Don't Blow Your Interview with the First Question! Instead, Captivate Your Audience from the Start In this episode, I want to convince you to NEVER start an episode with a LAME question again becasue it's killing your podcast. Have you ever used these open-ended fluff-questions like, 'How did you get started?' 'Tell us about yourself' and 'What got you into this?' They're generic, bore our listeners, and leave your guest floundering. These open-ended prompts lead to messy answers and uninteresting narratives. Let me break down all of the reasons to skip generic questions in your podcast interviews: Disrespectful to your listener: Their time is valuable, don't waste it on irrelevant details. Messy for you: Sorting through rambling answers takes effort and detracts from the key points. Lazy and unprofessional: Do your research and ask targeted questions in advance. Undermines your authority: You lose control of the direction and length of the answer. Awkward for your guest: They stumble through generic prompts, hindering their best performance. So, how should podcasters start their interview? Start with a direct question that delivers immediate value to your listener. Grab their attention with the most important information right away. Remember, you're the host, guide the conversation towards what matters most to the listener. Pro Tip: Ask personal history questions during the pre-interview, then use that knowledge to craft insightful interview questions that showcase your expertise and set your guest up for success. And, don't worry - this approach doesn't mean you can't ask the background questions. You can get their origin story or their background later - once the listener actually cares about them because they've gotten valuable information or ideas. By following these tips, you can: Hook your audience and keep them engaged. Show your professionalism and preparation. Guide the conversation towards valuable content. Make your guest feel comfortable and prepared to shine. Ultimately, create a winning podcast interview for everyone involved. Ready to level up your podcast interviews? Tune in for more actionable tips and strategies! Remember, interviewing skills are something to be honed over time. Pay attention to the questions you ask, how you respond, and make sure that you represent your listener every step of the way (the conversation is for them, after all). But most importantly, start strong with an intentional question right out of the gate you know is going to deliver value to your listener. The art of storytelling plays a critical role in engaging and captivating an audience during presentations. A good story has the power to capture attention, foster emotional connections, and render complex ideas more relatable and understandable. However, the effectiveness of storytelling lies in its delivery. Presenters should aim to weave their key messages into a compelling narrative that provides value to the audience. Troy Andrews discusses the importance of storytelling in presentations using the metaphor of the Brooklyn Bridge which he used extensively in his book, Bridges and Barriers. In his view, the bridge represents the journey of taking an audience from one point to another, with the barriers symbolizing the obstacles or concerns that can hinder this process. By leveraging storytelling, Troy suggests that presenters can facilitate this journey more effectively, turning obstacles into opportunities for engagement and interaction. His unique approach to storytelling in the book doesn't follow a linear format, reflecting the idea that confident presenters can break from tradition to create more memorable and impactful presentations. In this episode: Discover the secrets behind creating powerful presentations that captivate and inspire. Decode the crucial role audience analysis plays in delivering meaningful and persuasive speeches. Learn how the strength lies in vulnerability and collaboration to foster trust and uplift your confidence. Understand the impact of strategic storytelling to craft enthralling presentations – even when you're just pitching for more budget next quarter. Learn the value of confidence (and practice) and the role it plays in giving compelling presentations. Show Notes: 00:00:00 - Introduction, Introduction to the podcast episode and the guest, Troy Andrews. He is the author of the book Bridges and Barriers and specializes in applying behavioral science and persuasion theory to presentations. 00:02:23 - Troy's Background and Transition, Troy shares his background in the construction industry and how his experience in communication and project management led him to pursue a career in presentation coaching. He discusses his move to Shanghai, China, in 2008 and his passion for behavioral economics and science. 00:06:15 - Leveraging Presentations for Career Growth, Troy emphasizes the importance of using presentations as an opportunity to shape others' perception of you and advance your career. He suggests focusing on the adjectives or nouns you want to be known for and strategically incorporating them into your presentations. 00:08:31 - The Role of Persuasion in Presentations, Troy highlights the role of persuasion in presentations and the misconception that there is a magic pitch or specific words that guarantee agreement. He discusses the importance of audience analysis and finding common ground to establish rapport and influence others. 00:12:53 - Genuine Connection and Persuasion, Troy shares an example of using audience research to establish a genuine connection with a potential client and how it positively influenced their conversation. He emphasizes the line between persuasion and manipulation and the importance of genuine care and thoughtfulness in establishing rapport. 00:15:06 - Building Relationships and Gaining Influence, Troy shares a story about how Benjamin Franklin won over an opponent by discovering their shared love for rare books. By finding common ground and asking for help, a mentor-mentee relationship was formed, leading to increased trust and support. 00:19:19 - The Art of Woo, Troy recommends "The Art of Woo" (link below) as a book that explores the principles of influence and persuasion. He highlights the importance of understanding influential people within an organization and tailoring presentations to address their concerns. 00:20:51 - Overcoming the Confidence Barrier, Melina and Troy discuss the challenge of confidence in presentations. They emphasize the need for confidence to be backed up by thorough audience analysis and preparation. Practice, understanding the audience's worries, and being well-versed in the content are key to building confidence. 00:24:33 - The Importance of Presentation Structure, Melina shares the importance of structuring presentations with a clear arc and a central message. By guiding the audience through a storytelling journey and incorporating emotional elements, presenters can create impactful and memorable presentations. 00:28:09 - Embracing Failure and Building Real Confidence, Troy promotes the idea of embracing failure and being okay with uncertainty. Real confidence comes from giving your best effort and being resilient, even in the face of potential failures. Building confidence through exposure and experience is key. 00:31:14 - Focusing Illusion in Presentations, The conversation discusses the focusing illusion in presentations, where presenters often fixate on one thing they think the audience is paying attention to (like when they messed up that word), but in reality, the audience may not notice or care about it. Tips are shared on how to avoid getting hung up on minor details and maintain confidence during presentations. 00:32:38 - Overcoming the Fear of Public Speaking, Troy emphasizes the importance of building confidence when it comes to public speaking. Exposure therapy is suggested as a way to gradually overcome the fear. Starting with small actions like asking questions in meetings can help individuals become more comfortable expressing themselves and eventually improve their presentation skills. 00:35:48 - Storytelling and the Brooklyn Bridge, Troy shares how he came up with the idea of using the Brooklyn Bridge as a metaphor for presentations in his book, Bridges and Barriers. He wanted to simplify the concept of carrying the audience across from one point to another and highlight the importance of addressing barriers that may prevent them from accepting the message. The non-linear storytelling approach in the book is discussed. 00:45:48 - Importance of Personal Style and Confidence in Presentations, Melina and Troy discuss the importance of personal style in presentations and how it can help people remember you. It's about being comfortable with your own truth. 00:48:08 - Troy's Top Tip for Better Presentations, Troy recommends a practical practice for improving presentation skills. He suggests recording a 1-minute video of yourself every day for a month, using an app like PowerPoint with an AI coach to track your progress. In this episode of Namaste with Renee, Renee shares one of her favorite things to do to help her clients get clarity on what they want to do within the world.
When it comes to sharing your story, many of us remain silent because we don't want to upset or disappoint anyone associated or we fear putting someone else's business in the streets. Most of our audience are people who know us and we can often spend years walking around with a smile on our faces, without anyone knowing what we experience behind closed doors. What if we learned how to embrace our truth and share our story, while leaving those involved with their dignity? Today, on the Redefining Wealth Podcast, we sat down with CTS Alumni, Sophia Geraldo to discuss how Command The Stage taught her how to tell her story. Sophia Giraldo is a “Confidence Cultivator” passionate about helping women impacted by Abuse & Betrayal redefine beauty, and walk in Confidence as a Lifestyle. Through her speaking and consulting, Sophia offers a glimpse into her journey from a “shame-filled, embarrassed, broken woman”, to one who has encountered Jesus, and His ability to transform her into a woman filled with Confidence. There's a distinct difference between a Kingdom entrepreneur and a Christian entrepreneur. If you're a Christian entrepreneur, you love Jesus, you want to do the right thing and you operate in integrity, but most see purpose as God blessing the works of your hands. On the contrary, Kingdom entrepreneurs operate knowing that everything they have belongs to God, He's the Ceo and you just work for him, therefore, everything you do is his responsibility. Shun Strickland says,“The first principle in the kingdom, that we rarely hear about, is the law of complete surrender.” In this episode, we sat down with Shun to discuss faith, love, and living for the Kingdom of God. Shun Strickland is a Christian, wife, mother, pastor, business strategist, coach and activist. A woman of many hats, Shun is passionate about seeing people, especially women, step into their God given identity and live out their God given dreams. She uses her prophetic insight to help people grow, become and make the SoulShift, transform their mindsets, and break cycles so they can live and walk in freedom. Mark Asquith is a public speaker and the CEO and co-founder of Captivate FM, a podcast hosting, analytics, and monetization platform based out of the UK. He's built several businesses since he started working for himself and with partners in 2005, and some might dub him a serial entrepreneur. Although Captivate FM is a newer podcast hosting option on the market, Mark and some of his colleagues have actually been hosting podcasts on their platform almost since the beginning of the podcast era when they started a tech startup called Poductivity for podcast interaction as well as Podcast Websites, another global success as the No. 1 managed WordPress solution for podcasters. They've made their way up the ranks as podcast hosting platform and were recently ranked in the top ten, among some of the oldest and largest hosting services. In this episode, Mark shares about some of the renovation projects in their new home, how they're currently using a kitchenette that's part of his above-garage office space while redoing their main kitchen. He and Sam are preparing to expand their family soon so found a home that would have enough bedrooms and still allow them to maintain separate offices as their roles in their company are very different. Mark has gone back and forth from working from his home office and a more formal office setting as well as a hybrid for much of his working career, even more recently; but he's currently exploring the pros and cons of keeping his office and podcast studio space versus having his team meet up in other locations as needed for collaboration as they all primarily work remotely for the time being. Mark and Sam have traveled quite a bit, especially right before the pandemic, networking and collaborating with other podcast experts in the States and other places around the globe. He has personally recorded over 1200 podcast episodes and was recording out and about as he traveled, and he talked about some of the gear he has used for years and has access to in his recording studio. He's currently recording a podcast about Star Wars as well as The Podcast Accelerator, where he talks about all things relating to growing and monetizing your podcast. Storytelling in business is a powerful tool to communicate with and captivate your audience, build relationships and trust, and convert your audience to paying clients. Hey friend! Today we are diving into the power of storytelling in business and for building a strong personal brand! My guest is an author, sought-after keynote speaker, and storytelling educator, Gabrielle Dolan. The Concept of Storytelling in Business There is a lot of confusion around storytelling in business and for building a personal brand. People often mistake values and missions on a piece of paper, as the story. However, storytelling in business is about being really clear on your message and attaching a story to that message. Stories can be personal. Moreover, it is important to share a really sharp, on-purpose story to provide the clarity needed for our customers. In addition, your stories have to align with your values and purpose. If you can't achieve this alignment, you won't resonate with your audience. Telling stories that aren't congruent with your values and purpose, will result in inauthenticity. Therefore, the stories you tell must align with what you do, the services, and the products you provide. I hope you find some great storytelling ideas and tactics to implement in your brand marketing strategy to start converting your audience to long-time clients. In coaching, whatever it is that your teaching, your clients understand it, however, they don't know it and you, as a coach, have to make it relatable to them and that is the power of storytelling, making the content relatable. Today, I'm going to show you how to connect stories to different topics or content and I'm also giving you a “ninja hack” on how you can never run out of topic and stories for your content that will make your message seen, heard, and impact more lives. Hillary Rea thinks we can, and even more: we should. She’s the founder of Tell Me A Story, a communication consulting business that teaches the art of storytelling to entrepreneurs, leaders, and anyone that wants to engage and connect with others in a different and more lasting way. If you want to be remembered, use storytelling. Highlights:Storytelling is an art form and a powerful communication tool. Hillary tells us how she discovered and started to practice it.For Hillary, storytelling is a way to captivate your audience, people are more likely to listen to you and understand what you are saying if you tell them a story. And this is a skill that you can learn and improve over the years.Hillary explains part of the elements of a story. Every story has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Once you have this structure, it is time to choose those moments or details that contribute to the story and focus on them. You don’t have to be funny. Hillary knows that not all stories have to end with a joke. Humor has different layers, and it is ok if you want to tell a story and tell how you feel, without being funny. Hillary teaches companies and leaders how to use storytelling to communicate and engage with their teams. Storytelling allows having a connection between coworkers and bosses. We all have stories to tell. Hillary found out that many people didn’t want to tell their story because it didn’t have the perfect ending, and she works to let everyone know that you don’t have to have that perfect ending, or don’t have to meet your goals to have something to tell. You have to find what you want to say.Hillary gives us three reasons why to use storytelling and examples on how to use it. If you want to know more about Hillary and her work, check her website. In this episode of The Hyperfast Agent Podcast, Christina Daves from PR For Anyone, presents at the Hyperfast Sales Summit. With over 1,000 appearances in the media, Christina and her clients have amassed over 1B views and $100M in revenue. Listen to hear how to captivate your audience to cash in on business success. Episode Highlights: Since February, the entire world has changed because of the ongoing global pandemic. Everyone was forced to move online when the world shut down, making it harder to be more visible. Captivating the audience will help agents stand out in the loud world of online marketing. Christina does not have any traditional PR experience, yet has had an incredible amount of success. It all started when Christina won Steve Harvey's Top Inventor competition. SEO from appearing on local and national television has been tremendous for Christina. Find a way to make people stop their scrolling and really examine your content. Most agents make the mistake of having a generic website, stopping them from standing out in the crowd. You only have 1.7 seconds to grab someone's attention, according to a recent lululemon study. If you are too generic, you will not attract the ideal people that you want to work with. Finding your niche will help you as an agent connect to like-minded people. While you can sell to everybody, honing in your message on a certain niche will help you get media attention. Let people know what you can do for them instantly so you can grab their attention in that short window. Once you have figured out your message, you can hire someone to promote it for you. Becoming famous or being featured in an article will help you stand out from all of your competition. There are 3 steps to the process of getting featured in the media. Logos need to be on your website and all of your marketing material so the media exposure will shoot you to the top of the search page. Newsjacking is when you take something from the news and plug it into your real estate content. Become the expert in your industry through the content and value that you provide. Christina shares a plethora of success stories from her own experience and the real estate agents that she works with. Grab the journalist's attention with the hook in your subject line; no one does this better than magazines. Google can be your secret weapon when it comes to finding the right journalist. It only takes 10 minutes per day to make all of this happen. It's going to take a long time for the world to get back to normal, so you better adapt right now. Cindy Ashton and Christina combined forces to create a visibility bundle, the Platinum PR Package, for entrepreneurs to get media exposure. Sharing your story will help you connect to people; it's the most effective form of marketing in today's world. 3 Key Points: Everyone in the country is in a constant state of scrolling when they are on their phone. You have to be able to make them stop. Being newsworthy, creating great hooks, and finding the right journalist will help agents get their spot in the media. What starts with a media connection can see exponential growth when put out on social media. It’s our Anniversary Eve episode! Next week will be our three year anniversary here at Redefining Wealth, which means we are celebrating three years of teaching you that wealth is so much more than money and material possessions. Here in this community, we believe in the original definition of wealth – the condition of well being. In order for us to achieve overall well-being, we first need to acknowledge our current reality and stop suppressing past shame and pain. A man who does this well is Trent Shelton, a father, transformational speaker and former NFL wide receiver. He is the poster child for turning pain into purpose and he is truly living a genuine and authentic life. He says, “it’s time to stop running from reality”. Sharing with us his devastating journey in the NFL, Trent teaches us how to tackle our trials and stop suppression from leading to depression. When we pursue purpose, sometimes our plans are not God’s plans. This is exactly what Trent discovered as God led him away from what he thought was his purpose (football), into what God truly had planned for him (speaking). For this reason, Trent believes “purpose is the wealthiest thing we can have”, and it’s no coincidence that our motto here at Redefining Wealth is to “chase purpose, not money”. Learning this lesson early on changed my life and I invite you to join us as we go further into this conversation and closer to our ideal lifestyle of wealth and well being. I believe Trent Shelton is one of the most prolific inspirational speakers of our time and I can’t wait for you to hear what he shares in today’s episode. This episode is brought to you by Command the Stage, A 2-Day Intimate Training Created for the Next Generation of Transformational Speakers Who Desire to Confidently Communicate the Message they’ve Been Called to Share with the Masses. Running From Reality Takeaways “When I speak I want to make my words matter.” - Trent Shelton “When the purpose is big enough, the struggle or any fear will never be great enough.” - Trent Shelton “I have a purpose greater than the pain I experienced.” - Trent Shelton “Oftentimes, our plans have to fail so God’s purpose in our life can prevail.” - Trent Shelton “Never let people place their impossibilities on your life.” - Trent Shelton “Faith isn’t believing because you see it, it’s believing it because you know God has called you to do it.” - Trent Shelton “Never feel guilty for cutting someone off when they handed you the scissors.” - Trent Shelton “I don’t ever want to be a public success and private failure.” - Patrice Washington “True wealth is not just in your bank account, but it’s also in your talents and your gifts and your wisdom that you leave here.” - Trent Shelton “Purpose is the wealthiest thing we can have.” - Trent Shelton Redefining Wealth Rapid Wisdom Questions And with that, let’s dig into Trent’s responses to our Redefining Wealth Rapid Wisdom Questions. Getting your message across is just as important as the message itself. Learning to be a great public speaker is a skill. We all have blind spots and could become better presenters. Perhaps you have a great message, are passionate about the work, and are making a difference, but your presentation skills could be improved. A poor presentation baffles your audience, diminishes your efforts, and hurts the movement. How you package and deliver your message is as critical as the message itself and people need to receive both you and your message with open arms. Your presentation could be the spark that lights the fire under your audience members. Make it rain with a passionate and clear message delivered by an authentic and confident presenter, or make it trickle leaving the message and your work lost in translation. Listen to Coach Nancy, who provides realistic and achievable ways to become a great public speaker.

As a business owner, what are your first thoughts when you think of interviews? If you're like most business owners, one of the first things you think of when going through the process is finding the best candidate for your opening. You think of yourself interviewing others. However, interviews are a two-way street. Not only is the candidate making an impression on you, but you are also making an impression on the candidate. That first impression will impact whether they later accept a job offer, and what they will tell their network about your company - the good, the bad, and the ugly. In this episode of the Growing Your Team podcast, Liz M. Lopez shares how to make a good first impression from both a candidate's perspective and an interviewer's perspective. She is also sharing with us how to master video interviews so we can make great hiring decisions even when we can't meet with a candidate face-to-face. About Liz M. Lopez: Liz M. Lopez is a valued Career & Business Coach, bestselling author, and celebrated speaker who ignites audiences by showing them their own potential and creating a clear path to accomplishing their true objectives. After an award-winning 15 year corporate career, Liz launched her own company, Captivate Your Audience in 2007. In 2014, Liz co-founded the Keystone Mastermind Alliance with Tracie Thompson, an organization that is breaking barriers in mastermind-based networking for small businesses. Liz has worked with thousands of Professionals, Business Owners, Entrepreneurs, and Corporate Groups to identify goals, set the right mindset, build practical systems, and practice fierce accountability to achieve unprecedented success in careers and business. In this episode, you’ll hear: How Liz helps anyone in a transition (which can be a transition within your own company) become intentional about the moves they are making to grow their careers and businesses. (4:50) Some of the top things you need to worry about when you prepare to be on camera for a video interview outside of what you wear. (8:08) Why video interviews are going to be a popular choice for companies for a long time. (12:08) How the first impression you put off during video interviews as the interviewer can impact the quality of candidates who are willing to say yes to the job. (12:50) More tips for acing video interviews as both an interviewer and an interviewee. (And yes, you need to wear pants!) (16:55) Whether video interviews allow you to learn more or less about a candidate than in-person interviews. (19:04) What has left a negative impression with some of Liz's clients when they have interviewed for a job. For our last episode in Deep Messaging month, I want to talk in-depth about how to craft messaging that compels people to take action. Today we’re talking all about using hooks, which I think is one of the most effective messaging techniques you can use. There are hooks out there that can feel icky or even obnoxious, and you’ve probably come across them before. But when they are crafted with integrity, hooks incite action in your audience and help them quickly understand your brand values and what they have to gain by working with you. In this episode, I talk about what buying behavior is and how I’ve used hooks to communicate my brand values to my ideal clients more effectively than before. We will also cover why hooks, in particular, are so useful for both you and your prospective clients, some of the varieties of hooks I see out there in the online business world, and how you can start working them into your own messaging. You can find complete show notes and resources for this episode at https://scalingdeep.com/messaging-hooks/

THE Presentations Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
How To Captivate Your Audience We can speak to a group and then there is another level, where we try to captivate our audience. What makes the difference. The content could even be the same but in the hands of one person it is dry and delivered in a boring manner. Someone else can take the same basic materials and really bring it to life. We see this with music. The same lyrics, but with a different arrangement and something magical happens. This new version becomes a smash hit. Speeches are similar. A boring rendition is given a make over and suddenly has the audience enthralled. I am sure we would all vote for the enthralling version, so how to do we do that? The quality of the argument we are going to present is important. We definitely need to design two powerful closes, one for the end of the speech and an extra one for after the Q&A. Importantly, we start from this point when designing the talk. We work out what is the most compelling message we want to leave with our audience and we start working backwards structuring the speech from here. Once we know what we what to say, we need to be gathering evidence to back up that assertion. We have to remember that statements are easy to make, but the listener needs convincing. We now do a rough sketch of the key points and the supporting evidence. In a thirty minute speech, there won't be so much time, so we might get through three or four of these key points and that is it. Now we make sure that the evidence is super strong, offering really compelling proof, to build credibility for our argument. Next we work on a blockbuster opening. This has to compete with all the things running through the minds of our audience. The things they were doing before they got to the venue, the things they have to do after this speech. The hand held device is a modern day siren call, diverting their attention away from us, as they check email and social media. We have to smash through all that obstruction and clear a path so that they will hear our message. The first words out of our mouth had better be compelling or we will lose the battle for today's minute attention spans. We need to carefully design what that will be. We want our visuals on screen to be clear and comprehendible within two seconds. If it is taking the viewer longer than that, then they are too dense. Let's keep the colours to an absolute maximum of three. Photos are great with maybe just one word of text added. This intrigues our audience to hear more. We can then talk to the point we want to make. If we use graphs, we should have only one per screen wherever possible. If we are going to use video, it had better be really, really hot and the transition from slide deck to video, back to slide deck has to be seamless. Every five minutes we need to be switching the energy levels right up, to keep our audience going with us. This is key. Classical music has its lulls and crescendos and so should we. Naturally, we have tonal variety right throughout the talk, but we need to be hitting some key messages very hard, around that five minute interval. This needs to be combined with some powerful visuals on screen to drive home the point. This is not delivered by chance, good fortune or accident. We need to plan for this and structure the presentation so that this brings all the vocal and visual elements together at the same time, in a powerful, impressive way. We are meticulously sprinkling stories throughout the speech to highlight the evidence we want to provide for our key points. Data by itself is fundamentally dull, but stories fleshing out the data are so much more scintillating. These should be full of stimulation for forming mental pictures in the minds of our audience. We sketch out physical locations, describe colours, talk about the season, mix in people they may know, explain the why of what is in the story. In this way we want our listeners to see the scene in their own mind as we explain the point of the story. It is a bit like reading a novel, after having seen the movie. As you read it, you can mentally imagine the scenes you saw previously on screen. This is the effect we are going for. Our final close after the Q&A has to go out with a bang and not a whimper. We want a strong call to action. The final vocal delivery must finish on a rising upswing. Don't let that very last sentence peter out at the end. Remember, we want to muster the audience to our cause. We want them to leave dyed in the wool supporters. We want them getting a tattoo with our name on it. Okay, I was getting a bit carried away there. That is probably too much, but you get the idea. We need great structure, evidence, visuals, stories, pacing, energy, passion and belief in our presentation. The delivery is going to rock because we make it rock through rehearsal after rehearsal, until we have refined the whole thing into a symphonic triumph. That is how we need to be thinking to captivate our audience when we start constructing the talk. Begin with captivation in mind. Engaged employees are self-motivated. The self-motivated are inspired. Inspired staff grow your business but are you inspiring them? We teach leaders and organisations how to inspire their people. Want to know how we do that? Today’s show is layered with a small dose of funny. My guest is David Nihill, the author of Do You Talk Funny? 7 Comedy Habits to Become a Better (and Funnier) Public Speaker. When I originally asked David to be on the show he replied saying he didn’t have any business failures to share, but thanks. I didn’t agree with that because he took on comedy to overcome his fear of public speaking. He couldn’t stand in front of a room and talk. That’s a problem many people, possibly you, face. So I hit him over the head and dragged him into the cave to share his story. What he teaches will help entrepreneurs, CEOs, managers, sales people, coaching calls, and more. Humor makes everything easier. And David makes humor easy. Here’s what David and I discuss: Why David’s friends called him “Shakin Stevens.” How he fell apart the first time speaking. How fear of public speaking can hold you back at work and other areas of your life. Why David still hates being on camera, and what he’s given up because of this fear. Why he chose stand-up comedy, of all things, to face his public speaking fear. Why he said comedians are the true masters of public speaking. What you can learn from comedians to present better and make more sales. Why stories drive the best comedy, and the best business presentations. How David uses stories with traditional comedy techniques to build his routine. What he took from comedy to apply in business. What you can do to hone the funny parts in your presentations so you don’t have to master the stand-up comedy circuit. Why comedians always watch what they did to get feedback and improve. Why “winging it” is the worst thing you can do when presenting. The two parts of your presentation that you must completely control to be a true master. What “calling the room” means and how you can use it for maximum impact in your presentations. The structure of a joke, and how to use it in your presentations and stories. Why you’re being judged from the first minute of your presentation, and how to start strong. Why he feels slightly guilty for Donald Trump becoming who he is today, because of David’s mother. How to create a “memory palace” to help you remember your stories. The one thing most people can do to feel relaxed and calm before any presentation. Why David hates most public speaking books. How David tested his ideas before writing his book to see if there was a market for it. How comedy improves your ability to write stories. Why practice is so critical. Why he started comedy under the anonymous name of “Irish Dave.” What David does that helps him tweak his creative efforts. Enjoy the show.
