Don't miss this  conversation on optimizing GLP-1 production and the power of consumers in driving change in the nutrition industry.Takeaways:GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic have been effective in managing weight and diabetes, but it's important to understand their potential benefits and risks.Integrating medication with nutrition and lifestyle changes can lead to optimal health outcomes.Making better, not perfect choices is a more sustainable approach to nutrition and health.Understanding what is better for our own bodies and making intentional choices is key.Moving away from the idea of perfection and focusing on continuous improvement is important for long-term success. Practitioners, if specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPMs) aren't already on your radar, you'll be a convert by the end of this New Frontiers episode. In functional medicine, we excel at addressing inflammation through nutrition and lifestyle. However, brilliant researchers like Dr. Charles Serhan from Harvard have shown us that resolving inflammation requires a two-phase approach. We need to shift gears, rally the cleanup crew, start the repair process, and turn down the volume on the immune system. This transition from inflammation to resolution is exactly what our guest, Ashley Koff, RD, will discuss. We'll explore why SPMs, discovered by Dr. Serhan, are crucial for healthy inflammation resolution and how Metagenics has developed a product using the patented Serhan method that has numerous clinical applications, from managing inflammation and pain to addressing neurodegenerative conditions, autoimmunity, and even infertility. We'll also delve into factors that influence our ability to convert omega-3 and -6 fatty acids into these superstar molecules, such as diet, genetics, inflammatory bias, and poor vagal tone. It is estimated that American adults consume 10-15g of fiber/per day and the RDA for adult women is to consume up to 25g and men up to 38g. As a whole, we are about halfway to where we need to be. We know fiber contributes to overall health and wellness, keeping you fuller for longer, aids in regular bowel movements, lowers cholesterol and stabilizes blood glucose levels. Did you know that consuming fiber leads to reduced levels of anxiety and depression, increased mood stabilization, weight loss and management, improved cognition, nutrient absorption, and decreased risk of colon cancer? When you eat fiber, it feeds the good bacteria in your microbiome, which in turn produce compounds called short-chain fatty acids, or postbiotics, and they are pretty important and fascinating. Women in menopause would greatly benefit from increasing their fiber intake for this reason alone.I have invited Ashley Koff to share her expertise on this topic to help you better understand what short-chain fatty acids are, why they matter to midlife women, and how to include more fiber in easy ways. It's not the sexiest topic, but it's a must-know for menopausal women.Ashley Koff is an award-winning personalized registered dietician and nutrition expert. Ask Ashley Koff, RD, what she recommends as a healthy diet. Her answer? It's always personal.    When it comes to pediatric pain management, nutrition is both challenging and essential for our patients. And the idea of nutrition can be overwhelming, and contradictory, for healthcare professionals as well. My guest, an award winning expert dietician, is also a master at taking big, complex and overwhelming concepts and turning them into simple, bite sized pieces that are easy to understand and put into practice.  Nutritional advice has become a fact sheet based afterthought of our medical practice. Most of us didn't receive the proper training that we need to provide useful guidance to patients, and we only realize this when we need to apply that advice to our own lives and family members.    What's worse, in this era of social media, there is so much emphasis on selling yourself as a physician that the baseline of our oath gets lost. As Ms. Koff puts it beautifully - We don't need to advertise what we can do. We have the tools and knowledge to help people, we need to dig deeper and share how it applies to each individual patients' lifestyles, instead of defaulting to a one size fits all answer. How many times have you said sugar is inflammatory without considering the diet of that season that the patient might be eating? Does the patient even have access to healthy options at home?    A natural marketer, Ms. Ashley Koff had an interest in selling from a young age and studied marketing at Duke prior to her dietetics and nutrition degree. During her own health journey, she herself tried fad and even self-described crazy diets and exercises, but never felt healthy, until a integrative gastroenterologist changed her life  simply asking her the questions and showing her a better way  to make better and appropriate choices. That started her on her current journey as one of the most respected and sought after Dieticians in the country.    In this episode, we discuss the mistakes we are all guilty of making when it comes to nutritional advice. She shares her best practices and free nutritional resources for you and your patients to use. And she specifically relates that to pain management, especially for children and how we can best support our patients and empower them to make better choices.    Takeaways What nutrition truly means Popsicle for breakfast anyone? How a breakfast popsicle might be what a pain patient needs! What personalization in nutrition means and how it can and should be tailored to our own and our patients' bodies?  What our medical training lacks when it comes to nutrition and how the focus of practice today is skewed towards selling ourselves and gaining followers. How to turn that around!  Pain and nutrition especially when it comes to children How nutritional considerations for pediatric pain patients differ from consideration for a healthier life style What Gamifying nutrition for kids looks like and the results it yields. What is the rainbow evaluation and how you can you do it and how often Debunking the myths of nutrients vs. nutrition, good and bad foods. Role of supplements vs. natural intake. Draw on those experiences to make your dreams a reality. A nutrition assessment can serve as a wonderfully useful tool in allowing you to see where you are and what your body needs before you make choices. When growing your business, it’s important to rely on the feedback of two groups of people: those who choose to experience you and those who choose not to experience you -- you can learn so much from both. With over twenty years in private practice, as an advisor, spokesperson, author and media expert, Koff currently runs The Better Nutrition Program — an organization “on a mission to make it easier and more efficient to assess current total nutrition to develop truly personalized recommendations.” She is the host of My Better Nutrition Alexa skill and co-host of the podcast Take Out With Ashley and Robyn. In this show, we discuss: Why magnesium is such an important mineral for helping the body destress. Why lifestyle choices like high-intensity training and a low-carbohydrate diet might be affecting your magnesium status. Why a blood test isn’t the best way to assess magnesium status. How we know if we get enough magnesium. Which is better — magnesium from food or supplements. What our body needs to use magnesium effectively When is the best time to assess magnesium needs Which forms of magnesium are best, including why magnesium can have a laxative effective depending on the amount or form taken Why gastric issues (like low motility) can influence which form of magnesium is best to take Why it’s important to keep sweetened magnesium supplements to a minimum in the evening and why salts and creams may be a good alternative During our discussion, Ashley offers podcast listeners a discount code for all of the resources available at The Better Nutrition Program website, including specifically The Magnesium Evaluation tool (Use CODE “UML20” at checkout for the discount.) She also shares insight into her Practitioner Network, where listeners can find a registered dietitian who specializes in various conditions, assessments and support of overall health goals. I wrap up my interview with Ashley giving listeners a reminder that Show Notes are always available on ThisUnmillennialLife.com along with any new recipes I’m posting. On this episode of Add Passion and Stir, three innovative leaders and a visionary young artist discuss possible solutions to our most pressing social problems. David Simpson (Executive Director of All Our Kids), Ashley Koff (nutrition expert) and Tahrook (23 year-old painter) join Share Our Strength founder and CEO Billy Shore for a conversation about how we need to bring out each individual’s potential in order to succeed as a country.“Kids deserve to feel loved and valued,” says Simpson. “If we can help them become successful happy adults – why would we not?” He describes how nonprofit All Our Kids is encouraging young people in the DC area that they deserve to dream, and often that encouragement occurs over a community meal. Koff agrees. “We need a country of individuals who are all better at what they choose to do,” she says, and access to healthy food is critical. “If we continue to make access to better health and better nutrition a political issue, we will fail as a country.” She shares how she enables people to make better health decisions despite mixed messages in the American media. Billy Shore underscores the ability of anyone to make a difference. “In the social change space, getting close, bearing witness, going into the community, working with people directly is often the precursor to really powerful, transformational change,” he says. “Don’t just post, don’t just preach, get your hands dirty and get involved.” Listen to this inspirational conversation about social justice and tell us how you make a difference in your community!

From proper digestion to fighting migraines, magnesium is truly the miracle mineral.Does your body have the resources it need to perform optimally?Magnesium is one of the most essential mineral to ensure your body runs smoothly, particularly in regards to combating inflammatory stress.Unfortunately, 70 percent of American diets don't meet the baseline minimum for magnesium. From proper digestion to fighting migraines, magnesium is truly the miracle mineral. It also helps stop unhealthy inflammatory responses before they get out of control. One of the reasons for the deficiency is that processed foods have removed much of the magnesium from our diets. For example, white flour and white sugar is nearly devoid of the mineral. However, it would be almost impossible to meet all your magnesium needs through foods. That's why supplementation becomes essential.  Another issue is that calcium intake has been over-emphasized, while magnesium intake has been under-emphasized. The two work in opposition; calcium tightens and magnesium relaxes. When you're out of balance (too much calcium, not enough magnesium), you might experience certain issues such as constipation or excruciating PMS symptoms.Work closely with your health practitioner to discover if you might need to up your magnesium intake, as well as which supplements might be the best.Listen in as Ashley Koff, RD, joins Andrea and Lisa to explain why magnesium is so crucial for optimal health and what the appropriate dosage is for you.

How can you best address the anti-breakfast eater in your household? Not everyone is a breakfast fan. Many individuals, kids included, just can't stomach something that early in the morning... especially if they're off to school or work before the sun even rises. But, as they say, breakfast is "the most important meal of the day." How can you best address the anti-breakfast eater in your household? Registered Dietitian, Ashley Koff, has some helpful tips.First, it's important to remember that hunger sets in when the body is actually awake. So, get the body moving or drink some water to stimulate the digestive system. You can also turn breakfast into a "treat" opportunity, with yummy-tasting smoothies, fresh juices, and even breakfast "cookies." A great way to approach the morning is to break up your breakfast. School kids often have snack time early in the school day and lunch earlier than what they may experience at home. Listen in as Koff joins Andrea and Lisa to share tips for dealing with the folks in your family who just can't do breakfast (you included).

Organic Dairy: Doing Dairy Right

Think of your dairy intake as an accessory, not as a foundation food.Dairy has gotten a bit of a bad rap over the last few years, with issues ranging from lactose intolerance to the inauthentic way dairy can be processed.According to Registered Dietitian and frequent guest of Naturally Savvy, Ashley Koff, "If you're going to dairy, dairy right."Koff says the two keys to eating dairy are to eat less of it and eat dairy of better quality. Think as an accessory, not as a foundation food. Contrary to popular believe, there are no nutrients in dairy that you can't get from other foods. So, if you think you need to drink glass upon glass of milk each day to get your calcium or vitamin D, you're heading down the wrong path.Studies have shown the superior benefits of organic dairy in terms of nutritional value. For example, the fats in organic dairy have a better fat profile, containing more essential fatty acids. The mineral profile is also better, with higher amounts of certain nutrients. All of that goes out the door if your dairy is highly processed or non-organic.Aside from the value of organic, grass-fed dairy is also beneficial. Grass in nature has a lot of "good bugs," which just adds to the quality of dairy products. And, cultured products are a great option for getting both probiotics and essential nutrients. Koff says that the proteins in cow's milk are very different today than decades ago (similar to the way the gluten in wheat has morphed over the years), so you may want to look at other dairy sources, such as goats, sheep, and even bison.Listen in as Koff breaks down the benefits or organic dairy, as well as why it's important to really pay attention to the dairy you're eating.

Did you know that the U.S. government hasn't passed any cosmetic regulatory laws since 1938?Your skin is your largest organ. So, just as important as it is to consider what you put in your body (food, beverages, supplements), you also want to be conscious of what you're putting on your body, including make-up and skin care products. That can be difficult, especially considering that the U.S. government hasn't passed any cosmetic regulatory laws since 1938. Add to that the fact that the U.S. only bans 11 chemicals contained in skin care and cosmetic products, while the European Union (EU) bans over 1,300. Many of the chemicals contained in these products are considered "endocrine disruptors," which wreak havoc on the way your hormones work. Other ingredients may contain certain elements that are typically fine if you consume them in moderation, but can become problematic if you consume too much. For instance, many products contain a form of vitamin A (retinol). But, if you're already getting a sufficient amount of vitamin A via diet and supplements, adding a beauty product to the mix can put you over the acceptable daily mark.Listen in as Ashley Koff, RD, joins hosts Andrea and Lisa to share how your beauty products may be messing with your diet and nutrition, as well as specific examples of products you can use to avoid the risk.

Up to 60 percent of women are not getting enough magnesium on a daily basis. With our compromised soil and the over-processing of modern-day food, research suggests that there's been a 30-90 percent reduction in magnesium intake over the past few decades. And, up to 60 percent of women are not getting enough magnesium on a daily basis. Why is magnesium so important?According to Registered Dietitian, Ashley Koff, magnesium is like Mother Nature's muscle relaxant.Remember, you have many different types of "muscles" in your body... your heart is a muscle just as your bicep, and your entire digestive system works as a muscle to "move things through."Certain minerals, especially calcium, work in opposition of magnesium. Think of your digestive system. If you're combating your magnesium intake with calcium intake and it's out of balance, you may experience constipation. On the other hand, when that balance is corrected, you will feel the ease of healthy digestion.Koff says that magnesium in tablet or capsule form is not as effective, because your body needs to break it down first before it can be useful. She prefers either powder or liquid form.If you're looking to get some magnesium in food form, good news.... cacao (chocolate) is extremely rich in magnesium.Listen in as Koff joins hosts Andrea and Lisa to share more about the benefits of magnesium, as well as why it's so important for optimal health.

Registered Dietitian, Ashley Koff, shares three simple things that can keep you healthy and happy during the holiday season (as well as all year round). You can't live in a bubble in order to stay healthy... you wouldn't even want to, because part of optimal overall health is being mentally and socially stimulated.Registered Dietitian, Ashley Koff, believes there are actually three simple things that can keep you healthy and happy during the holiday season (and all year round). She joins Naturally Savvy host, Lisa Davis, to share these top three tips.SleepNo pill, no food, no exercise can replace what sleep can do for you from a health perspective. Try to stick with a reasonable bedtime, and aim for five out of seven nights of good sleep. More than two nights out of your routine will throw you off. Remember, it's about quality, not just the amount of hours you get. You might get into bed, but your brain could still be buzzing. Finally, do things during the day that will engage your energy or energize you more.HydrationThis is probably the easiest tip to incorporate, but the one that's forgotten about as the weather gets colder. Instead of an iced tea for your caffeine break, you may be doing a latte. People also tend to turn towards soups or other high-sodium foods this time of year, which causes you to retain water. Your body cannot do its proper detoxification and elimination when you're dehydrated, nor can it effectively use the nutrients you're ingesting. Focus on your water consumption and get plenty of vegetables.Incorporate ElderberryElderberry engages the whole spectrum of your body's immune system and can actually work very quickly to cut off the "triggers" of illness. The best way to get elderberry is either in liquid or capsule form; both will get you highly-concentrated results (just make sure you are buying organic versions).
