Sir Graham Henry (aka “Ted”) is one of the greatest All Black coaches of all time. He left the role with a win record of 85%In 2011, with a little help from his friends, he coached the All Blacks to a Rugby World Cup win, breaking a 24-year drought. This was made even more remarkable on account of a thing called The Henry clause- a rule made by the NZ Rugby union in the late 1990s to make sure Graham would never get to coach the All Blacks after he went overseas to coach Wales. We talk about that clause and so much more- his early years and how he got together with his soulmate, Raewyn. His self-diagnosed depression which saw him quit coaching in the UK, his 103-test coaching career with the All Blacks and much more.Sir Graham Henry is a sharp operator, and this was a lot of fun. The fact Saturday was the highlight of Wayne Smith's coaching career tells you something. It's not like Smith hasn't been around a while and done a bunch of cool stuff. I do worry for the side given Smith and Sir Graham Henry are off to retirement and that's a lot of brilliance leaving the building. And you cannot deny that what they did transformed the team. The performance in the northern hemisphere and the performance through this World Cup have been your classic example of what coaching and strategy can achieve. The thing I enjoyed most about it all, was the joy the women play with, there is a lesson for everyone in it. You don't have to be tense and inward looking, the world doesn't have to sit on your shoulders, and the pressure doesn't have to get to you. You can in fact, as they have shown and Smith told us about several times on the programme, be mentally free. When you are mentally free all things are possible. You can truly express yourself. And if you are doing that and you happen to be blessed with the appropriate talent, the combination of the two is unstoppable. The lesson is applicable in all walks and forms of life, not just the sports field. In fact, it looked like it was a lesson the Brits hadn't quite learned. They were the favourites and by some margin and that last lineout was theirs. The maul they ran would have won them the game, and yet when it counted, they didn't cope. They weren't mentally free. The fact all this was played at home made it what it was, it's not like we haven't won it before. But we are in an age of promoting and recognising women's sport, plus we were doing it at our place, so all the ingredients were there. The sport has a way to go. The variation in talent is far too great. But if you are going to play host, it behoves you to come out victorious. And if you can arrange it by beating the previously best side in the world in a thriller, that's what makes sport magic.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Thanks very much Nathan Brown. We wish you well. Not one of the club's longer tenures. But the Brown era, if era isn't too grandiose a word to use, is now officially over. Stacey Jones is in for the rest of the season. It's hard to know how these things work. The likes of Sir Alex Fergusson, Phil Jackson, Bill Belichick, Sir Graham Henry, and Lois Muir, were they singularly spectacular? Could they have taken any team and made them great? Or did they have a pile of luck? Did they have a budget to recruit? Did they come along at the same time a crop of rare talent showed up? Or did a whole bunch of stuff sort of align itself and make them seem greater or luckier than they might have been elsewhere? The point being, getting rid of Nathan Brown doesn't solve anything. Brown is the usual scapegoat offered up in a sort of mid-season sacrifice. His replacement, Stacey Jones, as much as I loved what he did for us all those years ago, he's clearly not a solution because he never left the club when he retired. If he was an answer Brown would not have got the job.The trouble with the Warriors, and I speak now with over a quarter of a century's worth of observation, is their problems are so far and so wide, it's hard to know which leak to plug.Coaches are obvious. But their relocation has been brutal; you can't blame them for that. Their lack of success feeds on itself.  When you don't win, great players don't want to play for you.Their behaviour doesn't help. Matt Lodge gets into a scrap with the owner and walks with next year's wages. No real explanation is given. Kodi Nikorima is gone. Shaun Johnson's arrival is good news, but at the wrong end of his career.Every season there is a strange and frustrating series of events as to why they don't do as well as they could or should.Ownership, coaching, Covid, recruitment, and injury. It's a sad bewildering and seemingly never-ending story. The latest chapter is a coach who turned up for five minutes. This time it feels a bit “back to square one.” Hiccups you can take, hurdles you overcome, and setbacks you rebuild from. This though feels a bit more serious. Too much of what should be going right isn't. There isn't momentum in some areas to cover off the trauma elsewhere. This feels like you got over Covid but then a bus hit you.Not only isn't this our year. I'm not sure what needs to be done to ever make it our year.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A bold call ahead of the search for the next All Blacks coach.Applicants are devising their plans and pitches to be Steve Hansen's replacement, with an announcement expected before Christmas. While a lot of people seem to have their thoughts on the matter, former New Zealand Rugby CEO David Moffett believes the players shouldn't have a say."They are the employees. Any player that believes that they should be speaking out on the selection of the coach is a little bit out of line."Sonny Bill Williams is one of the players to have commented on the hunt, saying that a Maori or Pacific Islander should be appointed to the role. New Zealand Rugby invited 26 Kiwi coaches to apply for the vacant role as All Blacks head coach, asking those invited to bring their team of supporting coaches into the process with them.NZR chairperson Brett Impey said NZR wrote to a number of coaches directly asking them to apply for roles with the national team, with a five-person panel to ultimately make the selection.Alongside Impey on the panel will be former All Blacks coach Sir Graham Henry, NZR Chief Executive Mark Robinson, NZR Head of High Performance Mike Anthony and former Silver Ferns Coach and High Performance Sport New Zealand director, Waimarama Taumaunu. Outgoing NZR boss Steve Tew elected not to be on the panel.

I'm number 143 and the other 142 names on there are legends of the game so to have your name alongside them is very special," McCaw said."There's been a few different highlights for different reasons. I think one of the big highlights is the day you get your first cap. You dream of it as a young kid to represent your country. You only do it once so that's special," he told World Rugby's Twitter account."To finish off with a World Cup in my very last test. The way that ended with a grin on your face when you finish, I couldn't think of a better way for that to happen."SOUTH AFRICA SWEEPA day after winning the Rugby World Cup, South Africa won the trifecta of team, coach and men's player of the year.England centre Emily Scarratt, back playing 15s after two years of sevens, was the women's player of the year.Flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit received the men's award after starting and starring in nine of the Springboks' 11 tests this year, including the Rugby World Cup final win against England in Yokohama.Du Toit became the first South African to win the award since 2007, when Bryan Habana earned it in the same year the Springboks last won the World Cup.Du Toit was nominated with teammate Cheslin Kolbe, Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones, New Zealand flanker Ardie Savea, England flanker Tom Curry and United States hooker Joe Taufete'e.Rassie Erasmus was named top coach after leading his team of the year South Africa to a record-tying third World Cup crown after a pool defeat to the All Blacks, and a first Rugby Championship in 10 years.Scarratt resumed playing 15s like she'd never been away. On this episode, we sit down with one of the most well-respected figures in world rugby, Sir Graham Henry. For those who don’t know him, he is credited with rebuilding the All Blacks legacy into what it is today and is regarded as one of the most successful sports coaches in history. Now, for those that aren't interested in rugby, I know what you're thinking, that you don't want to listen to us talk about rugby for an hour. Neither did I, so I took a completely different angle to avoid focusing rugby. We lift the hood on how he managed to build one of the greatest teams in sporting history, how and why he wanted to be the Greatest of all time, why setting audacious goals is so essential and why mental health has become so prevalent in today's society. This episode is a goldmine of valuable information for sports fans, leaders, entrepreneurs or anybody wanting to build an influential culture or make something of themselves. It kicks in 5 minutes through and will take you on a ride. Enjoy.

Get hold of the ball and we'll "kill them".That's the simple formula from World Cup winning coach Sir Graham Henry, who says equal possession will produce a Bledisloe Cup victory for the All Blacks on Saturday night.Henry told Radio Sport All Black fans should be concerned after the walloping Australia dished out in Perth."Of course we should be worried…the All Blacks will be worried and so they should be," he said."They were soundly beaten by a very good Wallabies side."I think the All Blacks gave away eight penalties on the weekend which is not a lot in the normal game but Australia only gave away four…which has a pretty big effect on the result I reckon."They had 11 lineouts, we had four – they had 11 starts in lineouts. So we lacked ball. We only had 30 per cent I think but with that we scored four tries which was a good result really."So we just need more ball. If we can get 50 per cent plus we are going to win the game, because we've got the players to use that ball effectively."And our defence believe it or not was better than the Australians - they had 70 per cent of the ball and scored six tries."We need to play the game correctly so we get more than our share – if we get 60 per cent we're going to kill them."Henry hopes coach Steve Hansen, his old deputy, sticks with Richie Mo'unga at first five-eighths, leaving Beauden Barrett at fullback."Beaudie is a fantastic player whether he plays 10 or 15, and Richie Mo'unga has been the form five-eighth for a couple of years," said Henry."His (Mo'unga's) composure under pressure is hugely impressive. He's also a bit of a game breaker because he can take on the line, he's a good goal kicker, and he just needs time in the saddle I think."He's a young player internationally…I've got no problem with the strategy, it just needs time. Yeah, I think there's time."Henry said the All Blacks needed to get "in the zone" and suggested avoiding social media in a massive week like this would help to eliminate distractions.Whether the All Blacks shut themselves off or not, they understood the pressure on them."There's no hiding from the (country's) expectation and I think that's what brings out the best in the All Blacks," he said."It's important they control their environment and put a filter on it, particularly in a game week and in this situation where they need to produce a fantastic performance."It's very important they get into the zone on the weekend and are right on the job. That's all about the right preparation."Sir Graham Henry is currently teaming up with the New Zealand Blood Service to build the World's Largest Reserve Bench. To learn more visit jointhebench.co.nz

LISTEN TO FORMER ALL BLACK SCOTT ROBERTSON OFFER HIS TAKE ON THE UPCOMING MATCHThe All Blacks don't lose often. Losing two in a row? It's rarer than an attempted dropped kick.Following the Wellington defeat to the Springboks two weeks ago, the All Blacks are looking to avoid something in Sunday's clash against Argentina that has never happened under the reign of coach Steve Hansen - back-to-back losses. It's a remarkable statistic. The last time it happened was on the eve of the 2011 Rugby World Cup when the Sir Graham Henry-coached All Blacks were defeated in Port Elizabeth and Brisbane.Sam Whitelock, who will captain the All Blacks on Sunday, started in both those losses. It's a run of 97 tests since that 2011 loss to the Springboks was backed up by another defeat to Australia. Over that time the All Blacks have suffered just eight defeats but none back-to-back.In the same seven-year time frame world number two ranked Ireland have suffered consecutive defeats on 10 occasions, England 12 times, South Africa 13 and Australia a staggering 20 times. And that's just back-to-back. When you look at extended streaks it shows an even bigger gap between the All Blacks and the rest of the rugby world. While New Zealand haven't even had a 'losing streak' of two - South Africa have had a four-game losing streak twice, Ireland a five-game losing streak while England have had two separate five-game losing streaks. The last time the All Blacks had a losing streak of more than two games? 20 years ago. Also working in the All Blacks' favour is that they've never lost to Argentina and were convincing 46-24 winners when they last met in Nelson on September 8. However they were equally highly-rated favourites against the Springboks. This morning, veteran second five-eighth Sonny Bill Williams shared his experience of being in the environment following a New Zealand defeat."The times I have been involved in a loss, we delve deeper into the solutions and we have those tough conversations that need to be had. And we've done that this week," Williams said this morning after being named in the starting side for Sunday's test.Number of consecutive defeats since August 27, 2011All Blacks - 0Ireland - 11England - 12South Africa - 13Wales - 19Australia - 20Scotland - 23

It's Super Rugby Final week here at Green and Gold Rugby but because there are no Aussie teams playing we are going to bring you another in our series of Rugby World Cup 2015 Podcasts. Following hot on the heels of Simon Poidevin last week, this week we focus on the Number 8 position. When it came for looking for a guest for this episode, the choice was easy. How could you go past the great man, Toutai Kefu? Kefu who made his Wallaby debut during one of the lowest points in Australian Rugby but who would go on to feature in so many of our most significant moments. None moreso than that 1999 Rugby World Cup win. We talk to Toutai about the culture within that great Wallaby team, and the build up that culminated in their crowning as Rugby World Cup Champions. Oh and don't worry, we talk about his infamous dust-up with Trevor Brennan of Ireland, but the focus is definitely on his on-field exploits. Once we cover off on 1999, the focus shifts to 2015 and whether the Wallabies can replicate his own team's success and just who Toutai would pick as the Wallaby #8. These Rugby World Cup 2015 Podcasts with our Wallaby World Cup winning legends have proven to be a highly popular set of shows. This is based on our listeners' love of hearing from these former legends of the game about their own experiences, but also to gain their perspective on the current game.Well the Queensland Rugby Union have come on board as a sponsor of this podcast series as a way to promote their Reds Long Lunch which will happen on 16 July this year. The special guest on this week's show is arguably the most passionate man ever to pull on a Wallaby jersey - 1991 Rugby World Cup flanker, Simon Poidevin. The passion Poido had (and still has) for the Wallabies is dripping from the podcast this week as he takes us on a journey from the disappointment that was the 1987 Rugby World Cup, through two retirements to a Rugby World Cup victory at Twickenham in his last ever test match for his beloved Wallaby team. As a close colleague of current Wallaby coach, Michael Cheika, Simon is then able to provide some fairly handy insight as to his thoughts on how this Wallaby team may go at this year's tournament, before giving us his tip as to who he would pick as the flankers for the Wallaby team. Following on from our Super Rugby chat, Will and Hugh join me to wrap up Round 15 of the Super Rugby week before looking towards Round 16. But not before they answer the five burning questions.
