President Joe Biden will not enforce a ban on TikTok, leaving the decision to President-elect Donald Trump. The outgoing administration will transfer the law requiring TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to divest the app by January 19. Trump, who previously supported a ban, now plans to keep TikTok operational in the U.S. TikTok's CEO, Shou Zi Chew, will attend Trump's inauguration. National security adviser Mike Waltz mentioned potential measures to maintain TikTok's availability and stated the law could allow for extensions if viable solutions arise. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer supports extending the deadline to protect users while bipartisan discussions continue. Senator Tom Cotton raised concerns about TikTok being a security threat. The Supreme Court is reviewing a legal challenge to the law, which could lead to the requirement for ByteDance to sell TikTok on national security grounds. If upheld, Trump will prioritize user interests while addressing data protection.Learn more on this news visit us at: https://greyjournal.net/ Hosted on Acast. On Monday US President-elect Donald Trump met the company's CEO, Shou Zi Chew, and now people are questioning if he will try and stop this ban, and save the app.Rhiannon Williams, a UK-based tech journalist, talks us through how Trump's relationship to TikTok has changed over the years, including how he utilised it to target young people in the presidential election, and why some people are calling this a clever move politically. Plus Natalie Jimenez, a BBC reporter based in New York, reviews Trump's TikTok page for us and shares if it's hot, or a flop.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

TikTok is one of the fastest growing social media platforms in the world, and now has over a billion users worldwide. But its future in the United States remains in limbo. The Biden administration, citing national security concerns, has demanded that the Chinese-owned company be sold, or face a federal ban. Montana lawmakers have already passed legislation banning the platform on personal devices, sending the bill to the governor. A lot of questions remain about the feasibility of statewide and federal bans, and why, exactly, do U.S. policymakers view this platform, that started as a lip syncing app, as such a threat? Jacob Ward is the NBC News technology correspondent and is author of “In The Loop: How Technology Is Creating a World Without Choices and How to Fight Back.” He joins WITHpod to discuss what's driven the app's exponential growth, the company's lack of transparency in the past, the case for and against it, what could be ahead on the regulatory front and more.
Last week, in its most high-profile effort yet to focus attention on data privacy and security, the House Committee on Energy & Commerce held a hearing with TikTok's CEO Shou Zi Chew. The full-Committee hearing was high drama, with sharp statements and accusations about TikTok's connections to the Chinese government, wide attendance by Committee members, and extensive press coverage during the hearing and afterwards. Some members (notably Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers) called for TikTok to be banned from the U.S., while others asked pointed questions without committing to support a ban. Members also used the opportunity to push for federal privacy legislation (and specifically the bipartisan ADPPA), which they said would help to address the dangers posed by Big Tech companies like TikTok. https://www.adlawaccess.com/2023/03/articles/is-time-really-up-for-tiktok-details-from-the-house-committee-hearing-with-tiktok-ceo-shou-zi-chew/ Jessica Rich jrich@kelleydrye.com (202) 342-8580 https://www.kelleydrye.com/Our-People/Jessica-L-Rich Darby Hobbs dhobbs@kelleydrye.com (202) 342-8412 https://www.kelleydrye.com/Our-People/Darby-B-Hobbs Subscribe to the Ad Law Access blog - www.adlawaccess.com/subscribe/ Subscribe to the Ad Law News Newsletter - https://www.kelleydrye.com/News-Events/Publications/Newsletters/Ad-Law-News-and-Views?dlg=1 View the Advertising and Privacy Law Resource Center - https://www.kelleydrye.com/Advertising-and-Privacy-Law-Resource-Center Find all of our links here linktr.ee/KelleyDryeAdLaw Hosted by Simone Roach

U.S. lawmakers have said that they are moving forward with a plan to ban TikTok, one of the most popular apps in the world. In hearings last week, Congress questioned TikTok's C.E.O., Shou Zi Chew, about the platform's addictive algorithm, its content, and whether it shares user data with the Chinese government. The hearings bore a resemblance to the questioning of Mark Zuckerberg over Facebook in 2018—not least because of the representatives' incomprehension of how the technology works. This déjà vu raises questions: Why hasn't anything been done to protect Americans' data privacy? And is a ban the only way? Kyle Chayka, who wrote about Chew and his critics at the hearings, joins Tyler Foggatt for a conversation about what separates the real dangers of TikTok from alarmism and xenophobia.
In this episode, host Bidemi Ologunde discussed how geopolitics is intersecting with popular culture and national security, as seen in the ongoing issues with TikTok.TimestampsPart 1: "The Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S." (2:06)Part 2: "An escalating tit-for-tat of tech protectionism." On March 23, 2023, the CEO of TikTok, Shou Zi Chew was asked to appear before the US congress and answer questions regarding TikTok's invasive features, possible ties to the Chinese government, and extremely negative effects the app is having on people's mental health.According to the members of congress, this meeting would have been Mr. Chew's opportunity to prove that TikTok can be trusted by the American people and that it shouldn't be banned in the US. However, the congressional hearing ended up being a brutal 5 hours of what some people would call foolish questioning that left many of us thinking that TikTok will in fact be banned in the United States simply because the people who would enact this ban are afraid of something they clearly don't understand. So in this episode and the next one, we're gonna be diving deeper into this situation and helping you learn much more about:The English languageAmerican culture & politicsHow to listen attentively and understand the difference between what someone says and what they meanWhat the banning of TikTok in The States could mean for people like you and meLearn practical strategies for mastering English with podcasts

Will Project Texas be enough to satisfy Congress? Is TikTok just part of a larger problem with social media platforms and data privacy? TikTok is on Capitol Hill today. Shou Zi Chew, the CEO of the popular social media app, testified in front of Congress about the company's data security practices and its relationship with the Chinese government, as more lawmakers advocate for banning the app in the United States. Read more:Shou Zi Chew, the CEO of TikTok, testified in front of the House Energy Committee for five hours on Thursday. He was grilled by lawmakers on issues ranging from data privacy to national security. For years, lawmakers have threatened to ban the social media app in the United States, and legislation is inching forward that might make it a reality. But there are sharp generational and political divisions on the subject, with TikTok users more likely to oppose a ban. Recent polling shows that more Americans back a TikTok ban than oppose one. And TikTok says there are 150 million active monthly users in the United States. Business and tech policy reporter Cristiano Lima, who also writes the Technology 202 newsletter, joins us from the Hill to discuss the hearing and what this might mean for TikTok in the United States.

The chief executive of TikTok has been defending the Chinese-owned video-sharing app in the face of hostile questioning at a US Congressional committee hearing. Shou Zi Chew denied TikTok is a national security risk and played down the company's connection to China. He insisted data would never be given to the Chinese Communist Party, but did accept that data is currently accessible to staff in China. The committee chair Cathy Rodgers described TikTok as a weapon of the Chinese Communist Party that ought to be banned. Members of Congress also accused TikTok of delivering harmful content to young people. While TikTok might be one of the world's most popular social media apps, it has raised national security concerns among U.S. lawmakers and the Biden administration. With the app now facing a nationwide ban, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew will testify before Congress amid heightened U.S.-China tech tensions. Could this be the end of TikTok?Returning to the show is Jon Bateman, a senior fellow in Carnegie's Technology and International Affairs Program and author of U.S.-China Technological “Decoupling”: A Strategy and Policy Framework. He joins Stewart to unpack the drama over the possibility of a nationwide TikTok ban and how it fits into the broader picture of U.S.-China strategic competition.
A leading technology policy expert is calling for "a wholesale ban on TikTok" a day before the Chinese-owned social media app's chief executive officer will testify before Congress.TikTok faces bipartisan scrutiny at both the state and federal level. More than 30 states, led by both Democrat and Republican governors, have taken action to ban the app on some or all state-issued devices and networks, The Daily Signal previously reported. TikTok's chief executive officer, Shou Zi Chew, will appear before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on Thursday. "I think the TikTok national security threat is so grave, so immediate, that TikTok should be banned outright," says Kara Frederick, director of the Tech Policy Center at The Heritage Foundation. (The Daily Signal is the news outlet of The Heritage Foundation.)Frederick, whose research focuses on emerging technology policy and Big Tech, adds that she is calling for "a wholesale ban on TikTok, not just on government devices." She talks about the danger of "allowing U.S. user data to get in the hands of the [Chinese Communist Party]."Frederick joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to further discuss the TikTok CEO's testimony, what she would ask Shou if she were in the hearing, and The Heritage Foundation's "Moms Against TikTok" rally, which is also on Thursday. Keith Krach, former undersecretary of state for economic growth, energy, and the environment in the Trump administration, is adamant about what questions he would have lawmakers ask TikTok's chief executive officer, Shou Zi Chew, during Shou's appearance before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on March 23."Well, maybe the first thing I'd ask him is, 'Are there members of the [Chinese] Communist Party on your board?' And the answer would be 'yes,'" says Krach, who chairs the Krach Institute for Tech Diplomacy at Purdue University."I think the other questions I would ask him would be around China's National Security Intelligence Act that requires any Chinese company, state-owned or otherwise, or any Chinese individual, to turn over any data, proprietary information, anything of that sort, data upon request of the Chinese Communist Party," Krach added, "And if you don't do that, you're going to go to prison. I would ask him about that."Krach joins today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast" to discuss some of the national security concerns surrounding the Chinese-owned app TikTok and Chinese President Xi Jinping's upcoming meeting in Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin next week. We're told companies are abandoning the cloud to save money. But is the trend our friend?
