Jacob Sullum from Reason emphasizes that our constitutional history reveals not only the ingenuity of lawmakers but also the malleability of foundational legal concepts in the face of changing circumstances. As we examine this progression, we each need to reflect on the delicate balance between effective governance and the preservation of constitutional limitations, a tension that continues to shape American democracy today.

The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (05/09/2024): 3:05pm- During an interview with CNN's Erin Burnett, President Joe Biden revealed that he would not supply weapons to Israel if they insisted on pursuing Hamas in Rafah. Rich notes that Congress explicitly provided $26 billion in military assistance for Israel in last month's $95 billion foreign aid bill. Is President Biden withholding weaponry (including precision targeting technology that would reduce civilian casualties) in order to appease radical progressives on college campuses? 3:15pm- While appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, MSNBC host Jen Psaki said her role as former Biden White House Press Secretary somehow makes her more qualified to offer commentary on the administration. But doesn't that mean she can't really be objective? Psaki also acknowledged that President Joe Biden and his campaign team are very much aware that young voters on college campuses oppose American support for Israel. 3:30pm- Flashback: In 2019, President Joe Biden said of potentially cutting off aid to Israel: “The idea that we could cut off military aid to an ally—our only true, true ally in the region—is absolutely preposterous.” 3:40pm- Jay Town—Former United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss the latest information on former President Trump's “hush money” trial in New York City as court resumes on Thursday. 4:05pm- Jacob Sullum of Reason writes that adult film star Stormy Daniels and former Trump attorney Michael Cohen both have real credibility issues. Will jurors conclude that revenge is the motivating factor behind their testimony against former President Donald Trump in his “hush money” trial? You can read Sullum's full article here: https://reason.com/2024/05/08/stormy-daniels-credibility-issues-reflect-a-broader-problem-with-key-witnesses-against-trump/ 4:30pm- Fatties for Palestine…yes, this is a real organization. 4:40pm- While speaking with Sage Steele, Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said he would allow abortion up to the point of birth. Is he really going to steal votes from Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump? It seems unlikely. Kennedy is now on the ballot in Utah, Michigan, California, Delaware, and Oklahoma—and has the required signatures in New Hampshire, Nevada, Hawaii, North Carolina, Iowa, and Ohio. 4:50pm- Zach Schonfeld of The Hill writes: “[Donald] Trump's hush money judge rejected the former president's request to narrow his gag order so he can speak publicly about porn actor Stormy Daniels now that she has completed her testimony in Trump's ongoing criminal trial.” You can read more here: https://thehill.com/regulation/court-battles/4654627-judge-denies-trump-request-to-narrow-gag-order-to-respond-to-stormy-daniels/ 5:05pm- Hollywood star Nick Searcy joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his new documentary, “The War on Truth”—which investigates what unfolded at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021. A new House Judiciary Committee report uncovered more of the Biden administration's collusion with Facebook, YouTube and Amazon to silence constitutionally protected speech. The administration in some cases threatened these companies, pushing them to censor content or change their moderation guidelines, specifically with regards to fighting ‘vaccine hesitancy' during the COVID-19 pandemic.” You can read the full report here: https://newsbusters.org/blogs/free-speech/christian-baldwin/2024/05/06/bombshell-judiciary-report-reveals-bidens-white 6:15pm- While speaking with CNN's Erin Burnett, President Joe Biden blamed the 30% increase in grocery prices on “corporate greed” and then suggested people “have the money to spend.” 6:35pm- During an interview with CNN's Erin Burnett, President Joe Biden revealed that he would not supply weapons to Israel if they insisted on pursuing Hamas in Rafah. The Chevron doctrine. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court heard arguments in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo and Relentless, Inc. v. Department of Commerce, two challenges to the so-called Chevron doctrine (or Chevron deference). The conservative-leaning court seems poised to limit or strike Chevron deference down, reversing 40 years of judicial precedent that was once championed by conservative icon and former Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. The Justice Department's inspector general in 2019 found similar flaws in the FBI inquiry but found the investigation was justified…He concluded that the FBI didn't rigorously analyze information it received, especially from people and groups with political affiliation, prolonging the investigation and prompting the appointment of Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Welcome to another enlightening episode of The Rational Egoist, where host Michael Liebowitz delves into thought-provoking topics from a rational perspective. In this episode, Michael is joined by renowned journalist and author Jacob Sullum to discuss the controversial and complex issue of the War on Drugs. The conversation explores the unintended consequences of drug prohibition and its impact on individual rights and freedom. Our hosts examine how prohibiting people from taking drugs leads to the imposition of taxes on drugs, driving up costs and reducing accessibility for those who may require them for legitimate medical purposes.Jacob and Michael also discuss how the prohibition of drugs forces manufacturers to create concentrated and adulterated versions, often laced with other substances to avoid detection. This not only poses a significant risk to users but also fuels a dangerous black market that operates outside the bounds of safety regulations and oversight.Furthermore, they shed light on how the War on Drugs restricts the medical use of certain substances, preventing doctors from prescribing potentially beneficial treatments to their patients. This overreach of government intervention in healthcare decisions ultimately leads to errors and suboptimal patient outcomes.Join Michael Liebowitz and Jacob Sullum as they dissect the complexities of the War on Drugs from a rational lens, advocating for rational self-interest and individual liberty
The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (03/15/2023): 3:05pm- On Tuesday, Congressman Jeff Van Drew—Republican representing New Jersey's 2nd Congressional District—held a town hall meeting to address the estimated fourteen whales that have washed up along the Atlantic coast since December 2022. Many environmental experts believe the sudden, drastic uptick in whale deaths is linked to offshore wind development's usage of sonar to map the ocean's floor. Why doesn't New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy do something to halt this disturbing trend? 3:30pm- Rich recaps Congressman Jeff Van Drew's (R-NJ) town hall. PLUS why is NPR bizarrely blaming Atlantic coast whale deaths on lobstermen? 3:50pm- Listener “Groovie Grapes” on Twitter hilariously declares, “Captain Ahab had more compassion for whales than Gov. In this episode, I talk to Jacob Sullum, senior editor at Reason magazine, about a recent piece he wrote entitled The Perils of Trying to Curtail Hazily Defined ‘Disinformation'. In this article, he discusses a recent rating given to Reason by an organization called the Global Disinformation Index (GDI) that named Reason as one of the '10 riskiest online news sources' in the United States. In this interview, we discuss the subjectivity that is inherent in popular conceptions of ‘disinformation', how the criteria used by the GDI are deeply contradictory, how the GDI received funding from the State Department, and why free speech and the 1st Amendment are so important. Jacob provides a wide-sweeping and insightful analysis of the massive contemporary (mis)use of the term ‘disinformation' and the ways in which organizations often wrongly apply it in popular discourse. And why are only Republicans interested in protecting endangered whales who keep washing up along the New Jersey shore? New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy seems to be prioritizing a potential run for president over protecting marine life. 4:30pm- On Tuesday, President Joe Biden spoke from Warsaw, Poland on the one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Biden emphasized that no one is seeking to control Russia—and earlier this week, he pledged to continue to support Ukraine for “as long as it takes.” 4:35pm- Chinese leader Xi Jinping is planning to meet with Russian leader Vladmir Putin in Moscow in the coming months—alarmingly, China is expected to begin supporting the Russian military with lethal military aid. How could this impact America's involvement in the Russia-Ukraine War? 5:35pm- While appearing on MSNBC with Mehdi Hasan, progressive commentator Wajahat Ali used racist and derogatory language when talking about Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley. 5:50pm- According to a new NPR report, many Americans are putting pickles on their pizza. 6:05pm- According to a CNN report from Sean Lyngaas, “[t]he US military's Special Operations Command says it is investigating a report from a cybersecurity researcher that the command was leaking a trove of unclassified email data on the internet.” 6:10pm- Brittany Bernstein of National Review reports that the House Oversight Committee is in the process of investigating business ties between former president of the U.N. General Assembly Vuk Jeremic and the Biden family. 6:20pm- Is Temple University's campus safe? 6:30pm- Who Won Social Media? Is this the first time someone has won twice in one day? 6:35pm- In a new editorial, Reason's Jacob Sullum writes that Facebook “slapped a warning on a column” he wrote where he “criticized the CDC for exaggerating the evidence supporting mask mandates.”

In a one-two policy punch that couldn't be more perfect for big tobacco, the Biden administration moves to restrict nicotine levels in cigarettes while the FDA pursues a ban on Juul vapes. Next, SCOTUS upholds the right to concealed carry in all 50 states while the Senate passes a bipartisan gun bill that probably wouldn't have stopped any of our most recent or deadly mass shootings. Finally, the Federal Reserve just might get a brand new mandate—with more to come. Last week I shared my curated COVID-19 reading list, which is keeping me relaxed and confident in my belief that we are overreacting. While we should worry about the incursions of civil and economic freedoms being brought about in response, people like Jacob Sullum of Reason and Jeffrey Tucker of AIER are doing a service by calming people down about the virus itself.Don Boudreaux over at Cafe Hayek also deserves special mention for leading me to most of my trusted sources with his blog's daily links. It's hard to keep up with all of the outstanding writing he's highlighted over the past weeks, including his own increasingly relevant review of Robert Higgs's Crisis and Leviathan for the American Institute for Economic Research, and a must-read article for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review on Essential Questions about Essential Medicine.Twitter has reportedly begun to censor non-certified-expert advice on matters related to the coronavirus, so I will limit this Sunday's show to the subject of economics and politics where we are still free to opine (for now). I predict that future economics and political science students will look back in horror at this period – not for the mortality rate, which appears to be marginally higher than an average flu season – but for the acquiescence to draconian restrictions, unprecedented spending, and enlargement of state, local and federal bureaucracy (not to mention the failure of basic functions by the existing apparatus, i.e., FDA).Most media analysis misses what Frédéric Bastiat called “that which is unseen.” Dead bodies being carted away by truck to the morgue is a striking image, and is seen by millions on media loop. Business closures, economic hardship, and looming inflation are harder to see and thus get downplayed in the calculus.Trump's “VERY BIG & BOLD” $2 trillion stimulus produces highly visible benefits in the short-term, but the costs are unseen – postponed to be paid by future generations.Don returned to the show to help me settle the question on all thinking people's minds: is it worth it?Is it worth the loss of liberty? Is it worth trillions in damage to the economy? Is it worth the separation from friends, family, and the myriad economic relationships that have been severed? For the sake of argument, Don and I will assume that the more dire predictions about mortality are true.Join us in asking the hard but important questions on the show of idea - not attitude.
