I'mGanguzzayour host, Anne Ganguza, and I have something amazing for you 00:53 , bosses, today.  00:55 Today's guest is a one-woman entertainmentRolondaempire. She's done it all award-winning journalistRolonda daytime talk show host, actor, stand-up comic, best-selling author and one of the most recognizable voices in voiceover. You may have heard her as Professor Wiseman on Curious GeorgeRolonda in the Proud FamilyRolonda kung Fu Panda and now Invincible Fight Girl. She's also the annoucer and promo voice of the Sherry Show, where Sherry Shepard calls her a daytime talk show legend, which I happen to agree. Rolanda Watts is currently lighting up the screen on Bounce TV's hit comedy Mind your Business which I always get to see all the shorts on the Facebook feed, by the way where she plays Lucille, the sharp, sassy family matriarch that keeps it real with tough love and somehow I feel like that just echoes your character to a T. And she I feel like that just echoes your character to a T, and she's also appearing in the upcoming season of Netflix's Survival ofRolondathe Thickest, and was recently inducted into the prestigious Silver Circle by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences at the 2024 Emmys, recognizing her lifetime of groundbreaking work in television.  02:04 Bosses, please welcome the incomparable Rolanda Watts, thank you. Thank you, rolanda. I have to tell you, you know I'm a big fan. I mean, I've said this to you before, but, bosses, I am the biggest fan of Rolanda. I actually know Rolanda from watching her on daytime talk TV, and that was a while ago. I want to say that daytime talk shows had just kind of come into like being, and you're one of the first that I watched and I just I just you, your personality, just everything about you was just amazing. It's just magnetic, and so I am so excited to be able to interview you, a talk show host. So I was like, oh man, how am I going to prepare to talk to you? But you are just so gracious and wonderful, and so that kind of gave me a little bit of of hope that I wouldn't completely flub it up today, rolanda.  03:05 - Rolonda (Guest) I don't think you would do that, Anne.  03:08 - Anne (Host) My goodness. So for the bosses, who you know don't really know your story and how you started off, I mean, my gosh, you're a media empire, so I don't even like we could have like five days worth of interviews with you, but it all started as broadcast journalism correct interviews with you, but it all started as broadcast journalism correct?  03:28 - Rolonda (Guest) Yes, Tell us about that. Well, I grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and I, you know, I went to well, it's a long story about how I became an actor, but it all started with being 12 years old and going to Broadway with my family and seeing Guys and Doll and I was just like, oh my God, I love the stage and that's what I Anne do. So I went to Spelman and majored in theater arts and then there weren't a lot of roles when I got out of college. There just wasn't a track for folks who looked like me in the acting world, and so I fell in love with journalism, went to Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism and I was a news reporter and investigative anchor woman and producer for many years for New York WABC, WNBC Inside.  04:16 - Anne (Host) Edition, and that's impressive. And all of a sudden. Well, yeah, I was an investigative journalist. I mean you just said it like it came so easy. But I Anne imagine at the time. I mean you must have had to really work to get yourself in that space.  04:33 - Rolonda (Guest) Well, it was a crazy time because it was the 1980s. There weren't a lot of women in investigative news reporting, not in New York City, and so it was a groundbreaking time for women and and there was so much in the news, especially in New York, it was the big gang wars, the mob wars. You know, gotti hadn't even come into into play yet, so it was murder and mayhem. I was covering, wow and yeah, an inside edition. I was more murder and mayhem.  05:04 - Anne (Host) I remember that.  05:06 - Rolonda (Guest) Yeah. And then a man by the name of Roger King, who in heaven remains the number one selling as human being in television, asked me if I would like to do my very own syndicated talk show. So for four years I did the Rolanda show and then, when that was over let's loop back to the 12 year old who wore the subway token around her neck as a good luck charm. I said I'm not going to be on a porch when I'm 80 years old, going I could have, would have, should have. I am going to take my chances and go for my lifelong dream and make that 12 year old inside of me happy.  05:41 And I took off and went to Hollywood and that's where I became an actor and a writer and a producer and had my own production company and stumbled into voice acting and all of these things were part of what so many people call me the reinventionist. But I have had to reinvent my life for so many reasons and so many times. But I believe that isRolondamany different things that I've done and it's all around one thing and that's what we do as voice actors Good storytelling.  06:13 - Anne (Host) Yeah, absolutely Absolutely. And it's so interesting because before I had really come into like knowing you again, after you know, watching your talk show, and then knowing you as in voiceover yeah, the Anne and promo voice of the Sherry show, how interesting. Like you started to talk show, you're like a legend and talk show in my, in my brain. I'm like Rolanda, that's so awesome, like you. And now you kind of came full circle back to it a little bit Right, being the Anne and the promo voice.  06:46 And I was watching a clip of you the other day and Sherry was saying something. She was going on. She was gushing about you, which I get that. She was gushing about you and it was so interesting. She was giving you this credit about talking about your talk show and how wonderful you were and you turned it right. The conversation went right back to her about how wonderful she was and I was just blown away by how gracious that was and I just thought, well, no wonder. Well, no wonder you made such a great talk show host, such a great communicator, such a great actor and stand-up comedian and everything, because you just have this wonderful way of connecting with people.  07:29 - Rolonda (Guest) Well, you're awfully sweet, Anne. I'm going to receive all of that, but I thank you for that. You know it's, it's it. I, you know I was. I get blown away too, because Sherry does not hold back about what. What do the folks say? Giving me my flowers? And it's nice to receive them when you can smell them. You know, you know, know, it's really interesting because we did pave the way for sherry and and kelly and and drew and tamron all of them and I also know the hard work that those ladies are doing.  08:04 This job called talk is not easy. The politics that go on, the struggles day to day, the whole idea that the show is bigger than you as a human. It's very trying and you're out there by yourself. So I of course give her her flowers back because you can hand over the baton, but if the person can't run with it it really doesn't count. So to be able to see that continuum is a beautiful, beautiful thing.  08:29 And you know what's really funny is that Sherry's executive producer, who you see on the show all the time, John Murray. John was a college student when he first came to see my show and that's when he got the TV bug. He was bitten by the TV bug and so I would invite him back. In fact, one time I put him on the show so he could come and see how the producers worked and the behind the scenes working Skip to him becoming the executive producer of the Sherry show, and he said there's no other voice that we would have introduced, Sherry, and pass on the legacy than you. So it's really good. I mean, you got to be nice to kids, because they're coming up and they'll be your boss.  09:10 - Anne (Host) Right. Isn't that the truth?  09:12 - Rolonda (Guest) It is, it's like full circle.  09:13 - Anne (Host) You've, really you've done so much and you are.  09:15 I feel as though you've got. I feel like, look, I know how busy I am and I do a lot of stuff, but I feel like you, you're, you're doing it all. I mean you're, you're in that sitcom and I see, I'm thankful. I see the clips that you're posting on Facebook and it's so funny how the Rolanda that I know right, that I had a conversation with at VO Atlanta, I mean I feel like it is just so true to your character. Tell us a little bit about that role. I feel like you're just having the best time doing it.  09:44 - Rolonda (Guest) Oh my God, Lucille Williams, or Lucille is just one of the most wonderful characters. I mean, she's just great. And this coming weekend she's going to break off into her cougarlicious life, I know, oh wow.  10:05 She and her besties. They call themselves the silver sneakers. The nieces have convinced them that they need to give up the old guys, who just need a nurse and a purse, and go and get some of the young guys to go get some cool you know, be cougars and so we see how that works. But it's very, you know, it's fun to play her. She's sassy, she's the matriarch of the family, but at the same time we're writing storylines that give her a full bodied woman-ness. At this certain age, absolutely, absolutely.  10:42 - Anne (Host) I love that.  10:43 - Rolonda (Guest) But Mind your Business is a wonderful sitcom. It's one of those wonderful family sitcoms. It's produced by Bentley Evans, who did Jamie Foxx and Martin, so you're going to get that kind of zany funniness, but it's. But my character is lost her business almost during covid and calls on her family to come in and help save the business. And so she moves in with the family to save some money and all hell breaks loose. They need more of a referee than they do business partners. Now.  11:14 - Anne (Host) I love it. Now, if I'm correct, you're on season two, is that correct?  11:20 - Rolonda (Guest) We're on season two. That's right.  11:22 - Anne (Host) That's right Will there be more seasons. We certainly hope so. I hope so too.  11:25 - Rolonda (Guest) Listen, we're depending on you to watch and binge and love it. We're on Bounce TV or the Brown Sugar app and you Love it.  11:32 - Anne (Host) We're on Bounce TV or the Brown Sugar app and you can go look up where you can watch it. Yeah, I love that. Well, ok, so All right, we have to. Now we have to come to the voiceover aspect of things. So you actually have been doing voiceover since you came to LA, right?  11:46 - Rolonda (Guest) And well, you know what's so crazy, Anne, is that I was doing voiceover work, promos and Anne and voiceovers, and I didn't even know I was a voice actor, because I was doing all of that stuff for my show. I mean, had I known I was a voice actor at that time, I would have had a very different contract, trust me. But but it let meRolonda you know. But, just being a news reporter for so many years in New York City and on Inside Edition across the nation, people just knew my voice. And when, when I moved to LA and gave up the whole news and talk business to come out here and be an actor and a producer, nine months into the game the writers went on strike and instead of hosting an internationally syndicated talk show, I was on the picket line serving pizza to the striking writers.  12:39 And I was like what am I going to do? And I had to eat, I had to pay my rent, I mean what, what? And it was like I'm not going back to news, so what am I going to do? And I remembered that I used to call 411 back when you used to get information and the operator even knew my voice. They would go is this Rolanda. And so I said well this, I know I've got a voice, I'll go do voice acting. And I could not catch a cold because I didn't understand what the business was about. I had a voice and I had a microphone, but I had no idea what voice acting was about. I had a voice and I had a microphone, but I had no idea what voice acting was about.  13:14 So I went over to Calumson and Calumson over there in Burbank and I took a class and that thing saved my life because those that was the one of the that was the well, it was one of the longest strikes in Hollywood nine months and by that time I had created a whole new career and the voice actors weren't on strike. So I said this is a great backup for my physical acting and there are times and when my voice works more than my physical acting and now that I'm becoming a woman of a certain age those roles aren't coming in as quickly. But, honey, I can play a hot 30 year old.  13:53 - Anne (Host) Well, my voice. I love that you're using the woman of a certain age because, as a woman of a certain age, as well, what are you?  14:02 - Rolonda (Guest) going to do.  14:04 - Anne (Host) Exactly. I mean, I say use it Right, I mean absolutely. And so let's talk just for a brief moment about what. So acting and voice acting, same, different, what? What would you say are the key differences? Because you said, oh, I had to go to Kalmanson and Kalmanson, right.  14:22 - Rolonda (Guest) So there are some things, yeah, oh, absolutely.  14:25 - Anne (Host) Bosses need to know that are different and I absolutely always tell people yes, you should, you should, you know, take acting classes. But also there are some, some differences.  14:35 - Rolonda (Guest) Yeah, I find that there there's. It's just a different set of muscles, I think that's what you would say. One is just strictly your imagination and I think, well, for me, one helps the other. Well, for instance, the character I play we talked about Lucille, lucille talks like this she's got a little quiver in her voice and she just real high pitch, like that. So some of those tricks that we learn in terms of texture and pitch and pacing and all of that that we do as we imagine our characters, I do the same thing when I see the character on the page and I say how does that voice, what? What is it about her voice that's going to make her stand out. And they know that's Lucille, that's part of her, because she doesn't have cause. That character doesn't have this voice, not my voice. So I think that that that helps me find my characters In fact.  15:29 In fact I did a play and I had I did three plays at one time. Craziest thing in the world never been done Did three plays at one time, playing 10 different characters, from a nine-year-old girl to a 76-year-old grandmother, and all of those are different voices. You know, one was a journalist, one was a, you know, grandmother one, a, a little girl who grew up in mississippi. I mean, those are just such different voices and I also have bring my physical things, like when I'm thinking of a character in my voice, acting. I think what would they wear?  16:04 Shakespeare said, the clothes make the man and the woman too. Are they wearing a cape that they sold over there, you know? Are they carrying a sword? Does she have really tight bobs in her hair? I mean, does she have a mustache? So there are all kinds of things that I think. If I'm in my prop room or my wardrobe room and it's just my imagination, what can I do to help bring those things to light? Just the way, when they put the wig on and the clothes and the heels on for stage or screen, you could become that character. You do the same in your imagination, yeah.  16:37 - Anne (Host) I love that, I love that parallel.  16:40 That makes so much sense, actually, and it's interesting. So, for voice actors, who have not necessarily acted, what sort of tips would you have to for them to be better actors? Let's say, because it's funny, I do a lot of the stuff that people don't think you need to act for in terms of voiceover, like corporate narration or e-learning, and they think that you don't need to act. But in reality you're always a character, and so when I'll say to my students, envision that scene, it's just to them they're like what, why? Why do I need to do that? Why don't I just read the words? You know why?  17:20 - Speaker 3 (Announcement) I hear it. Yeah, exactly, you know why?  17:22 - Rolonda (Guest) Because we're not looking for readers, we're looking for actors, and I think that's one of the biggest mistakes that folks make who don't become a VO boss is because they don't understand what this industry is about. It's really not even about your voice. It's not about I mean, everybody has a beautiful, unique voice, because there are no two voices alike but it's the acting that's going to make you so different. It's those subliminal things under those lines. Sometimes you have a whole commercial that tells a whole life story in four lines and they, they fought over those lines. Attorneys, 50 people made all those lines. So they mean something. What is the story we're telling here? Right, and who am I in this story and who am I talking to? You know all of those questions. Where am I? Why am I even this story and who am I talking to? You know all of those questions. Where am I? Why am I even talking about this toilet paper? You know, and I'm a bear.  18:21 Why am I. Even I'm a mama bear. I mean why? You know why am I, and I'm not going to act like a bear, but I'm going to act like a mom who's concerned about her kids not wiping themselves. And that's just real stuff. So how do you tap into the authenticity? How do you make it human? Because what our job is is to connect with another human being. That's something that folks down there on Madison Avenue, the big advertisers, can't do in their suits, so they depend on us as actors, to be human, to be just plain old ourselves and human. No bravado, as we're hearing so much in our copy and in our instruction and directions as actors. Authenticity, throw it away, just give it to me. No salesy, no Anne, and I got to tell you that's the hardest thing in the world to do. Even for us seasoned actors, it's sometimes hard to shake off the the, the formality and just get real with it. You know and feel comfortable and confident with that.  19:21 - Anne (Host) Can I ask you to repeat that, can you that you said, you said what you said. It was hard, it's hard, it is hard, right. It is so hard Like I love it because you create that scene Right. It is so hard, like I love it because you create that scene Right In which those words make sense, right.  19:36 And tell a story and sometimes those words are really we don't know. We don't know that, Like I, have some people that are almost indignant that they don't have a storyboard or they don't. They don't understand the words. So therefore, if they don't, they're just kind of well, let's just say them then.  19:58 - Rolonda (Guest) Right In a melody that I think they want to hear. Rolonda, that's great, then they'll have a melody that they just heard, but they won't have the commercial.  20:03 - Anne (Host) I love it, so yes, so you said it's hard, rolanda says it's hard, it is.  20:09 - Rolonda (Guest) I go on record as saying the hardest thing I've ever had to do whether it was talk, tv or vocal or physical acting is being myself. Now in life, I have no problem beingRolondaauthentically Rolanda. What you see is Rolonda you get. But it's something that happens when we pick up that script and that microphone is in front of us and, all of a sudden, things start changing and happening. We're just not ourselves. I don't sound like myself. I don't like toRolondahear my voice. It takes, it's really acting. When you hear people who sound like how did they get that job? They don't even sound like a voice actor. It's because they are turning themselves Rolonda a virtual pretzel justRolondato sound like that, to sound so normal.  20:58 I remember when I first started doing my talk show um, the, the demand of being a, an actor I mean not an actor, but a talk show host with a talk show called rolanda was that you had to be Rolanda. You couldn't be the news reporter anymore. That was crucial to the success, and so it was very hard to even do it then, and I can remember my bosses and my partners calling going get that news reporter out of there, bring back Rolanda. And I said but I've got this crazy laugh and a raspy voice and I, you know, I'm a Southern accent and that's everything that makes my brand. I mean, it's crazy, but that's Rolanda. When you say Rolanda, that's what you hear. So whatever that is about you, whatever that quirky, crazy thing that you think is your fault, that's going to be your greatest asset. You know, when I was a little kid, they called me froggy and I always played all the guys in all my all girls school plays and I thought that was a real fault of mine. And now I can play women, men, little boys, pirates, anything in this industry of voice acting, and there's no limitation. The only limitation is your imagination. It's not about the equipment, it's not even about your voice. It's about your brilliant imagination and what you bring to that character, not even the microphone, what you bring to that character that nobody else thought about. That made that animator go. Oh, I can't wait to draw this character, um, and to make the casting director's job easy. They want you to win, they want you to get this job, so give it to them, show them your special sauce.  22:43 But I think it takes real practice, practice, practice. Like carnegie hall, they say. You just don't walk up into carnegie hall and start playing the violin. No, you got to learn how the instrument works. You got to learn how to maintain it, take care of it, how to make love to that instrument so it delivers that God given art and craft that you've put into it. You've got to do the work. And a lot of people think, well, I can just go pick this up and read. And the sad thing is, and they don't take classes and they have no idea what they're doing wrong. The worst thing that can happen is you go years and years and years building on the wrong stuff because you never took the time to learn the right stuff. You don't know what you don't know. Yeah, that's so.  23:29 - Anne (Host) I'm.  23:29 - Rolonda (Guest) I'm real big on training and classes so that you get the education and the acting experience and you understand how to break down scripts, you understand the vocabulary of this industry and how to network and and and use your resources that are right there at your fingertips.  23:46 - Anne (Host) Well, I think I think you're probably very much a VO Boss on using those resources and networking throughout your whole career. That's absolutely something that I feel that you've you've done so successfully. What would you say is probably the most important thing tip that you could give to to ensure success in this industry? Because it's a evolving industry and, yes, being the the queen of reinvention, right, you've had to reinvent yourself, and reinvent yourself not only in, you know, voiceover, but in, like all the media and how it's evolved over the years. So what would be your, your best tip to ensure success? Don't quit there. You go.  24:26 - Rolonda (Guest) I like that. The only people who don't succeed in voice acting are people who quit. I like that. You know, even the greatest ones. And you know, when we're at the VO Atlanta conference and we're with the greats I mean we're with Bob, who's Porky the pig, and we're with Joe, who's every network's Anne and when you hear these, these, these major vo stars and pros say, man, I do 50 to 100 auditions and may not nab the job a lot of us went whoa.  24:59 - Anne (Host) thank god, it's just not us, because yeah, I mean I can show you a stack in my head. I'm like oh, thank god, because, yeah, I, I just did a ton, I know, yeah, and look, listen I hear some auditions from this month okay yeah, am, I, am, I am I booking every one of them?  25:16 - Rolonda (Guest) no, but that's but. But you have to change your mindset. Every time I show up that microphone and I'm doing an audition, I'm not going up there. Well, I'm not going to get the job anyway. If you've got a bad attitude like that, it's time for you to jump into a classroom and just realign yourself, because this is a long game. And let me tell you what's going to happen when you get great you nab that job, you go and do that commercial. One hour it's gone and you're right back to auditioning again. So don't put all of your emphasis on just the job, but the but, the practice, the maintenance of it. Uh, going to conferences like the VO Atlanta conference, vo Dallas conference, sosa look up these places. That's a good place to hobnob. This is a very solo business. You're a solopreneur, you're by yourself, you, your microphone, your computer and your imagination. That's it. So get out and join memberships. Like Anne. You can come and take my class, the voice acting masterclass with Rolanda. In fact, I'm going to offer your listeners a very special deal if they're interested.  26:29 But that's another way that we build community and you learn what's the cutting edge. Right now we're dealing with AI. What does that mean? Staying on the cutting edge of things that are going to affect your career and really take it as a business. This is not just a hobby. Understand how your taxes work, understand the legalities and understand the questions to ask when you're signing a contract. Now just don't run out there all willy-nilly and not ask the right questions or your voice will be used forever and you not get paid. You know the video game people just had a strike and got some. Where are we moving forward in the business?  27:10 Be able to talk intelligently about the business. So when you're out there meeting people, they know, oh okay, this is somebody really serious. This isn't just somebody who just got a microphone on amazon and call themselves a voice actor, because there's a lot of that. But I say that um, really, just don't quit and understand that every time you show up in front of that microphone, it's another opportunity to show you a special sauce. And if the casting director doesn't get you into this particular job and that's not their decision, it's the producer's or whoever the client is. If you don't make it then, then at least they've heard you. I get a lot of times where they're. Rolonda same client will keep calling me back and I know I've impressed them in those other auditions I've done, so I know they're looking for something for me, so I just keep showing up, doing the best that I possibly can and finding ways to make it different. Because they've heard the same audition 50 million times, sometimes 500 times.  28:12 So what can you do to make it a little different and still stay within the parameters? So there's Ganguzza kinds of tricks and strategies and all kinds of things that you can do to stand Ganguzza and also how you market yourself like anything else. This is a brand Just because Rolonda have a microphone. Anything else this is a brand. Just because you have a microphone doesn't mean you have a brand. So reallyRolonda you know, that's one of the things I tell my students all the time. Once you get the breaking down the script and understand how the microphone and the vocab let's, let's talk about marketing, social marketing. How do we brand ourselves? How can you be one name like Rolanda and people immediately know what that means, and so that's really knowing your stuff and knowing your own voice too, that's so interesting because for a while, when I first started, I had different names.  29:00 - Anne (Host) I mean I, of course I started VO Peeps, I have VO Boss, and then I have Anne Ganguza brand and I'm like I really just need to wrap it all up into the Anne Ganguza brand. So finally, people say I need an Anne Ganguza, like I need a Rolanda. I need an Anne Ganguza, and so I love that that you have that brand and you build on that brand. But, rolanda, let me ask you a question, because I saw the stack of auditions. Do you I mean still, do you get, still I say still do you get an imposter syndrome?  29:31 - Rolonda (Guest) I think I'm pretty much. I'm pretty much at this time in my life. I know who I am. You know I'm not trying to. I've done enough and achieved enough and have enough confidence in myself. I think you know what I think this is. The other thing about this industry is confidence, because you can hear I can hear through a microphone. If you're not confident and you don't even believe yourself, if you see it, I'm going to see it. If you believe it, I'm going to believe it. And that's half the battle, I mean, and that's also part of the practice of this art and this craft, is learning how to still your nerves. Breathing is so much a part, warming up is so much a part of it and it's a full body job. This is an inside job because your beautiful vocal cords are right here in this body encases it. So you got to work out, you got to stretch. You know I love this. Old morgan freeman used to say that the secret to his great voice was a good, deep yawn.  30:29 Absolutely, you know because it just loosens up everything and these 41 muscles up here need to be worked out. A lot of people just jump right up, start reading, don't even warm up their mouths.  30:40 - Anne (Host) As evidenced by your. I think it was yesterday when I saw you on Facebook and you were like all right, I'm going back to the gym.  30:48 - Rolonda (Guest) I know. I messed up.  30:50 - Anne (Host) That's it. I'm going back.  30:54 - Rolonda (Guest) I'm a hot mess but.  30:56 - Anne (Host) I think that warming up I mean it helps, it absolutely does. Just a physical walk, you know, if you go to the gym, a physical warmup does absolutely help. Now, we did talk, we touched upon the confidence issue. We did talk, we touched upon the confidence issue, and one thing that I'm really excited about is that in let's see, is it in September, on the 17th, we are going to have you doing a guest directorship for the VO bosses on improv to improve your confidence and connection. So we will be talking about how bosses can remain confident or stay confident or get confident in the booth, and I love that.  31:35 You said that we can hear. We can hear that confidence and it's really interesting because even if you're telling a story and it may not be the story that ends up being on the video or the commercial right or the commercial right If we're auditioning and we're telling a story and we're convinced of it and we are confident in it, then the people listening, the casting directors, the people that will cast us, will believe it as well, and I think that's one of the telltale signs that they say, ah, shortlist, or that's what's gonna get you the gig.  32:05 - Rolonda (Guest) I think confidence and that's really believing in yourself and being able to take chances and risks. Because you know, think about it. The casting director is hearing 500 people say the same three lines. What are you going to bring to that story that's going to make a difference? I'll give you an example.  32:23 I did an at t commercial and it was about it. It was a very little short commercial and it was about a young girl who sees her mother, who has gone out for girls night at a salsa club, and she says mom, is this you on social media? And the mother goes oh, yes, honey, we were out with Raul last night and we were just dancing and then I something happened. And I said and I just to world. That was not even a line in the script, but I just had this imagination, cuz I used to go out salsa with my girlfriends in California and, honey, when Eduardo would ask us to dance, we would to world. And that just brought that into that like an aunt Lucille, and that's what got me the gig. And it was, and it was just that little button that we say, you know, because they've heard 500 times that people say the same thing yes, I went salsaing with my girlfriend, but nobody twirled but me, nobody's.  33:26 - Anne (Host) nobody else is twirling except for Rolanda. Nobody else is.  33:29 - Rolonda (Guest) honey, that's how much fun I had, which lets you know what that video must have looked like, that the girl saw.  33:36 Absolutely, absolutely, and listen and the fact that these old ladies were even on social media, lets, you know, those boys were young. They taught him how to tick and tock and twirl, you know. So I'm having a whole imaginative thing about going out with my girlfriends and then my girlfriend, my daughter, catching me. Oh please, child, we had a good time. You know, we don't care about what people think at this age. So bringing all of those things, even my own wisdom at this age, like I don't care, honey, I'm twirling with Eduardo because the guys my age don't twirl, so I'm bringing all of that fun into it, you know.  34:11 Another example was when I did judge Joe Brown. You know I was the Anne for that show and when I was doing the audition we had to, you know, was a promo, so I would have to read the line and then listen to the sound bite and then read the line in between. And listen to the sound bite, read, read the line. And I was so big. Judge Joe was such a crazy, freaking judge show. I would say, coming up today on Judge Joe, I'm going to slit your tire and I'm going to beat Shaniqua Mary can't stand, john and then I'm going to cut your other tire and then I would be.  34:46 And then one time I just went, whoa, the next Judge, joe. Honey, they fell on the floor. I was so busy listening that I was reacting like an at home person and I was like, ooh, on the next Joe. I was so irreverent that they created a little animation called lady justice and it was a little bug and I made up this whole story that lady justice was in love with joe just like the daytime audience was gone. Joe, tell them, joe, that's judge, joe, you know because I know the daytime audience. Yeah, so that's the other question we asked who are you talking to?  35:30 - Speaker 3 (Announcement) absolutely, this wasn't the inside edition audience. This. Don't be afraid to take that risk.  35:53 - Rolonda (Guest) You can do a straight one on the next Judge. Joe and Shanique was going to go, but honey, one time let it rip and show them that you can have fun. Fun is the main key. If it's not fun, don't do it.  36:05 - Anne (Host) Yeah, I agree, I think if you can make, if you can make someone laugh, if you can, if you can, if you can bring a smile to that casting director, that person listening to you, oh my goodness. And speaking of because normally I try to make this, you know, a 30 minute podcast, but I do want to touch upon. I do want to touch upon the fact that you are a stand up comedian as well, and we had quite a conversation at VO Atlanta on that, and so I feel like that's just all embedded in your personality and I think you were always a funny person, like from maybe a young girl. But talk to us about being at stand up comedy is tough.  36:41 - Rolonda (Guest) Oh, it's really tough.  36:42 - Anne (Host) But you know something that's a rough audience.  36:45 - Rolonda (Guest) Know your audience. Who are you talking to? That's true. And you know something Lunell taught me that she said know your audience, be able to switch on a dime, whatever. But I'm going to tell you just, VO bosses, that comedy helps immensely. It helps your timing, you know. So much of comedy comes in threes. So when you're doing animation or even some fun commercials, what's that third line where the funny ABC?  37:10 - Anne (Host) read right Where's that?  37:11 - Rolonda (Guest) Where's that? Third line where the funny? Or they want an ABC. Read Right, where's that? Where's that? Where's the funny? And that also gives you the confidence and the imagination and and I tell you funny, joan Rivers told Sherri Shepherd funny girls always work, funny women, funny girls always work, funny women, funny women always work. So adding a little humor to something I think makes you stand out. But I love the craft of comedy. I'm uh got uh some comedy shows here in New York at the comedy village comedy in Harlem, and then I'm going to go out to flappers in LA this winter December for the holidays and I'm opening for Lunell and that's really exciting so yeah, I'm getting my comedy on Awesome.  37:58 - Anne (Host) Look out for me on Netflix one day. I do not doubt it. Well, rolanda, it has been such a pleasure. I wish I could talk to you for another. Well, another five episodes.  38:07 - Rolonda (Guest) Oh, wait a minute. Wait a minute Speaking of Netflix. I got to do this and we're talking about Michelle Boutot's show survival of the thickest.  38:15 - Anne (Host) I'm on that one as well on Netflix. Awesome. Oh, and before and before we actually go, talk to us a little bit about September 17th improv to improve your confidence. A little bit about what we're going to, we're going to be diving into in that class.  38:30 - Rolonda (Guest) Oh, I can't wait to that class because improv is such a great way to gain your confidence, to loosen up and to have a whole bunch of fun. The beautiful thing about improv is there are certain rules that we go by, but it's just fun and it's going to help you tap into your authenticity. One good example we improv every day in life. You talk to your lover very different than you do to your boss, and don't let your best girlfriend call you in the middle of the day, and then, when your mother calls, listen to all the different voices that we have, and that's a lot of improv too. Improv also helps you listen and much of acting is about listening and I think you will surprise yourself, and part of the improv to improve your confidence is finding your own voice and discovering things through this exercise about your own experiences and about your being able to to react on a dime and have fun and laugh about it. Then when you you get those scripts, you can improv in your head.  39:32 I always do a little role play before I start, something Like if I have to play an old grandma, then I talk like an old grandma. Okay, I spin and rush them out. Our teeth don't fit too well. You got a little pain in the rats every once in a while. So you keep building these wonderful things that help you. Listen, you may not get that job, but you know you're going to doggone. Put in the effort because you've done the work. You know you. You will be so surprised, all the places that your voice will take you. And improv too. I mean there are times you're going to meet strangers, a new boss, and going to have to improv too. I mean there are times you're going to meet strangers, a new boss and going to have to improv too.  40:13 So improv is going to be a fun exercise for us. We're going to then take scripts, break down those scripts and do some acting. I'm going to teach you about Uta Hagen's nine questions. We're going to talk a little bit, a bit about Sandy Meisner's techniques, and these are just little things that you can put in your hip pocket that will help you. When you go out into the world and you're in that booth by yourself and you look to the right and the left and there's nobody there but padded walls, what are you going to do? You're not going to freak out, because we're going to learn about warmups and what we do with all this body when we're nervous and behind a microphone, because I can hear nervousness, I can hear it. So let's uh, let's work on that rolanda, did you hear my nerves?  40:57 - Anne (Host) did you hear my nerves when I was interviewing you are so not nervous listen, you need to make it easy.  41:05 - Rolonda (Guest) You've got the ganguza method, that's it there you my own method. I want to be gangouza'd. I love it.  41:12 - Speaker 3 (Announcement) I love it oh my gosh.  41:14 - Anne (Host) Thank you so so much. It has been such a pleasure talking to you today.  41:19 - Rolonda (Guest) You know how much fun we have. We get together and start talking and the sun can come up.  41:23 - Anne (Host) So true, so true.  41:23 - Rolonda (Guest) Thank you, thank you so much.  41:25 - Anne (Host) I so true, thank you. Bio: Linda Yu has been called a trailblazer, mentor and award- journalist. She recently stepped back from daily broadcasting after more than forty years in television news. Yu began her career in 1974 as a writer for the Los Angeles ABC station KABC-TV and then went on to become a writer/producer at KTLA-TV. In 1975 she stepped in front of the camera as a reporter for the ABC affiliate station in Portland, Oregon KATU-TV. Within months, she received an offer from ABC owned station KGO-TV in San Francisco as reporter and anchor, where Yu worked from to 1979. In late 1979, she was spotted by the NBC owned station in Chicago, WMAQ-TV, and moved to the Windy City as weekend anchor and reporter. Part of Yu's motivation for accepting the position was that she would be the first Asian American to appear on a Chicago network station. Five years later, ABC won her back and she moved to Chicago's ABC7, WLS-TV, to anchor the station's newly created 4 p.m. news hour. Later, an 11 a.m. news hour was added to her anchor duties. Both news programs maintained their number one rating throughout her 33 year career at ABC7. Among the honors and recognition for Yu are six local Emmy awards, as well as induction into the prestigious “Silver Circle” of legendary Chicago broadcasters. She has been named one of Today's Chicago Women magazine's “100 Women to Watch” and has been awarded a National Gold Medal by the National Conference of Community and Justice. In her community service, Yu spent more than 30 years as the Advisory Board Chairperson for the Chinese American Service League. She is also a co-founder of the Chicago chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association. She has been an active supporter and volunteer for Common Threads, the Juvenile Protective Association and the March of Dimes. Yu is the author of “Living and Working in America”, a book published in Chinese and sold in China. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/banhmichronicles/support

What was the highlight of my day? What did I do really well? What could I do more of? How could I be even better? What decisions did I make? How could that impact me mentally? Charlène Gisèle asks herself these questions every day and believes that if you don't start your day with a bit of self-care, then you probably won't do it. After experiencing burnout, Charlène decided to become a burnout prevention expert and help others avoid burnout. As a child, Charlène Gisèle knew that she wanted to be a lawyer. She watched her father work as a high-achieving lawyer and Charlène wanted the same career for herself. But after her father had a heart attack and stroke, Charlène reconsidered her priorities. Although Charlène experienced anxiety, insomnia, and a deteriorated marriage, it wasn't until she saw her father suffer, that Charlène truly understand burnout. Charlène explains that suffering with mental health issues is unlike any other illness because no one can see your pain. “You do not walk around with a bandage or cast on your head,” in the way you would have a cast on your leg or arm when you are injured. But Charlène is adamant that burnout must be treated as seriously as any other illness. It was with great difficulty that Charlène decided to leave her Big Law office. Charlène spent so much time studying at Cambridge University (United Kingdom) and learning the law, but it was time for Charlène to learn about work-life balance. Charlène Gisèle created a consulting company, Charlène Gisèle, where she and two associates, coach lawyers and C-suite executives to remain high-achieving professionals. Two or three minutes of breathwork or reflection after a big meeting will really help high-achieving lawyers and executives avoid burnout. In fact, creating these micro habits are better than taking a 3-week holiday. Creating consistent self-care micro habits allows you to learn habits that will serve you for the rest of your life in addition to helping you avoid burnout. Charlène is able to help high-achievers change their mindsets about self-care because she negotiates with them and explains that your well-being affects your performance. “When you must bridge the gap between how you react to things and how you feel, your micro habits will impact you,” says Charlène Gisèle. Charlène Gisèle serves clients in Asia, America, and Europe and has fluctuating schedules that allow her to get adequate rest while meeting clients in these varying time zones. Charlène credits law school with teaching her persistence and resistance, two traits that Charlène continues to use every day even though she has left Big Law. Join the Bounce Back from Burnout Masterclass with Charlène Gisele:https://joinnow.live/s/RjYWK5?_ga=2.99992984.782084531.1669768903-781012046.1669768903Can you keep practicing law without burnout and anxiety? What do you want to be remembered for?   Joe Schmit has been a broadcaster for over thirty years, and in addition to his family responsibilities, he often worked nights, weekends, and holidays to cover professional sports. At that time, he had some excellent teams, and Joe gave more to his job than his family.   He realized if he returned to the business, he could not put himself back on that treadmill. So he set some rules, made a box, and said, "If it doesn't fit in this box, I won't do it." Since his return, he has managed his schedule without burning out by prioritizing his family and saying no to opportunities that do not fit into his life.   Joe believes that impact is contagious, and in this episode, he talks about impact resolution, wherein each month you focus on a trait you want to get better at and commit to. We will also debunk the biggest myths that play around this topic.   About Joe:   Joe Schmit is an award-winning broadcaster, community leader, and author. He has won 18 Emmys from the National Television Academy and was awarded The Silver Circle designation by the Upper Midwest Chapter of the Emmys for extraordinary contributions to the broadcasting industry. A Haverhill native has been named Broadcasting and Cable's 2020 Broadcaster of the Year.Emily Barr, president and CEO of Graham Media Group of Chicago, formally receives the prestigious award Oct. 1 during the Television Bureau of Advertising virtual Alt Forward Conference. Barr was a recent guest on WHAV's morning program where she spoke of her Haverhill roots.“I did grow up in Haverhill and I went to Walnut Square Elementary and Whittier Elementary School. Then, I spent a couple of years at Haverhill High School before I went off to boarding school in New Hampshire. That led me to college in Minnesota—to a lovely small school called Carlton College, and I just happened to be majoring in film criticism and film production, and a professor recommended that I consider an internship in a TV station,” she said.It was in a television newsroom that Barr caught the “broadcasting bug.” WHAV asked Barr if she had opportunities to be in front of the camera.“You know, I never really did, with a very, very minor exception. When I was an intern in Minneapolis, way back when, they needed somebody to sort of act, if you will, in what we call a news promo, promoting the television station. So, I was picked because I was the young intern, and I got to rip a piece of paper out of the typewriter, and look up at the camera and yell, ‘Sky Cam's on the way!' which was the helicopter. And it ran for like a year, so everyone in school made fun of me. And every time I walked around campus, people would yell ‘Sky Cam's on the way!'” Barr said. What has become the Graham Media Group was founded in 1949 as a joint venture of the Washington Post and CBS. The Washington Post name was dropped after the newspaper was sold to Jeff Bezos in 2013. The company is named for Katharine Graham, who served as CEO of the Washington Post Company.Barr, who has led the broadcast division of Graham Holdings since 2012, previously received the Golden Mike Award from the Broadcasters Foundation of America in 2018. In 2016, she was inducted into the 2016 Silver Circle of the Chicago/Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.Besides television stations, Barr oversees the company's other offerings such as a social media software company.“It's called Social News Desk and what they do is provide software to about 2,500 newsrooms worldwide to help them put news out onto the internet, in a fairly easy fashion. They operate all over the world—primarily in the United States, but also in South America, Canada, Europe, the East, so forth. And then we have seven local television stations that operate in fairly good-sized cities around the country like Houston, Detroit, San Antonio, Orlando, Jacksonville and Roanoke, Va.,” she explained.During her Haverhill school years, Barr said, she didn't have a plan to head up a worldwide media company, but, in her words, “it worked out pretty well.”Support the show (https://whav.net/become-a-whav-member/)

The internet brings convenience to every transaction we make. Establishing a business online involves less hassle as well. But how do we ensure that our company will be successful and would create profit?  In today's podcast episode, our guest James Schramko tells us about his experience working in the corporate world before deciding to establish his own successful business. He shares how he accomplished working less and making more profit. He is the founder of SuperFastBusiness and Silver Circle, helping entrepreneurs quickly double or triple their revenues by working less. He is also the author of the book Work Less, Make More. Check out the episode's highlights, and also make sure to listen to the podcast for an in-depth discussion of our topic.   Early Work in the Motor Trade Business (2:31) James worked at Mercedes Benz. He later realized that he felt restricted in what he was doing. He found online marketing skills and techniques by accident. Determining the Right Business Model (13:05) Determine the target income for a certain period. Break down the essential questions about this goal. Gather answers from these questions to help assess which model is suitable for the business. Identify and explain the pros and cons of this suggested business model. 12-Week Cycle (15:23) Not focusing too much on long term goals. Set a theme for work. For example, search engine optimization: The team will focus on making emails more deliverable and speeding up the website. Distractions can drag agenda or plans down. Set one high-impact task per week. 80/20 Rule (22:49) Use filters or tools that help you identify which things are high-impact. Look out for the crucial things. Make this an automatic habit. Systems and Processes (26:50) Noah's Ark principle: Keeping two people assigned per task for efficiency. If someone leaves, the other person will still know how to work on the assigned task and can train the next person. Create an SOP to track urgent tasks. Keeping Talented and Trained People (29:48) Have good pre-interview criteria in advance and then do multiple interviews. Hire and train the employees well. Pay salaries early. Provide flexible work conditions. Encourage and praise employees. Ask the employees what they're passionate about and work on those projects. Immerse in their culture and lifestyle. How to Keep Motivated (40:35) “I think about [surfing]. That's enough for me. I wake up and check the forecast and get a good surf in each day.” Book Recommendation and Daily Rituals (42:41) Indistractable by Nir Eyal Sleeping early enough and waking without an alarm clock Drinking water first thing in the morning Surfing everyday James' routine includes an analogue activity to keep him grounded You can contact James at james@superfastbusiness.com. SFBTV SuperFastBusiness® Online Business Videos With James Schramko on Apple Podcasts

James Schramko here. Today, I'm going to cover the topic, what if I die? I actually had this email. Someone sent me an email and said, "What happens if you die? You know, you've built your brand around your name." Now that's not exactly correct in my situation where I have a business called SuperFastBusiness and SilverCircle. And I would argue that SuperFastBusiness with 500 members is probably worth something to somebody else, if that database was sold, if the membership and all the content was sold, it'd be worth something. But I still use my name for sure. But you can also build up an income stream of royalties such as from books, audibles, and you could do business revenue share deals, which I do. And some of these can actually pass on even if you're not around. The other thing to do is you can build assets to sell them. So, I've built up an SEO business and sold it. I built up a website development business and sold it. I'm building up two businesses now that work without me, to sell. That is the plan. And of course, you can still get insurance for loss of income, death or trauma. So, if something would happen to you, you can still provide for your family. And one of the most responsible things you can do is actually be successful. Pay down your debts, own your assets, invest your profits and get an income stream coming; whatever that's from, whether it's property or shares or some other venture. You can still provide well for your family even if you're not there, if you do some planning. And make sure you have a will. That's very important. So, today is a bit of a gruesome topic but it is worth considering. Make sure you have a plan in place in case something happens to you. See our products HERE.

In this episode of Brandstorm, we welcome Jill Geisler, a Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Hall of Famer and author of the book, Work Happy: What Great Bosses Know. Jill discusses her involvement in the Newseum’s Power Shift Project, what it takes to be a great leader in any industry, and why her mantra is, “Life’s too short to work with jerks.” Jill GeislerIn 1978, Jill became one of the first female news directors in the United States, working at WITI-TV in Milwaukee. She served in that capacity for more than 20 years and was inducted into the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences' prestigious Silver Circle. In 1998, she joined the faculty at the Poynter Institute, building and teaching leadership and management programs, and writing columns and producing podcasts that would eventually become content for her book, which was published in 2014. For the last three years, Jill has been a Bill Plante Chair in Leadership and Media Integrity at Loyola University Chicago. She consults with newsrooms and organizations around the globe and is an in-demand speaker on the issues of leadership, ethics and diversity in the digital age. Power Shift ProjectLast year, stories of sexual misconduct by powerful men in entertainment and media, like Harvey Weinstein, Matt Lauer and Charlie Rose, shook the industry to its core. Jan Neuharth, a trustee at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. (a popular museum dedicated to the history of journalism), and daughter of USA Today and Newseum founder Al Neuharth, asked for Jill's expertise and assistance in bringing together people who are on the forefront of this issue, including individuals from news organizations dealing with these bombshells and covering their own stories, victims of the reported abuse, academies who have studied these issues, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the National Women's Law Center (NWLC) and many more. In January, over 130 media leaders attended the first Power Shift Summit at the Newseum. At this summit, Jill moderated panels where representatives from news organizations spoke about attempts to put the pieces of their own companies back together after these accusations came to light. Discussions were also held on what can be done to change things industry-wide, and to shift the power away from the higher-ups who perpetuated such misconduct. Realizing more education on this topic was needed, Jill was asked to sign on with the Newseum to help design curriculum and activities for the Power Shift Project. With the full support of Loyola University, Jill sees her new venture as a wonderful service to humanity, and points out that misconduct in the industry is not limited to that of a sexual nature. Other issues include incivility, discrimination and how those who previously felt they were voiceless can now come forward. Work Happy: What Great Bosses KnowThe impetus for Jill's book came from feedback she received as a consultant and coach. She was frequently asked about books she might recommend on leadership. Instead of suggesting different books that dealt with singular topics like conflict resolution, time management or emotional intelligence, Jill felt there was a need for a book for people like her, who originally received no formal training in management or leadership. Her journalism background provided her with the unique talent to take in a lot of information, synthesize and translate it for others to easily understand. Jill says Work Happy: What Great Bosses Know is a reference tool that acts much like a workshop with self-diagnostic activities and quizzes to help any manager or team of managers improve their leadership skills and create a better work culture. What Makes a Great BossNo boss is perfect, but according to Jill, the great ones are leaders who work to overcome their flaws and surround themselves with people who will keep them honest and fill in their gaps. She also says people appreciate inspiration. True visionaries can see an end goal and let their team figure out the best route to get there. Great bosses will not likely hesitate to apologize. In fact, most employees have more respect for a boss who genuinely admits to a mistake and responds with the wisdom to figure out why it happened, and why it won't happen again. A great boss also remembers that their employees are people. What you do during both joyous and somber times as a leader will never be forgotten. Going out of your way to offer employees sincere condolences and support over a death in the family or being congratulatory about personal or family successes are good examples of this. Other Ways to Succeed at LeadershipJill believes the most important thing a leader can do is to help others succeed. Establishing early on that your goal is for your team to be able to do their best work builds social capital. Jill recommends tracking this in measurable ways, such as how you speak to your employees, how much you make yourself available to them and how much you know about them personally. However, this does not mean that treating everyone the same will work. Many leaders confuse office equality with forcing everyone to work the same way. A manager who tries to turn their staff into a version of him or her will likely fail. While standards can be universal, achieving those standards can differ for each person, and no two people should be required to achieve something the same way. Management Styles of a Bad BossJill says the worst management style she's seen in her career is the "Absentee Landlord." This is the person whose credo is, "I hire good people and I get out of their way." Jill explains that no good boss ever gets completely out of the way of their employees, because even top performers require feedback. Without it, employees have little idea where they stand, or how they are performing. Another avoidable management style is that of a controlling boss. While Jill admits that taking on an underperforming team requires control at first (such as being specific about your expectations and managing the team closely), maintaining that control will inevitably be damaging. Once the team begins to shine, a great boss steps back and becomes more of a participatory manager. Democracy is not always possible in the workplace. Bosses sometimes need to make tough calls. Jill recommends that if you cannot give your team a vote, then at least give them a voice. This helps people not only get things done, but to do so with an idea of their own creation. If a team doesn't need to rely on the boss for every single move, it will inevitably lead to great things. Jill also believes that poor leaders can often be too focused on product, believing that their staff is just a means to an end. These leaders should be more focused on helping their team reach current goals and set new ones. In other words, how can they make the process to complete a task more successful? Mistakes Employees Never Forget or ForgiveJill says dishonesty or a lack of transparency from a boss, especially when it comes to potential layoffs or a possible pay increase, is something employees never forget or forgive. Another breach of trust is a boss taking credit for someone else's work or idea, or on the flip side, refusing to take the appropriate blame when necessary. Lastly, a boss who acts differently around his or her employees than with a superior will likely lose the respect of the team. Seeing two distinctly opposing sides of a leader is never a good look. Jill says that if you are known around the office as being generous with information when you have it, you are more likely to be believed and understood by your staff when you can't comment on a situation, or have no say in the matter. Managing Age DifferencesWhen working with a group that includes both Baby Boomers and Millennials, Jill states that there is a clear difference between how each group obtains and processes information. While Baby Boomers grew up getting bank statements once a month, seeing their grades at the end of a semester and were oftentimes unable to talk to their parents until the weekend because of lower phone rates, the newest generation in the workforce often talks to their parents several times a day via text and can check their school grades or get a reaction from a thought on social media instantaneously. Where they don't get instant feedback is in the workplace. Jill recommends that leaders add feedback in their conversations with Millennials, discussing challenges, while giving them a path to grow. Reflecting on her own Management StyleAs news director at WITI-TV, Jill developed what she refers to as a "coaching newsroom," where people came to learn and discover their own opportunities to hone their craft. She put an emphasis on rewarding unique and original stories, as well as creating a family-friendly workplace. She says that if you allow your employees to bring their whole selves to their position without ignoring family and challenges at home, they will do a much better job at the office. However, after years of experience to reflect on, Jill also believes her team at WITI-TV would have benefitted from knowing what they could be doing better, and not just what they were already doing well. Recommendations on Getting AheadEmployees are often good at identifying problems or what's not working, and are more than happy to complain about it to fellow team members or their employer. Unfortunately, that's where the motivation stops. How can anything be fixed without change or an attempt to try something different? Jill recalls that it was her practice of volunteerism that worked best for her. By giving extensive thought to a challenge, and how it would fit into the greater context of what her team was trying to accomplish, Jill would not only take her recommendations to her superiors, but also offer to help or head up efforts to solve the problem. Jill says this is how the seeds of great leadership can be planted. Look at problems from the view of the organization and not just your own goals. If you are known as someone who is a good collaborator, people are more inclined to follow you knowing there is a promise of reciprocity. You don't have to be the best at your craft, but having the ability to take a more global approach, while rolling up your sleeves and being a part of the solution, will get you noticed! Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 127, originally published in March 2013. Jason Hartman is joined on this episode by Pasha Roberts, creator of the upcoming movie, “Silver Circle.” Pasha Roberts is the founder of an animation studio outside of Boston, Lineplot Productions. He is currently Director of its major production underway, Silver Circle. Lineplot began as an animation studio that provided 3D graphics to explain complicated economic situations to their corporate clients. Then they decided to take the creative route, creating an animated movie set in the future of hyperinflation and the collapse of the Central Banks. Pasha and Jason discuss several of the facets of the movie, including government seizure of commodities, such as precious metals and property, and freezing accounts. Pasha explains that once trust in the system is lost, there is no regaining it, and one likely scenario is a rebellion, with citizens taking matters into their own hands. Silver Circle is a film set in 2019 after a severe economic collapse. A group of Rebels are devising a plan to take down the culprit of this economic calamity, the Federal Reserve. One way they fight the Fed is through competition...they mint their own silver underground to disperse in the community in hopes to make the dollar obsolete. It is all wrapped into a love story that unfolds as an investigator from the Fed meets a Rebel and has to choose which side he is on. Their mission is to entertain and educate, and no, you don't have to be well-versed in economics to enjoy the film. Pasha holds a bachelor's degree in Economics and Russian Studies from The College of William and Mary, and a Masters of Science in Financial Engineering from the MIT Sloan School of Management. In addition to his MIT degree, his background includes twenty years of software development and successful entrepreneurship experience. As a person who loves mathematics, graphic design, and liberty, Pasha's corporate experience has molded him into a creative machine who believes using media and art to convey messages of social change can succeed.   Subscribe to Podcastification Apple Podcasts | Stitcher | Google Play | Podbean | iHeart Radio | Spreaker https://www.PodcastFastTrack.com/subscribe If I had a nickel for every time a client or potential client or random podcaster has asked me… How can I monetize a podcast? I wouldn’t need to monetize a podcast. It’s a natural question, I guess - there’s nothing wrong with making money from providing value to the world - and podcasts are some of the best vehicles for value-delivery I’ve ever seen. So heck yes, go ahead, monetize your podcast! You should if you can. But… it’s not quite that simple, is it? You can’t simply go out and monetize a podcast. You have to take a little time to figure out exactly what the options are, which one fits you and the purpose you have for your podcast, and so on and so forth and such and such. That’s exactly why I recorded this episode. My goal is to help you understand what I’ve seen as successful or potentially successful ways people have monetized their podcasts. I’m also going to be frank with you (or maybe I’ll be Joe this time) and let you know what I don’t like about each of the methods, what I do like about them, what the pitfalls may be, and whether or not that approach to monetization will make you rich or only pay for your weekly coffee. OK - coffee is more than a weekly expense, I get it. But you get my point, right? Here’s a rough outline of How to Monetize a Podcast [1:25] What do we mean when we talk about monetizing a podcast? [2:53] What are sponsorships? A fancy word for a commercial [8:01] Have you thought about hawking affiliate products to your listeners? [12:16] What would happen if you had a patron (or many of them) support your podcast? [14:24] Could make a membership community for your listeners (and charge for it)? [18:41] YOUR podcast should definitely feature YOUR resources If you want to Monetize your podcast, FIRST focus on delivering value When we talk about monetizing anything we’re talking about making money from it. I hope that’s not too unrefined for you sensitive types, but it’s the truth. You’re trying to figure out a way you can ask people for money in exchange for the value you’re delivering to them - in this case, your incredible podcast content (for example). That means you’ve got to be providing them the VALUE side of that equation. You owe it to your podcast audience NOT to fill their ears with fluff. It’s the people who throw together some quick and dirty (and useless) PDF download piece of junk who give all of us a bad name. Don’t be that girl or guy. Make your offer something worth having. And now that we’ve got THAT out of the way… Idea #1 to monetize your podcast: Sponsorships Whenever I hear people talking about monetization of their podcast, they usually mean gaining some kind of sponsorship. What’s a sponsor? It’s a fancy way of saying a person who wants to pay you to put commercial advertisements on your show. The ads could be pre-produced or they could be something you read. Either way, it’s a commercial, plain and simple. Sponsorships DO have benefits: Someone with deeper pockets than you is paying the bills for your show, at least partially It can be a type of recurring revenue for you If you/they can track sales directly from your listener base, it could be a long-term relationship But there’s also the drawbacks (the things I don’t like about sponsorships)... It’s a commercial. On your podcast. Part of what I LOVE about podcasting is that I get to listen to a topic I’m interested in WITHOUT interruption. Many of the companies that are getting into podcast sponsorships may not be directly related to your topic (Audible, Casper Mattress, etc.) When I have commercials from a mattress company, or an email list company - on my show about Christian Homes and Families - https://www.ChristianHomeAndFamily.com  it seems pretty obvious that I’m just trying to make money. Nothing wrong with that… but does it build trust? That’s what I care about - and what I think you should care about. The legalities of doing a sponsorship right can be a bit sticky at times. One tale I heard told was how a podcaster had to provide multiple months worth of “free” sponsorship to a sponsor because of supposed mistakes he was making in the way he read the ad copy. In his mind, the HOW of it wasn’t covered sufficiently to warrant the claim, but he didn’t want to lose the sponsor so he continued to consent to their demands. And that brings me to the biggest deal about sponsorships that I don’t like… Somebody BESIDES YOU has influence over your show You may say they don’t. But they do. If you’re concerned about what a sponsor might thing regarding what you say, or how you say it, or how it might reflect on them - they ARE having influence on you. The beauty of podcasting (again, in my mind) is that you get to do YOUR thing with nobody telling you that you can’t. So there. Naturally, you can do what you want when it comes to sponsorships. I’m sure there are good experiences out there to go alongside the bad ones I’ve heard about. It also has to do with the “type” of show you’re publishing. Some lend themselves to sponsorships more than others. In the end, you’ve got to do what you believe is best for you, your listeners, and the sponsor. Monetization idea #2: Affiliate relationships In case you’re new to this whole internet thing (like some attorneys I know), it would be a good thing for you to know what affiliate relationships are before I tell you to establish them… Affiliate (according to Entrepreneur Magazine): https://www.entrepreneur.com/encyclopedia/affiliate-marketing  A way for a company to sell its products by signing up individuals or companies ("affiliates") who market the company's products for a commission. Get it? #1 - You find a company that sells products or services your listening audience needs #2 - You make those products available to your listeners through an “affiliate link” on your website or show note #3 - When somebody clicks on that link, the company’s website is setup with a “tracking code” that recognizes that person as coming from your link. #4 - When/if they purchase, you get a commission. Simple enough, right? Affiliate relationships can be a gold mine for podcast monetization… sometimes. Maybe. It depends on a lot of things… but to me it’s an issue of whether your niche has legitimate products/services that you can offer to your listeners. Yeah, yeah, you can technically offer anything as an affiliate product - related or unrelated to your audience - but I don’t think you should. Here’s why… Your audience has done YOU the incredible favor of self-selecting you as their go-to resource for the topics you address. The feel like they know you (or are getting to know you). They like you (at least you’d better hope they do). They are starting to trust you. And trust is a valuable thing. My recommendation is that you do everything in your power NOT to violate that trust in any way. You want to build on it, make yourself a valuable, indispensable resource to your listeners. In my thinking, a big part of that is NOT trying to get them to buy any old thing. That goes back to making them feel you’re “just trying to make money.” Instead, why not offer them things that further connect them to you and your topic? That seems like a winner to me - and when you do it well, it really CAN be a gold mine. As an example: You’ve probably heard of a guy named Pat Flynn. https://www.smartpassiveincome.com/  One of his most successful affiliate relationships has been with a web hosting company called Bluehost. In September of 2017 he made $18.655.00 by referring people to Bluehost. That figure was even down by $815.00 from the previous month. The reason I know such details is because Pat publishes his income reports every month.  https://www.smartpassiveincome.com/income-reports/my-september-2017-monthly-income-report/  It’s a great idea - transparency to show people what’s possible by building your own thing online like he has. The point I want to make is this… that relationship with Bluehost is a hand-in-glove thing for Pat, it’s a service 99% of his listeners will need eventually, so he offers it to them with a full disclaimer that it’s an affiliate relationship. And it banks for him. Month after month after month. So… if you’re going to do affiliate relationships, go for it. Just make sure you’re offering things that are truly of benefit to your listeners and do it consistently and genuinely, like Pat does. But there’s another way to offer affiliate products to your listeners… Guest resources If you do guest episodes - conversations with experts in your niche or industry - you have a very natural, incredible opportunity to make some income through no more work than recording and publishing a great conversation with that person. Here’s how… Many people who are guest on podcasts regularly are established in their niche and have already created their own stuff - books, courses, coaching packages, events, etc. Before you hit the “record” button, stop to discuss what your guest wants to offer your audience. Yes - offer them the opportunity to highlight what they have to sell. And find out if there’s an affiliate-type relationship you might be able to establish with them. You’ll find many such people already have an official affiliate program setup. All you have to do is sign up and place the link in your show notes page. Then, during the interview, disclose that you have that relationship and make the offer. Better yet, let your GUEST make the offer since they know the product much better than you do. Then you get to simply endorse their offer and recommend it to your listeners. And keep in mind… podcast episodes are out there forever (as long as you keep paying your hosting bill). This kind of partnership could be a long-term cash cow for you if you do it effectively. It benefits you. It benefits your guests. It benefits your audience (at least it should). A caution about affiliate offers: Do it right Remember that trust thing I spoke of earlier? It’s vital that you maintain trust when it comes to affiliate offers. You don’t want your listeners to in any way feel that you’ve tricked them into doing something that will benefit you directly - even if the supposed “trick” was that you forgot to disclose an affiliate relationship. So don’t forget. Always, Always, ALWAYS tell your listeners - both in writing on your show notes page or website - AND verbally on your podcast audio, that you have an affiliate relationship with any product you’re recommending, if you do in fact have such a relationship. It’s honest. It’s clear. And I believe if you do it right, it can build trust with your audience even more. And… it’s the law.  https://www.ftc.gov/policy/advisory-opinions/letter-commercial-alert-concluding-respect-type-amplified-word-mouth  #3 Podcast Monetization Idea: Donations Let me ask you a question… What sort of compulsion do you feel when somebody does an amazing thing for you? You want to do something for them, right? It’s what social psychologists refer to as “the law of reciprocity” and there’s something to it. When somebody does good to/for you, you naturally want to do good for them. Take that concept and apply it to your podcast… If you are truly adding value to the lives of your listeners, don’t you think some of them are going to start feeling like they want to say “thank you” in a more tangible way than listening to your next episode? It’s natural. And it’s OK to make a way for your listeners to support your show. It’s called a Donation Model - and it works. You can see a sterling example of it here - on Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History Site.  http://www.dancarlin.com/dc-donate/  He offers 3 ways to donate - via PayPal recurring donation, via old fashioned snail mail, and via Bitcoin (yes, Bitcoin). And I could be a bit off on this, but I recently heard Dan interviewed at Podcast Movement 2017 and I believe he said that he only asks $2 per episode - and that the approach does VERY WELL for him. So… if I were doing this for my “Live Build Change” https://www.LiveBuildChange.com podcast (which I may do someday), I’d say something along this line… The Live Build Change podcast is my effort to help you live your faith in an authentic, genuine way, to build a business either part time or full time, and then to integrate those two things in a way that enables you to truly change your world. If you’d like to make a donation (one-time or recurring) to ensure I can continue to do so, you can find out how to do that at (website link). That’s it. No high-pressure tactics or begging. Just giving listeners an opportunity to reciprocate and moving on. A similar but different way to accomplish it… Patreon Back in the olden days… when Kings, Lords and Ladies, and Dukes ruled the lands… there was such a thing as patronage. For example: The famous artist Michelangelo had two primary patrons who supported him so that he could produce his artistic works: Pope Julius II, and the Medici family. Patreon is a fairly new approach based on the idea of patronage - it’s where your fans can intentionally set up a recurring payment to you SO THAT you can continue doing what you’re doing with your podcast. It’s really what I spoke of earlier - but again you’ve got to set it up in order to make the opportunity for your listeners/fans. Here are the details as I understand them: You set up the account Patreon gets 10% of what you receive (administrative costs at 5% and profit at 5%) Your fans can choose to send you any amount on a recurring basis Patreon takes care of credit card issues, chargebacks, etc. And the site claims to have funneled over $150 million to its users so far   My #4 Monetization idea for Podcasters: Memberships We’ve all done the membership thing at one time or another… When I was a kid I got into the Columbia Record and Tape Club. For one penny the Columbia people (whoever they were) sent me 14 albums I selected and I committed to buy 20 more in the next three years. I loved it. It was a membership I was happy to participate in. Today we have Netflix, Health Clubs, Spotify, etc. You get it. You understand memberships. But have you thought of the benefits received by the company OFFERING the membership? Fairly consistent recurring income Sure, a subscriber can cancel their subscription at any time (in most cases). But how often does that happen in comparison to the big number of subscribers an outfit like Netflix has? That dynamic is a reality that makes the income of a company like Netflix consistent. In fact, because of new subscribers, their revenue goes up over the long run.  Check out this graphic of Netflix profits: https://ycharts.com/companies/NFLX/revenue s And don’t miss the RECURRING part of the setup - people pay over and over and over for what Netflix has to offer rather than a one-time purchase. That. Is. Bank. Set-it-and-forget-it payments (they don’t have to invoice monthly) When I first got this concept it was a game changer for my business. Invoicing on a monthly basis is a hassle. There are costs associated with it both in time and in tangible goods like paper, etc. But recurring payments - subscriptions - do away with all that (with the exception of credit card processing fees). A one-time setup BY THE CUSTOMER starts a potentially never-ending source of revenue. Forgettable fees I don’t remember where I first heard the phrase “forgettable fees” but it’s brilliant - and important to understand. Think about it: How many of us even THINK about our $14/mo Netflix subscription? We just watch Netflix. We enjoy the service. We hardly give the monthly charge a thought when going through our credit card statements. Why? Because the amount is so reasonable compared to other expenses we have to pay - like a car payment or mortgage or rent. It’s a forgettable fee - and companies like Netflix count on that as a big part of why people will buy into their subscription service and STAY in. What does Netflix have to do with monetizing a podcast? SO much, my friends. What is stopping YOU from creating a membership for YOUR audience, YOUR listeners? No, you don’t have the tech that Netflix has. You don’t have the bankroll they do. But a membership model may not be as impossible as you might think. You can set up membership functionality with a fairly inexpensive plugin on a Wordpress Website and start things rolling today. WPKube.com lists 13 of the best plugins right here.  https://www.wpkube.com/best-wordpress-membership-plugins-match-budget/  The point is that there’s really nothing technologically that stands in your way. And there is definitely more than one way to do this membership thing… In fact, if you remember Episode 67 in this very podcast feed - https://podcastfasttrack.com/67  - Rob Walch explained how the good folks at Libsyn have created an option for every one of their customers to have a custom app for their podcast - and it can be set up to have “gated content” in it. Translation: Membership-ONLY content So think that through… You have your own custom app You encourage your listeners to download it They listen to your show, connect with you and each other, through the app You add ADDITIONAL content that ONLY MEMBERS can have But everyone can see it as available (but NOT access it) What do you think is the likelihood that many of those people who enjoy your show enough to download your app, will be willing to pay the forgettable fee you ask in order to get more goodness from you? I think it’s pretty high. This app option from Libsyn is DEFINITELY worth looking into. And Patreon is getting into this membership game as well… A few paragraphs earlier I mentioned Patreon as a donation platform - and so it is. BUT… (you knew that was coming, right?) They’ve been supplying their members with app integrations for a long time… things like Zapier, MailChimp, and Google Sheets. There’s a new one on the list now - Wordpress - which opens the door to integrating the Patreon payments portal to memberships ON your website. In a recent post from the Patreon blog - Patreon Powers Membership Across The Web -  https://blog.patreon.com/patreon-powers-membership-across-the-web/  the company highlights a new Wordpress plugin that essentially makes your site into a membership site, with Patreon as the payment gateway (by donation, of course). So… if you like the donation thing - and think it might fit with a membership thing - this is a VERY promising looking option for you. Cautions about setting up a membership I tried to set up a membership on one of my sites a few years back and it didn’t go so well. I still think the idea is a great idea, but both my timing and my implementation were off. Here’s what I learned… Critical Mass is vital In order to launch a membership of any kind you’ve got to have enough momentum to build a movement - of sorts. It won’t be enough to buy the needed plugins, install them on your site, and start announcing that you now have a membership. You just might hear crickets like I did. You’ve got to have a very excited, raving fan base established in order for a membership site to launch successfully. Some signs you might be ready… Your listeners ask you for help often You can’t keep up with the demand for new content Your industry/niche is exploding You get lots of engagement on social media when you post about your topics People tag you as a resource in their own conversations about your niche And that’s just SOME of what I’d consider. The good news is that if you take the time to set up a membership of some kind and you DO hear crickets, it didn’t cost you much. Chalk it up to your education. You’ve got to be able to deliver over-and-above value consistently It’s one thing to establish a membership site. It’s quite another to keep pumping it full of new, great, helpful content that makes the cost of admission worth it. True, a good membership will become a self-perpetuating thing over time, with members themselves adding great content that helps the community. But you’ve got to be the catalyst for that, the one who pumps the community up with enthusiasm, information, and helpful tools, tips, and tricks for your niche. If you don’t have time to do that - DON’T set up a membership site. An example of a guy who does this very well is James Schramko. He’s got a very successful business membership called Silver Circle. I’ve heard him talk about the power of his membership group both in terms of usefulness to members and income for him. It makes total sense. Here are a couple of James’ podcast episodes about memberships you might enjoy… How to Jumpstart Your Membership Forum https://www.superfastbusiness.com/business/how-to-jumpstart-your-membership-forum/  Advanced Subscription Membership Techniques https://www.superfastbusiness.com/business/497-advanced-subscription-membership-techniques-with-stu-mclaren/  Idea #5 for monetizing your podcast: Sell your own stuff To me, this one is the most obvious, no-brainer, you’ve-got-to-do-this option when it comes to monetizing a podcast. Let me explain… Your audience is YOUR audience. They’ve chosen YOU to speak into their ear-buds. They like what you have to say, that’s why they are listening. Doesn’t it seem natural that if you were to provide a resource they would be very interested in buying it? That’s what happened to Pat Flynn (mentioned previously). He had added so much value to his listeners over the years that they actually began begging him to make a product for them. That may not be where you’re at right now… but you’re on the way. I can say that confidently because every podcaster I know is eager to add value to their audience. And there’s nothing sullied or distasteful about creating something of enormous value and selling it to that audience. It’s the way the “free enterprise” system works. Give it some thought… You create your amazing product to help your audience on a deeper level You set your “asking price” Your listeners get to decide if it’s worth that amount - to them Those for whom it is, will buy it. Happily Excitedly And likely tell others about it when it delivers the value they are seeking Do you see how that works? Nobody was coerced. Nobody was pressured into buying. It’s a very natural process of exchange we participate in almost every day of our lives. You exchange your great content for their money. They exchange their money for your great content. And everybody is happy. Tips for making your own products a legitimate way of monetizing Create truly helpful, good stuff your audience can use When it comes to purchases there is NOTHING WORSE than buying something that turns out to be a disappointment. I remember buying an “iPod” for one of my kids from eBay years back, and when it arrived it was a cheap knock-off. I called it a “lie-pod” from then on. So disappointing. You DON’T want to be that guy or gal. You’ll destroy any amount of trust you’ve been able to build with your audience thus far, not to mention your reputation. So don’t shortcut your products. Make them great. Give it your all. Be ready to devote the TIME required to learn how to create a great product Building something great takes time. Decide right now that you’re going to be patient, but persistent. Learn. Grow. Make use of Youtube University. Get clear on what you’re going to build and how you’re going to build it. But don’t postpone your launch simply because it’s “not perfect yet.” It will never be perfect. Make it good - then publish it. Then you can concentrate on making it great as you get feedback from those who purchase it. Mention your resource often - on your podcast - on your website The “Build it and they will come” philosophy will NOT work with products you create for your listeners. You have to tell them that it exists. And you have to do it repeatedly. I suggest you create what’s called a “call to action” for every episode of your podcast. It’s an offer of help you make to your listeners via the product you’ve created. Tell them what it is. Tell them why they need it. Tell them how to get it. Nothing needs to be high pressure. Nothing needs to be urgent or over-hyped. Just be honest, tell them, and let them decide. But do it consistently. On every episode of your podcast. Think about it - how many times have YOU heard about a product or service that was of interest to you and then forgotten about it, or forgotten to look it up? Lots. But then you hear about it again and take action. Your listeners are the same. Do them the favor of always talking about your offer. And maybe you’ll find that monetizing your podcast through your own products is the BEST and most NATURAL way of monetizing you could have dreamed of. The folks over at Hubspot have created a post titled “31 Call-to-Action Examples You Can’t Help But Click.” Helpful stuff you’d do well to read and learn from.  https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/great-call-to-action-examples  And one more thing about monetizing via your own stuff... By "your own stuff" I don't only mean products. Think outside the box.. You could offer Coaching Group coaching Books Online courses Mastermind groups Events Speaking Workshops Retreats Consulting Service-related work Anything else you can think of that has a legitimate benefit to your audience That’s it. If you’re looking to monetize a podcast, pick the option that works best for you, your show, and your approach to business, and get started. The money won’t come in unless you open the door for it. www.PodcastFastTrack.com/5 - A podcast sponsor challenge for you! Keyword Finder (this is my affiliate link.. Pat Collins Snow Stick ~ "My career sort of morphed into two things, okay? I cover murders, and I measure snow. I have the official Pat Collins Snow Stick. It’s the only way to officially measure snow in Washington. I’m more accurate than National Airport, you just ask people." Pat Collins - Award Winning Reporter - NBC4 A Ockershausen: This is a special day for me for a lot of reasons, which I'll get into, but News 4 viewers know this man as the guy with the yardstick. I know them as the consummate professional, the go to guy to get the real story behind the story. The reporter that you lean into to really listen to what he has to say. He's an official member of Our Town, a native Washingtonian, a good Catholic. There's no such thing as a bad Catholic. He graduated from Notre Dame. He's a Vietnam vet. Not to mention that he's a Silver Circle winner. He has ten Emmy's, two Clarion awards, and he's the winner of the Chesapeake AP Award for the best featured reporter. I'd love to welcome my very good friend from Channel 4 and WRC-TV, Pat Collins. Pat Collins: Thank you. It's great to be here. A Ockershausen: Did you know, Our Town started as a story about Our Town, because we did a TV show that was short lived but it was popular at the time. So, Janice says to me, why don't we bring back some of the people and give them a view to the public of people we grew up with. And the names you'll know, and we're so delighted that, Pat, everybody has felt something about Our Town is on this show. And this is tour Town, 'cause you were born here. Growing Up on H Street NE - Swampoodle - Washington DC Pat Collins: Yeah, I love this city. I grew up on H Street NE, they call it Swampoodle. A Ockershausen: Wonderful place though. Pat Collins: 324 H Street NE, I grew up in the house that my grandfather had. My grandfather was an engineer on the B&O railroad. A Ockershausen: Wow. Pat Collins: And that's why we live so close to Union Station. My grandfather ... A Ockershausen: Could walk to work. Pat Collins: Could walk to work. And then my father, he went to school, and he became a doctor. And so what he did, is he set up his office on the first floor of the building, and then we lived on the second floor of two row houses. And that's where I grew up, 324 H Street. A Ockershausen: H ... Pat Collins: It's a Giant Food store now. In fact, if you go to that Giant down there, and you walk into the produce section, you'll be in my bedroom. It was H Street, you know, it's not ... A Ockershausen: Where are Little Sisters of the Poor? Pat Collins: They were right down the street ... A Ockershausen: Yeah, they were on H Street. Cottage Industry: Steal Pat Collins' 2 Watchdogs for Reward Pat Collins: They were patients of my father, Little Sisters of the Poor. And you know, it wasn't all that fashionable back then. It was pretty rough back in ... you know, we had two watch dogs. They were stolen three times. It was sort of a cottage industry: steal the Collins' dogs, wait an appropriate time, knock on the front door, and you get a 20 dollar reward. I mean, we bought those dogs back so many times, it was sort of funny. And then we park in the back, there was a parking lot back in the alley. I used to play in the alley. A Ockershausen: Now they're called rear driveways. But you and I know them as alleys. Pat Collins: Or muse. They call them muse. They actually put homes in them, call them muse. We call them as alleys. I'd rollerskate back in there, but ... A Ockershausen: Trash. Back When Trash Pickup was done with Burlap Pat Collins: Oh, the trash. And how they picked up trash back then, they didn't have those big ... A Ockershausen: They hustled about, didn't they? Pat Collins: They had these big burlap cloths they'd put down, and they'd dump the trash onto these burlap bags, and the men would have to hoist it up into the big trash trucks, and take ... A Ockershausen: They were hard working guys.

Jim Vance on the proper way to learn the language - "What’s it called? Diagramming. Remember we had to learn how to diagram a sentence? That’s how you learn the language by diagramming. When you know where every word goes and why it’s there. And what its point is. What its value is. I keep from hearing from all these kids I see today. Nobody ever taught them diagramming. They don’t even teach it anymore." Our Town host Andy Ockershausen and Legendary News Anchor Jim Vance, News4 A Ockershausen: And this is Our Town. And I appreciate so much being here. And, Janice, thank you so much to the both of you. I mean that sincerely. There are so few people, and you can attest to this, in this town that we can speak of as friends for almost 50 years. That's to be treasured as far as I'm concerned, man. A Ockershausen: What we've found out when we brought back the idea of Our Town, was the talk about Our Town to people, and everybody was saying, "well gee, I haven't heard from him." Or, "I didn't know he did that. Gee that's just great." So we've been so fortunate to have people such as Jim Vance. And really thinking that Our Town is special. Jim Vance: Right. A Ockershausen: And even though he was born in Pennsylvania? And he went to school in Pennsylvania, and he went to Cheyney University. I didn't know that, Cheyney University is part of the state system isn't it? Jim Vance: It used to be. When I was there it was one of the 12 state teachers' colleges. And I need to say, because I need to make the alum proud, Cheyney in fact is the first HBCU in the country. It wasn't founded as Cheyney, because it was founded as a trade school for black people in America by the Quakers. In I think, if I'm not mistaken 1837. Now there are some of the other HBCUs every time I say that, they raise their hand or raise their fist and say, "no, we were first, because you weren't really a college then." Or whatever the case may be. I say to hell with them. Cheyney is the first HBCU in the country and I am so proud to have been there. And may I say that, I am also so proud of the graduates of Cheyney. Ed Bradley and I, late of 60 Minutes- A Ockershausen: I was at a recent party that was a salute to you. And Ed Bradley was the main speaker. I was there. Jim Vance: Yeah, you remember that? A Ockershausen: A special night. Jim Vance: But he and I went to Cheyney together at the same time, played ball together, lived together. I was the best man at his first wedding. He was the best man at my first wedding. And we've each had a couple or three, but anyway ... We hold that in common as well. Anyway, I am so proud of him and of all the other graduates of Cheyney State. It's now called Cheyney University, but for all of who ... I came out in '64, so for all of us were there back in the day, it's still Cheyney State. A Ockershausen: Jim, that's well over 50 years ago. But you were born in Ardmore. Is Ardmore on the main line? I see it in my mind's eye? Jim Vance: You know what?
