” has died And finally, Ron Hamilton, best known as the character, “Patch the Pirate,” in the world of Christian music for children, died on April 19th. Incredibly prolific, he wrote and sang 900 songs as part of a series of character-building, comical, and musical recordings for children produced by Majesty Music. The “Patch the Pirate” albums have sold over two million copies, and the adventures are featured on over 600 Christian radio stations. To date, over a million streams of Patch are reported every month. To the glory of God, countless children have come to know Christ through “Patch the Pirate.” Listen to a portion of one song inspired by Isaiah 6:8. “Lord, I give my life to You. Take control each day. I will follow anywhere. Here or far away. (chorus with kids) “Here am I Lord, send me. Here am I Lord, send me. I will serve You faithfully. Here am I Lord, send me.” After graduating from Bob Jones University, an ophthalmologist discovered melanoma cancer in Ron Hamilton's left eye which required surgical removal. He opted to wear a leather eye patch permanently. This earned him the title “Patch the Pirate” from children everywhere. This seeming tragedy became the greatest ministry blessing of Ron and his wife Shelly's lives. Close And that's The Worldview on this Friday, April 28th in the year of our Lord 2023. By Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com) 22 civilians in Congo killed by rebel group On February 12th and 13th, 22 civilians were killed in two separate attacks in Africa's Democratic Republic of Congo. The attacks took place in the conflict-ridden province of Ituri, reports International Christian Concern. The perpetrators of the attacks, which occurred about twelve hours apart, are suspected to belong to a local rebel group called CODECO, which stands for “Cooperative for Development of the Congo,” which is one of the many militias operating in the east of the country. Congo is the 37th most dangerous country in the world for Christians. Pray that justice would be done. Proverbs 21:15 says, “When justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous, but terror to evildoers.” The story of one Turkish woman On February 12th, an elderly woman approached the Samaritan's Purse site near the location of the Turkish earthquake in need of something to eat as she is diabetic. One of their registered nurses, named Rhonda, who happens to speak Turkish, was able to give her a banana during a brief break from setting up the tents and equipment. More importantly, Rhonda provided a listening ear. The elderly woman shared that she is from another area in Turkey, but that her family lives here. After hearing the news of the devastating earthquakes, she traveled to the city to find her daughter and grandchildren. To her utter dismay, they had all died in the disaster. While speaking with the Samaritan's Purse staff, the woman shed tears and thanked the ministry for coming to Turkey. She offered hugs and kisses before leaving the site in search of somewhere to stay for the night. Her story is heartbreaking, but just one of so many in Turkey today. To help fund the 52-bed field hospital set up by Samaritan's Purse, click on a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. Daniel Ortega stripped 94 Nicaraguans of citizenship, deports to U.S. Nicaraguan dictator Daniel Ortega stripped 94 Nicaraguans of their citizenship, including some of the Central American country's most celebrated writers and journalists, reports The Guardian. The move was announced by a Nicaraguan judge on February 15th. Last week, 222 political prisoners, including some of Nicaragua's leading opposition activists, were deported from Nicaragua and flown to the U.S. – a move widely interpreted as a sign of Ortega's determination to remain in power after 16 years as president. Nicaragua's government called the deportees, who were also stripped of their citizenship, “traitors to the motherland.” Brian Nichols, the U.S. state department's assistant secretary for western hemisphere affairs, tweeted, “This deplorable act represents a step further away from the democracy the people of Nicaragua deserve.” And speaking to the Washington Post last week, Juan Pappier, with Human Rights Watch, said, “The country is on the verge of becoming the western hemisphere's equivalent of North Korea.” Senator John Fetterman suffering clinical depression Democrat Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania checked himself into Walter Reed Hospital to receive treatment for clinical depression on Wednesday night, reports Breitbart. Adam Jentleson, his chief of staff, said, “While John has experienced depression off and on throughout his life, it only became severe in recent weeks. On Monday, John was evaluated by Dr. Brian Monahan, the Attending Physician of the United States Congress. Yesterday, Dr. Monahan recommended inpatient care at Walter Reed. John agreed, and he is receiving treatment on a voluntary basis.” Fetterman suffered a stroke last year before he won the Pennsylvania Senate race in a highly competitive contest against Dr. Mehmet Oz. His office said this month that he was hospitalized after he felt lightheaded but that tests ruled out another stroke, reports NBC News. 4th abortion complication at University of New Mexico abortion mill On February 15th, Abortion Free New Mexico volunteers documented the fourth abortion complication of 2023 at the University of New Mexico Center for Reproductive Health abortion mill in Albuquerque. A woman was placed into an ambulance and taken to the emergency room during the lunch hour. This occurred just six days after the last abortion complication that was recorded by the No Sidewalk Without the Savior volunteers. The steady rate of abortion injuries at this location raises red flags about who is causing these injuries on unsuspecting women, most of whom are traveling there from out of state. It has been well documented by Abortion Free New Mexico that the University of New Mexico participates in the Ryan Residency Training program whose main emphasis is to “ensure the availability of abortion care in hospitals and make sure that all obstetrician-gynecologists are skilled to provide abortion." Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico invited Christian pro-lifers to “join us as we call upon the governing leadership at the University of New Mexico to shut down this dangerous late-term abortion facility." You can sign the petition through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. Florida Christian college cancels singers over homosexuality And finally, on February 11th, Pensacola Christian College cancelled The King's Singers, a highly regarded British male a cappella ensemble which sings pop, classical, and sacred music, because one of their singers is an active homosexual, reports CNN. Jonathan Howard, one of the six members of The King's Singers, told The New York Times that two members of the group were homosexual. In a tweet, The King's Singers said, “It has become clear to us, from a flood of correspondence from students and members of the public, that these concerns related to the sexuality of members of our group.” In a responsive tweet, Pensacola Christian College, a private independent Baptist institution, said that it “cannot knowingly give an implied or direct endorsement of anything that violates the Holy Scripture, the foundation of our sincerely held beliefs. Pensacola Christian College cancelled a concert with The King's Singers upon learning that one of the artists openly maintained a lifestyle that contradicts Scripture. “The highly talented musicians were treated with dignity and respect when informed of the cancellation. The artists stated their understanding and acceptance of the change and were given full remuneration.” A section referring to sexuality in the school's articles of faith notes: “We believe that God has commanded that sexual activity be exclusively reserved to a man and a woman who are legally married to each other.” It goes on to say that scripture forbids “sexual immorality including adultery, fornication, homosexuality, bestiality, incest, and the use of pornography.” Because of its Biblical stand, Pensacola Christian College is being called homophobic and unchristian by homosexuals and their supporters, reports ThePinkNews. But Ephesians 5:11 says, “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” Take a moment and thank the college's president, Dr. Troy Shoemaker. Jay kicks us off with the story behind “I Am The Moon”, a four album exploration of Layla's perspective from the old Arab story “Layla & Majnun”. Then we move onto the controversy of the past week. Ticketmaster has rolled out its dynamic pricing system just in time for Bruce Springsteen tickets to go on sale. Tickets to some shows have gone for as much as $5000 due to demand. Most of that money is going to Bruce (instead of the scalper that bought it a reasonable price and resold it to the highest bidder), which begs the question: Why does this still feel unfair? We discuss…Song: Tedeschi Trucks Band - “Hold That Line”Nick has a bit? Nick has a bit! “Show Must Go On” is about bands that are so inspired by their founder's vision that they continue playing as a group after the founder's passing. This week on our inaugural edition, we learn about Sun Ra Arkestra. Sun Ra, born in Birmingham AL in 1914, had a brilliant ear and took to the piano at a very early age. Growing up an African American musician in the deep south during the 1920s was incredibly difficult and, early in his college years, he had a vision of ascending to Saturn where Africans could live with the freedom and self-agency that they could not attain in many parts of the Western world. He was an incredibly prolific artist, performer and philosopher. His lifelong project, Sun Ra Arkestra, lives on to this day to keep his vision alive.Songs:Sun Ra Arkestra - “Somebody Else's Idea”Sun Ra - “I Am Strange / I Am An Instrument”Greg gives us the story behind a recent gig that The Resilient performed for AFSCME at the Philadelphia Convention Center. Hired to perform a handful of songs, a request came in to play some Springsteen. Greg recalled a Bruce song that Tom Morello taught the Music Corps Band back at Walter Reed Hospital called “Ghost of Tom Joad”. After playing the show, Greg had a friend send Morello a clip of their performance and heard back…which kind of means we have Tom Morello's cell number now! More importantly, The Resilient are amazing and we were excited to hear about their latest outing!Songs: The Resilient - “Ghost of Tom Joad”

I am not fan of Donald Trump, but then again, I am not really a fan of most politicians; but far too few people realize that you do not have to be a fan of someone to recognize their humanity, to remember that they are a human being. A simple recognition of someone's humanity allows us to strengthen our critique of said person because then we are able to divorce ourselves from at least the majority of our various biases. So I was absolutely fascinated to learn that Donald Trump's exposure to Covid-19 was a lot more serious than he made it sound. Sure, I had an inkling that Trump was not faring well, but there was no way to know of the severity of his illness at the time. "When Trump was admitted to Walter Reed Hospital with Covid symptoms last fall, Mark Meadows, his then chief of staff, feared the president might die, according to an article in the Washington Post adapted from Nightmare Scenario, a book about Trump's response to the pandemic." (Forbes) Trump was actually told by medical professionals at the time, along with some members of his own administration, to stay in the hospital, but he refused. Although this may just seem like another stupid decision of Trump's, this is a common occurrence in America. Many people go against their doctor's orders, citing concerns about "Big Pharma" or preferring to use "natural therapies", which are often even more lethal than side effects of FDA approved treatments. Trump was so desperate to appear as if he was super human that members of his administration requested that therapies, which at the time were simply experimental, be used on the president of the wealthiest nation in the world. Now that is desperation folks. You may not be able to fully appreciate that, but I sure can. Experimental therapies are never used on a sitting president. Though the therapy was approved for use before it was given to Trump, this only occurred because it was requested by Trump's administration. Hat it not been requested, it most likely would not have been approved at the time. "As Trump lay ill, then Food and Drug Administration commissioner Stephen Hahn received an urgent request from a top White House official about fast-tracking authorization for a monoclonal antibody treatment not yet approved by the agency." (Forbes) Why is a president of the most powerful nation to ever exist so afraid of being perceived by his followers as unwell? Well, some of it is pride, but pride does not just pop up out of nowhere; it is a byproduct of American nationalism. Consider the what Donald Trump tweeted to his followers the same month he would later be hospitalized with Covid-19: a meme with a picture of Joe Biden superimposed over an elderly person sitting in a wheelchair, who also appears to be in a retirement home; the tweet reads "Biden for President" with the p crossed out, causing it to read "Biden for Resident". The tweet received 422 likes. But it also played a huge part in driving away a lot of elderly people from voting for Trump in 2020. This, along with Trumpers recently booing Bill O'Rieley and Donald Trump for getting their booster shots, demonstrates that the Trump base is nowhere near as respectful of their elders as they like to pretend. The harsh truth about America is that it often uses this very ableist and ageist narrative, making cartoons out of disabled people as well as elderly people in order to gain likes and follows from those who lack empathy. Making a mockery of the sick and the aged became extremely popular during the eugenics movement in this country. Those who needed care or who were ill, a large number of whom were elderly, were seen as blemishes and burdens on society. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/morecontentplease/support
This is a snippet from Breaking Walls Episode 98: Christmas Week 1947 with Radio's Biggest Stars ———————————— President Truman spent only two Christmas' at the White House during his tenure. The first was in 1947. It preceded the extensive renovations the Presidential Mansion would undergo during Truman's second term. On Christmas Eve, at 5PM eastern time, live from The White House, all four networks broadcast the annual Christmas Tree ceremony. President Truman and his daughter Margaret lit the main tree on the South Grounds before heading back inside to celebrate the Holiday. The President spent his Christmas Morning visiting with patients at the Naval Medical Center and the Walter Reed Hospital. The General Mills sponsored Lone Ranger from WXYZ in Detroit first began airing on January 31st, 1933. The next year it became one of the cornerstone programs which led to the formation of the Mutual Broadcasting System. The show moved to the Blue Network in 1942 and would remain on the network after it became ABC. In the fall of 1947, after 15 years in the same Monday-Wednesday-Friday time slots, The Lone Ranger nearly doubled its previous season's rating. It was the only program airing multiple times per-week to crack the season's top fifty, climbing all the way to 35th with a rating of 16.4. It would remain the number one multiple run program for the next three seasons. On Christmas Eve, 1947 at 7:30PM Eastern Time while families gathered around the table, kids everywhere snuck away to hear The Lone Ranger's broadcast of “The Mission Bells.”

Ned Lamont has submitted a request for a major disaster declaration to the Biden administration, seeking federal funds to help Connecticut recover from damage caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ida. The Sept. 1st storm dumped as much as 8 inches of rain on parts of the state, resulting in heavy flooding and an estimated $7.2 million in damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure. It also resulted in the death of State Police Sgt. Brian Mohl, whose vehicle was swept away in floodwaters. Lamont said: “The effects from the remnants of Hurricane Ida were of such severity that effective recovery is beyond the capabilities of state and local governments, and as a result, supplemental federal assistance is necessary.” Lamont's request would allow homeowners in Fairfield and New London counties, as well residents of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribal Nation, to receive federal reimbursements for the costs of uninsured damage to their housing and personal property. According to Lamont's request, just 8% of damaged homes in New London County and 23% in Fairfield County had flood insurance. The proposed declaration also would allow municipalities in Fairfield and Middlesex counties to receive up to 75% federal reimbursement of the costs of uninsured damage to roads and other infrastructure, as well as costs for emergency response. The governor's office said public assistance damage assessments in Litchfield, New Haven and New London counties have not been completed and his request could be updated. Helen, a birth-rite Quaker, was born in Lansdowne, PA. After a combined eight years of living in Boston and New Jersey, the family came back to the Philadelphia area settling in Rosemont. The family constant were summers spent in Weekapaug, Rhode Island. Throughout her childhood, competitive ice skating and sailing the sneakbox on Weekapaug pond were two joys. Helen attended Shipley School and graduated in 1943. In 1945 Penny and Clif were married and made their home in St. David's, raising their four children. Their family summers were split between Weekapaug and Squam Lake, NH. After the children were grown, Penny and Clif moved to Haverford with their later years living at Beaumont at Bryn Mawr, all-the-while wintering at "The Nest" in Vero Beach, Florida. Helen's abundant love, great sense of humor and energy were focused on family and friends, but also included running for public office and her volunteer work. Growing up a Pennock meant flowers were always in her life. She won first prize at the Philadelphia Flower Show for "Individual Floral Arranging". She also was a faithful member of Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church where she served as a Deacon for many years. During WWII she trained as a nurse's aid and continued her service during the Vietnam War. Helen volunteered as a "Grey Lady" at the Valley Forge Hospital in Coatesville, PA. Twice a week she escorted the amputees from Fort Dix, NJ to Valley Forge Hospital on an old school bus. After listening to the men in extreme discomfort during transportation Helen used her power of persuasion in Washington D.C. and Detroit to have money appropriated to build a prototype deluxe bus equipped with special shock absorbers for the amputees. That bus was nicknamed "The Collings Special". Helen was later honored at Walter Reed Hospital, outside Washington, D.C., for her insight, tenacity and accomplishment. Penny made long lasting friends wherever she went. She and Clif loved life together! Traveling the world extensively, playing golf and bridge, her fun sense of humor always on display. She is survived by her sister, her four children, her six grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate Penny's life. This podcast was recorded the week of the American withdrawl from Afghanistan. You will hear many references to the events. Matias Ferreira was born in Uruguay. His parents were able to move the family to the United States for a better life. Matias remembers the first time he saw a marine in Centennial Park. The clean, crisp uniform and shiny medals made an impression on the young Matias. Matias was in seventh grade on September 11, 2001. He watched the events on television from his classroom. Matias learned the concept of freedom. Matias joined the marines after high school graduation. He went to Parris Island, SC for boot camp. Matias was over 6 feet tall and 145 pounds dripping wet. Rigorous training followed boot camp. Matias called Camp Geiger in N.C. home for a 11/2 months as he attended school of infantry, including a machine gun course. Matias was assigned to the 1st batallion, 8th marines, 2nd division. They had a year to train before being deployed to Afghanistan in September 2010. Matias and his marines landed at Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan. From there they went to their FOB (forward operating base) to patrol or post every day. Matias' next move was to 7171, a big mountain top to oberserve the Taliban. On January 21, 2011 the marines marched into a compound, Matias accompanied as part of the observation team. He went onto a roof top 8 ft up. Matias jumped from the roof to gather more equipment. He landed on an unseen IED. The explosion blew off both of Matias' legs below the knee. The long road of recovery began: Bagram Base in Afghanistan for a stabilizing surgery; a second surgery in Landstuhl, Germany; and a final flight to Walter Reed Hospital. Matias arrived to America with two amputated legs, a broken pelvis, and a shattered femur. He stayed at Walter Reed until May 2012. Six years later, Matias Ferreira became the first below the knee double amputee police officer. He served on patrol for 11/2 years in Long Island, NY; transferred to midnight hours for 2 years; served on community outreach for 9 months; and now works at the police academy as an instructor. Matias lives by the motto, "Life without limbs is limitless." He has scuba dived, ran 1/2 marathons; jumped out of planes, practices jiu jitsu, and enjoys biking with this girlfriend. In November of 2006 Staff Sergeant Marcus Wilson was seriously injured in Haditha Iraq as a result of an IED hitting his humvee. Marcus was the only survivor. As a result, Marcus lost his left leg and sustained massive injuries throughout his body. Marcus has memories of being taken to the landing zone atop a tank with the sounds of bullets hitting the armored beast. Marcus Wilson was born in the small town of Dermott, Arkansas. His father was in the marines, and tried to dissuade Marcus from doing the same. Marcus had other plans. He joined the marines in 1993 at the tender age of 16 and entered boot camp after graduation at only 17 years old. Marcus had multiple deployments to Okinawa, Japan. It was there he heard about the September 11 attacks on America. He served in Afghanistan in 2005 and came out unscathed. His next deployment, Iraq, was a different story. The level of violence was at a whole other level. IEDs and snipers occurred on almost a daily basis. By the time that deployment ended, half of Marcus' platoon had purple hearts. Marcus received two purple hearts. His first IED left him with a couple of stitches. A month later, Marcus was traumatically injured with a second IED. Marcus spent 31/2 to 4 years at Walter Reed Hospital. The first two years were in rehabilitation and the second half was helping other injured service members. Marcus was a pivotal part of Matthew Bradford's recovery. You can listen to Matthew's American Story here. Marcus has found peace in hunting. He has opened this door to other vets looking for solace. Marcus lives on 5 acres with his wife, children, and beloved alpacas. You can find Marcus on Facebook at Marcus Wilson on Facebook
When Senator Tammy Duckworth was shot down over Iraq while serving in the US Army, she did not notice at first that her legs were mostly gone, destroyed by the blast. After countless surgeries and hours of rehab, Sen. Duckworth eventually learned to walk on prosthetics. Her new memoir, Every Day Is a Gift, recounts her injury and recovery, as well as her childhood and rise to the US Senate. Sen. Duckworth talked with David about growing up in Southeast Asia and Hawaii and the financial struggles her family experienced, the challenges facing working mothers today, and why she refused to see then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld during her recovery at Walter Reed Hospital. Before we find out whether he's going to live or die I just wished to make my feelings known about the whole thing and even for the people who know me, I don't think I feel what y'all might think I feel. So let's take a few minutes and dissect this. (00:00-09:47): In the headlines: Trump leaves the hospital to pay a visit to patriots outside of Walter Reed Hospital. Will contracting COVID-19 change Trump? PLUS, There is no getting 'back to normal,' experts say. The sooner we accept that, the better. (09:47-28:08): We were joined by senior news editor at Christianity Today, Kate Shellnut. She gives us the latest on the presidential election coming up, and how the demographics of voters has altered since the last election. She discusses how “This Election, Evangelical Supporters Have More Faith in Trump” and much more. She also touches on the response from people on Trump contracting COVID-19. While there were some people who were abrasive and vulgar, there were Christian leaders, and even critics of him, calling for prayer for the President. (28:08-36:58): Ed Yong writes, “America Is Trapped in a Pandemic Spiral” As the U.S. heads toward the winter, the country is going round in circles, making the same conceptual errors that have plagued it since spring.” (36:58-46:52): Latest from the Vatican and James Martin “Pope Francis closes the door on the death penalty in ‘Fratelli Tutti’”. Brian and Ian discuss this to kick off the second hour about this. (46:52-56:22): Marisa Franco in Psyche writes “How to make friends as an adult”. Friendships give us so much. Be bold, take the initiative, and you’ll be surprised how many people are pleased to connect. (56:22-1:05:45): Charlie Peacock writes “Why We Get Up in the Morning Shouldn’t Differ from Sunday to Monday” in Christianity Today. Steven Garber envisions lives marked by greater coherence between our deepest commitments and our everyday cares. CDC tells the United States to prepare for a possible vaccine by early November. Most experts don't expect a vaccine to be fully tested by then. NIH says that evidence backing plasma as a treatment is "insufficient." Trump has admitted that a vaccine around election day "wouldn't hurt" and raises concerns that Trump is rushing a vaccine for political reasons. Trump's former White House doctor and now GOP congressional candidate is defending Trump's mysterious trip to Walter Reed Hospital. Attorney General Barr claims that China is more aggressive than Russia in trying to influence United States elections. Barr downplays Russian election meddling despite intel warnings. Barr says Russia "might try again" to interfere in election as intel officials say that Russia is already trying to "denigrate" Biden. Barr backs up Trump on vote-by-mail criticism and claims it would be "playing with fire" and "reckless and dangerous." Barr says it's a "false narrative" to say "police are on some epidemic of shooting unarmed Black men." Biden calls for officer involved in Jacob Blake shooting to be charged as he is meeting with the Blake family tomorrow in Kenosha. Biden says Trump "keeps throwing gasoline on the fire." I love Aparna, and I'm far from alone. Her hilarious stage presence, her incredible acting work, and her peerless writing (no one is better at Twitter) have earned her fans from all walks of life. She and I met doing comedy in the waiting area of Walter Reed Hospital ten-odd years ago, and we've been friends ever since. This week's guest is retired Army First Sergeant Patrick Abrams. Patrick was drafted and served in Vietnam in 1971 and then deployed again in 2003 to Iraq as a 55-year old infantry platoon sergeant with the New York National Guard. He was severely injured when a vehicle-borne improvised explosive devise detonated at a checkpoint that he was supervising. While recovering at Walter Reed Hospital, doctors discovered a 15-pound tumor in his abdomen that was almost too large to remove. His surgeon told him that the suicide bomber saved his life. Patrick discusses his time in service both in Vietnam and Iraq, his injury and recovery, the impact on his family, and what it was like to come back home from Vietnam and then again today. Full disclosure: Patrick is Mike's father! ABOUT US Welcome to the FourBlock Podcast, a show that examines veteran career transition and the military-civilian divide in the workplace. General Charles Krulak coined the term "Three Block War" to describe the nature of 21st-century military service defined by peace-keeping, humanitarian aid, and full combat. But what happens next? Veterans are often unprepared to return home and begin new careers. We call this the Fourth Block. FourBlock is a national non-profit that has supported thousands of transitioning service members across the nation in beginning new and meaningful careers. Mike Abrams (@fourblock) is an Afghanistan veteran, FourBlock founder, director of the Columbia University Center for Veteran Transition and Integration, and author of two military transition books. He'll be representing the military transition perspective. Lindsey Pollak (@lindsaypollak) is a career and workplace expert and New York Times bestselling author of three career advice books.
