Go read it!) Over on Strong Songs, Kirk recently dove headfirst into Nicholas Britell's excellent Andor score. Today, he's joining us to talk through music's place in the show and in Star Wars in general. Join us as we unpack the differences between Britell, John Williams, and the other musicians who've worked in the franchise. Turns out there are lots of great conversation starters in minutes 61-65 of Solo: A Star Wars Story! Discussion Guide: 00:00 - Hello there! 03:56 - Listening to the beginning of the minutes. 09:43 - Do various Solo themes all kinda sound the same? 17:36 - Harry Potter + Nightmare Before Christmas vibes when they're walking up to the Millennium Falcon. 24:43 - Listening to the Millennium Falcon reveal moment. 25:38 - Luke's theme (the Star Wars Main Theme), John Powell's internal logic in using it, reminiscence therapy. 31:50 - Pop chords, The Rise of Skywalker trailer. 38:12 - The Solo trailer. 41:26 - Anthemic Main Theme. Luke and Leia reunite, and their musical themes pull at our heartstrings. Camila, also known as BoricuaWookiee, is here with me to navigate through these emotional minutes (126-130) of The Last Jedi. Discussion topics/Highlights: Is Finn's impending sacrifice selfish? Thoughts on his role and actions in the Resistance. Dies Irae when Finn is about to sacrifice himself. Leia's uncharacteristic loss of hope, which only Luke can reignite. The smooth progression of themes, from Force --> Luke & Leia --> Han & Leia The melodic and harmonic connections between all of Leia's three themes. Is the beginning of the Star Wars Main Theme outlined at the beginning of Luke & Leia's theme? (Both begin with a perfect 4th to perfect 5th) Does Leia know that Luke is a Force projection? How our Star Wars feelings/opinions are constantly adjusting based on new information and more conversations. "Luke & Leia" reminiscent of "Make Our Garden Grow" from Leonard Bernstein's Candide (operetta). Rose as a future Resistance leader. Leia, the bedrock of Star Wars. The rock of the Rebellion. The rock of the Skywalker family. The repetitive F minor chord that makes us feel like we're waiting for something to happen. Themes Referenced (in order of appearance): 13) Dies Irae 55a. Rose (A Section) in Db 3. Force in Em 21. Luke & Leia in E 11a. Literally, this is now our worst rated film of all time, and it’s not even close. The entire production was a fiasco of epic proportions, and that’s before Rex Harrison’s complete and utter lack of energy in the role. Seriously, there’s nearly two hours of movie before anything of consequence happens in this movie, and even then it’s still pretty awful. And the only reason it’s on our list is that it got nominated for 9 Academy Awards. Introducing GALACTIC EMPIRE.  The band performs classic pieces from the iconic soundtrack of the Star Wars films written by John Williams.  Dark Vader (guitar) had the following to say: "These instruments are crude but should be adequate to shred some faces as we journey across the galaxy. We have been doubling our efforts to complete our debut full-length album in time for the Emperor's arrival. If you are not part of the Rebel Alliance or a traitor, buy our single on iTunes and prepare to succumb to the Dark Side upon our album’s release." Grandios. Sensationell. Episch. Einfach Star Wars. Chewie, now we're home!
