S****y Idea Time: a celebration of bold business experiments
Since he was a child John Odden has been fascinated with improving his health, fitness and athleticism. He was a tall, skinny, awkward kid growing up who always lacked confidence, especially in the gym. So after begging his parents to get some home equipment for some time, he got his first set of plastic-covered cement weights from Target at age 12. He's since gone on to become #1 World Ranked in the Scottish Highland Games and is a kettlebell Beast Tamer and all around strongman. He's the owner of Empowered Strength and Sanctuary of Strength in Bend OR. In this episode we talk about how being a generalist can serve your business and how lifting heavy things can make you a better entrepreneur.
Indigenous strength sports have been around for hundreds of years—if not a millennia—with nearly every culture claiming their own. Most, if not all, of these sports are centered on lifting or throwing ancient agricultural equipment, such as stones, oxcarts, and axes. As our modern economy continues to evolve and change, it's worth asking the question—what will become of these ancient sports under a changing and unpredictable economy? I spoke with Maeve Eguzkia, a Basque-American, who's a competitor in powerlifting, Scottish Highland Games, as well as Herri Kirolak—or Basque popular sports, to learn more about the Basque and their national games.

This is a call from a while back. ******************************** Yesterday we went to the Scottish Highland Games in San Diego. There was a very intriguing event. Sheep dog after sheep dog was graded on how well they could guide sheep through various obstacles on a specific course. The dogs had to respond to unpredictable turns the sheep would make. Uphill, downhill. Turn to the left. Wait. Corral the stragglers. Get all the players going the same way. And they had to handle a slow down when the sheep wanted to graze. It reminded me of what it can feel like to create a product or business. Lots of twists and turns with unpredictable things to respond to. What amazed me was how well the dogs and handlers could see what was starting to happen in such early moments. It was almost as if they were predicting it. The actual truth was simply that they knew the most likely patterns. They understood the behaviors and roles. Moving from a prototype into actual production can feel a lot like herding sheep. The people and businesses that are most successful are the ones that can navigate the process. So today's the day we talk about "Design for Manufacturing". (Some people abbreviate and just say DfM.) Anyone who is making a product, or trying to license a product, needs to understand what the heck DfM is. If you need help with your product, please email Jeff at Jeff@ProductsToProfits.com or visit our website at www.ProductsToProfits.com

My name is Hester I am from South Africa. I like Celtic music and I was looking for a station that plays Celtic music. I came across your podcasts and I love it so much. This is really my favourite podcast to listen to even though I don't get to all of them, it is the only thing that I listen to on TuneIn radio. I absolutely love bagpipes, making your podcasts even more special. Thank you for keeping traditional music alive. (Even if it is not my culture) Keep up the good work." Adriana Sanroman emailed: "Hello from Mexico! I have enjoyed your podcast from the very first year and I really did love the last episode with Jesse Ferguson. In fact, the guest episodes have been amazing. I usually listen to you while working, I work as an archaeological conservator in a field lab in the middle of this hectic city. Thanks for the amazing work and go brágh!" Beth Hlabse emailed: "I just wanted to thank you, Marc, for episode 418. I really needed something positive in my life right now and this episode definitely was that. Peace” Kim Knebel emailed: "Dear Marc, Thank you for the countless hours you give to creating these podcasts, keeping up your newsletter and all the other things you do and are involved in. I want to say "bravo" to you for calling out whoever the arse was that had something bad to say about the guest host(ess), Susan, and your efforts to support FairPle. Good music is good music no matter who is playing. Sad but true, women are misrepresented in many venues, have been for quite some time. My mother, who would be 105-6 were she alive, couldn't be the textile designer she wanted to be, because that was a man's domain in her era. So, I thank you and all those who are working to gain more recognition for women in the arts and in general. Slainte!"

Adriane Wilson was born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1980 to Rick and Rae Blewitt. She has one sister, Samantha, who is two years older than her. Adriane followed her sister around and participated in all the sports she tried; golf, softball, and track and field. She lost her Dad right before my senior year of High School so life was a little uncertain as she matured into adulthood. However, she found her passion for track and field when she went to college at Ashland University and majored in Physical Education and Health. Her college coach was 4X Olympian, Jud Logan and he guided me to a life of dedication and perseverance. His daily lessons of excellence helped me achieve athletic success and victory over the biggest challenge of my life. She was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma at the age of 23 in the peak of her athletic career. Her dream of making the US Olympic Team in 2004 was shattered. With the support of my family, coach, teammates, and the community she was able to compete and finish 5th in the shot put at the 2004 US Olympic Trials a couple months after chemotherapy. She continued training for the '08 and '12 US Olympic Trials but never quite got back to the top. In the meantime, she began competing in the Scottish Highland Games for fun. This 'fun' turned into an amazing experience of traveling the world wearing a kilt, throwing stones and flipping trees, and earning World Champion titles along the way. Now retired from competing in the shot put, she trains for the Highland Games and works as a personal trainer in two gyms in Columbia, South Carolina. Her passion has shifted towards coaching. For the last two year, she has been contracted to coach US soldiers who are wounded, ill, or injured in the shot put and discus for the Warrior Games and Invictus Games. You've probably seen on TV or online the Highland Games: guys in kilts throwing giant logs, tossing hammers over their heads, etc. It's a fascinating strength competition, and one I've long wanted to learn more about and get in touch with my Scottish roots. Today on the show I'm talking with a Highland Games competitor named Matt Vincent. We talk what goes into training, how to get started with events if you're interested, a workout program called The Hate, and much more.
