The Revoice Conference was founded in 2018 in order to 'support and encourage gay, lesbian, bisexual, and other same-sex attracted Christians—as well as those who love them—so that all in the Church might be empowered to live in gospel unity while observing the historic Christian doctrine of marriage and sexuality.' (Revoice, Mission Statement). A year after the initial event, aware that the movement was only just beginning, Dr. Jonathan Master wrote a 'Letter from America' in the Banner Magazine. With the help of the analysis of David Wells, he notes the weakness of the postmodern vision of spirituality that informs Revoice's commitments. He points us back to classical Christian spirituality, founded on a commitment to the holiness of God and a seriousness about sin which is well reflected in our second selection, from Geoff Thomas, entitled 'Take Sin Seriously'.   Featured Content: – 'Letter from America: The Revoice Conference', Jonathan Master, Banner of Truth Magazine, Issue 667 (April 2019). – 'Take Sin Seriously', Geoff Thomas, Banner of Truth Magazine, Issue 678 (March 2020).   Resources Mentioned: - 'When Christians Adopt Sinful Identities' (segment from Matthew Roberts interview): https://youtu.be/QmFkWDCixXg?si=PecUoJdy5vTIAbsp   Explore the work of the Banner: www.banneroftruth.org Subscribe to the magazine (print/digital/both): www.banneroftruth.org/magazine Leave us a voice message: www.speakpipe.com/magazinepodcast

In this episode Pastor Raef digs into a new claim widely circulating online, and soon coming out with a full documentary, claiming that the Christian position against homosexuality is simply due to a mistranslation of a bible in 1946. Is this true? How can we know if it isn't. Further, we will dig into two ministries that have become quite popular among the gay community, Revoice Conference, and Preston Sprinkle's Center for Faith, Sexuality, and Gender, and discuss why these ministries are so dangerous for the Church.Resourceshttps://raefchenery.com/2023/03/03/can-impulses-and-pre-choice-desires-be-morally-culpable-sin/https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/dec/01/christian-homophobia-bible-mistranslation-1946-documentaryhttps://www.centerforfaith.com/about/statement-of-faithhttps://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/4032467-americans-are-waiting-longer-and-longer-to-get-married/https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2021/11/08/whats-behind-the-growing-gap-between-men-and-women-in-college-completion/https://www.jstor.org/stable/2779118?searchText=church%20fathers%20homosexuality&searchUri=%2Faction%2FdoBasicSearch%3FQuery%3Dchurch%2Bfathers%2Bhomosexuality&ab_segments=0%2Fbasic_search_gsv2%2Fcontrol&refreqid=fastly-default%3A05e39c417b59476a47ad9fe80c42dc35https://www.str.org/w/the-claim-about-homosexuality-in-the-film-1946-is-irrelevant

Contrary to (some) opinions, those of us who consider ourselves “Side B” on Christian sexuality don't agree on everything, nor is there a shared “declaration of theology” document that we can all agree on. What ideas unite and divide the Side B community? TJ and David identify 6 areas of unity and 8 areas of difference, within the Side B community. Note: This episode uses the terms “Side A” and “Side B” (and X, Y) as shorthand quite a bit. If you're new to the conversation, you might find it helpful to check out Communion & Shalom episode #3, where we talk through the four “sides”: #3 - A-B-Y-X | 4 Sides on SSA/Gay Sexuality And, if it helps clarify…when we say someone “is Side B”, we're referring to those of us who are ourselves queer or same-sex attracted (which is different than the larger group, queer or straight, who align with Side B's general theology and posture). __________ Timestamps (00:23) Why this episode is needed Shared Unity in Side B: (05:00) 1. Historic Christian sexual ethic (05:39) 2. The church should uphold celibate vocation (06:06) 3. Willingness to see the goods of being queer (08:30) 4. Same-sex attraction isn't morally culpable as a sinful action (we differ on what is “indwelling sin”) (10:19) 5. Using wisdom, not prescribed language, for identity terms (10:56) 6. Opposition to “conversion therapy” Differences within Side B (11:46): (13:37) 1. Theological, denominational traditions (15:49) 2. Backgrounds, countries, cultures, beliefs, practices (17:10) 3. How we relate to LGBT/queer subculture(s) (23:32) 4. How Christians should influence polity, laws, esp. on gay marriage (50:06) 7. Perspectives on having celibate partnerships (51:43) 8. This is Toby Sumpter with your CrossPolitic Daily News Brief for Friday, March 6, 2020 Nothing is Going on in the PCA, Especially Not in Missouri, Shut Up http://www.boom.lgbt/index.php/art-enter/144-a-e/1907-the-q-collective-announces-cast-of-transluminate-2020?fbclid=IwAR3q-htun27nHZRCunI2gX6bs_A-k4KhIPqNhO7nOaeK4bfaEX-syM18828 The Missouri Presbytery of the PCA and Greg Johnson's Memorial Presbyterian Church are back in the news today with the revelation that they recently hosted the Transluminate Arts Festival. The event describes itself as “a short-play festival and celebration of transgender, agender, non-binary, genderqueer, and genderfluid artists.” The event was held Feb. 27-29 and Feb. 29-March 1 at The Chapel, which is an event venue and ministry partner operated by volunteers from Memorial Presbyterian Church.  Plays that were performed included a homosexual couple discussing their testosterone shots -- presumably implying that they are women trying to be men? Another description reads: “Joe, a transgender man, and Shawna, a transgender woman, are married, and Joe is carrying their child. The bottom of the page includes a content warning: Plays may contain adult language and frank sexual situations. Remember, Greg Johnson and Memorial Presbyterian were in the news back in 2018 when they hosted the first Revoice Conference, celebrating LGBT+ and other sexual minorities and helping them live in the traditional sexual ethic. If that sounds like a contradiction to you, you wouldn't be the only one. Greg Johnson was interviewed by CrossPolitic, and you can find that discussion in our show archives at crosspolitic dot com or on our youtube page. Included in their breakout sessions were titles like What Queer Treasure will be in the New Jerusalem? This kicked up quite a dust storm, which resulted in Missouri Presbytery forming a study committee to investigate Pastor Greg Johnson and Memorial Pres.  This resulted in a presbytery committee that ultimately found that Greg Johnson and Memorial Pres did not commit any grave or serious errors at Revoice 2018 and nothing that took place there struck at the vitals of religion and it is too early to pass any judgment on whether the emphasis on the need for ‘gay spaces' is a grave or serious doctrinal error. The Missouri Presbytery also voted to commend the practice of same-sex back rubs but promised to revisit the issue next year.  Likewise, the scandal elicited a response from Mark Dalbey, President of Covenant Theological Seminary – the official seminary of the PCA, located in St. Louis in March of 2019. Dalbey responded to criticisms and questions about Revoice 2018 . While he affirmed biblical sexuality and clearly identified homosexual identity, lust, and activity as sinful, his strongest admonition was for those who have publicly accused Covenant Seminary of compromise. The video captures quite well why conservatives consistently lose ground in these discussions. President Dalbey's most vehement condemnation was for people who may have shared speculations about Covenant's involvement or influence on Revoice. He effectively called the public questions and concerns “abominations” and “perversions” and “vile affections” and called sodomy and sodomite lust merely “sin.” The clearest thing from the video is that God hates slander, hates gossip, and hates anyone who raises questions and concerns publicly that might be construed by anyone as slander or gossip. So shut up. There was not a word of rebuke for Greg Johnson or Memorial Pres or the Missouri Presbytery for causing the confusion.  Finally, remember that Greg Johnson “came out” as wishing he was a sodomite in Christianity today last year shortly before repeating the line on the floor of the PCA general assembly and receiving a round of applause. The assembly barely passed a resolution affirming the Nashville Statement (over Pastor Johnson's objections), but when another pastor read through the major Bible passages on homosexuality, his speech was objected to and a formal complaint was filed by a number of PCA delegates calling his speech intemperate. So notice that the great and heinous sin in the PCA is intemperate speech, asking questions, raising concerns publicly about public events. Sure homosex is technically a sin, but the real scandal is not churches hosting gay spaces and queer treasure inquiries. The real scandal is people being bothered by it and asking Covenant Seminary if they have anything to do with it.  Don't forget the political nature of all of this: Jesus said that His people are the light of the world and the salt of the earth. The reason President Trump would have no problem appointing a sodomite to his cabinet is because the largest conservative Reformed denomination in America cannot speak clearly on the matter. The only thing they can say clearly is that you should talk very softly and with a lisp and only raise questions privately and after an ever more private back rub, while remaining completely celibate. Don't worry no grave or serious doctrinal error will take place.   Ilhan Omar Wants Your Children https://parentalrights.org/convention-on-the-rights-back/?fbclid=IwAR3MqGCCktl2jUIu1SpahQkRfXlEsBWQOtNgfKUyLLmgIuOcI4ue06sr5Q8 From Parental Rights dot org we learn that In February, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) introduced a resolution, House Resolution 854, to call for the US Senate to ratify theUnited Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (the Convention, or CRC). In so doing, she once more opened the door—or at least knocked on it—for international law to override parental rights in our country. On November 20, 1989, the UN General Assembly approved the CRC and opened it for ratification. Within ten months, the requisite 20 nations had adopted the treaty, bringing it into force. Since then, every nation except the United States has ratified the CRC. The United States signed the treaty under President Bill Clinton in 1995, signaling our intention to become a party to it. But it has never been ratified with the constitutionally required consent of two-thirds of the Senate as our Constitution requires, so we remain the lone holdout. But there are three solid reasons to give the Convention a solid raspberry, beyond the fact that Rep. Omar is the one who has re-introduced it into congress.  The first reason is the content of the treaty itself. The worst part is a provision that states, “in all matters concerning children, the best interest of the child shall be the primary consideration.” But for the government to make “best interest of the child” its primary consideration, it must first decide—and get to decide—what the best interest of the child actually is. In our courts today, a judge or bureaucrat doesn't get to make that determination without first reaching a finding that the child's parents are unfit (abusive or negligent). Until then, American law presumes that “natural bonds of affection lead parents to act in the best interests of their child” (Parham v. J.R.(1979), emphasis added). So who decides what your child's “best interest” is? Well, at least for the time being, you do, not the government. The CRC would change that by removing this presumption that favors parents and jumping straight to the part where a judge or bureaucrat gets to decide. In every case. The treaty also claims to protect a child's “right to access information,” which could be used to override a parent's efforts to protect their child from pornography or other harmful web content; or a “right to access to medical care,” which can be used to cut parents out of their child's medical decisions, like pumping chemicals into their bodies, like puberty blockers or abortions. Another appalling part of the Treaty is the Committee on the Rights of the Child (the Committee), an oversight panel set up by the provisions of the treaty. Since beginning their work in 1990, the Committee has exercised unchecked authority in deciding what the treaty does or does not mean and what nations must do to be in compliance. For example, when the treaty first went into effect fewer than 10 nations worldwide had any kind of ban on corporal discipline (i.e. the biblical practice of spanking), and no nation expressed any concern that it violated the rights of children. But the Committee, of its own accord and with nothing in the Convention to support it, began telling nations that they were not in compliance because they had not outlawed corporal discipline of children in every setting, including the home. As a result, dozens of nations have since enacted such laws, believing it is their international treaty obligation to do so. And that brings us to the third and biggest reason this treaty is trouble: under Article VI of our own Constitution, a ratified treaty becomes “the supreme Law of the Land.” So ratification of this treaty, which for other nations is an aspirational statement at best (and for many, such as Iran, China, and North Korea, a mere political smokescreen), in America would have the effect of passing a massive new federal law on the family. Today, nearly all family law is at the state level. And these statutes, as bad as some of them are, are still bound by the Constitution and our courts to respect the role of parents as their child's first and best line of defense. Under the CRC, those laws would become the responsibility of the United States Congress, and respect for parents would be gone. Our system—the CRC system—would then depend on judges and bureaucrats to decide what is in a child's “best interests” as defined by Congress, and ultimately, as defined by the CRC. Ratifying the Convention would leave it to that elitist, foreign committee to decide when or if our treatment of children was acceptable under the CRC. Right, a committee in Switzerland is supposed to know what is best for your child.  Fortunately, there is no significant threat of the CRC being taken up by President Trump or sent to the Senate, and there is no significant threat of this Senate giving its two-thirds consent. But lawmakers like Rep. Omar are dedicated incrementalists and groomers. They know that the way to get this eventually passed is by bringing it up over and over and over again.  Of course Christians should oppose this kind of totalitarian nonsense with every fiber of their being. But they should also recognize that the government has already made a significant claim on your children by the very existence of the public school systems, especially the Department of Education in Washington D.C. Until that office is shut down, the Feds are already claiming an interest in parenting your children, and that is wicked and evil and tyrannical. But the same thing goes for the State as well. And as my colleague Gabe has pointed out numerous times, it's also a bit of Republican insanity that continues to fund public schools that disciple children to be hard lefty progressives. It would be like we had a Muslim invasion and the Muslims opened up free schools everywhere, and Christians just mindlessly send their kids to the Muslim schools and are confused by why their kids keep turning out at Muslims. The Republican Party needs to officially repudiate the socialism of public schools and begin working to defund and privatize them all. Until then, Republicans are all soft-socialists without cajones. At least Bernie is bold enough to admit it.   This is Toby Sumpter with Crosspolitic News. This is Toby Sumpter with your CrossPolitic Daily News Brief for Tuesday, February 18, 2020. Three PCA Overtures from the Presbyteries Address Revoice https://pcaga.org/resources/#overtures Things are beginning to heat up in the PCA – the Presbyterian Church in America – the largest conservative Presbyterian denomination in the States. The 48th General Assembly will meet June 16-19, 2020 in Birmingham, Alabama and consider business from the nearly 2,000 congregations, around 90 presbyteries – comprising some nearly 400,000 members.   Presbyteries may send overtures to the General Assembly, which are official requests for action. Three of the 10 overtures currently listed for consideration by the Assembly are related to the recent Revoice controversy in the PCA. Long time listeners of CrossPolitic will remember one of most popular interviews with Greg Johnson, the pastor of Memorial Presbyterian Church, a PCA church in St. Louis, MO back in July, 2018 just days before the very first Revoice Conference. The first Revoice Conference was hosted by Memorial Presbyterian Church, and Pastor Greg Johnson was heavily involved.   https://crosspolitic.com/podcast/family-meeting-with-greg-johnson-pastor-of-memorial-presbyterian-church-and-host-church-of-revoice-us/ Revoice was a conference organized by individuals from several different denominations, but the uniting goal: “To support and encourage gay, lesbian, bisexual, and other same-sex attracted Christians—as well as those who love them—so that all in the Church might be empowered to live in gospel unity while observing the historic Christian doctrine of marriage and sexuality.” The original mission statement included a plus sign and reference to sexual minorities, but apparently Revoice has closed its cold heart to other sexual perversions.  Following that original conference Missouri Presbytery investigated Greg Johnson and 2019 did not find him or his session of elders guilty of any gross theological error. Added to this, Greg Johnson “came out” as a non-practicing homosexual in Christianity Today in May 2019. And then reiterated that identity on the floor of the 2019 General Assembly arguing against the Assembly's adoption of the Nashville Statement, which says in Article 7, “We deny that adopting a homosexual or transgender self-conception is consistent with God's holy purposes in creation and redemption.” The Founder of Revoice, Nate Collins, has said that Revoice was inspired in part by the Nashville Statement. The Nashville Statement was affirmed by the 2019 PCA General Assembly by a vote of 803 to 541. While that was a substantial affirmation of biblical sexuality, it was also a substantial vote against it.  With Missouri Presbytery exonerating Greg Johnson and the elders of Memorial Presbyterian, it should come as little surprise that two presbyteries have sent overtures to the General Assembly for the Standing Judicial Commission to assume original jurisdiction of the matter of Greg Johnson and his elders with regard to theological error and their involvement in the 2018 Revoice Conference. Another overture is from Lowcountry Presbytery requesting the General Assembly to amend the Book of Church Order to include a new clause specifically stating that “Men who self-identify as a “gay Christian,” “same sex attracted Christian,” and/or “homosexual Christian” shall be deemed unfit for ordination in the Presbyterian Church in America.  It's a shame that such a thing need be stated explicitly, but given the lay of the land inside the PCA and our current cultural cesspool, this is absolutely necessary. Many have claimed that the PCA is not nearly as compromised as some think, and if that's the case this overture should pass the General Assembly like a Lebron James slam dunk. But if this barely passes or is outright rejected, I would call for hospice. The PCA is dead.   All Teaching elders are welcome to attend and vote at General Assembly, and every congregation is entitled to send two ruling elders for the first 350 members, and one additional ruling elder for every additional 500 members. Frequently, faithful churches are busy doing good work and do not have the time or resources to be very concerned with denominational politics. They (rightly) value the shepherding work in front of them, but sometimes you really do need to make the sacrifices necessary to guard the broader flock of God. I think it would be wonderful if thousands of faithful elders showed up in Nashville this June and put the kibosh on this sexual silliness. I highly suspect that the social justice hooks are also deep in the PCA, and a heavy dose of gospel common sense might disrupt a whole bunch of shenanigans.    Things are Hot in the SBC https://founders.org/2020/02/17/interesting-times-and-changing-times-in-the-sbc/ And speaking of shenanigans, Jared Longshore and Tom Ascol at Founders Ministries have been busy asking reasonable questions and throwing the SBC into a general panic. The plan was for the elites of the Southern Baptist Convention to slowly bring the largest evangelical denomination into the 21st century with soothing tones and warmed over bromides. But then, as often happens in these revolutionary moments, some one actually reads the fine print. And usually the fine print is not really all that fine or small, but it still takes reading, and when Tom Ascol read the now infamous Resolution 9 – affirming Critical Theory as a useful analytical tool, something went off and he led any attempt to defeat the resolution last year in Birmingham, AL. The Resolution passed, and the documentary By What Standard chronicles that story, which can be watched for free at founders dot org.  And if things are heating up in the PCA, it seems things are already simmering in the SBC. Not satisfied with philosophical hash of Resolution 9, the high priests of the SBC have recently announced the speaking line up for the 2020 Pastor's Conference, meeting just prior to the annual convention in Orlando, June 9-10. This is the annual meeting for the nations largest evangelical denomination, with around 47,000 congregations and nearly 15 million members.  Of course some folks are calling the Founders guys troublemakers, but Ahab called Elijah a troubler and Herod thought the same of John the Baptist and Paul was accused in Thessalonica of turning the whole world upside down. And I'm pretty sure the same thing happened to the boy who asked why the Emperor was so nekked. Tom Ascol merely askes why a woman who is a teaching pastor is being headlined at this year's SBC Pastor's Conference. The Baptist Faith and Message says, “While both men and women are gifted for service in the church, the office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by Scripture.” While the SBC is clear that each church is not bound by the Resolutions or the Baptist Faith and Message, it certainly seems strange to give a platform to a woman who is openly flaunting the stated conviction of the SBC. But there's more… Ascol also asks why SBC Pastor David Hughes, pastor of Church by the Glades is being promoted, given his proclivity to use to sexual themes and innuendo in his sermons and evangelism. Some examples include a gospel tract entitled Victorious Secret, with large bedroom naughty eyes, as well as sermon series entitled The World's Largest Strip Club and the Bible's Game of Thrones. Apparently, there's another SBC pastor who will be speaking at the Pastor's conference who has a woman pastor at his church, and one the folks in the lineup features dancing Storm Troopers during his worship service from time to time.  Every church that is deemed in cooperation with the SBC is entitled to send two messengers to the convention and up to a maximum of 12 messengers based on giving to the convention. And like the PCA situation, I think it would be great for a bunch of good old boy Baptists showed up at the convention this year in their Levis and cowboy hats and their BS detectors turned on high.  And the thing not to miss about this news for today is that as the Church goes, so goes the world. The world is generally a lot better at logic than Christians. Christians have the distinct disadvantage of still caring about what people think. And so Christians can throw off the fear of God but are still trapped by the fear of man. Non-Christians know that if there is no God, then it doesn't matter who you sleep with, how you party, or how you do business. So the world is chugging along at 80 miles an hour stealing, killing, and destroying because about 60-80 years ago, the Church by and large announced that the Bible isn't really God's Word and even if it is, God's a senile old grandfather who will forgive you no matter what. So this is why church fights over sexuality and morality are public politics. Jesus said, we are the salt of the earth. We are the light of the world. As it stands, we are smoldering candle that isn't giving off much light at all, and that means that all the darkness in the White House and in the Supreme Court and in your State capital building is due to the darkness in the church. We aren't even sure if pastors can identify themselves as sodomites or not. Right, and that's why Pinko Pete Buttigieg is actually showing up in the polls.     This is Toby Sumpter with Crosspolitic News. Revoice 2021 Together met in October 2021 in Dallas to encourage what they call “sexual minorities” within the church to obedience, to reach out evangelistically to LGBTQ people, and to minister to “sexual majority” Christians. The conference featured Eve Tushnet, Preston Sprinkle, Greg Johnson, Misty Irons, Greg Coles, and many other speakers, as well as panels on gender minorities, racial minorities, and women. With an emphasis on community support (reflected in the theme “together”), the speakers called the gathered assembly to be obedient to a biblical sexual ethic, as well as acknowledging the pain that the church has caused to those who identify as LGBTQ.Revoice 2021 positions itself in the theological mainstream, as if the controversies surrounding the conference and movement are purely semantic. The wider evangelical church, for example, by policing the language of people who identify as LGBTQ, are said to erect artificial barriers for entrance into the kingdom of God, akin to those of New Testament era Judaizers. Revoice, as a movement, is prepared to forgive and reach out to those in the church who are complicit in this grave sin, but the church should repent and move on from these kinds of debates for the sake of mission and the witness of the gospel.Rather than a purely semantic disagreement over whether or not to use the word “gay,” the language applied to self-hood and identity by Revoice points to underlying philosophical and theological assumptions that Christians should identify themselves by sexual behavior and inclinations, grounding this identification in a secular gender ideology rather than the Scriptures. Furthermore, by framing the semantic issues as Side A and Side B — referring to “Side A brothers and sisters” — they make the question of sexuality, both behavior and identity, to be adiaphora, a non-essential issue that Christians are free to disagree about. Rather than a “slippery slope,” both the ideology and language that Revoice is embracing will eventually take them over a spiritual cliff.*Note this description has been updated along with the article below on February 8th, 2022. *This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with Journal author Anne Kennedy about her online-exclusive article, “Identity and Obedience in Revoice 2021”. https://www.equip.org/article/identity-and-obedience-in-revoice-2021/This is an online-exclusive from the Christian Research Journal. Is it a sin to be gay? Would you attend a church that has a gay pastor? What does it mean to be gay? There is still a lot of misunderstanding surrounding the term gay and what it means to be a gay Christian. Over the past two programs, Tom Ascol, pastor of a Southern Baptist Church in Cape Coral, Florida, has joined us to discuss two issues currently being debated within the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), the largest Protestant denomination in America. Those issues are: women teaching men and Critical Race Theory, a humanistic perspective on race and society. This week in part 3, we will discuss a third issue—professing Christians who identify as “same sex attracted”. Is it possible to be a Christian and accept desires for homosexuality as “who I am”, even if not acting on those desires (i.e. “celibate”)? This is the assertion of Nate Collins, the Southern Baptist Seminary-trained founder of the Revoice Conference, which seeks to “support and encourage gay, lesbian, bisexual, and other same-sex attracted Christians.”...

Nate Collins and “Revoice” refused to sign the excellent and thoroughly biblical “Nashville Statement.” The Nashville Statement can be viewed here: https://cbmw.org/nashville-statement/Nate Collins was interviewed on the podcast called “Sheologians.” That program can be heard here: http://content.blubrry.com/sheologians/Sheologians-Nate-Collins-Revoice.mp3.If you go to timestamp 1.30 you can hear Nate Collins describe himself as a “gay man” who is married to a woman and that he has 3 sons. To hear Nate Collins’s reasons for refusing to sign the “Nashville Statement,” go to time-stamp: 6.30 and listen for a few minutes. Specifically, here is a transcription of what Nate Collins says about the Nashville Statement and how it prompted him to found the Revoice organization:"Probably the thing that kicked it off in my mind was when the Nashville Statement came out. A lot of us felt that the Nashville Statement unfairly excluded people like me, people like Wesley Hill, people who would loosely be related to the Gay Christian movement. … I felt like there was some excluding going on and some foreclosing conversations by this event. … The idea for Revoice came in the aftermath of that. I thought, “ya know what? There needs to be some community that will welcome anybody who does not identify as straight, who has some complexity in the way they think about their gender and sexuality. And let’s welcome each other. Let’s have a place where we can gather together and enjoy each other’s company and find a new community.”What was “excluding” about the Nashville Statement? The statement consists of 14 articles, each of which has an affirmation and a denial. Here is what Nate Collins and Revoice did not like: Article 7: WE AFFIRM that self-conception as male or female should be defined by God’s holy purposes in creation and redemption as revealed in Scripture. WE DENY that adopting a homosexual or transgender self-conception is consistent with God’s holy purposes in creation and redemption. Article 8: WE AFFIRM that people who experience sexual attraction for the same sex may live a rich and fruitful life pleasing to God through faith in Jesus Christ, as they, like all Christians, walk in purity of life. WE DENY that sexual attraction for the same sex is part of the natural goodness of God’s original creation, or that it puts a person outside the hope of the gospel. Article 10: WE AFFIRM that it is sinful to approve of homosexual immorality or transgenderism and that such approval constitutes an essential departure from Christian faithfulness and witness. WE DENY that the approval of homosexual immorality or transgenderism is a matter of moral indifference about which otherwise faithful Christians should agree to disagree. Article 13: WE AFFIRM that the grace of God in Christ enables sinners to forsake transgender self-conceptions and by divine forbearance to accept the God-ordained link between one’s biological sex and one’s self-conception as male or female. WE DENY that the grace of God in Christ sanctions self-conceptions that are at odds with God’s revealed will. These precious biblical and Christian truths spelled out in these particular articles of the Nashville Statement are, in point of fact, denied repeatedly and emphatically by the speakers at the Revoice Conference.

After Exodus International, the largest and most prominent ministry to address homosexuality, closed its doors in 2013, the public, both Christian and secular, became more skeptical about the possibility of homosexuals going straight. As a result, a different approach developed, one in which someone who was Christian but same sex attracted could still identify himself as gay but also hold the historic, orthodox biblical view on sexuality. This new approach began showing itself through the writings of authors and teachers Wesley Hill, Nate Collins, Eve Tushnet, Gregory Coles, and Preston Sprinkle, among others. This approach was highlighted at the July 2018 Revoice Conference in St. Louis, a conference that underscored the chasm between those viewing homosexuality as a sin and identity to be renounced, versus those viewing it as a sin to commit but an identity to embrace. Gay Christians were the targeted participants of the conference, and many within the Christian church applauded. Many voiced concerns as well, particularly about the terms the conference employed. In addition to gay Christians, it referred to homosexuals as a sexual minority, advocated spiritual friendships as ways of satisfying unmet needs for deep bonding, extolled the community gay Christians created, and pondered the prophetic voice they had when rebuking the churchs idolatrous emphasis on marriage and family. The conference was birthed by a void felt decades ago when samesex attracted believers felt they had no resource for ministry and support. While Exodus International met that need for years, its closing reintroduced the void, adding to it the question as to whether or not change is possible for Christians wrestling with homosexual temptations. Since much of the terminology used at Revoice squares poorly with Scripture, its terms should be avoided but its participants listened to as they describe a struggle the church should acknowledge. In so doing, Christians should reject the labels Revoice has proposed, while accepting the challenge to respond to their needs

With so many Christians capitulating to the culture, it has never been more important to understand issues of sexuality from a biblical perspective. Joe Dallas has been our lead expert on the subject at the Christian Research Institute for decades, and once again he joins Hank to discuss articles he has written for the Christian Research Journal about the Revoice Conference, the new film Boy Erased, and whether or not the United States is closer to a state-controlled church. The Bible isn't shy about sex, leaving Christians without an excuse not to understand issues of sexuality and communicate a Christian perspective with conscience and conviction. Topics discussed include: how important is the issue of human sexuality to our culture? (3:00); is it intolerant and violent to hold traditional views of marriage and heterosexuality? (4:55); are issues of human sexuality leading to greater levels of “big brother” and government control? (7:40); why are so many Christians capitulating to the culture when it comes to issues of homosexuality and sexuality in general? (10:05); discussing the article by Joe Dallas, “Homosexuality and Modern Ministry,” as well as the ministry that Joe was once president of: Exodus International (12:00); is the church supposed to be offensive in the name of truth? (17:15); what is the Revoice Conference, and what is their mission? (18:35); discussing the question presented at the Revoice Conference: “What does queer culture (and specifically queer literature and theory) have to offer us who follow Christ? What queer treasure, honor, and glory will be brought into the New Jerusalem at the end of time? (Revelation 21:24-26)” (23:10); using language as a tool for progress, such as the moniker of “gay Christian,” making homosexuality and Christianity seem compatible (25:50); discussing the term spiritual friendship, as promoted at the Revoice Conference and in the book Spiritual Friendship: Finding Love in the Church as a Celibate Gay Christian (28:15); discussing sin and issues of human sexuality that affect all of us and the problem with putting a positive spin on sinful tendencies (31:25); the problem with people proclaiming that homosexuality is a gift from God (35:45); what is conversion therapy, and what is the problem with conversion therapy? (38:00); discussing the new film Boy Erased and whether Christians in general are being unfairly portrayed in Boy Erased (41:30); the new article in the Christian Research Journal titled “Solo Sex and the Christian,” discussing the sinful mindset of masturbation (46:10); why all transformation begins with repentance and obedience (52:35); the Bible isn't shy about sex, so how can we as Christians be better at addressing issues of sexuality in the church and with our families? (56:40); an update on California House Bill AB-2943 and whether a state-controlled church is imminent in the United States (59:45); the great evil of pedophilia, and what it means when those who take the sacred name of Christ are involved in it (1:02:50); the sadness of how the controversies within the Catholic church are tarnishing the name of good Catholics and Christianity as a whole, as well as diminishing the good work being done by Catholics worldwide (1:04:55); Speaking of Homosexuality: Discussing the Issues with Kindness and Clarity by Joe Dallas (1:07:10); seeking the peace that passes all understanding through Christ (1:10:50); why Joe Dallas wrote The Game Plan: The Men's 30-Day Strategy for Attaining Sexual Integrity (1:16:20); the Sacrament of Confession and how it relates to issues of accountability in the church (1:18:30); and how pro-gay advocates misinterpret the Bible and revise the truth to fit their agenda (1:21:35).

Hodges and Vowell discuss the Revoice Conference to be held in late July, a conference to address how the Church can minister to those who are homosexually attracted but celibate. They raise and discuss the question of whether or not it is meaningful to speak of "Gay-Christians." Is there any prefix to "Christian" that contributes to the identity of a faithful believer? Is it meaningful to speak of an "adulterous Christian" or "kleptomaniac Christian"? Where exactly is the sin in sexual sin? Is it in the action but not the predisposition? Is homosexual attraction a sin? Or is it only a temptation? Is there a difference between attraction and temptation?

Surprise! A Conference for Gay Christians Has Sparked Controversy

Here’s how the Revoice Conference describes itself: “Supporting, encouraging, and empowering gay, lesbian, same-sex-attracted, and other LGBT Christians so they can flourish while observing the historic, Christian doctrine of marriage and sexuality.” (Read Quick to Listen host Mark Galli’s interview with its founder.) Since the website first went up, many in the evangelical Twitter world and blogosphere have debated the merits of the conference and of the “spiritual friendship” movement in which the conference is grounded. Some are concerned that “supporting and encouraging” Christians of these “sexual minorities” (as the website names them) is a slippery slope ending in a liberal, relativistic Christianity that has lost its ethical moorings. Others believe that if one observes “the historic, Christian doctrine of marriage,” Christians of any orientation should be able to gather together and talk about their concerns—and thus be supported and encouraged by one another. At stake in these conversations: the debate over whether same-sex attraction in itself is a sin—or if only the acting on that attraction is the sin. “We’ve all heard sermons that say, ‘If you’re being tempted, that’s not sin. It’s only sin if you give into the temptation,’” said Phillip Cary, a professor of philosophy at Eastern University. “Let’s call this the soft line on temptation.” But it turns out that this view isn’t necessarily one that’s been taught by the Protestant greats. “Luther and Calvin and their friends took a hard line on this. They said that the desire that makes up our temptation is already sin, even before we give in or consent to this,” Cary said. And turns out Augustine had his own ideas on the topic. Cary joined associate digital media producer Morgan Lee and editor in chief Mark Galli to discuss how the Bible defines temptation, why it’s hard for Christians to disentangle sin and temptation, and what it means when some of the pillars of faith reached radically different conclusions.

Is it possible to be a “gay Christian”? This is David Wheaton, host of The Christian Worldview. The upcoming evangelical Revoice Conference says yes. Their mission is: “to encourage, support, and empower gay, lesbian, and other same-sex-attracted Christians so they can experience the life-giving character of the historic, Christian sexual ethic.” But the Bible says “… neither fornicators, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals…will inherit the kingdom of God. Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. When one is born again, sinful identity and desire are in the past. Now sin is to be overcome through your new identity with Christ. Hear more at TheChristianWorldview.org. ..

We laughed a lot on this one. We cracked up, and went to deep heart places with Nate Collins, special guest, author, and president and founder of the Revoice Conference. We chatted about starstruck moments (who almost got taken down by Francis Chan's security team, hmmm, LAURIE?!), vulnerability, and giving the historically Christian LGBT+ conversation a new voice. A favorite quote: "The way the gospel is good news for me now," Nate said, "is by living transparently. When that requires vulnerability, then being vulnerable. I've experienced so much grace in being known. And shame in being not known. [I was] put in the shadows, or ran to the shadows myself because I was afraid of transparency or vulnerability."
