The Steelers face the Cowboys under the lights in primetime for the first time since Super Bowl XXX. Besides Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb there isn't much to fear about the Cowboys offense, and Dallas has a very beatable run defense so both Justin Fields and Najee Harris should have big games on the ground. Tom and Jacob make their predictions for who steps up vs Dallas as a Big Ballah.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The 1995 Steelers had a clear mission: avenge the previous season's failure. In the AFC Championship Game, the Steelers had the ball on the 3 yard line with time for one final play and a shot at their first Super Bowl trip since the 70's. That play fell short and after an offseason which saw a lot of change, fans wondered if the team would ever get that close again. But the 1995 season became a truly magical run full of great moments and memorable games which brought them right back to needing a big play in the final moments of the AFC Championship Game yet again. We will revisit that season in our latest episode.REWIND is a series of our favorite Pittsburgh Sports Memories episodes that we will be dropping in between new episodesConnect with the show:Visit us on the webFollow us on TwitterFollow us on Facebook

Levon Kirkland was a linebacker for the Pittsburgh Stealers. He was smaller than many others who played the position. He was faster than many too. In fact, it has been said that Levon Kirkland created what has become the modern Line Backer position. And after seeing what Levon did to Emmet Smith in the Super Bowl XXX you probably don't want to argue the point. Kendall Robert Gammon is a former American football long snapper who played for three teams in the National Football League. He was drafted 291st overall in the 1992 NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. After spending four years with the New Orleans Saints, Gammon signed with the Chiefs as a free agent in February 2000. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2005 as a special teams player, long snapping for the AFC team. Kendall played in 218 consecutive games and appeared in Super Bowl XXX with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1995. He never, ever snapped a ball over the head of a punter or extra point/field goal holder. He even talks about performing center ring for Barnum and Bailey. That is Kendall's professional accomplishments. The beauty of this podcast is you get to meet the real authentic, no B.S Kendall and how he overcame some heavy emotions of childhood abuse to achieve great success. The fact that he is so willing to share his soul makes this and him a one-of-a-kind human being. Thank you Kendall Gammon for your heart kendallgammon.com
Dominance in the NFL starts at the very top. There have been only five NFL dynasties during the Super Bowl era -- four of them were forged by the vision of a single head coach. The 1995 Dallas Cowboys were the exception. They won their third world championship of the 1990s under new leadership in Barry Switzer. Despite being without Jimmy Johnson, who had led the Cowboys to two Lombardi Trophies, and being burdened with free agent losses, off-the-field distractions and injuries, Dallas was determined to capture its third title in four years. The Cowboys overcame these obstacles thanks largely to the stellar play of "the Triplets" -- Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin -- and the acquisition of a fourth superstar, All-Pro cornerback Deion Sanders. Still, it was the player opposite Sanders who made the biggest impact in Super Bowl XXX. Cornerback Larry Brown became one of the unlikeliest MVPs in Super Bowl history, intercepting two passes in a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. At last, Dallas was a dynasty.

Levon Kirkland is an American football coach and former professional player. A second-round draft choice of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1992 NFL Draft, he played 11 years as a linebacker in the National Football League, including nine seasons with the Steelers, and one each for the Seattle Seahawks and the Philadelphia Eagles. He played college football for the Clemson Tigers. Kirkland was a massive inside linebacker, just 6'1" but weighing anywhere from 275-300 pounds during his career. Despite his size, he had great speed and agility. He became a starter at inside linebacker for the Steelers in his second season, 1993, replacing Pro Bowler David Little. On August 14, 1995, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed Kirkland to a four-year, $6 million contract that includes a signing bonus of $900,000. By 1995, he was recognized as one of the top inside linebackers in the league and had a stellar performance in Super Bowl XXX against the Dallas Cowboys at the end of the season. In that game, the Steeler's defense held the Cowboys to just 15 first downs and Emmitt Smith and the Cowboy's powerful running attack to just 56 yards, despite losing 27–17 in large part due to two key interceptions thrown by Steelers quarterback Neil O'Donnell. Kirkland had 10 tackles and a key sack of Dallas quarterback Troy Aikman. That game and his outstanding 1996 season earned Kirkland his first trip to the Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors after the 1996 season. The Steelers had lost their emotional leader, outside linebacker Greg Lloyd, at the start of the season to a knee injury, but Kirkland took over the mantle of leadership. He also took over Lloyd's role in pass coverage as the only linebacker in the Steelers nickel defense. Opponents thought Kirkland would not be as adept in pass coverage as the fast Lloyd, but they quickly found out that Kirkland was just as fast and quick. He had four interceptions that season, a high number for an inside linebacker, to go along with four sacks and 114 tackles. Kirkland made the Pro Bowl after the 1997 season as well, making a career-high and team-leading 126 tackles and career-high five sacks, as the Steelers went to the AFC Championship game (losing to the Denver Broncos). Although Kirkland played well in the next three seasons (1998–2000), the Steelers struggled on offense and failed to make the playoffs, and Kirkland did not earn any more Pro Bowl berths despite his strong play. In a surprise move, the Steelers waived Kirkland just before the 2001 season due to salary cap pressure[citation needed]. That year many star players were waived due to the salary cap including John Randle, Troy Aikman, and Jerry Rice. Kirkland went to the Seattle Seahawks where he became a leader on the defense and had over 100 tackles. The next year, he played his final season for the Eagles, becoming the veteran leader of a defense that ranked seventh in the league and advanced to the NFC Championship game before losing to the Buccaneers. In 1996, Kirkland was named to Clemson University's All-Centennial team and was inducted into the University's Hall of Fame in 2001. After retiring from the NFL, he returned to Clemson and earned his sociology degree in 2004, and worked for Clemson coordinating minority recruitment in admissions for the university. He was inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008. Kirkland also educates student-athletes across the country on the college recruiting process as an Educational Speaker for the National Collegiate Scouting Association. After coaching linebackers for Wade Hampton High School in Greenville, South Carolina in 2009, Kirkland worked as the assistant head coach at Woodmont High School in South Carolina until November 2011 when he was named the head coach for Shannon Forest Christian School in Greenville, South Carolina. In March 2013, Kirkland accepted a job coaching linebackers at Florida A&M University. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/letssipandtalkwithfrema/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/letssipandtalkwithfrema/support

Opening It's time for… Lombardi Memories. A show that takes you back in time, into January or February, to the greatest one-day spectacle in all of sports. This is the every-other-Tuesday podcast that looks back at each and every one of the 50-plus Super Bowls and tells the story of who won and why. For the fan who needs more than a boxscore, this podcast goes drive-by-drive, play-by-play through the most dramatic games in history. I'm your host, Tommy A. Phillips, and you can visit my website at tommyaphillips.com where you can find all of my books. Today we have Super Bowl XIII, which was held on January 21, 1979 in the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida between the three-time AFC champion and two-time Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers and the five-time NFC champion and defending Super Bowl champion Dallas Cowboys. As always, we have a pop quiz, and then homework at the end of the episode. The pop quiz question for today is: what unusual special teams feat was accomplished in both this Super Bowl, and also the next Super Bowl between the Cowboys and Steelers? That would be Super Bowl XXX, which had something that also happened in this game. The answer will come at the end of the podcast. The NFL expanded to a 16-game schedule in 1978. That would remain the season length for the next 42 years, with the exceptions of the 1982 and 1987 seasons, both of which were affected by player strikes. The NFL also added a second wild card to each conference, meaning that the two wild cards would play in a wild card game, and the three division champions got first-round byes. The Steelers romped right through their first 16-game schedule, winning their first seven games and going on to win 14 of 16 games. They had little trouble in the playoffs, dispatching Denver 33-10 and beating up on Houston 34-5 in the AFC Championship Game. They were led by quarterback Terry Bradshaw, who threw for 2,915 yards and 28 touchdowns. Running back Franco Harris ran for over 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns. Receiver Lynn Swann led in all receiving categories with 61 catches for 880 yards and 11 touchdowns, but John Stallworth was right behind him with 41 catches for 798 yards and nine scores. Dallas's road to the Super Bowl was much more of a bumpy ride. After starting out 2-0, the Cowboys lost four of their next eight games and sat at only 6-4 at midseason. But they turned things around, winning all of their final six regular-season games, and most of them by big margins. The Cowboys then got by Atlanta 27-20 in the divisional round before beating Los Angeles 28-0 in the NFC Championship Game. The Cowboys were led, as they were a year before, by quarterback Roger Staubach, who threw for 3,190 yards and 25 touchdowns. Running back Tony Dorsett ran for 1,325 yards and seven touchdowns. Running back Robert Newhouse had another 584 yards and eight scores. The Cowboys had five players catch at least 34 balls, with Preston Pearson leading in catches with 47, and Tony Hill leading in yards with 823. First Quarter Chicago Bears founder George S. Halas tossed the coin, which came up heads. The Cowboys won and chose to receive. Receiver Butch Johnson took the kick back to the 28. Running back Tony Dorsett ran it twice to start the game, and he took the ball into Pittsburgh territory at the 47. After running back Robert Newhouse was stopped for no gain, Dorsett took a pitch from quarterback Roger Staubach and made a first down at the 34. On the next play, however, the Cowboys tried a trick play. Receiver Drew Pearson fumbled when trying to get the ball from Dorsett, and defensive tackle John Banaszak recovered for Pittsburgh. Running back Franco Harris tried a couple of runs, going nowhere to start the drive. Quarterback Terry Bradshaw converted on third down, finding...
Our journey in the BTSC Delorean to Steeler yesterday begins in a time when the Pittsburgh Steelers were trying to keep their playoff hopes alive in a place that was all too unfriendly to them in 1997...the road. At 8-4, Bill Cowher’s Steelers had only won twice away from Three Rivers Stadium. After losing a game they were supposed to win in Philadelphia the week before, the Steelers were at a crucial juncture, tied atop the division with Jacksonville who already won on the day. Their foe was a 3-9 Arizona who had lost seven of their games decided in the final minute and four that went into Overtime. Couple it with being in a city that they have lost all three times they visited, including Super Bowl XXX...the Steelers needed to win badly. Learn more about your ad choices. When Jerry Jones fired Jimmy Johnson following consecutive Super Bowl victories in 1994--and brought Barry Switzer out of exile to coach the Dallas Cowboys--it rocked the football world. Switzer fills in some vivid details from that indelible chapter of NFL history and talks about the great times he had along the way, including an epic Super Bowl XXX week in Arizona with Mike at his side. Switzer also recalls an ill-fated trip in a twin-engine aircraft while on the Oklahoma recruiting trail and the controversial call he made late in the 1995 NFL season that compelled some fans to call him “Bozo the Clown.”

The motto for the 1995 Steelers was “three more yards” based on the disappointing way that the previous season had ended. It was a season full of big moments and memorable games that resulted in a trip to Super Bowl XXX. And while the Steelers literally got those three yards, their championship dreams ultimately vanished into the arms of Larry Brown.Connect with the show:Visit us on the webFollow us on TwitterFollow us on Facebook
