by Pastor Chuck Ryan “In Your Anger do not Sin” Text: Ephesians: 4:17-27; (vs26-27) Thesis: God created us with certain emotions and instructs us on how to manage our emotions. The Apostle Paul recognizes that anger is a normal human emotion. (vs26) He states, “In your Anger…do not Sin.” God gave us the ability to feel anger when there is injustice. God the Father expressed anger in the Old Testament when His people were unfaithful. “Be careful, or you will be enticed to turn away and worship other gods and bow down to them. Then the LORD's anger will burn against you, and he will shut up the heavens so that it will not rain and the ground will yield no produce, and you will soon perish from the good land the LORD is giving you.” (Deuteronomy 11:16-17) The Hebrew word for “wrath” literally means “Flared nostril” Jesus experienced anger when the religious leaders had “turn the house of prayer into a den of thieves” (Mathew 21:12-13, Mark 11:15-18, John 2: 12-17) However, Jesus in his anger did not sin. “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.” (Hebrews 4:15) The opposite of anger is apathy, which is lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern. The Apostle Paul also acknowledges that anger, if not controlled, can turn to sin. (vs26b) Anger is a powerful emotion capable of doing great harm. The first murder recorded in scripture was due to uncontrolled anger. “but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let's go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.” (Genesis 4: 5-8) Cain's uncontrolled anger turned into blind rage. God warned Cain that “sin was crouching at your door; it desires to have you,” “When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.” (James 1:13-17) God instructed Cain, “but you must master it”. Be aware, uncontrolled anger will “give the devil a foothold” in your life. (Vs 27) The method of controlling your anger or being able to NOT yield to any sinful temptation is relying on the power of Holy Spirit. Ask God to teach you what or who makes you angry. Ask God if your anger is valid. Ask God for the ability to control your anger. Ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit.
James 1:19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger... Anger is a Strong emotional reaction of displeasure, often leading to plans for revenge or punishment. Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger..." " 'There is no peace,' says my God, 'for the wicked. ' " "Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice." Anger is a killer, a desperate spirit that inflicts pain and havoc on it's victims There is a demon called anger. On several occasions you may have seen 2 or more responsible looking person's arguing and the,argument got heated up and in a fit of rage one of them stabs or hits on the other only for the person to collapse and die before any resuscitation can be achieved. Anger is a spirit and we see it's influence destroying homes,friendships, careers ,nations and sadly even Christians leaders. The Bible’s first mention of anger among humans is seen in book of genesis.. Cain and Abel offered sacrifices to the Lord. Abel’s sacrifice was acceptable but Cain’s wasn't accepted.. (Genesis 4:5-7) So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it. God encouraged Cain to act rightly, and not allow anger. Cain ignored God's counsel instead he embraced anger, and kills Abel his brother. That was the origin of household wickedness. Many many followed the route of anger in bible but it led to bad end Levi and Simeon angrily wipe out a city in their anger. Saul, in a rage, tried to kill David. Jonah got angry when God spared Nineveh. Moses, who was known for meekness,humility ,an anointed ,a prophet and deliverer in anger disobeyed God while frustrated by the people of Israel. Leadership comes into test in our ability to remain calm in an annoying or provocative situation. (James 1:19-20) let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Anger impairs our ability to make wise decisions.it knocks away common sense. (Psalms 37:8). “Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil” Its much Better to wait, do nothing, and ponder the matter once anger is no longer clouding our judgment. Some wives due to their nagging nature have turned good husbands to angry husbands. Some husbands to who intimidate and oppress their wives have turned gentle submissive wives to become angry and vengeful women. I remember the story of a woman who had suspicion of the husband cheating on her .unfortunately the husband was asked by the neighbour pls give my sister a lift to the nearest bus stop .this angry wife only saw another woman standing by the husband's car. she took a knife ran out to the woman without waiting to hear anything kept stabbing the innocent woman till she was dead in pool of blood. Of course that's man slaughter she ended in prison for life. Anger can make a person say things that will damage relationships,business opportunities, marriages.anger kills Anger is a demon.dont allow it come near you.whatever makes you angry avoid it.if you have issues with anger seek the face of God and place of prayer for real deliverance. I pray the holyspirit will help you in Jesus,name. Proverbs 22:24-25) Make no friendship with a man given to anger, nor go with a wrathful man, lest you learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare. Anger is contagious. If you are around it too much, you become more prone to anger ourselves.
Am I My Brother's Keeper? Reader: Angus Macdonald Date: 2nd April 2021 Time: Passage: Genesis 4:9 ------------------- God's question to Cain put him in a sticky spot. Cain had just murdered his brother Abel, probably in a fit of jealousy and bitterness. God had accepted an offering from Abel but had rejected Cain's offering, most likely because Cain's heart did not really love God anyway. God always looks at our heart and sees why we do the things we do. So Cain's reply to God was first of all untruthful. He said "I don't know." But then he added an insulting response: "Am I my brother's keeper?" Cain and Abel — two brothers torn apart by Cain's hatred. It makes such sad reading. And the other Bible verses which refer to Cain tell us how his hatred of his brother became a byword for wickedness right through the history of God's people. We read that among the Jewish people Cain was thought of as an example of sinfulness and one who instructed others to do the same. What a terrible legacy! And it could have been so very different. He said "Am I my brother's keeper?" Of course he was. Each of us has a great responsibility to love and care for our own brothers, sisters and family members, and a responsibility towards other people as well. We need especially to look after those who are vulnerable and who cannot care for themselves. ## Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, help me to be a true brother or sister both to my family and the wider family of God and all who need a brother's care and love.
The disappointment in realizing that we have any part to play in our salvation apart from simply trusting in God without boasting is expounded from the understanding given in this episode about the meaning of the Hebrew names, Cain and Abel. Genesis 4:1-10 Adam had intimate relations with his wife Eve. She became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.[a] Eve said, “With the Lord's help, I have given birth to a man.” 2 After that, Eve gave birth to Cain's brother Abel. Abel took care of sheep. Give gifts and offerings Abel's offering found favor with God but Cain's did not. Make sure your offering finds favor with God. Giving gifts leads us to find favor with both God and man as we see from the example of Jacob who found favor with Esau following his substantial gift. “And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.” (Genesis 4:4) “I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, male and female servants. Now I am sending this message to my lord, that I may find favor in your eyes.” (Genesis 32:5) King Solomon offered a sacrifice of 22,000 cattle and 120,000 sheep and goats. And so the king and all the people dedicated the Temple of God. The priests took their assigned positions, and so did the Levites who were singing, “His faithful love endures forever!” They accompanied the singing with music from the instruments King David had made for praising the Lord . Across from the Levites, the priests blew the trumpets, while all Israel stood. Then at the end of the celebration, Solomon sent the people home. They were all joyful and glad because the Lord had been so good to David and to Solomon and to his people Israel. The Letter to King Artaxerxes 7 In the days of Artaxerxes, Bishlam and Mithredath and Tabeel and the rest of their associates wrote to Artaxerxes king of Persia. The letter was written in Aramaic and translated.1 8 Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king as follows: 9 Rehum the commander, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their associates, the judges, the governors, the officials, the Persians, the men of Erech, the Babylonians, the men of Susa, that is, the Elamites, 10 and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Osnappar deported and settled in the cities of Samaria and in the rest of the province Beyond the River. 11 (This is a copy of the letter that they sent.) “To Artaxerxes the king: Your servants, the men of the province Beyond the River, send greeting. And now 12 be it known to the king that the Jews who came up from you to us have gone to Jerusalem. They are rebuilding that rebellious and wicked city. They are finishing the walls and repairing the foundations. 13 Now be it known to the king that if this city is rebuilt and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and the royal revenue will be impaired. 14 Now because we eat the salt of the palace2 and it is not fitting for us to witness the king’s dishonor, therefore we send and inform the king, 15 in order that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers. You will find in the book of the records and learn that this city is a rebellious city, hurtful to kings and provinces, and that sedition was stirred up in it from of old. That was why this city was laid waste. 16 We make known to the king that if this city is rebuilt and its walls finished, you will then have no possession in the province Beyond the River.” The King Orders the Work to Cease 17 The king sent an answer: “To Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe and the rest of their associates who live in Samaria and in the rest of the province Beyond the River, greeting. And now 18 the letter that you sent to us has been plainly read before me. 19 And I made a decree, and search has been made, and it has been found that this city from of old has risen against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made in it. 20 And mighty kings have been over Jerusalem, who ruled over the whole province Beyond the River, to whom tribute, custom, and toll were paid. 21 Therefore make a decree that these men be made to cease, and that this city be not rebuilt, until a decree is made by me. 22 And take care not to be slack in this matter. Why should damage grow to the hurt of the king?” 23 Then, when the copy of King Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum and Shimshai the scribe and their associates, they went in haste to the Jews at Jerusalem and by force and power made them cease. 24 Then the work on the house of God that is in Jerusalem stopped, and it ceased until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia. In this episode, we continue our journey through Genesis by looking at the story of Cain and Abel in Genesis 4:1-17. In this dark passage of scripture, there are hints of grace and mercy. In this murderous chapter of human history, we see how the sinful actions start not with the external, but come from the internal motivations and dispositions. And we are reminded that the God who punishes Cain in just judgment is also the God who offers a temporary suspension of doom to Cain in exile. This is a shadow of the future judgement and grace offered to all of us in the person of Christ and the gospel. 200621 Trinity 2 Bulletin200621 Trinity 2 Divine Service200621 Sermon on 1 John 3:13Sermon manuscript:The apostle John says at the beginning of our reading: “Do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you.” Let’s first understand who he is talking about. There are two groups of people here: “brothers” and “the world.” When John says, “brothers,” he is referring to Christians. He is not excluding women when he says “brothers,” as it might seem. He uses the word “brothers” because all Christians receive the adoption of sonship when they are baptized into Jesus. Baptism is a union with Jesus whereby all Christians, male and female, receive Jesus’s status before God. The only way that anybody can be a child of God is by being born again with the water and the word of Baptism. All Christians are one in Christ, God’s Son. Therefore, when John says, “brothers,” he is not excluding women or girls. He is referring to all those who are baptized into Christ and through their relationship with Jesus have become children of God. The other group of people that the apostle John refers to is “the world.” This word has a special meaning in Scripture that isn’t exactly the same as how the word might be used by someone who is unfamiliar with the Scriptures. What is meant by “the world” are those people who remain in their original sin, who are not converted, and who therefore retain all the traits that come naturally to us all according to our sinful flesh. These traits would be selfishness, fear, suspicion, cynicism, lying, sneaking, and so on. Christians, as well as unbelievers, have to contend with these traits, because all people are born in sin. However, in those who believe in Jesus, the Holy Spirit does not let these traits of the flesh go on unhindered. The Holy Spirit fights against these evil natural impulses. He draws us towards the opposite of these traits, such as faith, hope, love, honesty, kindness, and so on. Those who do not have the Holy Spirit, those who do not believe, are left to themselves with their sinful flesh. These are the people John refers to as being “the world.” So another way that you could say what John says here is: “Do not be surprised, Christians, when those who are unconverted hate you.” Here we have something to chew on. Whenever something strikes us as strange in the Scriptures we do well to stop and consider it. What John says here is something that our modern church culture does not understand. Those who are unconverted will hate those who are converted. The world will hate us if we are indeed converted, if we are indeed Jesus’s brothers. The standard operating procedure for practically all Christian churches for a very long time has been that we want to make it impossible for anyone to hate us. We want everybody in the community to say that we are the best church in town, and that only a fool would say anything bad about us. How different this is from the way that Jesus’s closest disciple, John, speaks. It’s as though he wants to comfort us with our troubles by saying that we shouldn’t be surprised—this is just how it goes—the world hates Christians. Since the common understanding among us is so different from what John says, we have a lot to learn here. I’d like to start to get at it by trying to answer two questions with this sermon today: (1) why does the world hate us Christians? and (2) what should we Christians do about it? For answering the question of why the world hates us Christians, it is helpful to hear what John says just before our reading today. Our reading began with verse 13. Here is verse 11 and following: “This is the message you have heard from the beginning: Love one another. Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the Evil One, and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own works were evil, while those of his brother were righteous.” Then we have the verse that we are especially considering today: “Do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you.” So what John is saying is that we Christians are in a similar situation as Abel found himself in with his brother Cain. Let’s briefly review this story from Genesis chapter 4. Cain was Adam and Eve’s first born son. Abel was their second born son. When these two brothers offered sacrifices to God, Abel’s sacrifice was found to be more acceptable than Cain’s. This made Cain angry. Cain was warned that he should control his anger, but didn’t. One day he went out to the field with his brother and killed him. The first human being born on this earth in the natural way ended up being a murderer. This tells us something about our human nature. So what can we learn from this about why the world hates us Christians? John tells us. He says that Cain’s works were evil, while his brother’s works (Abel’s works) were righteous. Cain couldn’t stand the sight of his brother, because whenever he looked at his brother he saw his own judgment and condemnation. Now it might seem that Cain was angry just at his brother Abel for being the way that he was, but that is not true. Cain is angry with God and the judgment that God has rendered upon him with his Word. We can see this if we do a thought experiment here. Suppose that everything happened just the way that Moses tells us it happened, but with this one change: Suppose that Abel took the side of his brother Cain. Suppose that even though Abel’s sacrifice was better than his brother’s that Abel said, “No, God, you shouldn’t say that. I’m going to stick with my brother Cain. The way that Cain has been living is just fine. Who are you, God, to judge what’s right or wrong?” If Abel had joined his brother Cain in his rebellion against God, in his hatred against God, then Abel and Cain would have been friends. They would have been on the same side. So Cain’s anger is not so much against Abel as it is against God. It is only because Abel doesn’t abandon God and side with Cain that makes Cain see Abel as his enemy. Cain hates Abel, because Abel remains faithful to God’s Word rather than being faithful to his brother. Here we can see the answer for why the world hates Christians. The world hates Christians because Christians do not take their side. If Christians told everybody that everything that they were doing was just swell, and they should keep it up, then how could the world hate such people? It is when Christians remain faithful to God’s judgments against wickedness that those who do wickedness get upset. So the reason why the world hates Christians is not just because they don’t like the person. It is because they don’t like the God who is shining forth in such a person. Now that we know why the world hates Christians, let’s consider our second question: what should we do about it? One option has already been laid out. We could switch sides. Any Christian who abandons God’s judgments that others find offensive will quickly find that they are seen as kind and welcoming by those who do not believe. But if we do this, then we will no longer be Christians. We’d actually be God’s enemies, raging against his judgments like Cain did. While this seems like it should be an unacceptable option that no Christian would actually go for, that isn’t the case. The history of God’s people, as it is recorded in the Bible, shows that they are always sorely tempted to side with the world. And this makes sense from a certain perspective. Abel would have had a much better quality of life if he would have given up on God’s judgments. His quality of life would have been much better because Cain wouldn’t have killed him. That’s how it always is for God’s people. If you pretend that you know nothing of God’s Word, that you know nothing of God’s commandments, and that whatever your friends and family decide to do is a-okay with you, then you will have a better quality of life—at least during this earthly life. But if you correct a mocker or warn a wicked person, as it says in our Old Testament reading from Proverbs, then watch out. You will be inviting insults, abuse, and hatred upon yourself. But this course of action is not without cost either. In fact, the cost is as steep as steep can be! When Christians do this, they are abandoning the battle field against the devil. They are essentially quitting. Nobody can be saved when God’s Word is brought to nothing—when it is silenced, or reinterpreted, or ignored, or whatever else. The way that sinners are saved is by repenting of their wickedness, that is to say, by fearing God’s judgment, and yet to draw near to him because of the promise of forgiveness for Jesus’s sake. Being saved by repenting for sin and believing in God’s mercy is the way that the whole Bible speaks of all God’s people. This is the only way that anybody will be saved until the end of this world. So if we just quit—if we won’t stand by God’s judgments that condemn ourselves as well as everybody else—then there is no hope of salvation. The Gospel will have been taken away entirely. Instead of churches preaching God’s Word, they will become mutual appreciation societies, where everybody slaps each other on the back and says what jolly good fellows they all are. This is the opposite of preaching Christ, and him crucified. This is the devil, dressing himself up as an angel of light. Therefore, we have to remain faithful to God’s judgments, which do good by bringing sinners into sorrow and repentance. This necessarily means that the world will hate us, as the apostle John says, for repentance does not come naturally to us. But not all the world will hate us, for some of them will be converted. There is no such thing as a Christian who resents the sharp word that was spoken to them that exposed his or her sin. All Christians are glad whenever they think back on that person who cared about them enough to say what was difficult to say, or do what was difficult to do. Solomon also comments on this in our Old Testament reading. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One (that is, Jesus) is understanding. The one who is wise receives rebuke and instruction and becomes wiser still. It is needful for us to keep this in mind, for we are not yet dead. And it may be, that God sends a wise reprove into our life. We must not fly off the handle and go off in a huff when that happens. Let it bring about fear of the Lord’s judgment in you. Then it will do you good. Then you will look to our crucified Lord Jesus, not as someone you can take or leave, but as the one whom you need to save you from hell, where you’d otherwise rightly go. Therefore, in reaction to the world’s hatred against us Christians, we must continue to remain faithful to God and his Word. But how do we deal with these people who get so angry with us that they might even want to kill us? Here, too, we need to have our ears wide open, for the Bible does not speak as we might naturally think. Jesus has a lot to say about this. He says that when we are struck on one cheek, we are to turn, so that they might strike the other as well. Whoever sues us for our cloak, we should give them our garment as well. Do not curse those who persecute you. Bless those who persecute you. Do not resist evil, but overcome evil with good. We could continue to go on with these instructions to us Christians at some length, but we’ve already heard enough to get the idea. We are to love our enemies. Enemies, by definition, want to hurt you. Therefore we are to love those who hurt us. We are even to be kind and generous to them—giving them the wealth that we have worked hard to collect for ourselves. This surely does not mean that we lie to them or alter God’s Word for them so that we take their side over and against God. That would not be kind at all, for how else can they be saved except through the Word of truth? But otherwise we are to yield to them, even giving up our life for their sake if it should come to that. The willingness to give up everything, even our own life, for our neighbor, is not something unusual for us as Christians. It is simply following in the way of our Master. This is something that is impossible for flesh and blood, but all things are possible with God. May God grant us the Holy Spirit towards this end.

Cain had just murdered his brother Abel, probably in a fit of jealousy and bitterness. God had accepted an offering from Abel but had rejected Cain's offering, most likely because Cain's heart did not really love God anyway. God always looks at our heart and sees why we do the things we do. So Cain's reply to God was first of all untruthful. He said "I don't know." But then he added an insulting response: "Am I my brother's keeper?" Cain and Abel — two brothers torn apart by Cain's hatred. It makes such sad reading. And the other Bible verses which refer to Cain tell us how his hatred of his brother became a byword for wickedness right through the history of God's people. We read that among the Jewish people Cain was thought of as an example of sinfulness and one who instructed others to do the same. What a terrible legacy! And it could have been so very different. He said "Am I my brother's keeper?" Of course he was. Each of us has a great responsibility to love and care for our own brothers, sisters and family members, and a responsibility towards other people as well. We need especially to look after those who are vulnerable and who cannot care for themselves. ## Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, help me to be a true brother or sister both to my family and the wider family of God and all who need a brother's care and love.
Of course, families are and always were, God's idea. Yet so often these days, families seem to be, well, let's be honest, just a tad dysfunctional. And as we each grapple with the realities of family life, all too often, we look around at all those apparently normal, balanced, near-perfect families out there and wonder to ourselves – what's wrong with my family? What's going on here? The Dysfunctional Family Well, here we are, a new week! And today we are going to start a discussion, you and I, about something completely different. Over these next few weeks on the programme we are going to be taking a look at what it means to build a godly family. I'll tell you why. Recently here at the ministry of Christianityworks we asked our friends and supporters to write in to us to share their prayer requests and here's what struck me: at least eighty percent of the prayer requests we received – and there were a lot of them, I have to tell you – at least eighty percent were asking us to pray for people's families: for my son or my wife, for my daughter, my husband, my auntie, my cousins. You know something? We actually care about our families. As difficult and as strife torn as many families are, blood is thicker than water and our families really do matter to us And we don't have to look very far, you know, in society to see todays families are becoming more and more dysfunctional. But here's the thing: we kind of know that but somehow we imagine that, well, there's this perfect family out there. In fact, the perfect family is the norm and the dysfunction we see in our own families, well, we are just the only ones. "It's my fault. I've botched it up. We're just stuck with this – it's the way it is. The teenagers who don't respect their parents; the adults in our extended families who are having feuds and they haven't talked to each other for ages because they argued over distributing the assets of their parents when they died eight years ago. No, you see, it's just my family that's a mess. And that's the thing, it's what I've been handed; it's the hand I've been dealt and there's just nothing I can do about it – there's just nothing. What's the point?" It's true, isn't? Living out families is sometimes like living out a gorilla war. It's so in your face; every time you come home; every time you walk in the door – the whole "family thing" greets you. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting that every family is a basket-case – hopefully yours isn't but sometimes we are so close to it all, it kind of feels like it is a basket-case. We get it out of perspective. And in the middle of this constant relational tension you can get to feeling like, "Aw, God, what's going on here? Why can't I have a normal family like everybody else – like those people next door?" And let me tell you, I'm not talking about this whole "family thing" from some perfect place, I can tell you. Before I gave my life over to Jesus a decade and a half ago, I've got to tell you I made some huge blunders that changed the very course of my life and I am still far from perfect. But since that time God's been teaching me a new way – I'm still learning. So I'm at a certain place in my journey and you are at a certain place in your journey and let's get over this comparing and judging, "Other people have better families than me." There's only one issue: "Where do we go from here?" And I for one, I am about building a godly family because there is such reward in that; such harvest and not just one day in the future but along the way, here and now – the joy of investing and sacrificing to make a difference in the lives of those whom we love. We will talk about that over the coming weeks but today I just want to give us some comfort that God knows all about dysfunctional families. You can take the very first human family, if you like – Adam and Eve – and their two sons Cain and Abel. You probably know the story of Adam and Eve – you know, the Garden of Eden, then they sinned; they ate the apple and God kicked them out and they had a couple of sons. But I want to show you something about this family – the interactions between the people – that's a real stark reminder about the dysfunction in family. You often hear people talking about Adam and Eve and the snake and all that stuff from a theological perspective – and that's great – but what about from a family perspective? Okay, Adam and Eve, they've sinned; they ate from that one tree that God told them not to. God comes looking for them – they are hiding in the garden. I have always thought that was incredibly smart to be hiding from God! And God brings Adam to account: He says to Adam, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” And the man said, “The woman whom you gave me, she gave me the fruit from the tree and then I ate it.” And then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent tricked me. I ate.” And the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you among all animals and among all wild creatures. Upon your belly you shall go and dust you shall eat for all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your offspring and hers and he will strike your head and you will strike his heel. Comes from Genesis chapter 3, verses 11 to 15 So there it is: they rebelled against God and God – well, Adam blames Eve. The very first thing he does when he does something wrong Adam blames Eve and Eve blames the snake and I guess, the snake didn't have a leg to stand on! You see what happens? We go from perfect harmony to dysfunction. God tells them that that is going to be the norm from now on there's going to be enmity between the man and the woman, there's going to be enmity amongst the children and that's exactly what happens. Listen to what Cain and Abel ... what their relationship ends up like: Abel was the keeper of sheep and Cain the tiller of the ground. In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground and Abel, for his part, brought the firstlings of his flock, their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering but for Cain and his offering, God had no regard. So Cain was very angry and his countenance fell. The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry and why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted and if you do not do well, sin is lurking at the door. Its desire is for you but you must master it. Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go out into the field,” and when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. Genesis Chapter 4. So there you have it – the very first family. They rebel against God; husband turns against wife, brother kills brother. It's the absolute natural state of affairs for a family that has turned its back on God. But here's the good new, there's a flip side to this coin for the family that turns back to God. A family that honours God; a family that has God as the head of its household – that family can expect God to bless it. Have another listen. Deuteronomy Chapter 5, beginning at verse 8: You shall not make for yourself an idol whether in the form of anything that is in heaven or above or that is on the earth beneath or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them for I, the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of their parents to the third and fourth generations of those who reject me but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments. In other words, when we put God at the head of our lives and the head of our families, He will show us His steadfast, unwavering love, not just to us but to a thousand generations. And you know what that means? It doesn't matter how bad things have become in our families, when we honour God, He in turn will honour us. Breaking with the Past One of the things that bring so much dysfunction into families are the things of the past – things that have been handed down genetically, emotionally and spiritually. Our parents hand so many things down to us – their genes, their strengths and their weaknesses. People say that I look like my dad, I even walk like him but it wasn't till I saw myself in a TV interview that I was shocked to realise that my very mannerisms are so much like my fathers. It's pretty scary! And so alcohol addictions and bad tempers and a tendency to whinge and complain; all sorts of things end up being handed down from generation to generation. Dysfunctional families are much more likely to produce children that grow up to have their own dysfunctional families. Where does it end? Well, I have a simple answer to that – it ends today, right here and now, this very minute – that's when it ends. Let me explain. See, it's really easy to blame our parents for things ... for the bad things that happen. If abuse happened in your childhood or you had a father with a bad temper or your parents smoked; whatever it is and they handed those things down to you. I don't know about your parents but mine, I had good parents. They weren't perfect, they just worked hard and I am sure they can look back at their lives and go, "Well, I could have done this better or I could have done that better," but there is no point in just sitting here and blaming them and blaming the past. Things do get handed down from generation to generation, some of them are good things but others aren't. When you go and see your doctor, one of the first things he'll ask you about is your family history. Is there a history of high blood pressure or diabetes or heart disease or mental health issues or breast cancer? Family history has a lot to do with our physical well-being. Now my dad had Type ll Diabetes and in the end it took his life. My mother has high blood pressure and so I can sit here without exercising, eating whatever I want and whinge and complain about the fact that they could give me diabetes and high blood pressure, or I can get off my backside and do something about it. There's a pretty clear alternative. Most illnesses, you can work against them and reduce the risk and it's the same with emotional and spiritual things that get handed down to us. Maybe you had parents who were into the occult, maybe you had parents who fought like cat and dog, maybe you had parents who knew about God but simply didn't honour God with their lives. Well, you've got two choices – you can sit there and complain about it or you can do something about it. Have a listen to what happens when we put other things before God. We looked at it earlier. God say I am a jealous God and I will punish children for the iniquity of their parents to the third and fourth generation. But those who show steadfast love, I will bless to the thousandth generation. It's pretty straight forward! When parents turn away from God and chase after other things, it's going to have an impact – not just on them – but on their children and their children's children. It's obvious. We've seen how it works. A child brought up by an alcoholic father is likely to suffer the consequences of that in adulthood. There's every chance that it will impact not just them but it will be passed down to their kids. It's not rocket science – we've all seen it but look at the alternative that God talks about: Showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments. A thousand generations – a new generation every twenty five years, that's twenty five thousand years! We are only a fraction of the way into that since this was written (Deuteronomy) a few thousand years BC. Do you get it? God's blessing to us and our families when we honour Him is just massive, and you see that in a lot of godly families. This dynasty of blessing flows down from one generation to the next. Maybe there are things from your past – emotional, spiritual – that are impacting your life. Today is the day that we can choose to break that chain. Today is the day that we can choose to break free from the power of the past. Listen to the prayer that Nehemiah prayed: O Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps the covenant and steadfast love with those who love Him and keep His commandments, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you, day and night, for your servants the people of Israel. Confessing the sins of the people of Israel which we have sinned against you, both I and my family have sinned. And Nehemiah then goes on to ask for forgiveness; he turns away from that and he moves on. It's a simple prayer; it's a prayer of repentance. It breaks the linkage to the sin of previous generations – Nehemiah, his ancestors and his family. We have all sinned! God is a God who forgives and God is a God who makes all things new again. He breaks the power of the past over us because His heart is to bless to a thousand generations. The Apostle Paul writes in Second Corinthians chapter 5, verse 17: If anyone is in Christ Jesus he is a new creation. Old things have passed away and all things are new. Let me take you back to some of the things that maybe you've had handed down to you – addictions or anger or bad behaviour or whatever it is – we can receive freedom from those things simply by praying and believing. God will work out His answer to our prayer in our lives in His good time Meanwhile we can take stock of those things and decide to start doing something about them. Not in our own fancy strength but through a relationship with Jesus which transforms us. It is time to end the cycle of sin in our families – to stop it dead here. The buck stops with you and me. How about it? Setting the Course Now it doesn't matter how dysfunctional a family is at the moment, all it takes is one member of that family to turn back to God; to honour God and God can and will make an awesome and mighty difference. It may take time, it may take longer than you and I would prefer but God is a God of grace – His heart is to bless our family to a thousand generations and He's looking for some godly men, godly women, godly children to take a stand and say, "Enough is enough! It is time for me to build a godly family." First Corinthians chapter 4, verse 20 in the Message translation says this: God's way is not a matter of mere talk, it's an empowered life. That's why this ministry I'm involved in is called Christianityworks because it actually does. So let's talk about making it happen – an empowered life that sets about building a godly family. But you know what I have noticed? We can talk about a lot of stuff but most times nothing changes unless we actually do something. It's true at work; it's true at home! How often have you been to a meeting at work and people talk about a whole bunch of stuff: "We'll do this, we'll do that", but after the meeting no one does anything. And guess what? Nothing changes; nothing! We come home at the end of the day; we need a rest; we ignore things – the badly behaved children for example. There's a great proverb: Proverbs chapter 29, verse 17 that says: Discipline your children and they will give you rest; they will give you the delight of your heart. I have seen this down at the local supermarket. The mother's is with the child and the child just grinds her down through bad behaviour and she's tired ... she's too tired to do anything about it so she lets this kid run riot, causing her grief and causing everybody else grief as well. Why does it happen? I'll tell you why – probably because dad is too tired to discipline the child when he comes home. Does he enjoy their behaviour? No! But this kid walks all over his mother, she's exhausted and ... and mind you the kid is only seven – wait till the little terror becomes a teenager! You see, there's fruit in building a godly family – tremendous fruit. Discipline your children and what do you get? Peace and a delighted heart! What you sow is what you reap. The problem is sowing is hard work sometimes and reaping seems ... well, such a long way off, doesn't it? Let me tell you something – we have been talking about building a godly family but it ain't going to happen unless we step out in faith and start making it happen. Yes, it's about God blessing our efforts but if He's got nothing to bless then, He got nothing to bless. I mean, if I am twenty kilos overweight, forty pounds, and I want to be trim, taut and terrific and I pray and pray and believe God for a breakthrough but I keep eating and drinking the same old rubbish and I don't exercise. Let me ask you something – is God going to zap me while I am lying on the sofa and miraculously remove the excess weight? Well, He could, and with God I never rule anything out but I have never quite seen it happen that way, have you? Why would we think it is any different building a godly family? We behave ourselves into a bad place by what we say, what we do, what we fail to do – we behave our families into that bad place and yes, we should pray. But God expects us to start behaving ourselves out of that place. And that's what we are going to be talking about over the next three weeks. He is going to bless that but we have to do our part. So let me ask you something – do you want to have a godly family because if you do you are going to have to decide; that is what we want, plan it and start living it? We are going to have to decide that some changes have to be made. This easy, comfortable, lazy existence has to change. Discipline is painful; kids don't like it much. It takes strength and perseverance but it pays dividends in their lives and in ours. Let me ask you, how much do you want to have a godly family? And if the answer is, "Yes, I do. I do!", then some tough decisions have to be made. If your family is one with a husband and a wife, then it is up to the both of you. If it is a single parent family then it is up to you alone. But husband and wife have to talk and dream and decide what is important and set priorities and figure out how to do this – what steps to take first, and so on. Mum and dad, you are the leaders and I happen to believe that ultimately, the father is responsible for the spiritual growth and nourishment and development of his family. The buck stops with you, dad! And that's not a sexist thing because I have to tell you, so many women would give their eyeteeth if their husbands would just step up to the plate and take on a leadership role. So many kids would love to have parents who were interested in them, who spend time and efforts setting boundaries, enforcing those boundaries, nurturing them within those boundaries. I have to tell you, as a person, I am a natural isolationist. I like my own company, oft times over the company of others. I really enjoy retreating to my own space after a hard day at the office, so for me, given who I am, getting involved with the family and kids and listening to what happened to them at school and at work – it's not a natural gig, you know? But we have to start somewhere. We can't build a godly family if there is no relationship; if there is no interaction; if we are not involved in planning and making it happen. We are going to talk about some of that over the next few weeks. In fact, I have been speaking to one of the godliest families I know; some friends of mine who live in the USA – mum, dad and their NINE children. They have given me some of their pointers, both the parents and the children. This massive tribe, I have to tell you, they have got their act so well together. I know it's not perfect, but I ask them and I ask the kids, "Tell me what this godly family thing is about." I'm going to talk about that in the next few weeks but right now, we have to decide, each one of us, do we really want to have a godly family? Well, do we? And if we do, what are we going to do about it. Maybe that's something you can pray about and think about and talk about over this next week. We will look at it some more when we get together again at the same time next week, this whole thing of building a godly family. But I have to tell you, when I read about this God who says, "Look, I don't care what has happened in the past. You turn back and you honour Me in your lives, in your family and I tell you what, I won't just bless you, I'll bless your children and I'll bless your children's children and I'll bless their children and the next generation." In fact, the blessing when you break the curses that have been handed down to you, simply by praying and honouring God and turning back to Him, the blessing that flows is a blessing that flows for a thousand generations. That's who God is!

But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”“I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”10 The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. 11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.”13 Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear. 14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”15 But the Lord said to him, “Not so; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.16 So Cain went out from the Lord’s presenceand lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.17 Cain made love to his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch. 18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.19 Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah. 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock. 21 His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments and pipes. 22 Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain’s sister was Naamah.23 Lamech said to his wives,“Adah and Zillah, listen to me;wives of Lamech, hear my words.I have killed a man for wounding me,a young man for injuring me.24 If Cain is avenged seven times,then Lamech seventy-seven times.”25 Adam made love to his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.” 26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh.At that time people began to call on the name of the Lord.
Intro…Welcome to the Cornerstone Baptist church podcast. My name is Justin Wheeler, I am the preaching pastor for Cornerstone and today we are in week 40 of our journey through the Heidelberg Catechism. Today, I will be talking to you about question 105-107.Transition…This week our question deals with the sixth commandment,Deut 5:17 You shall not murder.This is perhaps the most recognized and culturally accepted commandments in all of the decalogue (the ten). Even among the unbelieving, non-Christian people around us, this command is seen as right and just.Nearly every civilization known to us, has had some laws prohibiting the taking of human life and promising punishment to those who did. But that hasn’t kept our world from being filled with murder, nor has it kept murder out of our imaginations. Right here in Dallas, records indicate that the murder rate is on a dramatic rise.In 2018 Dallas, TX recorded 196 homicides. By May of 2019, the city had already recorded 90 homicides[1], which means that before the summer began we were on pace to break a terrible record.But murder is not just a reality in our culture it is also big business in the box office. Horror movies depicting homicidal violence have never been more popular. The highest grossing horror film in 2018 was The Quiet Place taking in $188 million. The entire horror industry took in $901 million in 2018. Almost $1 billion was spent in 2018 by people who wanted to be entertained by violent murder being depicted on screen.[2] This doesn’t take into account the millions made on action, adventure and sci-fi depicting similar violence.What does this mean? For starters, It reveals that we don’t take this command of God very seriously. But it also reveals that at some level deep down, murder is a problem that all of us struggle with.Lord’s Day Focus...Murder has been an issue for humanity since the very beginning. In Genesis 4 we read about the very first sin committed outside the Garden of Eden. Cain and his brother Abel prepared their offerings to the Lord. The Lord received Abel’s offering but not Cain’s and,“So Cain was very angry, and his face fell…8 Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.Just a few verses later in the same chapter (Gen 4), we read the story of a man named Lamech who boasted about his two wives and that he had killed a young man. After the flood, God commissions Noah and his family to being rebuilding human civilization. But this time God gives him a law prohibiting murder from Genesis 9:6, “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image.”Don’t miss the fact that we are 9 chapters into the Bible, and we have already seen murder become so prevalent on the earth that God gave Moses this divine law in order to forbid it. Murder is a serious crime in the eyes of God and it demands a serious punishment.Murder is an assault upon the image of God in man. Human life is not cheap, it is precious to God and when it is taken, God demands justice. Murder is the intentional taking of innocent human life. It is not the same thing as the accidental taking of life, nor is it the same as self-defense, nor does this prohibit just war.The act of murder is a grievous sin and its effects can be seen throughout the Bible and throughout the history of humanity. Murder is a terrible crime, a terrible transgression of God’s law, which demands swift and balancing justice, but murder has a root that goes deeper than the act itself.When Jesus addressed this sin and the commandment prohibiting it, He didn’t deal so much with the act itself but with the heart attitude behind it.Matt 5:21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.Murder is a terrible sin, but anger is the real root of the problem and the root is what the Heidelberg wants to address.Question 105: What is God’s will for you in the sixth commandment?Answer: I am not to belittle, insult, hate, or kill my neighbor – not by my thoughts, my words, my look or gesture, and certainly not by actual deeds – and I am not to be party to this in others; rather, I am to put away all desire for revenge. I am not to harm or recklessly endanger myself either. Prevention of murder is also why government is armed with the sword.How many of us have read the 10 commandments and thought, “Well at least I haven’t committed murder?” Jesus’ audience did the same thing. They looked at the pursuit of righteousness simply in terms of what they had and had not done, but Jesus taught that our behavior is only part of the equation. The key to understanding the deeper purpose of God’s law is to understand what it reveals about our hearts and in our hearts, we commit murder all the time.It is easy to see that anger is what leads to the act of murder, especially if we look at the story of Cain and Abel. But Jesus wants us to know that the anger in our hearts is just as dangerous and deserving of condemnation as the act itself. God cares when we commit sinful acts, but He also cares about the sinful condition of our hearts.So God’s will for us in this commandment is not that we would do everything in our power to avoid the sin of murder, but that we would strive to rid our hearts of the attitudes and emotions that give rise to murder. Heidelberg even talks about the act of harming oneself as murder.Suicide is a terrible thing and often comes about because a person is hurting or has been hurt in a way that is completely overwhelming. But it is still sin. We should grieve when suicide takes place and we should try to comfort those whose loved one has taken their life, but we need to have a category in our mind for what has taken place and suicide is still sin.Question 106: Does this commandment refer only to killing?Answer: By forbidding murder God teaches us that He hates the root of murder: envy, anger, vindictiveness. In God’s sight all such are murder.God hates the root of murder. The heart is desperately wicked and we cannot tame it, but God can. In His mercy and grace, God can and does give new hearts to His people, but He also renews our hearts by His Spirit and His Word.As He works in our hearts, He calls us to turn away from the root of murder and wicked fruit and to embrace the root of love.It is well known that love is at the heart of the message and vision of Christianity. There is perhaps no more popular New Testament verse in the world than John 3:16, where we come to understand that God loves the world and in His love He gave His Son to us so that all who believe in Him will not perish but will have eternal life. The Father’s love for unlovely sinners, like us, is at the very heart of the Christian message.But that is not the end of Christianity’s vision of love. Jesus told his friends that there is no greater love in this world than the love that would cause a man to give his own life in order to save his friends and that is exactly what Jesus did. He died in our place. He took our place and shielded us from the judgment of God and He did this because of His love.But still, this is not the end of Christianity’s vision of love. In the NT gospels, we see Jesus teaching all of His disciples that we are to be people of love. We are to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. We are to love our neighbors as ourselves. We are even commanded to love our enemies and to pray for those who persecute us.Jesus tells us that the world will know that we belong to Him by the way we love one another. The Christian vision of love is incredible and it gives us the idea that God wants love to fill the earth and fuel all of our emotions and actions.Question 107: Is it enough then that we do not kill our neighbor in any such way?Answer: No. By condemning envy, hatred, and anger God tells us to love our neighbors as ourselves, to be patient, peace-loving, gentle, merciful, and friendly to them, to protect them from harm as much as we can, and to do good even to our enemies.To do good to our enemies is uncommon love. This is radical love fueled by a profound understanding of gospel realities. The gospel teaches that despite God’s goodness toward mankind, all of us have rejected Him in our hearts. We suppress the truth about Him and we seek to live as though we belong in God’s place. But, He loved us. Before the foundation of the world, He chose to love us and even while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.We don’t deserve His love and when this truth takes hold of our hearts, it will begin to change the way we view everyone, even our enemies. At the end of the day Jesus is calling us to imitate the love of the Father in how we interact with everyone, from family and friends, to fellow believers, and even to strangers and enemies. He calls us to love, to do good, to lend with no strings attached. God is the standard of how we are to love others, and God’s love is perfect.As followers of Jesus we are called to love not to hate. We are called to love God in a way that resets our heart and enables us to love others in an extraordinary, unnatural and radical way. This sixth commandment is not just a prohibition against a terrible type of sin, it is also a summons to an otherworldly type of love.Thank you for joining me today to learn about the sixth commandment. We understand our emotions because they are instictively connected to who we are, but they lack reason. Matter of fact, our emotions open the door to sin which is actively waiting for an oppurtunity to compromise us, dominate us and cause us to betray the person we call ourselves protecting--overselves. This is the written account of Adam's line. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. … When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth (5:1-3). The second point in the meaning of "in the likeness (Demuth)" and "in his image (tselem)" is that man was created as God's son resembling him in his divine nature. In a sense, Adam was given spiritual DNA from God, which was also handed down to the generations after him. It should be noted, however, that as for the heirs of the world after the Fall of Man, only one child—usually the firstborn son—in each generation was chosen as an heir. After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Adam lived 930 years, and then he died (vv. 4-5). Note the expression, "… had sons and daughters." While many other sons and daughters were born of Adam, Seth is recorded as an heir in the genealogy. However, from chapter 4, we know that Adam had two more sons, Cain and Abel, before Seth. Originally, Cain was the firstborn son who was to be the heir, but Abel was chosen for the following reason: In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast (4:3-5). The reason why Cain's offering was not accepted was because he did not do what was right following the instruction given to him as he brought the offering to the Lord. So the inheritance was removed from him and given to his brother Abel whose offering was accepted because he did what was right. As Cain watched Abel being blessed as an heir, he became so jealous of him that he ended up killing him. Jealousy is the worst kind of sin, and Jesus was also killed because of jealousy. God declared: Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth (vv. 11-12). Here the last sentence indicates that Cain was no longer an heir. So, God, out of his mercy, gave him a sign so that nobody would inflict vengeance on him. In this way, the inheritance was removed from Cain, and given to Abel, but since Abel was killed, it was given to Seth, another son of Adam and Eve. After Seth, it was given to Enosh, and after Enosh, it was given to Kenan, and then to Mahalalrel, and so on. And finally, after Lamech, it was given to Noah. What you need to keep in mind is that the lifespan of these people in this genealogy was somewhere between 700 and 1000 years except that of Enoch, which was only 365 years. The first death, which was the death of Adam, occurred after Methuselah (the 8th generation) was born. If sin had not come into the world, death would not have occurred. And if death had not occurred, the passing on of the inheritance as seen in this genealogy would not have been necessary. The genealogy of God's heirs continues and comes to the generations of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. After Jacob the inheritance was extended to all his sons. In the same way, the inheritance given through Christ is extended to all believers. Therefore, the promise (to be heir of the world) comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham's offspring--not only to those who are of the law but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all (Rom 4:16).

The Evidence of a Generous Person: 1. Compassionate (Proverbs 11:24) One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. (Proverbs 11:25) A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. (Proverbs 22:9) The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor. 2. Extravagant (John 12:3) Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. (Ephesians 5:1-2) Watch what God does, and then you do it, like children who learn proper behavior from their parents. Mostly what God does is love you. Keep company with him and learn a life of love. Observe how Christ loved us. His love was not cautious but extravagant. He didn't love in order to get something from us but to give everything of himself to us. Love like that. 3. Driven by Eternity (Ecclesiastes 3:11) “…He has planted eternity in the human heart”. (1 Timothy 6:17-19) Tell those rich in this world's wealth to quit being so full of themselves and so obsessed with money, which is here today and gone tomorrow. Tell them to go after God, who piles on all the riches we could ever manage—to do good, to be rich in helping others, to be extravagantly generous. If they do that, they'll build a treasury that will last, gaining life that is truly life. (2 Corinthians 6:9) Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.
