The defenses employed by the Michigan Wolverines, Penn State Nittany Lions and Ohio State Buckeyes are elite. Not only are they the best in the Big 10 but they are among the best in the country. And they are not alone. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Maryland Terps, Iowa Hawkeyes and Wisconsin Badgers all give up less than 20 points per game. We'd argue that the Minnesota Gophers and Nebraska Cornhuskers have had their moments on defense as well. The data proves it: The Big 10 is the best defensive conference in the country. But in the day of high-powered offenses, do great defenses matter when it comes to college football playoff games against fine tuned offenses from other Power 5 conferences? Big 10 teams with great defenses have given up a ton of points in the playoffs. The old saying was, "Defenses win Championships." Do they? We will explore that question. Meanwhile, Tom Allen and the Indiana Hoosiers are struggling on offense. The school fired offensive coordinator Walt Bell and replaced him with former Northern Illinois head coach Rod Carey. The Hoosiers are on their bye week but face the Michigan Wolverines next at the Big House. Finally, we have some more fun with Tuesday Tweets. In Hour 2 of our Monday show today, Brett is joined by Indiana Hoosiers Broadcasting Hall-of-Famer, Don Fischer! Don joins Brett every Monday at 5:20PM for our weekly segment called “Fifteen Minutes with Fisch!” Brett asks Don about what went wrong in the Hoosiers loss to the Maryland Terrapins to start the conversation. Brett and Don then discuss the firing of Offensive Coach Walt Bell over the weekend by the Indiana Hoosiers. We hear from Don his thoughts about Walt being gone, and his replacement, Rod Carey. We believe that Rod Carey is going to be the permanent replacement, with no “interim” being placed next to the position on any releases so far from Indiana. We hear from Don about Rod Carey's career in football up to this point, and what he can bring to the Hoosiers offense for the rest of the season. Are there any specific problems with the team that he can solve this year with half of the season left and the same personnel? Also in the second hour of The Sports Rush, Brett discusses some of the storylines in the NFL including what's going on with the Bengals being absolutely terrible against the Titans, and more. All that and more in Hour 2 of The Sports Rush!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Locked On Hoosiers - Daily Podcast On Indiana Hoosiers Football & Basketball
Tom Allen and Rod Carey spoke on Monday for the first time since the latter took over as the new Indiana Hoosiers football offensive line coach. While it was a necessary change for IU after a putrid performance against the Michigan Wolverines, it likely won't lead to immediate changes against the Maryland Terrapins this weekend. On today's episode of Locked on Hoosiers, Jacob Rude (@JacobRude) recaps Monday's weekly press conference for Allen and Carey. Both gave details on the firing of Darren Hiller and where IU football goes from here. Considering how bad IU's offense has looked this year, it's also fair to wonder how much having Donaven McCulley at QB would have helped this season. While it's still very early in his transition, he's struggled to make a big impact yet as a wide receiver. The show wraps by looking at the media's preseason men's basketball Big Ten honors, ranging from predicting the conference champion to player of the year. Indiana was picked as the champions while Trayce Jackson-Davis narrowly missed out on preseason player of the year honors. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Ohio State moved up a spot to No. 2, receiving 20 first-place votes. Clemson also moved up a spot to take over the No. 4 spot held by Michigan. The undefeated Wolverines are No. 5. NCAAFB – Hoosiers fire O-line coach after another poor game Indiana coach Tom Allen has fired offensive line coach and run game coordinator Darren Hiller. The rare midseason move comes one day after the Hoosiers rushed for 29 yards and allowed seven sacks in a 31-10 loss to No. 4 Michigan. Former Indiana player Rod Carey will replace Hiller for the rest of this season. Hiller was in his sixth season with Indiana and had survived a staff shakeup following last season’s dismal 2-10 mark Golf – PGA – Tom Kim wins in Vegas as Cantlay falls apart on final hole Tom Kim has won the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas. That makes him the first player since Tiger Woods in 1996 with two PGA Tour victories before turning 21. But he got plenty of help from Patrick Cantlay. They were tied for the lead on the 18th hole when Cantlay went into a desert bush, into the pond and made triple bogey. Kim shot 67 and completed a bogey-free week at the TPC Summerlin. He moves to No. 15 in the world and becomes the highest-ranked Asian-born player in golf. Kim also won the Wyndham Championship in August. Golf – LPGA – Ewart Shadoff finally wins on LPGA Tour in her 246th attempt Jodi Ewart Shadoff can finally say she’s an LPGA Tour winner. The 34-year-old from England held on for a one-shot victory in the LPGA Mediheal Championship. She went wire-to-wire for her first win in her 246th start. But it wasn’t easy. Paula Reto made up the four-shot deficit in six holes and had a one-shot lead going to the back nine. Reto made a pair of bogeys late in the round. That paved the way for Ewart Shadoff. She shot a 71 in the final round and wound up winning by one shot over former U.S. Women’s Open champion Yuka Saso. NHL – Lightning suspend defenseman Ian Cole pending investigation The Tampa Bay Lightning are suspending defenseman Ian Cole pending an investigation into allegations made on social media that he sexually abused a woman when she was a minor. The team said it was fully cooperating with the NHL on an investigation and that it takes the allegations very seriously. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told The Associated Press earlier Sunday the league had launched an investigation. Daly added the league had no prior knowledge of the allegations until they were posted on social media. NASCAR – Bell wins Charlotte as champion Larson bumped from playoffs Christopher Bell saved his title chances with an overtime win Sunday on the road course at Charlotte Motor Speedway in a stunning finish that knocked reigning NASCAR champion Kyle Larson from the playoffs. Bell entered the race 11th in the standings with four drivers set to be eliminated as NASCAR’s playoff field was trimmed to eight. He took the lead in overtime and drove away as all the drama was further in the field for the final transfer spot into the round of eight. Chase Briscoe bulldozed his way to a ninth-place finish to knock Larson out of the playoffs by two points. Also eliminated were Daytona 500 winner Austin Cindric, Daniel Suarez and Larson’s teammate, Alex Bowman. Kyle Dugger returned a fumble 59 yards for a touchdown for the Patriots as the defense and ground game gave Zappe plenty of support. The rookie completed 17 of 21 passes for 188 yards with Mac Jones out for the second straight week with an ankle injury and backup Brian Hoyer on injured reserve following a concussion. Matt Judon had a pair of sacks for New England, which held Detroit’s top-ranked offense without a touchdown for the first time this season. Detroit was shut out for the first time since 2020, and this was its worst such loss since falling 35-0 to the St. Louis Rams in 2001. The Lions now have a bye and will hope their offense gets healthier during the break. Detroit was missing running back D’Andre Swift and receiver D.J. Chark. Georgia thumped Auburn 42-10 on Saturday. The Tide escaped an upset bid at home by Texas A&M with Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Bryce Young sidelined by injury. Temple vs. Rutgers Pick Prediction 9/2/2021 by Tony T. Temple vs. Rutgers—College football pick is Rutgers Scarlet Knights -14. Rutgers showed improvement under Greg Shiano last season. Offensively they put up 26.7 points per game which was 13 more in 2019. Every game was against a Big Ten school. They return 21 starters from last year and all on offense. Temple finished 1-6 last year seeing drop off on both sides of the football. They break in a first year starting quarterback and all three are first year starters on the defensive live. Secondary also inexperienced. Final two road games last year resulted in losses by 25 at UCF and 35 at Tulane. Once a strong defensive program the team has slipped under head coach Rod Carey. Last year the Owls allowed 37.1 points and 433 yards per game with 4.8 yards per rush attempt. On offense they were hurt at quarterback with transfers. Play Rutgers -14.
Philadelphia Area College Football Preview: Temple University Owls Head Coach Rod Carey The Temple Owls were the only area college football team to play in the fall in 2020. It didn't go real well. COVID-19 and injuries played havoc with the schedule and the roster and Temple struggled to a 1-6 record. But the Owls and head coach Rod Carey are looking to turn things around here in 2021 and make some noise in the American Athletic Conference. Temple will open its 2021 season on Thursday September 2nd with a non-conference road game against Rutgers. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week's OwlScoop.com podcast includes part of our exclusive interview with Temple running backs coach Gabe Infante. The former four-time state champion head coach at St. Joseph's Prep enters his third season on head coach Rod Carey's staff and his first as the Owls' recruiting coordinator. In the audio you'll hear in this week's podcast, Infante talked about Temple's recruiting philosophy, what he envisions as their recruiting footprint and how he's worked with Carey and the staff to establish the direction of the program when it comes to recruiting. Additionally, John DiCarlo, Kyle Gauss, Sam Cohn and Dante Collinelli reviewed this week's media availability and talked about the position battles at tight end, running back, BUBO and placekicker, where there appears to be some competition between Rory Bell, Noah Botsford and Liam Hart.
Sonny Dykes and SMU are heading in the right direction. The Mustangs are a dark horse to win the conference and have been making waves off of the field as well. Rod Carey and Temple? Not so much. The Owls are committed to him for the long run, but there's so much work to do. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

At a time when the Owls have seen several players enter the transfer portal, including quarterback Anthony Russo, linebacker Isaiah Graham-Mobley, defensive tackle Ifeanyi Maijeh and offensive lineman Vincent Picozzi, Tyler said he has no intention of following in their footsteps and intends to return for his final season of eligibility, one made possible by the NCAA to accommodate players due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "Absolutely," Tyler told OwlScoop.com. "I'm not going nowhere." Temple finished 1-6 this season in a pandemic-shortened season, and Tyler, who was awarded a single digit No. 3 prior to the start of the season, played in just six games this season and missed the ECU game with an injury. The team's veteran defensive back finished with 33 tackles, two passes defended and two fumble recoveries. His decision to return will be critically important for a Temple team looking to rebound on both sides of the ball, particularly with a defense that will need an experienced leader to mentor younger safeties like Alex Odom, M.J. Griffin and Trey Blair. "Temple just belongs to me," Tyler said. "Last year would have been my last year if it wasn't for COVID, so we had the blessing of me being able to play another year of college football, and I wouldn't think of going nowhere else." Tyler cited his relationship with Temple head coach Rod Carey and safeties coach Tyler Yelk as one of the reasons why he's staying on North Broad Street and not following in the footsteps of some of his other former teammates who decided to leave. "Out of all the position coaches that I've had since I've been at Temple, Coach Yelk has been by far one of the best coaches that I've had. His technique, his attention to detail, him just making me become an NFL safety. I feel like me getting to the next level, he'll be the perfect guy to get me there if I follow his instructions and do what I've got to do. "And having Coach Carey behind my back ... Coach Carey, he's a player-led coach, so I feel I can learn a lot from Coach Carey and he can learn a lot from me. I just kind of have that connection with him. I feel like I don't want to just leave him out to dry for the last year, and I wouldn't want to go nowhere anyway." Tyler talked a lot about how he has progressed and matured as a player, offered insight into the mood of the program after a frustrating season, and shared details about a childhood that saw him finally find a home with his adopted guardians after going through several foster homes.
