Connacht Rugby and the IRFU have announced the appointment of Stuart Lancaster as the club's new Head Coach. Lancaster has signed a two-year contract and arrives at the province with a wealth of coaching experience at the highest level of the sport, across all three major European leagues and at international level. He most recently served as Head Coach of Racing 92 in France, and before then enjoyed a hugely successful seven-year spell as Senior Coach of Leinster Rugby. With primary responsibility for the day-to-day coaching of the team, he helped lead Leinster to four consecutive PRO14 titles and four Champions Cup finals, including victory in the 2018 decider. As the news broke, Galway Bay FM's William Davies joined John Morley and Darren Kelly on Galway Talks. == He made the move to Leinster after four years as Head Coach of the England national team, with whom he led for four Six Nations campaigns and the 2015 Rugby World Cup in his native country. He was appointed to that role after four years as the RFU's Head of Elite Player Development, where his primary remit was to help young players realise their potential at club and international level. Lancaster began his coaching career over 20 years ago, as Head of Academy at Leeds RFU. He was then appointed Head Coach of the Leeds Tykes in 2006, leading them to promotion to the English Premiership in his first year in charge. After a further year as Head Coach, he was promoted to the RFU. As Head Coach, Lancaster will also have responsibility for defence, thereby completing next season's coaching team. Joining him will be new attack coach Rod Seib, scrum & contact coach Cullie Tucker, and lineout & maul coach John Muldoon. Lancaster will take up the role in time for the beginning of pre-season training in July, and will be formally presented to the media and wider Connacht supporters next month.

Is group fitness helping or hurting your body composition goals? In this Fitness Friday episode on the Habits and Hustle podcast, Liron and I dive into the controversial world of group fitness classes like Orange Theory, Barry's Bootcamp, and F45. We discuss why these high-intensity classes can spike your appetite, burn out your adrenals, and leave you injured—plus what's actually working in the group fitness space. We also explore the rise of Hyrox as a better alternative to CrossFit, why Pilates shouldn't be your only workout, and the social benefits that keep people coming back despite the drawbacks. Liron Kayvan founded BFLA in 2019. He's a NASM Certified Group Fitness Instructor, Personal Trainer, and Transformative Life Coach. Liron has competed in Amateur MMA, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Rugby and has been a Fitness Coach for over 10 years. What we discuss: The rise and reality of group fitness popularity Why Barry's Bootcamp can spike cortisol and appetite The "aimless running around" problem in most classes Hyrox vs. CrossFit: A safer group fitness alternative Why Pilates alone won't change your body composition The social benefits that make group fitness worthwhile When group fitness works vs. when it backfires The importance of having specific fitness goals Why "something is better than nothing" still applies How to choose group fitness that actually serves your goals Thank you to our sponsor: Therasage: Head over to therasage.com and use code Be Bold for 15% off TruNiagen: Head over to truniagen.com and use code HUSTLE20 to get $20 off any purchase over $100.

Join DiscourseGareth Davies, Mayor of The Real Science of Sport, is ready to welcome you as a citizen of our VIP community! To join the conversation, make a monthly pledge at Patreon.com and get access to the shared expertise and passion of fellow listenersShow notesIn this week's Spotlight, we tackle an intriguing training question from a listener in our Discourse community: do short surges during easy or moderate training days undermine the training benefit? To explore this, we look to the current Giro d'Italia, where Richard Carapaz and rising star Isaac del Toro offer real-world examples of how intensity, even in brief bursts, may create a significant physiological cost. While small deviations from planned intensity are not only acceptable but often necessary, trouble arises when these efforts become too frequent or too intense. We introduce the concept of a physiological budget, and how consistent overspending can lead to a kind of training “bankruptcy,” where the cost outweighs the benefit. We break down how it's the intensity that exponentially increases physiological stress, and how to manage that cost wisely in your own training. Then we shift gears to rugby, where the red card rule is about to undergo a significant transformation. Under the new law, a team will no longer play with 14 players for the rest of the match—after 20 minutes, they can bring on a replacement. In response to split opinion in the Rugby community, Gareth asks: “What's the big deal?”. Ross explains why this change has divided the sport, delving into the broader context of concussion prevention, and how sanction was meant to carry the message for behaviour change. Ross shares insights from his newly published paper showing that women are concussed in the same way as men, adding a crucial layer to the ongoing head injury debate. In our news wrap, we stay on safety, where the NFL has decided not to ban the controversial "tush push". We examine how that decision parallels rugby's own risk-management principles. Beatrice Chebet ran the second-fastest 3000m in history last week, putting herself onto a controversial list of Chinese names who had appeared to move that World Record out of reach. Ross offers a prediction that it's a matter of time before the WR falls to Chebet (along with others). And the Enhanced Games claim a “world record” performance of its own, leading us to again discuss the ethics, science, and inevitable sales pitch driving the campaign, and why giving oxygen to the now transparent anti-aging commercial objectives of the Games may not be a good idea.LinksThe question that inspired our Training Zone discussion - for Discourse members onlyRoss' recent paper on the risk of head injuries in elite women rugby playersThe NFL does not ban the 'tush push'.
