The wake-up call came a few years ago when the Wall Street Journal ranked energy at 10 out of 11 fields in a survey on diversity in businesses. Since then, Smart Energy Decisions has worked to raise the profile of this issue with its series “Inspiring Diversity in Energy.” This edition features a discussion with Telisa Toliver, General Manager of Renewable Power for Chevron and Debra Chanil, SED's Director of Research and Content. Telisa has almost 30 years of experience in the energy industry and has first-hand knowledge about the improvements necessary to move the industry to the next level. Listen as Telisa shares her insight into inspiring diversity in energy. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Telisa's experience in the energy industry [3:18] The internship that started Telisa's career [5:13] The value of mentorship [8:26] Diversity in the energy field outside the US [10:00] The creative aspect of oil and gas [14:38] Telisa's involvement with AABE (American Association of Blacks in Energy) [16:13] What is diversity? While the concept of diversity is evolving, it is often viewed in the U.S from a legal perspective. However, since oil and gas are global industries, the definition has to go beyond country borders. Diversity and inclusion must be considered aside from regulations and become an integral part of a company's culture. For example, while a company could be considered diverse simply because half of its employees are outside of the U.S., it may still have a limited representation of women in leadership. In the U.S., women and minorities often aren't well represented in the pipeline or on boards. For companies to improve diversity on a cultural level, a strategic approach is imperative. Breaking through cultural barriers doesn't happen accidentally. Rather, a focus on action is the key to a better, more inclusive work environment. Relationships are key to diversity Telisa expresses the importance of trust and relationships to those she mentors. She explains that some of those relationships happen organically while others have to be intentionally cultivated. Leaders can set an example for employees to seek relationships by working in a way that values mentorship. People will feel like they're worth being invested in and will prosper. This uplifting level of connection is vital to maintain continued growth throughout one's career. The process for building these relationships is ongoing. From the start of an employee's career to the end, leaders should encourage their employees to reach out to others in the company so they both can benefit from each other's experiences. Without that personal connection to a company's culture, employees will feel isolated. However, employees with internal role models will feel empowered and supported. What support is there to improve diversity in the workplace? Telisa has been part of the American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE) for ten years and is currently the chairman of the board. AABE's mission is to provide direct input into the deliberations and developments of energy policies, regulations, emerging technologies, and environmental issues. Telisa explains how the focus of the organization has been shifting more toward leadership because minorities often don't have the same access to those positions. AABE encourages leadership growth among minorities through scholarships to students and ongoing support for equity. Racial equity is a business imperative that is often mistakenly thought of as a short-term solution, but it's a long-term play. Diversification will result in life-long benefits to the industry because it results in employees who feel valued. Instilling the heart of valuing people doesn't happen without effort. Leadership and courage are required in diversity discussions and will ultimately make the difference in the energy industry from what it is to what it can be: an inclusive environment that supports the livelihoods of its people worldwide. Welcome to today's show which is jointly presented by Doing Diaspora, a YouTube interview series by The Networking Institute, and The Migration & Diaspora Podcast, a podcast hosted by me, Loksan Harley, where we discuss all things migration. Today I was delighted to interview Dr Martin Russell. Martin completed his PhD on Diaspora Strategies & Conflict Transformation at the Clinton Institute (University College Dublin) where his work focused on diaspora networks, media, philanthropy and politics. He was also a visiting fellow at UNU-MERIT and is currently an advisor with The Networking Institute which provides teaching, training, and consultancy on networking, philanthropy and fundraising, public speaking, and diaspora engagement. Martin sits on the Executive Leadership Council of the Silicon Valley-based African Diaspora Network and the Advisory Board of Ireland Reaching Out. His vision and passion for the next few years is to establish Ireland as the global centre of excellence in the teaching, training and researching of diaspora engagement. He is quietly confident Ireland will get there! Outside work, you are most likely to find him in London supporting his favourite football team, Tottenham Hotspur, or having a beer with friends trying to get over the disappointment of said football team! I really enjoyed my chat with Martin. He is one of the few visionaries I've come across in the migration and diaspora field. In our conversation, we touch on some of the definitional issues of diaspora engagement, its intersections with philanthropy and networking, and some lessons learned from his work and our work together (especially with respect to governments). We also talk about how Ireland has been so successful in making so many people around the world "feel Irish" and engage with the country in so many impactful ways. I've been working with Martin a lot lately and often refer to him as Mr Diaspora, although, as you'll hear from this interview, his work connects to some much bigger themes. Unfortunately podcasts don't come with subtitles so I wish you luck in understanding his wonderful Irish accent. Without further ado, here is our interview. We hope you enjoy listening. Spoken word is many things to many people...ranging from life itself to a cute pastime that occasionally has value when trying to seduce or vent. But spoken word is so much more...it is our soundtrack. Have you been listening? Ingrid B, founder of #OnTheBSide Entertainment, reminds us of the role poetry plays in our life & ability to weather the social storms of our times. I met Ingrid while serving as a priest in Miami. Trying to escape Coral Gables, one of my Miami brothers told me about the soul of South Florida and the Ambassador of that Soul, Ms. Ingrid B. What was crazy about that encounter was that I learned her father was also a priest in the Episcopal Diocese I was serving! So here's this PK (preacher's kid) who's head of this artistic underworld. It was incredibly compelling...to see her host & navigate an evening to a near Eucharistic joy was a thing of beauty that I had to respect. Spoken Word still Remains an Underworld Well at least for me it does...even though poetry is always present. Spoken Word rarely ever fails me. Yet how so often I fail spoken word. It's so easy for the poetic word to be shunned when facing a life that can easily seem void of beauty. When the world is filled with chaos and bigotry and hatred...when things seem hopeless...when the happenings of life render us powerless: it seems there is no beauty. But spoken word is there too..seeing what is truly ugly and conveying it with such beauty that one is compelled to hope. True hope...not that false hope. So what does spoken word have to contribute in the present socio-political climate? I #AskIngridB in this episode of Blacks with Power. Hear what she has to say and share your response! Black Organizations are going to face a difficult time, if a few key things do not change quickly and methodically. Despite not being 100% sure of her desired practice area when she graduated from Harvard Law School, Deirdre Stanley, now general counsel of Thomson Reuters, was certain of two things: she wanted to work in business and wanted to do so in New York City. During her tenure in Biglaw doing mergers and acquisitions, Deirdre found her calling working alongside in-house counsels. She realized that in order to advance, she would need to diversify her experience, so when the opportunity to head business development at USA Network came up, she took it. That off-path experience eventually paved the way for an offer from Thomson Reuters to head their legal department. In this episode of In-House Legal, host Randy Milch interviews Deirdre Stanley about her path to the top. Together, they discuss her background, pivotal decisions along the way, and how being interested in multiple disciplines is the key to high level positions. Tune in to hear her advice for lawyers in today’s market and about her daily duties to maintain a free press worldwide. Deirdre Stanley is the executive vice president, general counsel, and board secretary at Thomson Reuters. Prior to her current role, she held various legal and senior executive positions, including deputy general counsel at IAC (previously USA Networks, Inc.). From 1997 to 1999, Deirdre served as associate general counsel for GTE Corporation (a predecessor company to Verizon), where she headed the mergers and acquisitions practice group. She currently serves as a vice chair on the Board of Trustees of the Hospital for Special Surgery and is a member of both the Council on Foreign Relations and the Executive Leadership Council.
