Hello to you Byron and Mariah Edgington listening in Gainesville, Florida!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga. My friend Byron Edgington wrote: “Isn't it fascinating how we humans revert to past events, as if we could/can change what happened there?”Yes. We humans can be a silly species failing to acknowledge the past as the past. The past is like the wake behind a boat - the series of waves that trails behind a moving boat. But the wake doesn't drive the boat; however, awareness of and learning from the past is what allows us to drive the boat of our present into a better future. The phrase "the wake doesn't drive the boat" (a metaphor attributed to Alan Watts) means that your past or wake of your life boat doesn't determine your future. Yes, learning from our past influences our present actions; but the future is determined by how we drive our boat now, not by the path we've already traveled.Question: How have you learned to drive your boat forward based on choices arising from past lessons?Click HERE to listen to Alan Watts talk about the boat analogy and how it applies to the present moment.Thank you for listening and steady as she goes! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Mike, Brook and A'marri discuss goal setting and strategic planning for your business. Your data should tell a story. Within that story are learning lessons that need to be applied to your new strategies. This goes for your business as well as your personal life. Some things are black and white and others are gray and nuanced. Be disciplined in your routine, but allow new ideas and creativity to process in the background of your mind after a power nap, run, workout or Mike's favorite, a "shower moment". We reflect in January as we prepare for the stress testing moments that show up later in the year in the middle of the action.2:50 Mike and Brook discuss the importance of reviewing last year's performance, analyzing revenue, expenses, and whether certain investments were truly profitable.4:35 Mike uses the analogy of weight loss to explain how business owners should track their progress, emphasizing the importance of writing everything down, measuring results, and making adjustments just like a fitness journey.9:00 Mike, Brook and A'marri discusses the significance of tracking every expense, no matter how small, and how financial awareness can lead to better decision-making.16:30 Mike emphasizes the importance of reflection and strategic thinking, encouraging business owners to take time to analyze what is working and what needs to change.32:00 Amarri highlights the idea that data should tell a story, and decisions should be driven by the patterns and insights found in the numbers.

LANEY ROSENAWEIG is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist for over three decades in the mental health field. In addition to her private practice, Laney trains licensed mental health professionals in the use of "ART", ACCELERATED RESOLUTION THERAPY. Laney has taken her training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitizaation Reprogramming) to a place where recovery is not only much faster (often as little as a one hour seession), but the patient does. not have to relive the trauma, nor the therapist hear about it. She describes the work as targeting the area of the brain which talk therapy is unable to access, and the patient is able to replace negative images with positive ones. While the memory of the trauma is not erased, its impact is mitigated. Laney says,“The most difficult aspect of discussing ART is the fact that it sounds too good to be true.” We discuss her training, how she discovered and devleposed her technique, how she trains other practioners and offers many examples of successful patient treatment. It's important to acknowledge that not everyone experiences the same level of distress, but for those who do, it can be quite challenging. Often, people turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms because they feel overwhelmed and can't access other options. To break free from this cycle, we introduce the concept of radical acceptance. It's a combination of cognitive restructuring, acceptance, and mindfulness. By recognizing the reality of our current situation without blame or anger, we can regain control and make better decisions. Letting go of self-judgment and self-criticism is essential, as it only perpetuates the cycle of anxiety. Instead, we suggest using coping statements like "this is what it is" and "I can't change what has already happened" to shift our focus and find ways to move forward. We often find ourselves dwelling on the past, wishing we could change things and blaming ourselves for our mistakes. But radical acceptance teaches us to let go of blame and anger and understand that our present circumstances are the result of a series of events, not a single situation. When we fight with the past, we only fuel our stress response and drain our energy. Instead, we need to focus on the present moment, because that's where we have control and the power to take action.Even if we don't like what's happening, we have to accept that this moment is perfect because it's happening. We can't change the past or predict the future, but we can make clear decisions and take action in the present. It's important to avoid getting caught up in worrying about what might happen and instead bring ourselves back to what is happening now. Learn more about your ad choices.
