Big shot Bob gets it done in Canada. We start the show discussing his win at the RBC Canadian Open along with Yuka Saso's victory at the US Women's Open. Then we get into the main topic stemming from Jay's appearance in US Open Final qualifying and the "Longest Day in Golf." Jay gives us a breakdown of the day and playing with Marc Leishman. This gets us into a little LIV discussion based on some things Marc said to Jay. Of course, a rollback debate breaks out again after the stories Jay tells about his other playing opponent. We cap the show with our picks for this week's Memorial Tournament at Jack's place.

We love it when we can do the pod from a golf club, and today we're in Melbourne's sandbelt at the stunning Southern Golf Club to celebrate the unveiling of a statue of the legendary Bob Shearer. It looks incredible, we've put some pics on our socials. Nick and Mark have a couple of cracking stories about Bob, including one where Victoria Golf Course was famously deemed 'unplayable' in Round 1 of the 2002 Australian Open with Bob, Mark and Richard Ball. Mark explains what happens to them all on the tee to cause the days play to be cancelled, leading to that famous picture of Peter Thomson dropping the ball to check the green. It was quite a dark day for Australian golf. After the turn we chat with the head honch at Southern, Brad Robb, and find out the backstory and hear some more stories about Bob.Onto some golf news from the past week. Minjee Lee. We love her so it was disappointing to see her fall away in the US Open at the weekend. She was doing so well, but then a rough few holes knocked her out of contention. However credit to Yuka Saso who played beautifully to win the tournament. What kind of Chair will Ian Baker-Finch make? Nick and Mark discuss what the PGA of Australia need, and what his style might be.Nick loved the story of Robert MacIntyre winning the Canadian Open at the weekend, with his Dad Dougie as his caddie. Great scenes, plenty of emotion. Fantastic stuff. We call pod listener Pete from Western Australia, who has a comment of some recent advice that Mark Allen gave here. Pete tells us the impact that it has had on his game. It's a ripping story. After the turn we have a chat with Brad Robb, the General Manager at Southern Golf Club. He talks us through how the statue of Bob Shearer came about, who they commissioned to design it and why, and some of the work they've been doing on the course to make it even better. Southern have been working with our mate Mike Cocking at OCM which means you know the outcome will be stunning.Nick counts down his Top 5 divorces in golf. One may surprise you.Plenty of feedback, lots on young Eden from Coffs Harbour, far too much to read out, but we touch on a couple. And a couple of great questions for Nick and Mark.Nick takes us around the world with the PING global results, and for our mates at the new watchMynumbers app, Mark has a masterclass inspired by Minjee Lee and something he saw her doing in the US Open.A big thanks to our Talk Birdie partners:PING, they'll help you play your best, you can see your local golf shop or professional for a PING club fitting;the new watchMynumbers app, the most powerful data based golf app in the world, download from the App Store ;and the Golf Clearance Outlet, great prices on the best gear. Andy and Brendan come in fresh off the weekend with lots of meaningful golf to digest. So naturally, they start with the Champions Tour and Caleb Williams prognostications. Then they eventually get to Yuka Saso's U.S. Women's Open win at Lancaster, where she put it into overdrive on the back nine of a course that provided a “championship test” as it is understood or lusted about. This gets to the subject of the future Women's Open sites, and whew are they good and illuminate the fewer places the men's game can go. Then they compare the comments of Yuka being far from home with Bobby Mac's adjustment to the PGA Tour and his one-week trip with his dad on the bag. They revel in that story, and also get into the subject of a CBS drone apparently annoying him. Did the pilot go to far or was Bobby pulling a rabbit-ear Monty? Last, they get to a wide-ranging interview Joe Ogilvie, now of the PGA Tour Board, did with Golfweek and react to a handful of quotes from this prominent person in a position of power.

NFL – National Football League – Week 5 Yesterday New England Patriots 29, Detroit Lions 0 Minnesota Vikings 29, Chicago Bears 22 Patriots 29, Lions 0 – Stevenson, Patriots’ D back Zappe in 29-0 win over Lions Rookie Bailey Zappe threw a touchdown pass in his first career start, Rhamondre Stevenson rushed for a career-high 161 yards, and the New England Patriots overwhelmed the Detroit Lions 29-0. Kyle Dugger returned a fumble 59 yards for a touchdown for the Patriots as the defense and ground game gave Zappe plenty of support. The rookie completed 17 of 21 passes for 188 yards with Mac Jones out for the second straight week with an ankle injury and backup Brian Hoyer on injured reserve following a concussion. Matt Judon had a pair of sacks for New England, which held Detroit’s top-ranked offense without a touchdown for the first time this season. Lions quarterback Jared Goff was 19 of 35 for 229 yards, but his one interception was returned for a touchdown. Vikings 29, Bears 22 – Cousins, Vikings snap to life with late TD, beat Bears 29-22 The Minnesota Vikings snapped out of their mid-game slump just in time to beat the Chicago Bears 29-22. Kirk Cousins scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 2:26 remaining on Minnesota’s fifth third-down conversion of its go-ahead drive. The Vikings are 4-1 and alone in first place in the NFC North. Justin Jefferson finished with a career-high 12 catches for 154 yards, and Dalvin Cook rushed for 94 yards and two scores for the Vikings. Justin Fields went 15 for 21 for a season-high 208 yards and his first touchdown pass in 15 quarters for the Bears. They are 2-3. Other Week 5 Scores Indianapolis 12, Denver 9, OT N.Y. A week after putting up a season-high 45 points in their overtime loss to Seattle, the Lions were blanked 29-0 by the New England Patriots. Detroit was shut out for the first time since 2020, and this was its worst such loss since falling 35-0 to the St. Louis Rams in 2001. The Lions now have a bye and will hope their offense gets healthier during the break. Detroit was missing running back D’Andre Swift and receiver D.J. Chark. Trent Grisham hit an RBI single and made a terrific catch in center field that helped the Padres take the best-of-three National League wild-card series two games to one. Austin Nola and Juan Soto each had a two-run single. San Diego advanced to face the top-seeded Los Angeles Dodgers in a best-of-five Division Series beginning Tuesday. The Crimson Tide slid to No. 3. The Bulldogs received 32 first-place votes and 1,535 points in the Top 25 to easily reclaim No. 1 on Sunday after being just two points behind Alabama for the No. 2 spot last week. Georgia thumped Auburn 42-10 on Saturday. The Tide escaped an upset bid at home by Texas A&M with Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Bryce Young sidelined by injury. Ohio State moved up a spot to No. 2, receiving 20 first-place votes.  Clemson also moved up a spot to take over the No. 4 spot held by Michigan.  The undefeated Wolverines are No. 5. NCAAFB – Hoosiers fire O-line coach after another poor game Indiana coach Tom Allen has fired offensive line coach and run game coordinator Darren Hiller. The rare midseason move comes one day after the Hoosiers rushed for 29 yards and allowed seven sacks in a 31-10 loss to No. 4 Michigan. Former Indiana player Rod Carey will replace Hiller for the rest of this season. Hiller was in his sixth season with Indiana and had survived a staff shakeup following last season’s dismal 2-10 mark Golf – PGA – Tom Kim wins in Vegas as Cantlay falls apart on final hole Tom Kim has won the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas. That makes him the first player since Tiger Woods in 1996 with two PGA Tour victories before turning 21. But he got plenty of help from Patrick Cantlay. They were tied for the lead on the 18th hole when Cantlay went into a desert bush, into the pond and made triple bogey. Kim shot 67 and completed a bogey-free week at the TPC Summerlin. He moves to No. 15 in the world and becomes the highest-ranked Asian-born player in golf. Kim also won the Wyndham Championship in August. Golf – LPGA – Ewart Shadoff finally wins on LPGA Tour in her 246th attempt Jodi Ewart Shadoff can finally say she’s an LPGA Tour winner. The 34-year-old from England held on for a one-shot victory in the LPGA Mediheal Championship. She went wire-to-wire for her first win in her 246th start. But it wasn’t easy. Paula Reto made up the four-shot deficit in six holes and had a one-shot lead going to the back nine. Reto made a pair of bogeys late in the round. That paved the way for Ewart Shadoff. She shot a 71 in the final round and wound up winning by one shot over former U.S. Women’s Open champion Yuka Saso. NHL – Lightning suspend defenseman Ian Cole pending investigation The Tampa Bay Lightning are suspending defenseman Ian Cole pending an investigation into allegations made on social media that he sexually abused a woman when she was a minor. The team said it was fully cooperating with the NHL on an investigation and that it takes the allegations very seriously. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told The Associated Press earlier Sunday the league had launched an investigation. Daly added the league had no prior knowledge of the allegations until they were posted on social media. NASCAR – Bell wins Charlotte as champion Larson bumped from playoffs Christopher Bell saved his title chances with an overtime win Sunday on the road course at Charlotte Motor Speedway in a stunning finish that knocked reigning NASCAR champion Kyle Larson from the playoffs. Bell entered the race 11th in the standings with four drivers set to be eliminated as NASCAR’s playoff field was trimmed to eight. He took the lead in overtime and drove away as all the drama was further in the field for the final transfer spot into the round of eight. Chase Briscoe bulldozed his way to a ninth-place finish to knock Larson out of the playoffs by two points. Also eliminated were Daytona 500 winner Austin Cindric, Daniel Suarez and Larson’s teammate, Alex Bowman. Since the last time Randy caught up with Beth Ann back in early May a lot has happened--Nelly Korda is a major champion and #1-ranked player in the world, Yuka Saso took home the US Women's Open at Olympic (thanks, in part, to Lexi's Sunday collapse), and so much more. Randy asks her about the Evian and its standing on the women's major championship circuit, the Solheim Cup, and the new Commissioner. Lots of ground covered in this one and thanks as always to Beth Ann for his knowledge and insight. Enjoy!

Another exciting weekend of golf and we're here to talk about it! First, we kick off the episode with a recap of the 76th US Women's Open at The Olympic Club which was won by 19-year-old Yuka Saso. Saso held off Nasa Hataoka on the third playoff hole to capture her first major victory. We discuss her impressive round as well as a complete meltdown from Lexi Thompson who saw a 5 stroke lead evaporate and the title slip through her fingers. We also talk about a couple of surging amateurs who found themselves in the top 20, including 17-year-old Megha Ganne, whose name we'll be hearing plenty more of in the coming years. At the same time, a ton of excitement was going down at Jack's Place as Patrick Cantlay took home his second victory at The Memorial, also in a playoff beating out Collin Morikawa. Although the two put on a great display down the stretch, the victory was certainly overshadowed by some controversy surrounding Jon Rahm as he was forced to withdraw from the event while holding a 6-stroke lead after the third round due to a positive COVID-19 test. Check back next week as we do a full preview of the 121st US Open at Torrey Pines. This is a packed Monday episode that begins with praise for Yuka Saso's playoff victory to become the youngest U.S. Women's Open champion. Her early double bogey run, her late comeback, her playoff tightrope walk, and her emotional interview are all discussed. Then Brendan and Andy get to Lexi Thompson, discussing the appropriate use of the word “choke,” which was not heard on the broadcast with Johnny Miller off enjoying retirement. Brendan recalls the inevitability of the collapse that felt so brutal, while Andy has a theory on why it started to unravel on the back nine. They discuss NBC's coverage of both Lexi's collapse and the move to Golf Channel for the end of the playoff. The Memorial discussion largely focuses on Jon Rahm's positive COVID test and WD, as well as another round of Brooks-Bryson feuding that may have led to the Tour getting involved. Is it bullying or crossing some sort of line? They wrap with a shoutout to a couple Canucks, the KFT GOAT, and sectional qualifying.
