As US-China relations strain under rising economic rivalry, political divergence, and competing global visions, trust has become more elusive and essential. In this episode, Yale scholar Feng Zhang explores how trust between these two superpowers has frayed—not only through policy missteps and trade tensions, but also through fundamentally different understandings of global order. From Confucian relational thinking to China's Global Civilization Initiative, Zhang offers a rare, nuanced perspective on how trust might be rebuilt—even amid deep ideological divides and historical grievances. He reflects on missed diplomatic opportunities, the fading promise of cooperation post-Sunnylands, and whether China's ambitions can ever align with Western expectations of global leadership.

This is an emergency podcast about the Sunnylands Statement on Enhancing Cooperation to Address the Climate Crisis, which was released just a day ago. Top US and China climate negotiators Xie Zhenhua and John Kerry have held several days of talks at the Sunnylands estate near Palm Springs in California, and released this joint US-China statement in the lead-up to COP28 in Dubai. Just a few months ago, Kerry had visited BJ to negotiate similar topics, and President Xi had used the occasion to emphasize that China would set its own path on climate, and not give in to pressure. So this joint statement comes as a bit of a positive surprise. Topics we discuss: The top highlights of the announcement, especially economy-wide emissions cuts and addressing all GHGs. The meaning of "meaningful post-peak reductions in power sector emissions." The importance of the phrasing around tripling renewable capacity. What this means (or doesn't mean) for global stock taking. How the issue of trade policy will play at the COP. China's potential contribution to loss and damage funds. I also recently just started in September a new internship position at an historic estate called Sunnlyands (located in Rancho Mirage, right in the Coachella Valley). I'll be sharing information about this beautiful place with so much historic information to share with you and others around the world. I recommend everyone to go, especially if your a local and it's right in your backyard. Lastly, I wrap up the episode touching on Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept.15-Oct.15) how I got asked by a good friend of mine to do speaking zoom engagement for Desert Hot Springs Elementary School and their families. We are delighted to be speaking to Heather Mason today. Heather has tons of energy and lots of great ideas. She created her company, Caspian Agency, in 2005, and today, she is a rockstar, planning all the meetings and events for some of the world's major foundations.  In this episode, Heather talks to us about how our industry needs revolution, not evolution, and that women need to learn the mantra, “men, money, and materials.” We hope you enjoy our amazing conversation with Heather Mason today! Heather Mason's bio Heather Mason founded Caspian in 2005 to produce conferences for the innovative and social good business space. Caspian's social enterprise clients include the Skoll Foundation, the Omidyar Network, New America, Code for America, Rockefeller Foundation, Endeavor Global, Impact 2030, The Philanthropy Workshop, and Sunnylands. Caspian has also worked with brands including HarperCollins, Vanity Fair, and Keurig Green Mountain Coffee. Caspian has had the distinction of producing the Skoll World Forum for the past 15 years.  Heather also created the Caspian 10 Essentials methodology as a system to ensure business goals could be mapped and met through live events. The Caspian 10 Essentials is offered as a training program for in-house event teams and clients include Oxford University, Swansea University, and Cheung Kung Institute of Business in London. Recently, Caspian partnered with Cvent, the largest event software provider in the world, to provide the Caspian 10 Essentials via a webinar series. The online Essentials were featured as course material for the San Diego State University Meetings and Events Masters course. Mason is also the instructor for the Masters Meetings Financials and Economics Course. Heather's previous work experience includes Fox Studios, Fox TV, the Sundance and Cannes Film Festivals, the Bud Greenspan Olympic film crew, as well as a marketing career in technology including ShowBIZ data, Broadstream and UltraDNS. Prior to starting Caspian, she worked at Charles Schwab, producing conferences across the country.  She graduated with a degree from Utah State University, where she was awarded Woman of the Year award and the President's Leadership scholarship.  She is a strategic advisor to the Women Founders Foundation and serves on the boards of Social Venture Circle (SVC), American Sustainable Business Council (ASBC), Utah State University Alumni and on the Advisory Board for Women Founders Network (WFN.)  She has been a keynote speaker at the Western Regional MPI Conference in Las Vegas, featured speaker at Future of Cities LA, Cvent Connect Conference, Women Founders Network, Talk Forum NYC, HSMAI, LA AiP (International Association of Advisors in Philanthropy) and the Global Women's Leadership Summit. She is an instructor for the PCMA Digital Event Strategist certificate program. Heather has been featured in Southwest Airlines, Collaborate, and Successful Meetings magazines. Mason has been named a 2020 Changemaker by MeetingsNet, a 2018 Top 500 Most Influential Event Professional by BizBash, and her event SUREFIRE was named one of the top 15 most Innovative Events of 2018 by BizBash Magazine. The film bug When she was in school, back in 1993, Heather found out about the Sundance Film Festival, and she got bitten by the film bug. She wanted to go and produce movies and thought it would be easy, so she went to Hollywood. She worked at the Fox 2000 studio, and after that, she worked for Fox TV. The internet After leaving Fox TV, she went to work as the head of marketing for two different internet companies. That took her away from Los Angeles to the Bay Area.  Producing events A friend told her that producing events is a lot like producing movies. She had no job at the time, so she decided to give it a try, and ended up working as an event manager for the next three years. That was when she learned to use a third-party agency to augment her team, and she did events all around the country. She then learned how to do what a third-party agency does. Save the world Heather wanted to save the world, so she decided that if she was going to start her own company, she only wanted to work with people who were saving the world.  Caspian So she quit her job, and with just $1400 in the bank, she started the Caspian Agency. Quora Heather became part of a civic learning platform for high school and college students, called Quora. For a brief time, they had a learning program to teach professionals how their city works, how they could engage in the democratic process, and how to become a more active citizen.  Skoll Foundation Through the program, Heather met someone who worked at the Skoll Foundation. She was looking for an event manager to do one event. The Skoll Foundation then became her client for the next fifteen years. If you want to have faith and believe in the world If you want to have and believe in the world, Heather suggests that you look at what the Skoll Foundation does. Go to www.skoll.org to read all about them. The foundation funds, connects, and celebrates social entrepreneurs. They look for those social entrepreneurs who are using business to change the world for good.  Heather Mason's social entrepreneurship Heather Mason had never before heard of social entrepreneurship, and when she learned about it, she thought it was cool! After getting the Skoll Foundation as her client, she started getting to know all the different organizations in that world, and from there, she got many referrals. She found that once she started working in that group of foundations, things began to build on themselves because she learned all the different initiatives and knew the language. Revolution, not evolution Heather thinks that the revolution is here if we want it. She thinks this time of chaos and disruption is a lot like what was happening back in the dot-com days. During any time of disruption, things tend to rise like a phoenix from the flame. They can get better because the disruption allows for the deconstruction of the systems and models that we had accepted were written in stone, that we see are just written in the matrix. Recreating the industry in a better way People in organizations don't know what to do currently. Those event producers who are not afraid of authority, responsibility, failure, or experimenting can own the industry and recreate it in a better way. Project managers Project managers are traditionally able to usurp the formal order chart when they are in charge of a worldwide project. Heather feels that event producers should be the same way.  The massive opportunity that Heather Mason sees Heather Mason sees that there is a massive opportunity now to revolutionize the industry. There is no option right now for people to stay at the same level and do logistics because that will trend downward into commoditization. Men, money, and materials  Heather feels that women need to learn the mantra, “men, money, and materials”. She explains that the women she works with are afraid to take on any more responsibility because they think they will have to do everything themselves. In the military, however, when an order gets given, the person always says “yes” no matter what the job is, and then they will ask for the men, money, and materials to accomplish the job.  Having authority When you have authority, you do not have to know how to build the bridge. You need to know how to direct people to build the bridge, and you need the men, money, and materials to do it. Fears Heather had lots of fears and made a lot of mistakes along the way. Now that she's on the other side of pushing back, however, she sees that her fears were nothing more than the matrix talking to her and telling her stories that were not true. A life of hesitancy A life of hesitancy has a lot of sacrifices to it. A life of fear has sacrifices in it. Heather would rather have the sacrifice that the risky life and the bold life offer. Five people Five different people changed Heather's life when she was fifteen. They helped her transform from being a hesitant, shy, frightened, introverted girl into someone who could see that a life of boldness had fewer sacrifices.   Among them were a walking coach, a presentation coach, her history teacher, and a dance teacher.  Surefire Heather thinks we all have a responsibility to pass on and pay forward what people have done for us.   Surefire is a collective impact model meant to go in any major metropolitan area. They get 20 girls from different schools to be ambassadors. They have to supply topics that girls want to talk about the most. They then go into the community and find all the organizations that serve girls and youth, and have a one-day conference and a community village where all the organizations get set up around the main stage to help the girls.   The future of conferences  The future of conferences for the organizations Heather works for means expanding the idea of having global audiences. Let the People Rule tells the story of the four-month campaign that changed American politics forever. In 1912 Theodore Roosevelt (TR) came out of retirement to challenge his close friend and handpicked successor, William Howard Taft, for the Republican Party nomination. To overcome the power of the incumbent, TR seized on the idea of presidential primaries, telling bosses everywhere to “Let the People Rule.”The cheers and jeers of rowdy supporters and detractors echo from Geoffrey Cowan’s pages as he explores TR’s fight-to-the-finish battle to win popular support. After sweeping nine out of thirteen primaries, he felt entitled to the nomination. But the party bosses proved too powerful, leading Roosevelt to walk out of the convention and create a new political party of his own.Using a trove of newly discovered documents, Geoffrey Cowan takes readers inside the colorful, dramatic, and often mean-spirited campaign, describing the political machinations and intrigue and painting indelible portraits of its larger-than-life characters. But Cowan also exposes the more unsavory parts of TR’s campaign: seamy backroom deals, bribes made in TR’s name during the Republican Convention, and then the shocking political calculation that led TR to ban any black delegates from the Deep South from his new “Bull Moose Party.”Geoffrey Cowan, president of the Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands and the Annenberg Family Chair in Communication Leadership at the University of Southern California, is the best-selling author of The People v. Clarence Darrow. Some US media say the FTAAP is just a way for China to tussle with the US over influence in the region and to compete for billions of dollars in trade. The Wall Street Journal says the US will attempt to block efforts by China to begin negotiations on the FTAAP during APEC. However, the Chinese side is more positive on the long expected meeting. Chinese Ambassador to the US Cui Tiankai says the two countries have been coordinating the issue for quite some time and both understand each other's position. "I think China and US have found a feasible way to expand common interests and promote regional cooperation on APEC. I don't think that the two sides will have a major problem to that issue during the APEC meetings." The ambassador added that it was actually the US that initiated the idea of launching the FTAAP within the APEC framework, not China, but unfortunately many forget that now. According to Cui, there are signs of trade protectionism in the Asia-Pacific region, which is harmful to multilateral trade and economic integration in the region. "As we are hosting the event, we should take the opportunity to push forward the process of the FTA in the Asia-Pacific region. And this is in favor of all nations in the region, this is our common demand. And the real intention for China to do it is to avoid trade barriers in the region, and this is a good example of the continuity of the APEC mechanism." According to Cui, China has high expectations for the APEC meetings as well as the bilateral meeting with the US. In addition to formal meetings, the two countries' leaders will also have a chance to have a more intimate and in-depth dialogue, similar to their meeting at Sunnylands but featuring Chinese elements this time. He believes this will leave a clear, positive and firm foot print on the history of Sino-US relations. For CRI, I'm He Fei in Washington.

中国驻美国大使崔天凯当地时间4月10日出席由美国和平研究所、中国现代国际关系研究院与复旦大学合作举办的“第六届中美危机规避与合作对话”开幕式,并就中美新型大国关系发表主旨演讲。 On April 10, 2014, Ambassador Cui Tiankai participated in the opening ceremony of the 6th China-US Project on Crisis Avoidance and Cooperation (PCAC), co-hosted by the United States Institute of Peace, China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, and the Fudan University, and delivered a keynote speech on the new model of major country relationship between China and the US. Ambassador Cui said, the key to our success in avoiding crisis is to turn dangers into opportunities for cooperation. We are witnessing fast and profound changes in the world, with foreseeable and unforeseeable challenges almost everyday. No country can confront all these challenges single-handedly. But if members of the international community could have the vision, wisdom, determination and will to work together, we will be able to seize the opportunities and make a better world for all. Ambassador Cui said, this is the big picture against which our leaders set the goal for China and the US to work together to build a new model of major country relationship. President Xi Jinping and President Obama made that decision at Sunnylands last June, and reaffirmed it in their subsequent communications. There is clarity in the vision of our two presidents and consistency in their commitment to the goal. Guided by the consensus of the two presidents, and thanks to joint efforts by both sides, China-US relations are moving forward in a steady way despite issues and problems every now and then. It's becoming increasingly evident that that this new model of major country relationship between China and the US is the right choice. That said, there still exist misunderstandings and misperceptions. Some may question the intentions behind the concept. Others may have doubt about its real effect. Still others may believe that it is not attainable. Ambassador Cui said, there is such interdependence and connectivity in today's world, that relations among countries in particular among major countries are no longer a zero-sum game. And 19th century solutions can no longer work to solve 21st century problems. Likewise, Cold War legacies, either mental or material, are stumbling blocks, rather than building blocks, if our goal is to build a 21st century world order. So new realities call for new ways for countries to interact with each other and build new models of relationship. Ambassador Cui emphasized, the new model of relations stresses mutual respect. China and the US have very different historical heritage, cultural traditions, political and social systems and are at different stages of economic development. We have to understand and respect them. Mutual respect also means respecting each other's core interests and major concerns. Mutual respect of such interests is the very prerequisite for any meaningful cooperation. Disregard of it would only lead to conflict and confrontation. Such respect is not a favor given by one side to the other. It is a reciprocal process and two-way street. Positive approach will have positive response. Negative attitude will probably get a negative reward. So you reap what you sow. Ambassador Cui said, the new model of relationship is a framework for cooperation. China and the US are already cooperating in so many areas, including international and regional security issues, non-proliferation, counter-terrorism, Korean Peninsula, the Iranian nuclear issue, global economic governance, climate change, cross-border crime, disease control, and infrastructure building. All these will have a clearer sense of direction, greater incentives and closer coordination and introduce even more tangible results for our two peoples. Ambassador Cui said, both sides have to be frank and direct in discussing differences, and constructive and pragmatic in managing them, we should make ensure the differences do not disrupt the overall relationship. We should always keep in mind that our common interests far outweigh the differences. And our closer and growing cooperation in areas where we can work together will enable us to handle and mange the areas where we differ. We have to be careful that we do not lose sight of the big picture, and do not give anyone the illusion that they could take advantage of and manipulate our differences. Ambassador Cui said, the new model of major country relationship aims at win-win outcome. Naturally, it is a win-win outcome first of all for our two countries. But our bilateral cooperation clearly benefits others as well. This year marks the 35th anniversary of establishing the diplomatic relations between China the US. The development of our bilateral relations has made significant contribution to the stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific and the world at large. The new model of major country relationship is not G2. It represents our best efforts to respond to the transformation that is taking place in the world. The new model of relationship will also contribute to the process of building a more balanced international structure. Ambassador Cui said, what we have achieved in building the new model of major country relationship is truly encouraging. But the journey is not complete. China remains fully committed to this new model of major country relationship, and I hope our US partners will be equally confident.

Read the full story with photos at: https://www.otsuka.co.jp/en/company/globalnews/2013/0607_02.html On June 7 and 8, 2013, at the Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands, in Rancho Mirage, California, American President Barack Obama held a bilateral meeting, followed by a working dinner, with President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China. Ridge Vineyards 2008 Geyserville Zinfandel was served with the main course – the Porterhouse steak. Dinner diplomacy of course requires world-class cuisine, but the culinary merit of each menu item is not the sole consideration; each dish has political significance. Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord, a French diplomat at the time of the Napoleonic Wars, emerged victorious from the negotiations at the Congress of Vienna due in no small part to the wines of Chateau Haut-Brion and the grand cuisine of legendary chef Marie-Antoine Carême. There is no question that Ridge Vineyards 2008 Geyserville was carefully chosen as a representation of America's influence. China has experienced rapid and continuous economic growth, and has passed Japan to become the world's second-largest economy, after America. China is becoming a leader in both the importation and production of wine as well. It is significant that the red wine served to China's leaders was a Zinfandel-based blend. There are many American wines that are more expensive than Geyserville, such as Cabernets from Napa. A Zinfandel was likely chosen because it is a distinctly "American" variety, one that symbolizes an America that has become the world's dominant power and that has carved out its own unique position in the world, while still retaining its connections to the culture and traditions of Europe. Ridge Vineyards was acquired by Otsuka Pharmaceuticals in 1986 and is honored that, out of all the Zinfandels available, Ridge Vineyards 2008 Geyserville was chosen to represent America at this dinner. Celebrity chef Bobby Flay, the owner and executive chef of several restaurants, including Mesa Grill, was chosen to represent America in the preparation of the meal itself.
