A wild couple of weeks for Maryland basketball continued on Tuesday when the school abruptly announced the hiring of new coach Buzz Williams. Williams, who's spent the past six seasons at Texas A&M, has a track record as a winner, but doesn't stick around long wherever he goes and has no connections to the DMV. Was the the right hire and who made the decision? How well will he recruit and does Maryland have money to spend on players? What will Rodney Rice do? Plus lots more! Rodney Rice was one of a few Maryland players to enter the transfer portal this week. Things are looking bleak for the program as they try to fill their head coaching vacancy, but Jeff Ermann explained why there's still a chance Rice comes back to College Park.
Maryland put together one of its most dominant postseason performances in recent memory, crushing Illinois in a game that wasn't as close as the 88-65 final score. Is this becoming Maryland's best team since the championship squad? Is it possible Rodney Rice might have deserved some sort of all-conference honors? What NCAA Tournament seed are they looking at? Answers to those questions and lots more Terps talk in the IMS Radio postgame show! In the second hour of Inside Access, the guys discuss some Terps being snubbed by the All-Big Ten lists. They also talk about the Aaron Rodgers to the Steelers rumors and are joined by Jonas Shaffer.
Maryland controlled the game defensively, holding Michigan to 65 points and continuing their road win streak by beating the No. 17 Wolverines. After losing four straight road games to start the season, Maryland is a couple of buzzer-beater losses away from a seven-game road stream and rolling into the postseason. Afterwards, Jeff and Paul broke down the win along with: Selton Miguel looking increasingly like the X-Factor. Second-half Rodney Rice remains a thing. Maryland's offense is sagging lately and Julian Reese has 14 points in the past three games combined. Jordan Geronimo ends an unthinkable bench scoring drought and he's been an increasing energy boost. They also answered listener questions, including: How high can their NCAA seed rise? Will Maryland follow the lead of Nebraska and others and cancel the spring game? How many Terps will be drafted in the NFL Draft, and in whaichrounds? Where's Tafara Gapare and is there something to worry about from that Twitter post? And lots more! Rob and Jeremy took some time from Thursday's BBMS to recap Maryland's win over Michigan and discuss the play of Selton Miguel, Rodney Rice, and Jakobi Gillespie. Julian Reese and Derik Queen get a lot of love from the national media, and rightfully so, but is the other 60 percent of the starting 5 the real reason for Maryland's surge up the rankings?
Maryland basketball's gotten good enough that it doesn't need its best effort to beat a lot of the teams on its schedule. That was the case in the Terps' 88-71 win over USC on Thursday. Afterward, the IMS Radio crew broke it all down: -- Rodney Rice has been quietly posting big numbers for the past month. -- What does their NCAA Tournament seeding look like? How high could it go? -- A new recruit to keep tabs on for next year. -- When's the last time there's been this much buzz around the program? And lots more ... Indiana let a late lead slip away in the final minute as Maryland escaped Assembly Hall with a 79-78 victory, dealing a crushing blow to IU's NCAA tournament hopes. The Hoosiers built a four-point lead in the closing minutes behind huge plays from Anthony Leal and Myles Rice, but defensive breakdowns and poor late-game execution proved costly. After getting clutch plays from Leal and a strong second-half shooting performance from Rice (3-5 from three), Indiana seemed poised to secure a crucial home win. However, failing to foul with a foul to give and defensive confusion on Maryland's final possession led to a Rodney Rice three-pointer that put the Terrapins ahead. IU's final offensive possession was marred by substitution confusion and resulted in a forced shot that missed at the buzzer.Key Talking Points:Efficient offensive performance (1.24 points per possession) wasted by defensive lapsesMaryland shot 12-24 from three while repeatedly finding open shootersMyles Rice (12 points) and Anthony Leal provided huge second-half sparksLineup and execution issues in critical final minute prove devastatingAnother tough home loss further damages NCAA tournament resumePlus, as always, the Banner Moment, Meaningful Moments You Might Have Missed, Inside the Numbers, and our Game Balls, Hustle Award, and Lingering Questions. The Hokies are coming off of a bye week and host Notre Dame for the first time since 2018 in Lane Stadium. A game in which the Hokies lost by multiple touchdowns. But Virginia Tech and the 15th ranked Irish are both trying to find their offensively, struggling to find consistency at the quarterback position, and have been carried by strong defensive performances thus far this season. So, something has to give this weekend in a primetime matchup under the lights at Lane Stadium, and, don't look twice, but the Hokies are actually favored by half a point as of Wednesday night.
