Allyson Felix is the most decorated American track and field athlete of all time. She's also a mother. Those two identities came into conflict in 2018 when negotiating a contract renewal with her shoe sponsor, Nike. Ultimately, Allyson broke ties with Nike because the new contract presented a significant pay cut and lacked adequate maternal protections. After struggling to find a new shoe sponsor, Allyson and her brother/agent, Wes, decided to take matters into their own hands and start their own shoe company, Saysh. This week on How I Built This Lab, Allyson and Wes talk with Guy about their journey to the top of the track and field world, the decision to leave Nike, and how they built the iconic shoe that Allyson wore during her gold medal performance at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Plus, why most name brand shoes aren't designed for women's feet, and how Saysh is working to change that. Finding racing shoes shouldn't have been a struggle for Olympic champion Allyson Felix. She had already won 32 career medals and helped usher in game changing pay guarantees and pregnancy protections. But inequality knows no bounds, and she still saw disparities in a footwear industry that didn't bother to consider bodies that weren't male.So she teamed up with her brother, Wes, and together they built Saysh, a collection of stylish, functional sneakers designed for everyday performance. Inequality might know no bounds, but neither do the Felixs.About host Kevin RutherfordKevin is a human-centric leader helping you to unlock your team's full potential by creating a dynamic and engaging work environment. But off the track, she's also covered a lot of ground: Her work as an activist led Nike to change their sponsorship policy, adding protections for pregnant athletes and new moms, marking a major industry shift. Along the way, Allyson also became an entrepreneur, founding footwear and lifestyle brand Saysh with an aim to create an encouraging and supportive community for women. Why So Many Athletes Are Launching Fashion Brands

BoF's Daniel-Yaw Miller unpacks why — and how — sports stars including Russell Westbrook and Megan Rapinoe are running their own labels, with full financial and creative control.  Background:  Athletes have long been part of the fashion conversation. In the past, they've capitalised on their influence by inking brand endorsements with the likes of Nike and Adidas. Now, stars like the NBA's Russell Westbrook, soccer player Megan Rapinoe and runner Allyson Felix are taking it a step further and launching their own labels in pursuit of more financial and creative control.  “A fashion brand can provide a revenue stream that will long outlast the playing career of an athlete,” said Daniel-Yaw Miller. “Athlete-run brands give their founders freedom they could not experience in a typical endorsement deal.”  Key Insights: Tennis champion Rene Lacoste's namesake label is one of the earliest examples of an athlete starting a brand. One of the latest is NBA star Russel Westbrook's Honor the Gift, which just showed its Spring 2023 collection at Paris Fashion Week.  Founding a brand gives athletes more control over creative direction, finances and their future; whereas endorsement deals often mean athletes have little say, are restricted in what they can wear and will expire upon their retirement.  Many athlete-founded brands are imbued with a sense of purpose. After leaving Nike, track star Allyson Felix founded footwear and apparel label Saysh — which just closed an $8 million funding round led by Gap's investment fund — with a nod to her advocacy for maternity rights baked in, allowing mothers and pregnant women to trade in shoes as their foot sizes change.  Though many athletes, including Westbrook and Felix, are pushing out brands toward the end of their playing and running careers, younger players are starting their careers with the mindset that they will eventually run fully-fledged businesses like Honour the Gift or Saysh. Additional resources: How Athletes Went From Selling Merch to Building Fashion Brands: High-profile athletes used to make money by inking licensing deals that churn out jerseys and shorts bearing their names. Today, sports stars like Russell Westbrook and Megan Rapinoe are running their own labels, with full financial and creative control. How NBA Star Russell Westbrook Is Changing How Men's Fashion Works: Once mocked for his garish outfits and lenseless eyeglasses, the Oklahoma City point guard is designing clothes for Barneys and updating the way Nike markets to men. Why Luxury Brands Want in on Football: Despite the rocky history between fashion and football, luxury brands from Moncler to Dior are looking to benefit from the cultural power and global audience of the world's most popular sport. “I want to be able to leave room to be able to say, ‘No, there's like real stuff to do out there beyond just doing a deal.' And that does mean that I have to be more selective but hopefully, it also means that we'll be able to create more change. Even though you aren't one of my athletes, you still get to benefit from the work that we're doing. And that is Nike changing our maternity policy and being able to look at a new contract like Athing's and see that clause there that protects women's maternity. That to me is like, ‘Yeah, I don't ever have to represent you, but I'm glad I got to be a small part in putting that clause in there because that is for you. It is there for you so that you don't have to go through the stuff that I went through with Allyson that I hope no one ever has to experience. So yeah, it's a small group. It's a tight-knit group. But hopefully, the change can spread beyond just our little group.” Wes Felix is a track and field agent and also the co-founder and co-CEO of SAYSH. Just a few weeks ago, news about the new company went public when Time Magazine published a story that his six-time Olympic gold medalist sister Allyson and he were starting their own footwear company. The Saysh One lifestyle shoe ad the spikes that she wore at the Olympic Trials are the first two products to come out of the new venture. Wes shares the story about how this came to be, a little bit on how his sister took a chance on him to become an agent and represent her after his competitive days ended, how the split from Nike motivated him and Allyson to pick up the pieces and try something new. I got a lot of solid feedback from my episode with Tracksmith CEO and founder Matt Taylor so this is a good follow-up to that one.
