On May 9, 1959, Los Angeles Sheriff Deputies forcefully removed and arrested Aurora Vargas, daughter of Abrana and Manuel Aréchiga. The City of Los Angeles displaced the Aréchiga’s and the communities of Palo Verde, La Loma, and Bishop to build a new stadium for the Dodgers. The Dodgers had just arrived in LA from Brooklyn in 1958. The 62nd anniversary of this event was this past Sunday, May 9, 2021.   So, for today’s episode, I am honored to be joined on the podcast by writer and former VICE editor Eric Nusbaum (@ericnus). In his book, STEALING HOME: Los Angeles, the Dodgers, and the Lives Caught in Between, Eric did a fantastic job recounting the displacement of Palo Verde, La Loma, and Bishop to build Dodger Stadium. Eric rightfully centered the story on the Aréchiga’s but connected several other stories as well. For example, Eric tells me about the LA Housing Authority official, Frank Wilkinson. Mr. Wilkinson hand-picked Palo Verde, La Loma, and Bishop as the new site (without asking the residents) for the city’s ambitious public housing project. Eric also explained how red scare politics derailed the project and Wilkinson’s life and career. Eric also detailed how Walter O’Malley’s Dodgers ended up in Los Angeles and gives us a little history of the LA baseball scene before the team’s arrival. As a Xicano who grew up a Dodger fan, we should never forget what happened to the three communities.  “Dodger Stadium should not exist!” -Frank Wilkinson"Stealing Home has a driving plot, a humane heart, and a proud conscience. Most importantly, read it.”     —Chuck D, Founding member of Public Enemy For more information, please visit www.buriedundertheblue.com. Eric Nusbaum published a compelling first book last Spring, "Stealing Home; Los Angeles, the Dodgers and the Lives Caught in Between"---the story how Los Angeles condemned and violently evicted families in three Mexican-American neighborhoods to give to the Dodgers. This week, Nusbaum joins us to talk about his wonderful book and how clearly this almost forgotten story from L.A.'s past resonates in these times. Do not sleep on this book!In Chapter Two, another week in baseball  with the up-and-down Astros showing signs of life following their COVID-related slump. The Astros top-5 prospects have been assigned to Minor League teams as that season finally begins this week. Eric and Craig take a deep dive into the baseball-wide hitting slump that has driven batting averages below and strikeout rates above the 1968 season---heretofore the standard for offensive futility. Only Mike Trout and a few others so far seem immune to the pitchers' wiles. The chapter ends with Eric and Craig riffing on a recent Cubs/Braves blowout that saw the Cubs bring in three position players to pitch. The duo also looked at Jay Jaffee's "Position Players are Suddenly -- and Probably Fleetingly -- Decent at Pitching," (Fangraphs, April 30) to discuss trends in this strange but at times highly entertaining baseball phenomenon (do you ever see linebackers come in to take snaps under center in blowouts)? In Chapter Three, Eric and Craig take on George Varga's article in the San Diego Union Tribune that asks if we really need more octogenarian rock stars? The article is "Bob Dylan and Charlie Watts Will Soon Turn 80. More Music Legends are Rocking Out Past Retirement Age," published April 25.

Eric Nusbaum is the author of the award-winning book, "Stealing Home: Los Angeles, the Dodgers, and the Lives Caught in Between." Dodger Stadium is an American icon. But the story of how it came to be goes far beyond baseball. The hills that cradle the stadium were once home to three vibrant Mexican American communities. In the early 1950s, those communities were condemned to make way for a utopian public housing project. Then, in a remarkable turn, public housing in the city was defeated amidst a Red Scare conspiracy.Instead of getting their homes back, the remaining residents saw the city sell their land to Walter O’Malley, the owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Now LA would be getting a different sort of utopian fantasy — a glittering, ultra-modern stadium. But before Dodger Stadium could be built, the city would have to face down the neighborhood’s families — including one, the Aréchigas, who refused to yield their home. The ensuing confrontation captivated the nation – and the divisive outcome still echoes through Los Angeles today. In this episode of the podcast, Nusbaum discusses the history of Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, and the lives and communities its construction disrupted.

In this conversation, Nusbaum explains how the construction of Dodger Stadium in the late 1950s somehow encompassed the entirety of Los Angeles’ political, economic, and cultural history, and offers an opportunity to reflect on the intersection of sports culture, housing rights, radical politics, and popular democracy.

Almost without hesitation, we give our 11-minute tangent about Spotify Wrapped and people's obsessions with it. Oy vey. Now onto today's episode: We scrutinize the thought process behind and reaction to "Music," a vanity project by the musician Sia. This film (based on the trailer) about a young woman with autism on the outset feels rather stereotypical and quite tropey. Sia also pulled a Hollywood and did not cast an actress who has autism, and her retorts on Twitter to autistic actors is appalling. Her response to criticism is so Trumpian that it sours what is potentially one of the last film trailers, in a year with so few films, in an otherwise detestable year. Elliot Page came out as trans/non-binary. We express our deepest happiness and support for him, and condemn crusading attempts by misguided men and women about what is "masculine." Finally, Ryan gives his latest book recommendation: "Stealing Home: Los Angeles, the Dodgers, and the Lives Caught in Between," Eric Nusbaum's account about the various gatekeepers and everyday people left at the mercy of the times, politics and racial economic inequality in mid-20th century LA. Notable individuals like Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, Norman Chandler, Councilmembers Edward Roybal and Rosalind Wyman, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, and countless others intersect with the lives of men and women like Abrana Aréchiga and Frank Wilkinson who fought back against an already overflowing city. Eric Nusbaum, author of the recently published Stealing Home: Los Angeles, the Dodgers, and the Lives Caught in Between, joins the show to share about researching and writing this book and his personal fandom of the Dodgers. The book focuses on the story of the Aréchiga family, who were forced out of their home and off their property by the city, like many other families living in the Mexican-American neighborhood of Palo Verde, to clear the area for Dodger Stadium to be built. Besides the central narrative of the displacement of a multigenerational family, this book is also about the fight for public housing, the red scare and a large American city grasping for continued relevance through Major League Baseball. Stealing Home is filled with a richness in detail that defines each character and their background, as well as beautiful sketches by Adam Villacin of the people and places we are learning about. Thank you to Eric for writing a book that represents a specific time and a place but very much speaks to systemic issues and injustices that continue to this day.
