Bad Bots on the Rise: Thales Report Reveals 37% of Global Internet Traffic Now Malicious, Podcast

"For the first time in over a decade, bots now outnumber humans on the internet — and a growing percentage are built to defraud, disrupt, and deceive." — Tim Chang, Global VP & GM, Application Security, Thales In a sobering conversation with Technology Reseller News, Tim Chang of Thales shared key insights from the 2025 Imperva Bad Bot Report, a deep dive into the increasingly dangerous world of automated internet traffic. According to the report, 51% of all web traffic in 2024 was generated by bots, marking the first time bot traffic has surpassed human traffic. Even more concerning, 37% of all traffic is now classified as “bad bot” activity — a significant increase from 32% the previous year. Thales, a global leader in digital identity and cybersecurity with over 80,000 employees worldwide, acquired Imperva two years ago. Together, the teams behind the Imperva Threat Research division are shining a light on the surge in bot-driven attacks — from simple web scrapers to polymorphic, AI-enhanced bad bots capable of account takeovers and API abuse. Telecom Under Attack Among the most targeted sectors? Telecom and ISPs, which now account for more than half of bad bot traffic. Chang explained that this is unsurprising given the critical infrastructure telecom supports and the high volume of customer data flowing through these systems. Key takeaways from the report include: 51% of all internet traffic is now automated. 37% of global traffic comes from bad bots — a 7-point rise in one year. 40% increase in account takeover (ATO) attacks, often using stolen or brute-forced credentials. Telecom ranks as the second-most targeted vertical, just behind financial services. 55% of all telecom traffic is now made up of bad bots. Chang emphasized that these bots are increasingly using AI to evade detection, shifting IP addresses, mimicking human behavior, and attacking not just websites but APIs — which lack visual interfaces and are harder to monitor. 10 Recommendations to Reduce Risk To help organizations defend against this growing threat, Thales provides a set of 10 actionable recommendations, ranging from understanding your attack surface and deploying bot management tools, to tightening MFA usage and adopting a multi-layered defense strategy. Chang also offered a strategic reminder: don't play all your cards at once — adversaries are evolving just as quickly, and a staggered, adaptive defense is critical. R. “Beans on Toast… it’s cheap, it’s easy, it’s English, does what it says on the tin.” Jay McAllister, aka Beans on Toast, is a true English folk hero. You’ll find him at a British festival on a Sunday afternoon, belting out his irreverent songs for worn out ravers. From helping Banksy launch sky lanterns, to extolling the virtues of a bamboo toothbrush, Beans is the paradigm of a festive life that makes a difference. On the show we talk about the long chain of folk heroes and how Beans became a political songwriter. We chat about festival favorites from Glastonbury to AfrikaBurn. We discuss what it means to bring a child into a festival lifestyle and run the whole show as a family. We end the podcast with a track from Bean’s new album called “Take Your Shit Home With You,” which was requested by the organizers of Boomtown Fair to combat rampant tent abandonment at the event. You can purchase his new album, “The Inevitable Train Wreck,” all of his prolific catalogue, and his book “Drunk Folk Stories” from his website. Your purchase will be delivered with love from his Mum and Dad who manage the merch. A huge thank you to all my supporters on Patreon! This is a more personal installment of Life is a Festival. On today’s episode I ask my friend Tim to explain to me how to get a job. Tim Chang is a Managing Partner at Mayfield, a 50 year old venture fund, but he is much more than a typical VC from the Valley. Child of Taiwanese immigrants, Tim is a musician, a burner, and as will become clear in this episode, a philosopher. On the podcast we talk work and external validation, the myth of the starving artist, and Tim’s formula for a beautiful life. We also talk about diversity in the venture capital world and the dodgy business of monetizing psychedelic medicine. Finally, at Tim’s suggestion, today I launched a Patreon for this podcast. If my work is enhancing your life consider slipping a fiver in my digital tip jar or going all the way to full medici and helping me paint this word chapel. Like the podcast, the path to its financial sustainability will be iterative. I would love your feedback about the value this brings in your life and how you’d most like to support its creation. Saying that your company does artificial intelligence might still have a slightly cool ring to it if you're talking to one of your peers at a conference, but it doesn't mean very much to venture capitalists today, who've been battered with machine learning and artificial intelligence in every pitch deck they've seen for the last three or four years. I wondered, from a venture capitalist perspective, what makes an AI company's value proposition actually strong? What is it that makes an AI startup actually seem like a company that maybe could use AI to really win in the market? Not just to be another company that says they're going to do it or says they are doing it, but where can it actually provide enough of that competitive edge to make a VC want to pull the trigger? Getting a grasp of the answer to that question seems pretty critical. This week, we speak with Tim Chang, partner at Mayfield Fund in Menlo Park, California. Chang and I both spoke at the Trans Tech Conference, held every year in Silicon Valley, focused on wellness and health-related technologies. Chang talks about what it is about an AI company's pitch, product, and market that actually makes AI an enhancement to the business in a way that's compelling to someone who wants to invest potentially millions and millions of dollars.

Nanea and her co-founder Zach Norman have deep backgrounds in gaming, and many many firsts. First mobile games for NokiaFirst mobile game for flip phonesFirst Mobile games for iPod 3 of the first 5 iPhone gamesFirst multi-player mobile gamesIts no surprise Tim Chang from Mayfield Ventures chose to invest in them. Skilled, vetted and experienced. Nanea’s mission at Tripp centers around making Virtual Reality games that are immersive and mood-altering. To ‘Dial up moods.’ Our conversation was wide ranging from what data can tell us about our users, to the shifting landscape of mindfulness in business. In the medical world, there are many regulatory challenges to overcome before a procedure is accepted as medicine. Lots of evidence based research is required. Its an interesting concept, to build tools in the wellness and entertainment markets, where regulatory control is not as embedded. One of the things Nanea mentioned over and over is her desire for what the many Indian religions call Ahimsa, or ‘do no harm.’ Its also a core tenet in many other religions around the globe. Her intention is to build experiences that enhance life, not cause harm. Personally I’m in alignment with this intention. And, I often reflect on what harm, or good means. While there are cultural agreements, its also a relative perspective based on personal experience. The potential power to use these tools for good is tremendous, and the potential power for non-good is also large. I look forward to seeing the breadth of creativity and cultural impact more humans join in to create experiences that align with their values. Could this tool be used as a social and cultural change agent? Will it by definition act as a social and cultural change agent? Is how we interface with our environment also shaping us as individuals and societies? One concept we talked about in our discussion is the interaction and evolution of connectivity and interface. The connectivity, or pipes of connection, for human thought and consciousness are being firmly established even deeper into this planet’s infrastructure with the internet and cellular networks. Paralleling and, iteratively interacting with that communication network are the methods, the ‘ways’ humans are interfacing with both each other, and the dominant software and hardware available. My hunch is these communication and creativity tools are both shaped by humans, and also shape us humans as we interface with them. If this hunch is true, then we are entering a whole other dimension, both literally and materially, in the realms of spatial and embodied computing. How we touch data, how we think, what ideas autonomously surface in the subconscious mind, what programs we are running, our world-views, perceptions of self, other, and society as a whole. I am seriously excited at Nanea’s mission. I also am excited at the splash a $4MM investment in this space makes. In many ways the investment validates the impact VR can have on consciousness and the approaches to digital experiences Nanea and entrepreneurs like her are going to have as they explore these embodied computing realms.
