Join me as I interview guitarist Alejandro Gomez about his new band: Dreams As Nightmares. Hailing from the city of sin, Las Vegas, Nevada, Dreams As Nightmares is a fresh voice in metal-core, influenced by genre-related bands like ERRA and Tesseract, while dipping into the melodic essence from artists like Dio and Alice in Chains. Their music blends technical finesse and raw emotion, offering a sound that's both powerful and deeply relatable, crafting a sonic space where fans can feel seen and supported through the embrace of tough times and challenges. Their debut single "Into The Storm" (2025) sets the bar as the starting point of a journey where members and fans will be a towering force to be reckoned with by the world. Dreams As Nightmares was conceived in 2023 as the project of guitarist Alejandro Gomez, after having parted ways with his past projects Image Intent and Damaged Savage. Following the creation of the project, he joined forces with Rich Thomas from Auralight (AZ) and A Suffocating Lie (CA) and independent singer/songwriter Connor Hetzel, adding a powerful vocal duo, combining raw screaming with prominent cleans, and opening the doors to a wider audience. Subsequently, the addition of guitarist Thomas Velasquez of Tree Frog Express and The Noir Movement made the band a creative powerhouse, combining different musical backgrounds, leading to the refinement of the band's catalog. With the late addition of drummer Mike McGuinness, the band completed its lineup to begin their live music endeavor. https://www.dreamsasnightmares.com/
Winemaker Dan Barwick with Melissa Galliani. Winemaker Dan Barwick is back on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. Dan is the winemaker at Trecini Winery. He has been on CWC before, the most recent was this other episode recorded on Aug. 25, 2023. Our regular co-host Dan Berger is on vacation this week. Right away Steve Jaxon is loving Dan Barwick's Sauvignon Blanc. It's made with all Sonoma County fruit, mostly Russian River. It has rich flavors of apricot and mango. "Easy to drink," says Dan. Trecini has been bottling wine for 25 years. Dan took several courses at UC Davis and at Santa Rosa Junior College in winemaking including courses from Rich Thomas. He was at the forefront of changing viticulture in Sonoma County in ways which improved the quality of Sonoma County wines. He taught that you had to be in the vineyard to get to understand the vines. This helps him make decisions about pruning and harvesting. Sauvignon Blanc Dan says that Sauvignon Blanc is his favorite wine to make. He can make blends with fruit from different vineyards, to assemble the flavors he wants. It's hard to believe that such a good wine sells for $15. In addition to Sauvignon Blanc, Trecini also makes Chardonnay, Russian River Pinot Noir and Merlot, too. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Rodney Strong for info on the 2024 Summer Concert series. Dan Barwick recently visited Croatia, staying in a town called Rovinj. The wine and food and the whole scene was incredibly beautiful. Dan suggests everyone put Croatia on the bucket list. It is on the coast so there is a lot of seafood. The local olive oil is very fine. A delicious glass of local wine will cost 2 or 3 dollars. Click the logo to visit Davis Bynum Wines. Dan Barwick talks about his early experience working in the food hall at Harrod's in London, where he was exposed to all the best of everything, including wine. The chocolates were right next to the wine department. He worked there from the age of 18 to 27.

Mike Kobler, winemaker from Kobler Estate Winery is Tom Simoneau's guest today on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. He tells the story about how his grandparents retired in the 1980s and purchased a 4-acre property in Dry Creek. His grandfather had to travel to South America for a final year of work, while his grandmother studied viticulture at Santa Rosa JC. She also hired Rich Thomas, who was a teacher. They began with Sauvignon Blanc and sold the grapes to well-known wineries. Mike and his parents moved to California from Virginia to be near their grandparents. The family then got involved in the vineyard. Mike was six years old and he remembers hating having to go out and prune vines in January in the rain. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. They are tasting his 2021 Gewürztraminer which is completely dry, but not austere, because it has acidity in a range where it is soft and gentle on the tongue, says Dan Berger. Join the Rodney Strong mailing list to receive special offers, information on new releases, and more. Mike describes his path to winemaking as unusual. He knew he did not want to go into engineering, and was attracted to economics. Consumer preferences are at the heart of that. While his fellow college students were drinking beer, he drank wine. He father had made wine as an amateur for 30 years. He has known the Bacigalupi family since his school days. He started with 500 cases of Syrah in 2010. Now he makes many others. He explains how they have kept costs down as they taste the Chardonnay. Their properties are actually in three AVAs, Sonoma Coast, Green Valley and Russian River Valley.
It's time for our once-monthly catch up with farmers on the regenerative path. This week Jez Fredenburgh talks to two farmers at different stages – Rich Thomas, from Herefordshire, is a sheep and pedigree beef farmer with apple orchards and arable crops, and who has been introducing mob grazing and agroforestry over the last 5-6 years, and has more recently eliminated nitrogen fertiliser. John Pawsey, from Suffolk, is in Rich's words, an organic farming 'rock star', who has been organic and following a systems approach for around 20 odd years. Most of John's farm is under a six-year rotation, including varieties of wheat, oats and spelt for milling, barley for malting, beans, and some novel and speciality crops, including chia, lentils. He introduced sheep into the rotation a few years back.
Rich Thomas shares what was happening on Hilton Head during the post civil war era through the founding of the Hilton Head company and the creation of Sea Pines by Charles Fraser. Rich explains how logging, phosphate, turpentine and agriculture thrived in the area until the building of the first bridge in 1956 and development of the island into a tourist destination.

Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States when 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. General Gordon Granger informed the enslaved that the Civil War had ended and they were free. What many people do not realize is that emancipation of the enslaved started right here on Hilton Head Island. In this episode we talk with Rich Thomas about what happend on HHI during the Civil War and how President Lincoln was not the first to order an emancipation of the enslaved. Rich weaves a tale of the trials and tribulations of Mitchelville and its catastrophic ending. The story of Mitchelville is another example of how a small sea island was at the center of American history.

Stu Smith, co-founder of Smith-Madrone Winery, joins Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger today. He will be on Zoom from his home on the vineyard in upper Napa Valley. The last time he was on California Wine Country was May 3, 2017, here is a link to that podcast episode. Before they begin talking to Stu Smith, Dan Berger has brought another “cellar dweller” to the show, an old bottle from Dan Berger's massive personal wine cellar, to open and taste. It's always a mystery when these bottles are opened. This cellar dweller is a 2009 Semillon, which Dan calls an unusual grape variety. It's usually picked very early. It would be good with seafood as long as it's not with a cream sauce. It has flavor that you won't get in any other grape variety. “I love this, it's fascinating and unique,” says Steve. Stu Smith (photo by Meg Smith) Stu Smith joins Steve and Dan on Zoom. He founded his winery with his brother at the age 22 in 1971. He first walked the property in the Fall of 1970. It was a different world. Wine had not yet become a “major issue” for Napa and Sonoma Counties. It was provincial and he was in the backroads. Dan mentions that it was only 5 years after Robert Mondavi first planted. They are located in St. Helena, at the junction of the road that leads over the ridge between Napa and Sonoma counties, at between 1300-2000 feet elevation. They suffered moderate damage in the Glass fire, and had to replace some equipment. Several trees have to be removed and it's a lot of work, but “we are fortunate that we didn't lose anything substantial.” There is ample documentation of their fire damage at the Smith-Madrone website. They do very little irrigation and they harvest their Chardonnay a little earlier than others, so its acidity is strong. “We're a little bit more European in style than Californian. We praise the concept of balance complexity elegance restraint finesse. We tend to think that wines should give pleasure, they should be hedonistic. (...) (We) believe that getting the vintage into the glass of wine is our job. We vintage date to celebrate the diversity of the vintage dates…” The high elevation, after hundreds of years of erosion, the soil is very lean, and the soil profile is completely different than the valley. There is very little water. Dan explains that it's tricky to grow grapes at this altitude. The soil is not particularly fertile so the yields are held down naturally. They rarely go over three tons to the acre. Some friends of Stu with Zinfandel acres in the central valley go 24 tons to the acre. Dan Berger points out that this is very reliant on how the wine reacts to its soil conditions. Stu mentions Virgil's treatise on farming and quotes the Latin, Bacchus amat colles, which means Bacchus loves the hills. He explains, the wines that come from hillside vineyards are more distinctive because the vines have to struggle and the berries are smaller, making a higher skin-to-juice ratio. Irrigation was not practiced until the mid-60s in California, when they irrigated to prevent frost. So farmers had water in the summer too, and irrigated. It made more production, but of common quality. They have held back their 2017 until now, compared to many 2019s that are in stores already. Stu tells his story of growing up in Southern California and attending Berkeley in the mid-60s. He liked wine already then and took an introductory wine class at UC Davis and he did not want to go back to LA after college. His second attempt to put a syndicated partnership together worked and the rest is history. (The Smith-Madrone website has a lot on this subject as well.) Stu Smith also taught enology for a long time at Santa Rosa Junior College, working with the great Rich Thomas. They also taste the Smith-Madrone Riesling, which Dan Berger says comes from "a very blessed piece of property." It is an astounding wine, Dan tastes slate, jasmine, and wild juniper.

This episode of California Wine Country was originally recorded and published on Dec. 20, 2017. Carol Shelton was last on this show in February of this year. There is no new episode recorded today, Nov. 6, 2019, as we recover from the aftermath of this year's fires in Sonoma County. Please consider making a donation to the Red Cross, which has done so much for Sonoma County again this year to help the community in its time of greatest need. Carol Shelton joins Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country today. For more information visit her website https://www.carolshelton.com/ Dan Berger met Carol Shelton when she was making wines for Windsor Vineyards. They were winning gold medals in a lot of competitions but they were not widely known because they were not readily available at retail. So Dan wrote about how she was taking good fruit and making great wine. She explains how she spent 20 great years at Windsor after graduating with her degree in enology, until 2000 when she founded her own winery. Her Wild Thing wine is one of Steve Jaxon’s favorite wines. She and her husband lost their house in Larkfield in the October 2017 fires but they are rebuilding. Their homeowner’s association has been proactive to bring in four of five contractors to allow them to get better prices. $220 a square foot instead of $350-500. So the group of builders will do it for a lot closer to the lower figure. Carol Shelton was one of the first dozen women to go through the wine program at UC Davis, graduating in 1978. They taught winemaking but they didn’t teach viticulture so she learned that at Santa Rosa Junior College under Rich Thomas, who has been on the show many times. Steve asks Carol Shelton what made her want to get into the wine business. Her mother taught her to cook from a very young age, and to identify herbs by the smell even before she could read. Her parents offered to pay for her education if she took something scientific that could lead to a good job, but they would not pay for her to study poetry. So she visited a winery and smelled oak saturated with red wine and she decided she wanted to smell that every day at work. Dan says that Carol Shelton joins Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country today is a great discoverer and he gives the example that she was making Carignane in the early 80s when nobody else was. They taste her Wild Thing 2016 Chardonnay from a vineyard that they own. It’s all barrel fermented, no malolactic fermentation. Steve says it is adorable, Dan says it is a very succulent wine and is ready to drink now. It has a little tropical fruit flavor and has a rich mid-palette without any oak character. Carol says they stir the barrels every Wednesday for eight months. Dan says it’s so delicious and is ready to drink now, which is suggested by its screw cap. The next wine tasted is called Coquille Blanc and is a blend of four varieties, mostly Grenache Blanc, and also Roussane, Viognier and Marsanne. Dan admires the complexity and subtlety of this wine and the different characteristics that come from the different grape varieties. Viognier gives you floral components. Grenache Blanc gives some chalky minerality, the Roussanne gives you peach and pear components, but Dan can’t figure out what is Marsanne’s best quality so he asks Carol. It has more peach flavors where the Roussanne has more almond. As this wine ages, they both will give a sweet honey flavor. Steve is surprised that he was thinking almonds just as she mentioned it. The Coquille is Carol’s favorite out of all the wines she makes. Dan says she is lucky because it is hard to get a good vineyard to grow all these grapes and she agrees that even if it is far away, it is worth it. She bottles about 15 or 16 wines right now. She is no longer going to make Pinot Noir but her Zinfandel is so famous that she is concentrating on that now. She tells about how during the fires they fled to thei...
Today on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger, our three guests all come from Santa Rosa Junior College Wine Program. Kevin Sea is the head of the program, Mark Stupich is the winemaker and Cassandra Howard is a student. Cassandra has done the Wine Service and Evaluation program and is now finishing in Wine Business and Marketing. Before that she lived in Asia to learn Chinese and to teach English and became a wine blogger writing about wine in Asia. Steve tells about how the SRJC wine program started in the 1970s with Rich Thomas. He was the original source of knowledge in the county. Today the program continues with an updated curriculum and a more developed wine production. Mark Stupich is the winemaker now. He succeeded Jeff MacBride. They make Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah. Their next project is to build a tasting room. They sell wine to support the program. Even compared to many 4-year colleges, SRJC is a very sophisticated program, says Dan Berger. Even Sonoma State does not offer winemaking, so many students start at SRJC to learn production, then transfer to Sonoma State for a first-class wine business program. There are 225 students in the winemaking program. They have a lot of new equipment, like a full commercial winery. Dan Berger explains that UC Davis and Fresno State make a lot of wine but it is not sold commercially. Since SRJC sells wine commercially, it is make to a higher standard than the other schools. This Saturday July 20 there is free public tasting open house at Shone Farm. Today Dan Berger brought a 1992 Navarro Pinot Noir. At the time it was somewhat experimental. It was slightly brownish and the flavors are amazing, even if the aromas “are a little tired.” You don’t usually hold a Pinot Noir this long. The flavors are still there on this one. Steve asks why Enology isn’t called “wineology.” Dan says, “It’s Greek to me,” and nails it with a wisecrack. Kevin says it’s the Latin root but Dan is actually right about this because it is a Greek root, present in Latin as well as English and in all the neo-Latin languages by the derivatives and adjectives like “enology” and “enological” but not as the noun. The Latin word for wine is “vinum” which is etymologically related to “oinos” the Greek word for wine. Kevin Sea holds a Master’s from UC Davis and a PhD in Biochemistry from UCLA. They are tasting a 2016 Pinot Noir, a 2017 Sauvignon Blanc and a 2017 Chardonnay, all from Shone Farm. Dan sings the praises of the wine program and Shone Farm and says all the community should support it. It is a hallmark for the community, that feels like a small town. Dan affirms that this is a University program at a junior college.

Bill Nachbaur from Acorn Winery is back on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger today. Their first tasting is a 2014 Sangiovese, whose label suggests several Italian food pairings. Dan Berger explains that Sangiovese is a variety that very few Californians want to make, because we get so much sun that we can't avoid having a plump wine. Californians like that the acids will drop out of the wines, but "...this one is a beautiful example of splitting the difference between California ripeness and Chianti's acid-based" flavors. Dan suggests pairing it with wild boar stew or anything with strong flavors. Bill says that the Russian River Valley climate is ideal for this. It's a cooler climate than other Sangiovese growing regions in the US so they can control the acidity to get it super ripe before picking it. Bill says it's the most widely planted grape in Italy. Bill and his wife bought the vineyard in 1990 after working in law, and took viticulture classes at Santa Rosa JC under Rich Thomas. He was first focussed on growing grapes and his first wine was a 1994 Sangiovese. He makes a wine called "Alégria" (happiness in Spanish, close to the Italian Allegria). They have about 26 acres of grapes and they just finished their 29th harvest. Then they taste a 2014 Zinfandel that Steve says is delicious. Bill credits the Russian River Valley cool climate and extra complexity from the "field blend." It is from the oldest part of the vineyard 78% Zinfandel, 10% Petit Syrah and 10% Alicante Bouchet, with the remaining 2% from a mix of other grapes. All their wines are "field blends" which means they grow the grapes together then they pick them together and press and ferment them together. Dan says some Zinfandels get "over-ripe and plummy" but that he likes the black raspberry component in this wine, which works with the other peppery aromatics in the blend. Bill thinks the pepper flavor comes from the Petit Syrah. Next they taste a Dolcetto, another Italian grape that is quite rare in California. It is grown in Piedmont (Piemonte) in north-west Italy. Despite the name of the grape, it makes a dry wine. Dan says to decant it to give it lots of air. Bill says that most Dolcetto in Italy is not oaked or aged, as he does to it. He gives it 18 months in oak. Bill Nachbaur tells about visiting Piedmont and asking winemakers there if they used oak and they replied, "well, our grandfathers didn't do it," so they don't. (That is a prevailing attitude in Italy about a lot of food and wine practices. -cd). Dan Berger tells that very little Dolcetto is grown in California because growers make so much from the familiar varieties that planting a less-well-known grape is too much of a risk. Dan says that Dolcetto has good acid and it works well in blends. It responds well to decanting, to highlight its dry character. Then they taste Medley, which is a combination of 60 varieties that they grow. There is a chart that lists all the varieties. It is a vineyard blend of 20% Zinfandel, 18% Cinsaut, 18% Syrah, 18% Muscats, 10% Dolcetto, 2% Petite Sirah, 2% Alicante Bouschet, 1% Cabernet Franc, 1% Sangiovese, and 10% other varieties. This is the 15th year of Medley, which they started making in 2000. Dan Berger believes that it should not rest for more than 3 or 4 years because its great complex fruit flavors will still be evident. Dan says that Medley could not be made this way in many other regions. For example, in Alexander Valley, the wine would be different. Trying to mix these varieties in the Alexander Valley do not yield such subtle flavors as do the Russian River Valley's cold temperatures, fog and marine influence. They are about a mile from the river and will have fog all morning for many days in the Summer, so they might pick a month later than they would in nearby Dry Creek. It's an example of how great reds can grow in Russian River Valley as well as the white varieties grow there.
