If we create good institutions, then we can live up to our good intentions.Knowing and articulating our values is essential. But when the metaphorical Siren's song fills the air, is knowing our values enough to ensure that we live by them?According to Ken Shotts, a professor of political economy at Stanford Graduate School of Business, having stated values is just expressing aims not necessarily actualizing them through concrete policies and practices. “We need those binding institutions to help us live up to those intentions,” Shotts says. From incentive structures within organizations to regulatory bodies, laws, and civic organizations in society at large, Shotts explains how carefully designed institutions can ensure that we don't just espouse good intentions, but that we actually live up to them.Key Takeaways: Good intentions aren't enough: While defining our values is essential, we need binding institutions to ensure those values are upheld at the personal level, organizational level, and in society at large.Keeping businesses on track: At an organizational level, key "institutions" include tangible incentive structures like compensation, promotion criteria, monitoring processes, and cultural norms around praiseworthy and unacceptable behavior.Keeping society on track: On a broader scale, societal institutions like regulations, laws, and civic groups provide crucial checks and balances to channel business activities toward positive societal impact beyond just profits.More Resources:Ken Shotts is The David S. and Ann M. Many of you have asked to hear from people who have started a non-profit! This week, you'll be hearing from Lisa Shotts, Co-Founder of Gaining Ground Literacy. Lisa has a heart for helping and a mind for data-driven results. Her considerable time spent in the classroom as a teacher -over twenty-five years – provided insight into the importance of having access to summer reading material. As a former instructional reading coach for a local school, she could see the notable digression students experienced in reading skills over the summer break. She could also see that it boiled down to opportunity, or lack there-of, in economically disadvantaged communities. In these areas, also referred to as reading deserts, students simply didn't have access to books or reading material. That's when she and her colleague Kirby Mackenzie realized that they had the power to make a simple change that would provide a lasting and life-long impact. That simple change of getting books into the hands of children in reading deserts has grown into a local non-profit known as Gaining Ground Literacy.

This week our guests are Alice Lemkes and Philippa Battye, who tell us about their cycling adventure to recreate the 1936 cycling and Hostelling holiday of Mary Harvie. As part of their 90th anniversary celebrations and in support of Scotland's Year of Stories 2022, Hostelling Scotland have teamed up with the Adventure Syndicate, a group of female adventurers and storytellers who promote mental and physical wellbeing through their outdoor endeavours, to recreate an epic 500-mile cycle and youth hostelling adventure. The original two-week, two wheeled holiday was carried out by 17-year-old hosteller Mary Harvie, from Shotts in North Lanarkshire, with her two older sisters, Ella and Jean, in 1936. This epic journey, that began in Glasgow and saw the women explore the North West Highlands, Skye, Highland Perthshire, and Stirlingshire, was documented in Mary's diary. Now, their route has been partly followed - and partly improvised on - in the 21st century by a trio of cyclists from The Adventure SYndicate, Lee Craigie, Alice Lemkes, and Phillipa Battye from the Adventure Syndicate set out from Glasgow Youth Hostel on their own seven-day, 500-mile, on and off-road cycle adventure, an appreciation of the Harvie sisters' incredible cycling trip. IT was 15 love to football when Tony McInally chose to go with it rather than tennis when he was 14. But then he fell out of love with the game in his early 20s and went and played amateur with his mates instead. Stepping down helped him step back up and he would go onto have a successful playing career in the juniors. This week Tony tells us about those days in the second part of his interview. There are the fancy suits he'd wear and why he was often referred to as city boy at Shotts. There's the teammate he'd loan a tie to and Davie Menelaws' lost stereo. In a packed show we also hear from the West of Scotland League's fixture secretary Kennie Young on covid and what's required to ensure a completed campaign. TONY McINALLY was the manager in waiting as a player who's won most things he can in the dugout. Now he's trying to take Cumnock back to where they belong. A win at Darvel last weekend showed just what he's building at Townhead Park. Tony joins us on the show this week and in the first of two parts we look back at his stellar career as a gaffer. He tells us why he was once accused of being a coal thief – and we look back at his successful spell at Shotts Bon Accord which ended with a year-long ban for a first offence. He explains why he thinks the league setup is better now than it was back then despite his dislike for this season's relegation scenario. There's also his near five-year reign at Pollok, the benefits of cutting his teeth in management away from the spotlight and his little book of players to keep an eye on. There's Tayport head of communications Pete McEleny's roundup of the scores from across the country. Spanish exports reached a historic high in the first nine months of 2016, growing year-on-year in terms of revenue by 1.2%. Data published by the Secretary of State for Commerce on Monday shows that foreign trade has generated €188.49 billion so far this year. What the figures don’t show is that Spain seems to be caught up in the overall slowdown of global trade. The country is performing better than most of its competitors, but its overseas sales have been decelerating steadily since July, to the point that in September, growth was zero. Spain’s minority Popular Party (PP) government will extend the application of the 2016 budget to buy itself more time at the negotiating table, sources at the Finance Ministry have said. Spain’s ruling Popular Party (PP) has presented a reform proposal to Congress that could result in the banning of memes, social network users’ way of gaining comic revenge on the politicians that rule our lives. Official documents compiled by jail chiefs detail that week’s most high-profile events, including 300 inmates running amok at Bedford jail, causing £1 million of damage, and two prisoners escaping from Pentonville and going on the run. Ministers have quietly drawn up plans to introduce a soft system to speed up dealing with ill-discipline in prisoners who commit ‘lower-level violence’ while still in Britain's jails. She earned a bachelor’s degree in performing arts at Mississippi University for Women. She continued her studies abroad, earning a master’s degree in applied drama from Goldsmiths University of London. Sarah is passionate about grand adventures and capturing the micro-adventures in the everyday. She blogs at www.lovelettertoadventure.com. She recently launched a kickstarter campaign called Project STIR. Project STIR is a culmination of Sarah’s passions for food, family and adventure. It was so much fun chat with Sarah about what success means to her, how she got to her current definition and her latest project, Project STIR! We start out as we do every week by asking Sarah what her definition of success is. "I'm starting to really see the growth process itself as success, not just achieving a certain goal." Sarah also talks about the struggle she had after getting her masters and finding the work she had hoped.  She shares with us how she went through a period of feeling like she had to prove herself. A feeling we know many of us have had. Sarah mentions lots of amazing people and courses that have inspired and shaped her journey. April Bowles Olin Mayi Carles   Kris with a K   Tiffany Han (originator of the term "crazy faith")   April's Build a Better Creative Blog Course on Creative Live:   (The class Mayi & April taught together is no longer available as Mayi is on baby leave.)   Project STIR FB group   The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron Laura Hames Franklin (Superhuman Breakfast) We end our chat talking to Sarah about her latest project, something we are so thrilled to see launch! Project STIR is a series of documentary films capturing the universal language of love in the family kitchen. The films will take place in kitchens around the world and will tell the stories of Abuelitas, Nans & Mamaws passing on their heirloom recipes to the next generation. But, this isn’t just about funding a film. Our mission is to rekindle the family recipe. It is our hope that this project will inspire families to take the time to slow down and learn their own family’s heirloom recipes the world over. Families have volunteered to share their heirloom recipes in: France. New Zealand. Turkey. England. Panama. Wales. Spain. Norway. Slovenia. Grenada. Canada. Jamaica. Croatia. Sarah Shotts, the director and creator of Project STIR, got the idea after documenting a local family’s chicken dumplin’ recipe. That first film really resonated with people and started a growing conversation about family recipes in her blog community.
